ago it was a different scene, children were running here from their school just around the corner, sandy hook elementary to this fire station after being told by police this is where they can come to be safe because of what was happening in the school. it was a scene of chaos and horror, terrified children, hundreds of them coming here. this morning much calmer, no chaos. nothing horrible but still the memory of what happened yesterday. now, the police are here obviously, state police still here. the investigation continues at the school. just around the corner. you can see the police over there talking to people coming in. making sure that the media don't crossover the line. taking flowers as people bring them in. we got here at about 1:40 this morning after flying in from the bay area. we went straight to saint rose

church where there was a human memorial vigil that happened 1:30 as i . said and yet, there were still people coming and paying respect and we talked to two men who came from an hour away. they drove here to pay respect. >> we felt very moved by, you hear about other shootings around but when it hits close to home you really realize that every day is a blessing. >> defenseless little kids, not even ten years old, didn't get to experience their first kiss, their first dance. it's unfortunate that they had to do that >> reporter: and those two were among a number of people who came out, lit candles, prayed and that was at two this morning. you can tell as they said and as you can just tell from the

looks on their faces how devastating this whole thing has been for the entire state of connecticut. people coming from across the state to pay respects to this small hamlet. now i want to point out back here live this is a volunteer fire department and one of the most important fundraiser that they had during the course of the year is they sell christmas trees. if you can pan over you can see the sign says christmas trees, wreaths and that's a big fundraiser for them and right now and for the future those services are -- rather the tree sales won't be happening just because nobody can get here and they have far more important things to deal with. we will be following this. we have been talking to other residents who have been waking up after a nightmare day. we will bring them to you on mornings on 2. live in sandy

hook connecticut. >> and we are waiting for a news conference to start in connecticut. we will take it live when it starts. in the meantime police say a number of gones have been recovered in the shootings that left 28 people dead including the 20 school children. so far they haven't come forward with a motive for the shooting. they say they are still trying to learn as much as they can about adam lanza the 20-year- old gunman described as smart but withdrawn. the school shooting left 26 victims dead, 20 were students. lanza killed himself after the shooting. the 20-year-old lived with his mother in a good neighborhood. a relative said he had a form of autism. people who knew him described him as shy. he was quiet in school but

people also say he was smart and an honor student who graduated three years early from high school. >> takes some action to resolve some inner problem he had, some dark part of his soul. >> we did talk to a former fbi profiler who said he is sure lanza showed warning signs. he said he likely told someone about his pent of frustration. he said killing a room of children didn't come out of the blue. . the older brother of the suspected gunman is out of the police custody. he left a police station last flight. he was taken into custody hours after the shooting. police don't believe ryan lanza had anything to do with the shooting and said he has been cooperative. >> we are waiting to learn the names of those killed. all of the victims have been identified and families have been told but most of the names

have not been released. we do know the identity of three of the victims. they include the shooter's mother nancy lanza, the school counselor and the principal. the principal was -- has been warmly remembered by parents who say she inspired students and took security there at the school very seriously. in the wake of the shooting thousands of americans are calling for the government to address the issue of gun control. we spoke to a woman who survived a mass shooting when she was a teen and we will hear from her. >> the president called for meaningful action on gun violence in the wake of the shooting rampage. >> as a nation we have endured far to many of these tragedies in the last few years. an elementary school in newtown, a shopping mall in oregon, a house of worship in wisconsin, a movie theater in

colorado. >> those comments a day after he made a plea to the white house where he said he was affected by the tragedy as the president and as a parent. a coalition of lawmakers including the new york city mayor has called on the president to send a bill to congress addressing gun violence. >> local churches are offering prayers for those stricken with grief. >> we will pray for the families. >> reporter: about a hundred people came together to find hope and comfort through prayer last night at the goss pell church in oakland. the pastor preempted the regular friday night service and called for people of faith to unite and stand together. >> realizing that when things happen all we have is each other. you know to hold each other up whether we are in california or concouldn't. >> children and adults stood in a circle, held hands and prayed for the families in

>> it is off to a cold start. a few neighborhoods starting off in the upper 20s. we want to bundle up at least in the short term and get ready for more rain showers approaching the bay area. right now we have cloud cover out there but still breaks in the clouds as well. you can see this early saturday morning, taking a look right now at live storm tracker 2. you can pick out the live deputy letter sweeps and the current radar pattern, most of the activity is up to the north. up along the north coast, around the cape and this will be drifting a bit more to the south. this will be the source of more rainfall as we head toward the latter portions of the morning and into the afternoon hours. as far as the temperatures they are very cold. fairfield has warmed up one degree. 30 out at fairfield. napa35, san francisco 46, san jose 37 degrees. definitely off to a cold start this saturday morning. forecast headlines for today,

shower developing, it'll be chilly. tomorrow just a chance of a few sprinkles and the highest chance would be in the north bay, especially up toward sonoma. we are tracking multiple storms on the long range weather maps. at least for today here is the system we are tracking, the sources rainfall around eureka. already cloud cover into the area and that rainfall not to far behind. here is the forecast model. we will take it into the morning about an hour from now at eight mostly cloudy and cool. temperatures from around 30 to 45 and then by the afternoon, by 12:00 showers developing especially up in the northern half of the area. you will see more activity off shore and then throughout the afternoon hours off and on showers likely and temperatures only making it into the low to mid50s. these numbers not a big change from yesterday in places like fairfield and antioch. most of the afternoon in the

