fiscal footing. >> this takes time and effort but we are on a correct glide path. and the rating agencies gun to put our -- begun to put out their commentary on how california is on a stable path. >> it will raise the sales tax and increase income taxes for people who make $250,000 a year for the next 7 years. the superintendent said today parents and students across the state can breathe a sigh of relief knowing our schools will have the resources for the remainder of the year. californians approved 5-11 ballot measures. the tax measure made the cut, so did prop 35, increases prison sentences and fines for human trafficking convictions. and prop 36, which revises law to impose life sentence only when new felony conviction is serious or violent and the increase on out of state

businesses and new state district lines. voters defeated prop 31, and prop 32. a measure to set insurance prices based on a person's history was defeated. they also rejected a second tax measure to raise money for public education. it hasn't happened in 79 years but tonight democrats hold a majority in the state capital. ktvu's amber lee is live to tell us how they plan to use their new power. >> reporter: next month new members of the california legislator will be sworn in here, helping make history. for the first time in 8 decades the democrats will have the

the president should look for a compromise to avoid cuts. coming up, the promises republican leaders are making about the next 4 years under a democratic president. police made a second arrest in the vandalism case. he was taken into custody this morning. he is facing charges relating to the destruction of a muni bus at market and third street on october 29. that cost muni a million dollars. police say they are still looking for two more suspects. a jury today convicted a man of shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend and her friend near the richmond-san rafael bridge toll plaza. nathan burris admitted he committed the murders in august

of 2009. he killed the toll taker and her friend as he sat in his truck. the penalty phase begins tomorrow. today the school district apologized to a coach over a legal defense that caused outrage across the bay area. she was abused by two teachers in the 1990s. she has sued the district for failing to stop that abuse. the lawyers said she may have been negligent. she said that claim was heart breaking. today the board said it would with draw that part of the defense. >> chevron released details of its repair plan. they said all repairs will meet or exceed standards. the company said it will continue to inspect systems

such as the one that failed causing the fire on august 6. striking grocery store workers are picketing hoping to get attention and support in their labor dispute with raley's and nob hill foods. ktvu's cara liu is live where the crowd has been protesting for more than an hour. >> reporter: things are continuing to heat up out here. most of the group migrated from here to over to the front of the store where they are marching in a circle and chanting, making sure their concerns will be heard. more than 100 striking workers out here today. this is day four of the strike. thousands walked off their job on sunday, upset over the plan to cut health benefits. a spokesperson told us they need to reduce operating costs

to compete against non-union grocery stores. but they said they will strike for as long as it takes to get a fair contract. >> people understand our issues, they understand what the strike is about. and customers are with us. >> reporter: quite a few have been honking their horns in support of this group. so far no future negotiations are planned. cara liu, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland paced pandora filed a lawsuit today. they want the court to resolve their licensing contract. they claim the group is offering much lower rates to other companies. 5 years after it hit that bridge tower and spilled all

[ bell ] >> the white house is staying blue but stocks were in the red. the dow is down 312 to 12,932. its 81st worst day of the year. take a look. the dow lost 313 points today. the day after president obama was elected in 2008 it dropped 486 points. the market always doesn't move

down following presidential elections. when bill clinton was reelected it rose 96 points. voters approved a sales tax increase to fund county programs. it would raise $50 million each year for programs like the medical center and public health and welfare. san jose's minimum wage will increase from $8 to $10 an hour. voters approved measure d. it will take effect 90 days after results are certified. san jose measure e passed. it allows them to expand the number of tables over the next two years and allows card rooms to offer gaming without additional voter approval as long as it is legal.
