a pleasant hill nail salon catches fire overnight and it doesn't look like an accident. one more day until voters head to the polls. the state where is the presidential candidates are focusing their efforts in the final push before election day. dramatic rescue in the north bay. how two young children were saved from a capsized boat. it's all ahead on the ktvu channel 2 morning news. good morning. thank you for joining us on this monday morning, november 6th i'm pam cook. >> and i'm brian flores. a lot to take about today. gorgeous weekend. let's take a look at the weather.

>> good morning, you two. the weather of the weekend was pretty nice for november. guess what, today will be even warmer. the warmest locations don't think livermore or concord think santa cruz and san francisco. santa cruz will be 88 and san francisco 85. there will be a lot of record highs possible today. steve, good morning. traffic doing well around the bay area. we're off to a decent start on a monday. as you can see by looking at this picture. northbound 101 looks good. also if you are driving on westbound bay bridge approach it is light. let's go back to the desk. in overnight news several businesses are damaged after a strip mall went up in flames. ktvu alex savidge is live at the scene in pleasant hill where more on what firefighters discovered and why they're calling it suspicious. good morning, alex. >> reporter: an arson investigation has been launched because firefighters found what appeared to be a molotov cocktail here at the scene. another aspect of this fire

that was suspicious the front window of the business had been smashed when firefighters first got here and there was a small fire inside the place that burned on the inside wall. we'll show you video from last night. the fire broke out around 11:30. an alarm was sounding here and crews showed up. the strip mall. this was a very localized fire. fairly small. crews were able to knock it down quickly but they were suspicious about how it started given what appeared to be a home made device that was found he at the scene just outside of the business that caught fire. a fire investigator was called in. we talked with him a short time ago. he said this fire may have been intentionally set. >> i haven't determined where the fire started. i can't discuss any details about the investigation at this point it is a criminal investigation that is ongoing. >> reporter: the fire was contained to this one nail salon. it didn't damage either of the businesses on either side. there is a salon on one side and a bar on the other side.

neither of those businesses were damaged and no one was hurt because no one was around when this fire broke out. but the fire investigator has been here since this fire broke out. he will be here for the rest of the morning. part of the investigation trying to reach the owner of the nail salon and also hopefully end up talking with the employees to this business as well. get a better sense of what may have gone on here last night and why this fire may have started again a fire that appears to be intentionally set here at a nail salon in pleasant hill. live this morning in pleasant hill alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. we are now following breaking news in fremont. police are on the scene of an officer involved shooting. we do have a news crew on the way to the scene and we'll have a live report coming up. but again officer involved shooting. also overnight police are questioning a teenage driver after a bizarre accident in oakland. china town neighborhood. this is a live look another the damage left behind.

look at that. crash scene 12th avenue and east 12th street. police say the teenager was trying to pick up his dad as a restaurant when he hit a fence and crossed 12th street and slammed into a fab lick store. the accident ruptured a water line as well. it does not appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor and say that the teenager may have mistaken the brakes for the gas. today is the final full day of campaigning. president obama and republican nominee mitt romney are making their final appeal to voters. most polls are showing the presidential race in a dead heat. coming up in nine minutes what they are focusing on. supreme court has ordered an arizona group who worked behind an $11 election. governor jerry brown tax hike

proposal and proposition 32. california teachers are working phone banks across the state encouraging people to vote for proposition 30 tomorrow and opponents rather of prop 30 are working equally as hard to encourage a no vote. >> six days ago october 29th i gave birth to this little guy. he's going to be in public schools in five years. i have a first grader as well. prop 30 is vital not only to my career but to my kids and kids in california. >> what we see in this proposition is a kind of a cynical effort to threaten voters with a loss of education in order to get their vote for more funding for the general fund. >> at 4:30 today governor brown will attend a get out the vote rally in san francisco with focus on supporting proposition 30. senator dianne feinstein, mayor ed lee, and former san