. we are looking outside this saturday morning. sunrise up in just a few minutes, 7:18, lots of cloud cover. we will track showers later today. >> flags at half staff across the country to honor the shooting victims. the president has ordered them to be flown at half staff until sunset on tuesday. flags have been lowered at the nation's capitol and across the bay area. a sense of great loss is still being felt here. a couple of dozen people gathered for vigil in walnut creek. they want offer their sympathies. after hearing about a vigil in san jose they wanted to do something in the east bay to show their support. in oakland mourners lit candles at the plaza and offered prayers for victims. the number of children attending, many of them the same age as some of the victims. >> a mass shooting survivor is among the people demanding more gun control.

she was shot back in 1999 when she was 16. she was working as a counselor at a jewish summer camp when a gunman opened fire. she volunteers as a speaker for the brady campaign. >> the mistake people make is they say it's to soon to talk about it. this is the perfect time. public safety and health this is a health issue. go into a hospital and doctors see it all the time. it's killing people. >> the guns used in the connecticut shooting were apparently owned legally by the gunman's mother. thesome say its proof more reform is needed. people in oakland and san francisco are being asked to give up their guns in exchange for cash there. are two separate gun buy back operations ten until three. the one in oakland is at saint benedict's church. in san francisco you can turn in your gun at the omega's boys

club. you must show prove of residence and each can turn in up to three guns. >> the shooting rampage is race raising questions of security at schools. one is calling a wake up call. >> i think we are doing all we can but even that isn't enough if this happens. >> the problem with the drill is we are calm . >> reporter: he said that livermore schools already conduct emergency drills but administrators will review security measures in the wake of the shooting. other teachers and youth center employees working to prevent something similar from happening. the coordinator of this youth center said safety policies reviewed regularly but getting children ready for emergencies may scare them. at this after school program the kids weren't told what happened. >> i have a child so, you know, it's heart breaking to think about what these parents

have to go through. saying good-bye to their kids in the morning. it's just heart breaking, it really is. >> they say there is a fine line between alarming children and keeping them safe. >> we have been waiting for the start of this press conference in connecticut by authorities there. we want to take you there live now to the press conference underway. that's lieutenant paul advance -- vanve. >> long painstaking process. we have three major crime teams in the community. our local partners are working with us and we will move that and speed that up as quickly as possible. we had a meeting this morning and that was a delay with the superintendent of schools. she will be hopefully in the not to distant future up here to talk briefly about some of the issues that she has

encountered. the minute the medical examiner is done, the minute he is coming here and we will again provide all the detailed information, as much detailed information as we can relative to the work nah his office did overnight and continue to do as we speak. again as far as specific questions, i will take a few but i have to tell you, there are certain things we -- cards we are hold close to the chest in the investigation until -- so nothing is taken out of context and we have all the information. >> there were reports that there were other guns other than what was used found in the school. are those accurate? >> that's not accurate. the weaponry that was recovered by our investigators was recovered close to the deceased. we are investigating the history of each and every weapon. we will know everything about

those weapons. who the owner is, that's all being done by investigators. >> [inaudible] >> we are -- again we are going to let the medical examiner come in and provide the identities of the shooter, of all of the deceased. >> have you found any writing, e-mails, that woulden lighten you as to what his motive was? >> that's a very good question. the answer i can give you is that the investigators at the crime scene, the school and secondly at the secondary crime scene we discussed where the woman was found deceased did produce some very good evidence in this investigation that are investigators will be able to use and hopefully painting the complete picture as to how and, more importantly, why this happened. >> [inaudible]

>> we aren't going to name the evidence. we aren't going to talk about it. it's just stated as part and parcel of the investments i don't want to take it out of context. >> [inaudible] >> we have established the point of entry. it was -- it was -- he was not voluntarily let into the school. he forced his way in. that is as far as we can go. >> [inaudible] >> are there what? that is something again if you take it out of context it sounds suspicious but, as the rescue crews arrived, the active shooting teams entered the school, they enter from several different points. it meant they had to force their way into gain access to preform the rescue and save the students and staff so law enforcement broke many windows. >> [inaudible].

>> what? the other crime scene? the secondary crime seen as i said was a crime scene found in pursuing the investigation. once we had an identification we started doing work, doing what we could find out, including and not limited to relatives, friends, co workers, former students, location of residents and all those areas -- people had to be interviewed and investigated so that caused us to find the second crime scene with a woman deceased. >> the evidence that you have, you think it'll provide you a motive as to why? >> to be determined. detectives will analyze everything and put a picture together of the evidence that they did obtain. we are hopeful that it'll paint a compete picture.

