well, fall is here but it's feeing a lot like summertime around the bay area. that's one of the top stories just ahead. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. a gas leak caused some disruption on the embarcadero in san francisco by forcing evacuations in the area. david stevenson is live at the scene -- at the scene with more. >> reporter: this happened near that construction you can see. it caused a traffic headache along the embarcadero. a crew was installing a six- inch water line for a new fire hydrant when the crew hit a gas line. pg&e says that crew severed a 1-

inch plastic gas line, where they will be installing the new planner to number buildings. the leak prompted police and firefighters to block off the embarcadero at broadway and to temporary evacuate pier 15. >> just wanted to make sure that wasn't creeping in some place. so we just evacuated and we are -- we're lucky. >> reporter: take a look at these aerial shots over pier 15. in injuries were reported. the leak was capped at 10:42. pg&e says the crew installing that water line didn't have appeared to have done their prep work before marking off the gas line and pg&e says it may bill the city for the cost of replacing or severerring that gas linda dave severing

between a naked man and officers. it ended when officers fatally shot the man around 11:00 last night. janine -- janine da law vega has more formion -- janine da law vega has more information -- janine de la vega has more. >> reporter: tori, you can see some of theon neighbors left plowers here at the doorway. the police surrounded this town home complex on central avenue this morning. ga gathering evidence. officers received the call of the roommate of the woman who lives here. >> officers arrived and found a female who was later identified as our victim running out of the unit with her husband, pursuing her. he was naked with a knife in

his hand. >> reporter: neighbors heard several gunshots. >> they were really close together. it happened quickly. >> i see a police officer running that way and they ordered somebody too get on the ground -- somebody to get on the ground. >> reporter: police say they ordered the man to drop his weapon and when they refused he shot them -- they shot him. police say he was 37 years old and from san jose. investigators are not saying how many shots were fired by the two officers who initially responded. both are on paid leave. neighbors are questioning why police did not use a taser. >> it wasn't right. but -- fa that was totally overkill -- was totally overkill. >> reporter: why do you say that? >> that was a lot of shots! >> reporter: neighbors describe him as a nice guy who worked in

point lead. a rasmussen poll shows romney up by 1. another poll by -- poll by cnn shows both candidates in a tie. thousands of local voters will not be heading to the polls. that's because one of them have already cast their ballots. ktvu brian flores spoke to some of them. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. i just got the -- i just got off the phone with the directors or -- >> back to the line. >> reporter: voters in the bay area are taking advantage of the relatively shorter lines now. >> it's probably the most important election in a long

time. >> it's probably one of the most really really important elections there. >> there's been a big push for early voting. >> because i want to make sure my vote cots because it's very important to get your vote in as soon as possible. >> i wanted to make sure my vote was counted for sure. this is a very important election. >> throughout different counties in the bay area, roughly a quarter have turned in early votes. it's not just the presidential votes. the propositions are hotly contested as well. >> i wanted to make sure i got out and voted when it was convenient for me. >> reporter: the state has reached a record number of

voters, close to 18 million. the california -- for california about half will turn their ballots in early. >> and if you are one of the people that does have a mail-in ballot, election officials say it may be too late to mail in the ballot if you mail it in today but go ahead and turn it into city hall or any election place. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. california voters will decide on a slate of contentious ballot measure -- pressures. proposition 30 would raise the sales tax. proposition 34 would replace the death penalty with life without parole. proposition 32 would pan the use of payroll deductions for

the red cross is helping a san leandro company find shelter after a fire. firefighters rushed to the home around 8:0 last night. investigators -- 8:30 last night. investigators say it's not clear how the fire started. contra costa county car investigators are searching for an arsonist after a suspicious fire at a beauty salon of the the business that burned is in a -- salon. the business that burned is in a strip mall. alex savidge tells us about the potentially explosive piece of evidence at the scene. >> reporter: firefighters quickly docked -- knocked down the fire in in -- inside the business. they believe it's intentionally set since they found a mol la tav cocktail -- a molotov cocktail outside of the residence. >> if somebody knows, they better be lucky that we don't