francisco governor larry brown. yesterday oakland city council woman jane brianer says she plans to sue her opponent barbara parker. it's over last minute mailers that claims brianer had been suspended from the state bar. the california state bar website shows that brianer was inactive from 1995 to 1997 for not completing continuing education requirements but shows no record of public suspension opinion the campaign called the lawsuit threat a desperate political stunt. police are trying to figure out how someone shot a one-year- old. the girl was brought by family members to a modesto area hospital around noon yesterday. she was air lifted to children's hospital where she under went surgery. the girl is said to be in critical but stable condition. seven people including four

children are safe this morning but that is after they were rescued from a capsized boat in marin county. rescuers having to use a saw but that is to get to two young children who were trapped in that boat for 90 minutes inside that upside down boat. before that a helicopter plucked two other children and three adults from safety. their boat overturned near the mouth of tomales bay yesterday afternoon. authorities say no one was wearing a life jacket. >> normally these types ovines sents do not turn out as well as they did. this is a very happy ending. >> the two children who spent the longest time in the water were taken to the hospital with severe hyperthermia. one adult suffered minor injuries. it's unclear what caused the boat to overturn. >> very lucky indeed. 4:38 now. let's go to sal with a quick look at traffic.

>> good morning. good morning, pam. right now traffic is moving along pretty well around the bay area if you're getting up nice and early and want to get a good commute it should be nice for you on 80 westbound as you head out to the mccarthur maze. also the morning commute looks good if you are driving to the bay bridge toll plaza. nice looking drive getting into san francisco with no major problems and no trouble if you are driving rob any of the other bridges. we're looking at a live picture of san jose and northbound 280 traffic looks good. let's go to steve. sal, don't you love we're back on standard time? >> i like it. this morning it just feels good. >> thank you, sir. good morning. well, i came in and said to ron, guess what is the warmest place going to be today. he said livermore. i said think the other way. it will be san francisco over to santa cruz. the warming continues. we will go from 88 to 80s by the end of the week. it will be a big, big change from one extreme to the other. high pressure here.

there is a little component of an easterly breeze or nice easterly breeze. that will mean 80s inland and 80s on the coast. it will be what we call ice sew thermal. hardly any breeze shows up here. i saw a little component of a north or easterly breeze. 49 fairfield. 60 in san francisco. 50 in antioch. 50 in santa rosa. high pressure, no clouds and everything is going up and over. it will be here today and tomorrow and a very cold system will drop down. today severe clear. sunny and warm record high is possible. i think at the coast. certainly san francisco. the record for san francisco is 81. i think we will blow past that. about 80s. in fact temperatures really, really warm. today it will be nice tomorrow. the cooling starts wednesday. the fog will be back we'll cloud it up with a late rain on thursday and a very cold rain. 50s. we will go from 80s to 50s. extremely cool and breezy but

we are now hours away from the presidential election as the candidates go through their final push before the voters today. renae marsh is live in chicago with how president obama and mitt romney are spending their final day on the campaign trail. >> reporter: good morning, brian. a very cold, cold morning here in chicago. of course chicago being ground zero for the obama campaign. you said it we have less than 24 hours before the big night election night. and both candidates not showing any signs of slowing down. every hour counts for the president as he takes one last swing at the tossup states today and national polls show the race is closer than ever. it's a dead heat with less than 24 hours to go until election day. for >> that is why i need your vote. >> reporter: president obama knows every moment counts. sunday the president made stops in new hampshire, florida, ohio, and colorado. his message push forward. >> that is why i need you, colorado. we have come too far to let our

plaza. there are no major problems. this is a look at the toll plaza itself. traffic is moving along nicely. right on through. so it's just likely to be a little bit better in the early morning hours as people might be a little more awake. if you are driving in san jose northbound 280 that traffic looks good. 4:47 steve. your platform when you run for president is? >> one time all the time. >> standard time right? >> yes. this will be quite the week here. we are going to saturday off with a lot of sunshine, very warm temperatures. santa cruz are be near 88 degrees. might even hit 90. the cooling will start on wednesday and a big change on thursday and friday. we have highs that go from the 80s to the a 50s with a cold rain. it will still be nice into election day as well. high pressure not only aloft but we have a little component of an offshore breeze. coast bay and inland calm