>> [inaudible] >> sorry? >> she is doing fine. she has been treated and will be important in this investigation. >> [inaudible]. >> that i don't know. >> tell us that the shoot erin [inaudible] appears to break-in to the school. >> forced his way in. >> and d. >> i don't want to be to specific because i don't know. i would -- i have been told he forced his way in. he wasn't allowed in. what i would like to do -- i would like to get the next portion if you will of today -- i don't want to keep you here all day. i want to do this as efficiently as possible. we would like to get the superintendent, they want to

come up with the town leaders to discuss certain areas of her responsibility and then we want to get the medical examiner up here. we want to get the list of identities and information out to you. for anybody that's new here today the lieutenant and i have put together a written press release. we will provide that to you. please don't rush my vehicle. we should have enough for everybody. if not we will bring more next time we come up. it just lays out the basic details of everything leading up until today. report all right. we will try -- i don't want to give you the time but we will try to be back i will say with in the hour. i will make notification to some that i can that we are on the way. yes. one question. >> it was reported there was an individual taken into custody in the woods after the shooting. >> have you to understand after the shooting we did a complete search of the area, the neighborhood with the local partners, everything was looked

at. if we found anyone in the woods, they would be detained. there were no other arrests associated with this investigation that happened. >> [inaudible] >> i would have you address that with the superintendent of schools. she is give you that answer. we will -- we will be back. i fled -- i know you have a lot of questions, i think the people that are coming here that we are bringing to speak to you can answer them and put a lot of -- take a lot of the mystery out of what we have been dealing with. okay. >> you have been listening to lieutenant paul vance of the connecticut police state department as he leaving the podium. we are waiting for the press conference to start for over two hours. now it looks like we will get information this bits and pieces throughout the morning. we expect to hear from the superintendent of schools as well as the medical examiner

who will release the identities of the victims. >> and in that press conference he was asked about if there were more guns found in association with the shooting, he said no, he said there were no other arrests but we are waiting to hear more as the morning goes on. >> and the latest information as well that we got that the gunman did force his way in to the school. that's a question we will -- that will be addressed. we have john in connecticut. we will continue to follow this when we come back. to try to get of of the way but the bike clipped the back of the truck throwing the officer into oncoming traffic movement three members of a family are dead after they were hit trying to fix a flat tire. the family pulled the lexus in to the center divider around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. a vw veered in to the divider and hit them. the family was killed. another person survived. the 83-year-old driver of the other car was reportedly speeding could be charged with manslaughter. >> this morning police are investigating an parent murder suicide on the las vegas strip. a man opened fire last night near the entrance of the excaliber killing a woman before taking his own life. guests ran for cover after hearing the gun shots. >> we were just going to go back to our rooms and people started running and they were like yelling it's a shooting

and we didn't know what was going on. i ran for my life. i was like so scared. >> neither the gunman or the victim has been identified but police say it appears the woman who was killed worked at the hotel. the relationship between the two is not known. >> let's turn to the cold temperatures out there because mark has been telling us that it's frosty and maybe rain is coming. >> that's right. fairly good bet in to the afternoon even as early as later this morning. also a cold start this morning most areas in the 30s to 40s. right now on the maps, you can see all the cloud cover. this system drops in the north and west. shower chance also be on the increase. as far as the showers the most of the activity up to the north. along the authority north coast. ten this morning there you can

. 20 beautiful angels and 20 people, little angels who will look over us for all the days to come. >> prayer, tears, and words of comfort. a community coming together still shaken after unspeakable violence. welcome back. >> mike has the day off. new details on a mass murder in england this morning. we learned the gunman adam lanza forced his way into sandy hook elementary. that's where he killed more than two dozen people, most of them children. law enforcement officials continue to work at the school to put together what happened. >> everything we need to do to peel back the onion, layer by layer and look at every crack and crevice of that facility and that doesn't include or exclude i should say the out outside of the building, it's also a part of the crime scene,

every vehicle in the lot so it'll be a long process. >> that's news we have just gotten in from a press conference a little while ago. the school shooting left 26 people dead. then lanza killed himself. he shot and killed his mother before the shooting. the victims of the rampage were remembered in a memorial at a new town church. close to a thousand people packed the catholic church last night where 26 candles were lit in honor of those killed. hundreds more stood in the freezing cold outside to pay their respects. >> by being here you speak to the nation. and you are sending a message to all of america and believe me the hearts and prayers of america are with you tonight. >> mourners stayed at the church hours after the service ended to pray and remember the

victims. >> new town is more than 300 years old, in the southwest part of the state. it was founded in 1705 . many people who live there work and drive to new york city. new town is well off economicly with a medium household income of $108,000. today $108,000. >> an oregon mall where a gunman opened fire killing three has reopened with tight security. memorial books and stars will be available throughout the weekend for shoppers at the town center near portland to leave messages. mourners also attended a vigil and plans in the works for a permanent memorial. officials say extra security is in place. >> the connecticut school shooting is also drawing comparisons to the columbine tragedy where two students killed 13. some survivors say news of the connecticut shooting was

particularly difficult to hear because they are now parents themselves. first responders at columbine also found themselves reliving it. >> some of the photographs, the footage, it's almost like a carbon copy of what i saw 14 years ago. so there is an effect on a lot of people. the events of 14 years ago put a lot of miles on a lot of people, myself. >> some survivors created a group to help survivors of mass shootings and their families. the group started this past summer after a gunman opened fire in a movie theater in colorado killing 12. >> the names of our god that is god and holy we pray. >> immediately after the shooting dozens of people gathered outside the white house for a vigil. many belong to a gun control group who happen to be in washington for a training conference. they chanted, lit candles and pleaded for action. >> as we said there is still information coming out from

authorities in connecticut. >> we are in new town where that press conference ended and authorities promising more information with in the hour. what have we learned? >> reporter: a couple of nuggets came out of this press conference that stood out. the lieutenant paul vance with the state police here in connecticut saying that they collected some very good evidence that could point to a motive in all of this but he wouldn't say what that evidence was specifically. again, saying it's good evidence that may fill in some blanks. he went onto talk about the shooter and that he was not voluntarily let inside of the school. in the words of the lieutenant he forced his way into the school so that is something that we know here now as well. of course we have heard some of the 911 calls in which a caller

