that means it will be cold. all day long we were watching rain showers through the bay area. >> series of showers pelted the bay area after yesterday's 70s. today cold and wet was a surprise. >> it just changed all of a sudden. crazy. >> reporter: do you like it? >> we need the rain. >> reporter: not these drivers who rashed on 101 this afternoon. the chp was urging drivers to slow down. traffic snarled on surface streets. rain caught drivers off guard. >> i don't think they know what they are doing. so many accidents. >> reporter: the change in weather came at a bad time for some. >> i have a cold. the rain doesn't agree with the cold. >> reporter: we found construction workers who say they got lucky.

to keeping education affordable for all. >> reporter: university of california at berkeley was the scene of a noisy, but peaceful student walk out and rally. protesters want the university to reduce tuition and halt increases, now that prop 30, a tax increase to fund schools passed. he is a grad student who says despite the win, some tuition for grad programs may still increase. >> most important, you have to show we won't accept it. we have to get on the streets and demonstrate here we are. >> reporter: university officials say prop 30 funds will stave $250 million in cuts that could have come. protesters today say they want to use the momentum from the win for education and to fight further fee hikes. last year during demonstrations

against hikes, police and student clashed. the university hopes things will be different this time. >> students are free to rally and protest. there are regulations that are designed to make sure it doesn't infringe on the rights of other students. >> reporter: some of the protesters say they will be in san francisco next week for the meeting to make their opinion known. live in berkeley, sal castaneda, ktvu channel 2 news. cal state officials are considering a fee hike for certain students. they want to increase fees on seniors who remain in school

but have credits to graduate. worker was arrested on suspicion of prostitution. they received several complaints from citizens about prostitution. authorities say the worker solicited an under cover deputy on tuesday for a sexual act before the arrest. the man accused of killing a teacher last month appeared in court today. darnell washington faces 9 counts in connection with the killing of susie ko. today a hearing was set for november 16 for him to enter a plea. he and his wife were arrested in seattle while driving a car that was taken from susie ko's home. tania washington is still awaiting extradition. san francisco held a prayer service today for a 20-year-old

man killed in the bay view. >> hear our prayers for your son. >> it was held where he was gunned down friday night. the group hopes its prayers will help stop the killings in the city. he is the 59th homicide victim of the year. death penalty supporters will ask voters to speed up the execution process. days after voters chose to retain the death penalty, they are considering their own ballot measure. it would require a single dose lethal injection method. >> voters always play a role in terms of applying political pressure. if we need to go back to the ballot again, that is a definite possibility. >> the switch would speed up the execution process.

a group in san francisco want san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi to be held accountable for his actions. they are mad he remains in office despite pleading guilty to domestic violence against his wife. the group said it would like to see the sheriff removed from office but is weighing all of its options. the number of people seeking unemployment fell last week but officials say it may not be a true reflection of the job market. 8,000 fewer filed claims. the figures are distorted by superstorm sandy. on wall street stocks fell exextending a slump into -- extending a slump into a second day. the dow is down 0.94 to 12,811. the nasdaq is down 41 at 2,895. the s&p is down 17 at 1,377. there have been huge back ups all day in livermore, news

where people are already camping out for an event that doesn't happen till tomorrow. >> reporter: they are hoping to get one of these holiday food boxes with a turkey inside. as you can see, some people aren't taking any chances. 20 people camped out in line already and plan to spend the night. >> reporter: volunteers today unloaded crate after crate of donated food. all of it going to low income families in san jose as part of a holiday give away that kicks off tomorrow. >> it will be crazy. >> reporter: 4,000 people are expected to register tomorrow for a free food box and holiday toys. the numbers will be up from last year. >> there is so many more families. people who used to donate and now they are here as a customer. >> reporter: volunteers say the economic recovery isn't a

reality yet. >> hard to get a job out there. >> reporter: she has been staying at home with her daughter as she looks for work. she is signing up. >> it is important, with the economy right now we have -- we don't have enough money to buy the turkey. so it is good that they are helping out families. >> reporter: one reason the demand is so great, the high cost of living. >> we still see basically the same post-recession. poverty is staying high. >> reporter: the key to meeting the demand, donations. they still need more people to come by to drop off food and toys. registration begins at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow morning. if you plan on coming down, expect a long line. alex savage, ktvu channel 2

news. 18 more volunteers from the red cross are headed to the east coast to help those effected by superstorm sandy. they left tuesday with two driving an emergency response vehicle. they are expected to arrive tonight. a total of 127 volunteers have been deployed from the bay area. the san jose giants are also pitching in. they donated money to help the brooklyn cyclone and the staten island yankees. donations go towards food, gas and cleaning supplies. snow pruprompted a wint -- prompted a winter weather advisory in the sierras. you can see cars and trucks had to carefully navigate through snow covered streets. chief meteorologist bill martin joins us now. >> we are tracking more rain. showers in the south bay right
