p.m. good evening. i am ken wayne. frank somerville is off. >> i am julie haener. firefighters are combing through the ashes of a fire that sent black smoke over fremont all afternoon. we brought you this breaking news at 2:30 p.m. today as the fire raged inside the c&h enterprises building. >> paul chambers is live with the toxics that were inside the factory. paul? >> reporter: it has been three hours since the fire has been extinguishes. firefighters are out here making sure there are no hot spots. firefighters said they could see the fire from the middle of fremont from this company. >> reporter: coming down interstate 880 we could see the black smoke from 5 miles away. 1:45 p.m. this afternoon firefighters received a 911 call of a

structure fire. crews called for back up, upgrading it to a three-alarm fire. this warns them of potential dangers. >> within the fammable categories, that is -- flammable categories, that is the worse. >> reporter: firefighters say the smoke was toxic because there was combustible oils and liquids inside. >> very toxic. you want to stay out of it. avoid it. anybody in the hot zone here, should have had a breathing apparatus on. >> employees inside c&h enterprises say the fire started in the rear of the building. they tried to put it out but it was too much. >> i didn't think it was going to be as big as it was. it went very fast. >> reporter: the business has been in the area for 20 years.

there are 90 employees. it just a shell of itself that will have to be rebuilt. >> it is heart breaking. we were just getting new machines in. and we were doing such good business. everything was great. >> reporter: everyone made it out safely. amber lee is getting more information and will have more on the bay area news at 7:00 p.m. and on the 10:00 p.m. news. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. >> here is what we are learning about c&h enterprises, performing machining, welding and fabricating. among other services, c&h enterprises welders use metals and weld for structural components and provides parts to the medical and defense industries. ktvu viewer sent us this picture of the flames as it

sent smoke above fremont. you can see how massive the fire was in the early part of the fire fight. e-mail us your pictures at photos@ktvu.com or post them to facebook. she is still in the hospital but a woman who gave birth on a street in san francisco faces child cruelty charges. ktvu's alex savage is live with what investigators learned about the mother that led them to build a criminal case against her. >> reporter: a source with san francisco police told me today the mother was on cocaine when she gave birth. two officers helped save that child's life. we requested interviews but they aren't talking. mean time the community is rallies around the newborn baby. >> reporter: the 39-year-old san francisco woman will be

charged with one felony, cruelty to a child and one misdemeanor, the mother gave birth wednesday morning on the street and knocked on the door at this church for help. her son wasn't breathing and two san francisco police police officers drove the child to the hospital, giving him cpr along the way. >> terrible situation. but it may turn out all right. >> reporter: 5 members have donated money for the newborn baby. >> people saw the newscast and they decided the baby needed help. it is just god blessing that kid. >> reporter: the church will use the donation to buy depers, formula and -- diapers, formula and toys. police say the child will not be going back with the mother who was incooperative during

the investigation. child protective services will figure out what happens to the baby. many say he will always have a home at this church. >> everything happens for a reason. maybe this baby will now be the baby of the community. >> reporter: the mother of the child is still recovering in the hospital but she is scheduled to be arraigned in court tomorrow afternoon. the two officers who rescued the newborn will be back on duty tonight. live in san francisco, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. we have learned a second and possibly third threat against a teacher has been found spray painted on the side of schools. ktvu was the one on scene this morning. ktvu's ann rubin is live with the link investigators are

looking into. >> reporter: they are not ideal in their wording but they -- identical in their wording. students showed us the message targeting a teacher. >> i was shocked. so shocked. he is a nice seecher. he doesn't -- teacher, he doesn't deserve this. >> reporter: shorts shut down the -- authorities shut down the schools. they have stepped up security for the teacher who we are not naming for his safety. >> we have a couple deputies staying with the teacher to provide protection. >> reporter: it appears there may have been multiple threats. investigators say it started one in high school but investigators found one at the middle school too. all of the schools remained

open today. authorities want answers. they are not disclosing how many threats were made but they are tracking down the people responsible. >> the crime has been committed committed and we are following up on leads. >> reporter: police plan to step up security at school tomorrow. till they are caught students say they will be on edge. >> i think it was a prank but it isn't funny at all. >> reporter: we reached out to the teacher today but he declined to comment. authorities say the people responsible for the threats against him and the school could face felony charges. ann rubin, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the threats against the teacher prompted a large police response with sheriff's deputies and atf agents. >> it is specific in nature. the school, the teacher, so

named the best place for newborns to start their lives. ktvu's david stevenson is live now. >> reporter: san francisco general behind me was certified as baby friendly. hospital staffers are trained to support and educate new mothers about the benefits of breast-feeding over formula. last year 96% of the healthy babies here received breast milk with formula supplements. 79% were breast fred. the hospital is now in talks to help other families. >> i don't think it is right to blame a woman for not breast- feeding her child but to educate women. a lot of times we don't know