describes hearing gun shots as well as seeing glass shatter in the school. again this would only be speculation at this point but obviously the gun shots perhaps from adam lanza shooting -- whether windows, doors, we don't know. we are all just trying to put this puzzle together here. those are the two minute thing that came out of the press conference. we know that the victims bodies have all been taken out of the school now. they are now at medical examiner. they are doing their investigations and at some point once that is all wrapped up we will hear from the me. >> we have been wait fog that press conference, it was way behind schedule and he said it'll be a slow process for information to come out, maybe with in the hour, maybe not. we will hear from the

mark is in today for rosemary. its been cold this morning and there is a possibility we will get wet weather as well today. >> yeah. that's a fairly good bet as we head in to the afternoon, later on this morning and into the afternoon and here i am still in the weather center. we are still tracking rain showers. that's the constant. the cold temperatures this morning and the rainfall developing in to the lat effort portions of the morning and afternoon. right now on live storm tracker two we will start off with the current temperatures, look at how cold it is. 30 degrees in -- a lot of low 30s out in santa rosa. a string of 40s for san francisco, oakland, out toward half moon bay as well. want to bundle up this morning. here is the wider perspective on the radar. you will notice no rain showers just yet. maybe just a few sprinkles but most the action up to the north. this will drift to the south as we head toward the latter portions of this morning. because we have this guy, that

cold front into the northwest portions of the state. this area of low pressure will be a factor especially into saturday afternoon. as this moisture arrive you will notice light rain, this is not a big deal in terms of rainfall accumulations, could be a tenth of an inch, maybe two tenths. still, enough to impact saturday afternoon. this morning 8:00 mostly cloudy and cold. into the afternoon hours, showers developing, in fact by 11:00 o'clock we could have showers. 45 to around 50 and then in to the afternoon showers likely by four, 50, to 53. the key tomorrow the bulk of the activity moves up to the north. as which re-- as a result sunday could have a better forecast. few sprinkles up into sunday and the chances on the increase by sunday evening. forecast highs this afternoon out to the chilly start this morning. pretty cool. low to mid50s toward mountain view and san jose and the look

oakland right now currently 43 degrees. >> morgan hill police are asking for the public's help finding a man in connection with three suspicious incidents involving girls and young women. a 13-year-old in the latest said she was walking yesterday morning when a man got out of a white van and started chasing her. the girl managed to run to a neighbor's house for help. police have received two other reports of suspicious behavior with the same description of a white van. the suspect is a white man in his mid-30s short and chubby with balding hair or a crew cut. anyone with information on the man's identity or any of the incident s is asked to call police. >> police found marijuana in a child's toy box. they made it in arresting a man in connection a drive by shooting. they believe the shooting stem from a gang dispute. he has been booked in to the

jail on suspicious of several charges including attempted murder, shooting at a vehicle and felony cruelty to a child. this morning police are looking for a suspect in the shooting at a san rafael transit seven is interest. a 22-year-old was standing on a bus stop yesterday afternoon when another man approached him and shot him. an off duty paramedic helped the victim. the man was taken to the hospital for surgery and is expected to survive. the shooter was last scene getting on highway 101 in a gold sedan. it appears the government won't take action in states where marijuana is legal at least for now. the president said it doesn't make sense from a priority point of view to focus on drug use in states where it's legal. possession of up to an ounce is legal for adults in washington state and colorado. while health officials say california has made congress in its smoking campaign they have had problems reaching out to

one age group. according to a study smoking rates have gone up about 2% in the last year among 18 to 24- year-old's in the state. the state report found while sales have plunged the sale of smokeless tobacco products have gone up in the past decade. >> the president of afghanistan said united states and nato troops should leave afghanistan villages as soon as possible. he said international forces will end their combat mission in 2014 but he said afghanistan force also take charge next year. he wants all other troops to start leaving his nation's villages sooner rather than later. in other news, the christmas season has started at the vatican. it's a 78-foot silver fir tree. the lighting kicks off a busy season for the pope. it ends with a mass on

extremely heart breaking, difficult thing for the folks to endure. >> police also said it does appear that the shooter forced his way in. 20 children and six adults were killed when he opened fire at that school. he also killed his mother and appears to have died from aself inflicted gun shot wound. >> more details about the investigation as she said. connecticut state police say the gunman wasn't let in and forced his way into sandy hook before opening fire. his brother said that lanza was believed to have a personality disorder. another relative said he had a form of autism. people called him shy but he was said to be smart, an honor student who reportedly graduated high school three years early. he lived with his mother before allegedly murders her prior to the scoot shooting. >> it takes some action to

resolve some inner problem he had, some dark part of his soul. >> we talked to a former fbi profiler who is sure lanza showed warning signs, he said he likely told someone about his frustrations. he said killing a room of children didn't just come out of the blue. snoot victims of the connecticut shooting rampage were remembered in a quiet memorial at a church. close to a thousand people packed the church last night where 26 candles were lit in honor of those killed. hundreds more stood in the freezing cold outside to pay respects. >> by being here, you speak to the nation and you are sending a message to all of america and believe me the hearts and prayers of america are with you