conditions. not much of a breeze. i have seen a little east and northeast. 50-60 degrees. 50 in san francisco. already very warm out of the gate. no clouds. can't find anything they are way up to the north. high pressure is our fair weather friend today. it will be sunny and warm. record highs more likely on the coast. i mean san francisco now i think the record high is 81. i blew past that. and again 80s for many locations or upper 70s. it will be really close. still nice tomorrow. maybe not as warm. still sunny and nice. cooling begins wednesday. dropped a very cold system in on thursday and temperatures go from the 80s and 50s on friday. it does look like it will be sunny. this morning a small earthquake rattled an area of new jersey that is still recovering from sandy. the magnitude 2.0 quake was circled in ringwood which is still dealing with down trees and power outages. some people reported hearing a

loud boom. meantime the national weather service says a nor'easter could hit the area midweek. causing more beach erosion, flooding, and rain along the east coast. thousands of homes are still without power in new york where temperatures are expected to drop into the 20s overfight. four people are dead, seven people are in the hospital following a head on crash south of sacramento. that happened at about 4:00 yesterday afternoon on northbound i-5 near the elk grove boulevard exit. the chp says an suv heading south on the highway carrying nine people lost control, crossed the center divide and hit a car that was headed north. the highway was shut down for several hours. chp is now looking into what caused that crash. 4:50 this morning in washington state a pretrial hearing is scheduled today for the american soldier accused of a killing rampage in afghanistan. robert bails allegedly killed 16 afghans.

the pretrial hearing at a military base will last two weeks. afghan villagers will get to testify via satellite. the new 49ers stadium in santa clara will have a very different look by the time today's work is done. 2,000 concrete sections will go into place today. and 7.5-ton section will be hoisted into place. 60% of the stadium steel work is already finished and workers say the stadium is on schedule to open on time in 2014. >> should look good. >> yeah. 4:51 now. thousands of workers at a raley's and hill store is on strike. some north bay nurses also on strike. what is being done to get them back in the hospital.

the following breaking news update on that breaking news we told you about earlier. we just learned a police shooting in fremont was fatal. police confirmed an officer shot and killed a man last night around 11:00 on central avenue. officers were responding to a domestic violence call and that is the man had a knife. we have a crew headed to the scene right now. we will bring you an update at 5:00. there are in signs that a bitter labor dispute between a

super market chain and employees will let up any time soon. 8,000 workers at nob hill and raley stores across the state are on strike. workers say they could not expect a two-year pay freeze and have their premium pay for holidays and sundays taken away. management says it needs the concessions to stay competitive with other nonunion grocery stores. >> look at target, look at walmart for sure. there is a number of competitors that have come into the market. >> these workers will be out here for as long as it takes. because they are out here to provide benefits for their family and a living wage to provide for their family. >> the company says it had a plan in place for the strike so all stores will remain open. a sonoma county nurses strike will go on for one more day. santa rosa memorial hospital presented the nurses union with

right through dublin it's a nice looking drive with no major problems and 880 traffic still off to a good start. no problem there is. 4:55 let's go to steve. >> thank you. expect for patchy fog north bay and east bay everything says sunshine and warm temperatures. the warm willing top out today. this will be the warmest day by a mile. probably for awhile. not only do we have high pressure right on us but a little component of an offshore breeze. the coast will be warmer than many inland locations. not showing up yet but i've seen a little north three. 49-60. that 49 is fairfield. 60 in san francisco. already very, very mild to warm. so today and tomorrow everything sunny side up and much warmer. in fact record highs possible. especially along the coast. santa cruz could be one of the warmest locations in foreign california. we will go 70s and 80s today. very close. doesn't matter hayward. even oakland will be 83. 85 san francisco. that is not a typo. san francisco to half-moon bay

and santa cruz 80-88 degrees will be warmer than anybody to the east. it will still be nice tomorrow but we will start to see a little bit cooler conditions kick in no doubt about it on wednesday. very cold dynamic system drops down. this is more of a colder pattern than rainy pattern. the highs will be in the 50s. slow recovery but okay on the weekend. >> my goodness a beach day today. ingly know weird. coming up next in our 5:00 hour we are following that breaking news from fremont. police on the sen scene of a deadly officer involved shooting. also a frightening scene in oakland's china town. it involved an out of control car and teenage driver. stay with us.