tonight. >> reporter: some stayed at the church hours after the service ended to pray and remember the victims. people in the bay area are mourning with the community. there is a vigil we are covering in san francisco. allie is live now at the aids memorial grove in golden gate park. >> reporter: this vigil is set to start any minute now. it's happening at the aids memorial grove in golden ate of gate park. there is the entrance but the grove where this is going on is about two hundred feet down this winding path away from the nearest street. the nearest intersection is bowling green drive and nancy pelosi drive. it's starting at eight this morning and it was organized by a group called faith studio. it's a s spiritual nonprofit and jennifer is one of the organizers. >> we offer pop up experiences to practice faith and in the

grief. about a hundred people came together to find hope and comfort through prayer last night in oakland. the pastor preempted the regular friday nights and called for people of faith to unite and stand together. >> realizing that when things happen all we have is each other. you know to hold each other up whether we are in california or connecticut. >> children and adults stood in a circle at the church, held hands and prayed for families struggling to come to terms with their grief and loss. other churches will hold similar services. a sense of great loss is still being felt here. a couple dozen gathered just outside city hall. they said they wanted to show support and offer sympathy. organizers said after hearing about the vigil in san jose they wanted to do something in the east bay. we have continuing coverage of the school shooting and we will

have it all morning log. the renewed debate over gun control and at 8:30 another live look. >> a bomb threat forced police to evacuate part of the great mall. they found a message on a bathroom wall reading bomb in building. it frightened shoppers already on edge. >> they found after doing a sweep that the message said bomb in building, but it said 4:30 p.m. >> bomb sniffing dogs searched the mall but no explosives were found. officials are reviewing surveillance camera footage to try to identity the source of the threat. >> morgan hill police are asking for the public's help finding a man in suspicious incidents. a 13-year-old said she was walking yesterday when a man got out of a white van and

started chasing her. the girl was able to run to a neighbor's house for help. police have received two other reports of suspicious behavior with the same description of the white van. the suspect is a white man in his mid-30s, short and chubby with balding hair or a crew cut. anyone with information on the man's identity or any of the incidents is asked to call the police. >> we are starting out with clouds and fog and very cold temperatures this saturday morning. our live camera shows you just that with all the overcast. the berkeley camera, some of the overcast. still breaks in the clouds but the clouds will continue to thicken and eventually rain drops heading in to the bay area later on this morning and into the afternoon. as far as the cold numbers they are starting to warm up just a bit. still chilly. fairfield 34, the couple of hours ago they were 29, oakland right now around the 40-degree

8:13, looking out out, lots of cloud cover and soon we will track rain showers. >> flags have been lowered across the country to honor the shooting victims. the president has ordered flags be at half staff until sunset on tuesday. flags have been lowered at the nation's capitol and across the bay area. a san francisco mass shooting survivor is among the people demanding more gun control in the wake of this latest tragedy. the activist was shots in 1999 when she was 16. she was working at a counselor at a jewish summer camp when a neonazi opened fire. she now volunteers as a speaker for the brady campaign against gun violence. >> the mistake people make is they say it's to soon to talk about it. let people mourn this is the perfect time to talk about it. this is a health issue, go into hospitals and doctors seeing all the time. it's killing people. >> the guns uses were

apparently owned by the gunman's mother. advocates say that the connecticut shooting is proof that more reform is needed. and as which we have been talking about the community in connecticut is still reeling the events. john got there last night and has been talking to people in the town. >> reporter: >> reporter: it's about 11:15 here, act 24 hours after much of the community started to find out what was happening just down this street. that is where the school sits. now there is no one in the state who doesn't know about this horrible incident. as you can there can see there is been a lot of activity, people coming to pay respects

and bring flowers, nearby residents have been out as well trying to recover from the shock and grief. we talked to a woman across from the school and a man who said he didn't sleep because he was here the whole time and feeling a lot of anger for the shooter. >> it's unreal. it felt unreal and to think those poor children could never see something like this coming. those parents who now have to live without their children. it's to much. >> it's heart breaking and to hear, especially liting kids involved it's -- i don't know. this guy that felt the need to do this -- i hope he burns in hell. >> reporter: and back here live as the day has worn on, as -- morning has started to come closer to afternoon there is been a lot more people coming out. many people coming bringing the flowers. we have seen actually quite a

few young people including some high school students who may -- they are still finding out what's going on, may know someone connected to this. we have been trying to talk to them. we have also been trying to talk to other residents who may know some people involved in what happened. we will gather that and bring it to you later here. live in sandy hook. in new town connecticut. >> there are two separate gun guy back operations today from ten to three. there is one in oakland on 82nd avenue and then 234 san francisco you can turn in your guns. you do have to show proof of living there but you can turn into up to three guns for two hundred dollars each. >> scott olson has filed against the police department for injuries he received in an

occupy demonstration last year. he said a bean bag shot by police in to the crowd hit him in the head, fractured his skull and caused brain damage. it named one officer, it also lists ten unidentified officers. the suit doesn't say the amount of damages olson is seeking. >> new this morning the polls have opened for closely watched vote on the proposed congress. the new constitution has the support of the president but is opposed by moderate muslims and christians. critics say that it could let religious leaders restrict civil liberties, ignore women's rights and undermine labor unions. >> the president of afghanistan said united states and nato troops should leave as soon as probably. he said forces will leave in

2014 but he said afghanistan forces will take charge of securing afghanistan next year and he wants other troops to start leaving sooner rather than later. >> this morning family and friends are remembering a nurse who took her life after a hoax at the hospital. authorities say that she transferred a phone call for two australian dj's pretended to be the queen and prince. during the call they asked about the health of the pregnant dutchess and another nurse gave out medical information. >> she worked to reach excellence. she was loved very much. >> she left three suicide notes one of which criticized the hospital's handling of the hoax. just hours ago we learn that nelson mandela unit went

successful surgery. 994-year-old had the operation today but has been in the hospital for eight days. the government officials say that his doctors wanted to treat a recurring lung infection before putting him through. >> it appears the government won't take action in states where marijuana is legal. at least for now. in an interview the president said it doesn't make sense from a priority point of view to focus on drug use in states where it's legal. possession of up to an ounce is now legal for adults over the age of 21 in washington state and colorado. while health officials say california has made progress in its anti smoking campaign they have had problems reaching out to one age group in particular. according to a new study rates have gone up about 2% in the last year. among 18 to 24-year-old's in the state. the state report also found while cigarette sale sales have gone bun the sale of smokeless has gone up. >> a shooting suspect caught in santa rosa, the disturbing

a man opened fire near the entiris of the excalibur. frightened guests ran for cover after hearing the gun shots. >> we were just going to go back to our room and people started running up the escalator and they were yelling it's a shooting and we didn't know what was going on so i turned around and ran for my life. i was like so scared. >> night the gunman nor the victim has been identified but it appears the woman worked at the hotel. the relationship between the shooter and the victim is unknown. >> police say they found 18 pounds of marijuana hidden in a child's toy box while making an arrest in santa rose a. police found it while taking a man into custody in connection with a drive by shooting this past october. police believe that the shooting stemmed from a gang dispute. he has been booked into the sonoma county jail on suspicious of several charges including attempted murder, shooting at a vehicle and

felony cruelty to a child. this morning police are also looking for a suspect in the shooting at the san rafael transit center. police say a 22-year-old was standing at a bus stop on the westside of the terminal yesterday afternoon when another man approached him and shot him. an off duty paramedic helped the victim until the ambulance arrived. the man was taken to the hospital where surgery and is expected to survive. the shooter was last seen getting on highway 101 in a gold sedan. >> it looks like it's going to about a white christmas for flagstaff. the city has received several inches of snow because of a winter storm. schools were closed friday and the snowy weather pushed back the graduation ceremony for the university. there is more snow on the way. a second storm will hit this weekend. >> and we are seeing sun outside here in the bay area but there is wetness coming up ahead. mark is here right now to give us a sense of what's ahead and

this elementary school and the victims killed. >> the victims have been identified by the office of the medical examiner. they are still doing some of their work. >> reporter: there are still many questions about friday's shooting at sandy hook elementary school but the most common one is why. >> in these times of troubles when the unthinkable happens in our midst, our faith is tested. >> reporter: at the center of the puzzle adam lanza, the 20- year-old identified as the shooter. he had no known criminal record before going in to the school friday morning dressed in black and a military vest. he was found dead in a classroom, apparently by his own hand. the victims are being mourned across the nation like at this vigil at the us capitol friday night. >> everybody in town knows everybody.

there is nobody who isn't affected by it. >> reporter: the president's weekly address also focused on the tragedy. >> that the love they felt for those they lost endures not just in their own memory but in their communities and in their country. >> reporter: nowhere is the sadness stronger than in this small community. >> it's impacted the town, the state, the world, the united states, it's a horrible thing. like people say, why. >> reporter: in another key piece of information that came out of this update this morning is that investigators say that they collected some good evidence that could color in or give us a clearer picture of the motive behind the shooting that happened yesterday. >> all right. thank you. it does appear the older brother of the suspected gunman is out of police custody. a man believed to be ryan lanza left a police station last

night. he was taken into custody for questions hours after the shooting in connecticut. police don't believe that he had anything to do with the shooting and they say he has been extremely cooperative. >> in his web address the president said that the shooting rampage has affected him as the president and as a parent. >> most of those who died were just young children with their lives ahead of them. every parent in america has a heart heavy with hurt. >> reporter: the president's comments come a day after an emotional speech at the white house where he said it was time for meaningful action on gun violence. a coalition of lawmakers has called on the president to send a bill to congress addressing gun violence. the speaker of the house canceled the republican's weekly address in the wake of the shooting. people in the bay area are mourning with connecticut this morning there is a vigil in san francisco and that's where we are live right now at the aids

memorial grove. >> reporter: it's a vigil and remembrance event. it's underway right now and happening at the aids memorial grove in golden gate park this is the entrance. the grove itself where people have gathered is about 200 feet down this windy path into the left. we were just down there and can show you some of the video of what's going on there right now. a small group of people gathered around the christmas tree that's set up. they were saying prayers and writing cards that will be sent to the people of new town connecticut. it was organized by a nonprofit group called faith studios. they said organizers say they like to have pop up faith events when things like this happen in order to bring the community together. we asked one of the people who showed up why she decided to come out. >> we are a community and i just don't know them. i just haven't met them but it busn 't meant they aren't my

neighbors. >> reporter: this event will go on until a little after nine. it's at the aids memorial grove in golden gate park down this winding path. have you to go down about a hundred feet and make a left and then go another hundred feet. the nearest street is bowling green drive and nancy pelosi drive. live in san francisco. ktvu. >> the shooting rampage is racing questions about security at schools. one assistant superintendent is calling a wake up call. >> think we are doing all we can but even that isn't enough if this happens. the problem with the drill is we are calm. we know it'll happen. >> the assistant superintendent said that livermore schools already do emergency drills but administrators will we view security measures in the wake of the shooting. other teachers are working to prevent something similar from

happening. the coordinateer at this youth center said safety policies reviewed regularly but getting children ready for emergencies may scare them. at this program the kids were not told what happened. >> i have a kindergartener. you know it's hart breaking to think about what these parents have to go through. saying good-bye to their kids in the morning, it's just heart breaking, it really is >> teachers say there is a fine line between alarming children and keeping them safe. >> the connecticut school shooting is also drawing comparisons to the columbine tragedy where two students killed 13 before killing themselves. some survivors say news of the shooting was particularly difficult to hear because they are now parents themselves. first responders there also found themselves relieving the tragedy. >> some of the photographs, some of the footage is almost

mere is the live camera in the south bay showing you the cloud cover. we had a few breaks about an hour ago. the clouds continue to push back in to the area and the rainfall will soon be moving in as well. as far as current numbers, just updating some of the cold temperatures you can see 30s out toward santa rosa, napa, fairfield 32, downtown 45 and san jose as we said around 40 degrees. rain out to the north. even snow fall up to the north as well. this will be drifting in to the bay area over the next few hours, right now can't find a lot in the way of activity on the radar. you can see a little bit of action in parts of the authority bay. it leaves them mist or drizzle out toward portions of sonoma moving in to napa. forecast headlines for today. showers developing, it'll be lily. tomorrow more cloud cover, just the chance of a few sprinkles, main activity lifts to the north, for the second half of the weekend and then the extended, the cold weather pattern and we can still be

tracking rain showers as well. here say look at the satellite. all the activity up to the north and west. as far as significant rain that will not be in the picture for today but still the cloud cover, the cold temperatures and the rain showers beginning to move over the area. the cloud cover at eight. we but this in motion by 11. we could track rain along the coastal sections of sonoma and toward marin and then in to the early portion of the afternoon. rain source likely and most areas about a tenth of an inch or less. and the shower activity on the decrease. late this afternoon and into the evening hours, still a chance and into tomorrow not a lot of coverage but we will hold on to the chance of a few sprinkles and the highest chance in the forth bay. we have been tracking extreme tieds over the past few days, thursday peeks, 7.2 feet and today it'll continue to come

the wake of the shooting for throwing herself in the path of the gunman to protect her students. authorities have confirmed that teacher vicki soto died in the shooting. it's a question on many minds what to tell your kids about the shooting. it's important to give kid raise chance to share their feelings. they say it's important to make kids feel like they are safe . >> what happened to the kids say some kids got hurt, some died. if you felt you had to say that. i wouldn't give numbers and details. >> they say it's important to shield young children from media coverage of the shooting and explain to them that school is a safe place. >> a teen is -- a teen is in critical condition after a drive by shooting in san francisco. police say that four men in a vehicle shot at the teen near

24th street just before 1:30. the injured teen then walked a block to the hospital. police haven't released any specific suspect information. >> three members of a santa clara family are dead after their car was hit as they tried to fix a flat. the chp said they pulled their lexus in to the center divider around 3:00. a car then veered into the divider and hit the lexus. lexus. the family was killed. another person survived. the 83-year-old driver of the other car was reportedly speeding. the chp is mourning the death of an officer killed in a motorcycle accident in solano. this happened just before six last night. police say that he was off duty riding on highway 12. when a truck turned in front of

him. that driver reportedly sped up to try to get out of the motorcycle's way but the motorcycle clipped the back of the truck throwing the officer into oncoming traffic. >> family and friends are remembering a man killed while riding his skateboard. a vigil was held for the 21- year-old scott hickerson. he was riding in a crosswalk on monument boulevard and eriksson road last friday when he was hit by the suv. >> he was a person that if you knew him you would immediately want to hang out with him a lot more. i know that everybody here is going to miss him. the driver has been identified as a 21-year-old. officers are looking in to who had the right of way and if alcohol or drugs played a role. >> the university of california is is abandoning it's new logo.

they said it's important to respect the experience the community. they said it wasn't intenned to replace the old seal. >> southwest is getting ready to make a big change. southwest doesn't charge for customers to change their flight plans after buying a ticket but the airline has announced it'll soon charge a fee for not canceling a ticket before a flight. they have always allowed passengers to transfer money from unused tickets to new flights. it's expected to start next year. >> wal-mart is slashing prices on i-phones and i-pads. they said they plan to offer the 16gig i-phone 5 for $127. the third generation pad will sell for $399. a plan to give cell phones to homeless people has been approved. the california public utilities commission okayed the program

shoppers can leave messages. mourners attended a vigil last night near the entrance and plans in the works for a permanent memorial. mall officials say they have extra security in place. senate man convicted of raping three women in san francisco was sentenced to life in prison. that's the maximum he could have gotten. last month he was convicted on 25 counts relating to three assaults that took place last year. he was also ordered to pay $250,000 in fines and restitution. >> there is a recall involving salmon. ocean beauty seafoods recalling two products after concerns of possible contamination. the products are three ounce nathan's brand cold smoked and four ounce cold smoked nova. so far no illnesses have been reported. the tide is expected to be back to normal today in parts of marin. for the past three days county

maintain -- do some maintenance and long term repairs. traffic is being rerouted. >> the nhl lock out is going to the court. the league announced its filed a class action lawsuit to confirm its lock out is legal. it filed an unfair labor practice charge against the player's union. the nhl said the union barginned in bad faith . the lock out is in its 91st day and no new negotiations are scheduled. >> tomorrow's game fort raiders will be on television. they were able to sell enough tickets and avoid their second local tv blackout. after tomorrow's game the last two games of the season are on the road at the panthers and the chargers. >> coming up at nine the coverage of the tragedy in connecticut continues. we are going to have a live report from the town as we learn more about the events of yesterday morning.

that rain activity will gradually spread to the south, making our way throughout the day. coming up, we'll take a look at our updated forecast model and break down the timing of the rainfall into your saturday, and the one part of your weekend that will be dry. and we have continuing coverage of the shooting tragedy in newtown, connecticut. connecticut state police held a news conference about an hour and a half ago, where they said all the victims of the shooting rampage at sandy hook elementary school have been identified and they did say the names of those victims will be released soon. >> as you know, this is an extremely heart-breaking, difficult thing for these folks to endure. >> 20 children and 6 adults were killed when adam lanza opened fire at that school yesterday. lanza also killed his mother. ktvu john sasaki is live in newtown with more. >> reporter: it's now about noon here in sandy hook, and very, very few people here are affected more, of course, than the people who are involved at

the school over there on dickinson, at sandy hook elementary school. the teachers, the faculty, the students, the parents, of course all of those folks devastated, totally devastated. but also very, very powerfully affected are former students, people who live in the area, and just about 20 minutes ago, we talked to someone who is here helping her mother-in-law, who lives just up the street from the fire house, who was a student at sandy hook elementary school back in the sixties, and she also just happened to be here outside the house where her mother-in-law lives in front. and she happened to look over at the fire house when she saw and realized what was going on. she told us about that. >> two little boys, one screaming hysterically, and the other one telling them, stop, stop running, stop, stop! and then the police went up that

driveway and within a matter of a minute, there was at least 10 to 12 huge shotgun, sounds of shotguns going off simultaneously and those two little boys were in front of that fire house and i said -- i'm going, my god! >> reporter: so on another note, we want to point out that there was a call that went out to firefighters from surrounding communities, maybe about two hours ago, and since then, there have been a number of other communities, stephenson and south bury, a number of trucks coming in, lot of firefighters here. it's unclear exactly what they are going to be doing, but we do know the bodies have not actually been removed from the scene. they may not be in the building anymore, but they certainly have not been taken away to any morgue in the area. so it could be that these firefighters are here to help facilitate any transportation of those bodies. so this is still a very grim

scene. the investigation continues and will continue for days, if not even longer. and we will find out exactly what is going on this afternoon with all of these firefighters and anything else that happens here and we will bring that to you later on ktvu channel 2news. live in sandy hook in newtown, connecticut, john sasaki, ktvu channel 2news. connecticut state police say the gunman was not let into the school. he forced his way into sandy hook elementary school before opening fire, according to investigators. lanza's brother says lanza was believed to suffer from a personality disorder. a relative told investigators he had a form of autism. people who knew him described him as shy and socially awkward, but others said he was brilliant, an honor student who reportedly graduated high school three years early. lanza lived with his mother in a prosperous neighborhood before allegedly murdering her prior to the school shooting. >> it takes some action to resolve some, some inner problem he had, some dark part of his

soul. >> we talked to a former fbi profiler who is sure lanza exhibited warning signs before the shootings. security specialist richard smith says lanza likely talked to someone about his pent-up frustrations. smith says killing a roomful of children didn't, quote, just come out of the blue. we have learned the identity of three of the victims. they include the shooter's mother, nancy lanza, sandy hook elementary school psychologist, mary sherlock, close to retiring, and the school's principal, dawn hochsprung. back in the bay area, 3000 miles away, there is still a deep sense of sorrow and loss. people are coming together to offer support and show their solidarity. ktvu's allie rasmus is live at a vigil in golden gate park. >> reporter: the vigil just wrapped up a few minutes ago. it happened at the aids memorial grove here at memorial park. this is the entrance, but the grove itself is about 200 feet

down the windy path at golden gate park. turning the camera, it's a ways away from the nearest street. but here's what the scene looked like at the grove, just about 20 minutes ago. a small group of people gathered around a christmas tree that was set up there. they were saying prayers, and also writing cards that will be sent to the people of newtown, connecticut. the mood was somber. we saw some people getting very emotional. one woman brought a stuffed animal. people were kind of quiet, not really talking to each other, meditating and taking it all in. but some of the people who gathered there told us they felt mpelled to be here. >> you have to get up and live this life now without their children. to me it, is incon receivable. the least i can do is let them know people somewhere else are pulling for them. >> it's a national tragedy. i have found that when we can't do anything else, what we can do is we can pray.

and that is easier said than done. and it's easier to do in community with other people. >> reporter: now, the vigil is organized by a san francisco nonprofit group called faith studio. and the organizer you just heard from said the group's aim is to have impromptu pop-ups, she calls them, spiritual events and prayer circles. so that was why they decided to organize this yesterday. again, that vigil has just wrapped up a short time ago, but it was happening here at golden gate park. live in san francisco, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. local churches are offering prayers for those in newtown, connecticut. >> we're going to pray for the families! >> about 100 people came together to find hope and comfort through prayer last night at the gospel church in oakland. pastor doris limb breck pre-empted the regular friday night service and called for people of faith to unite and stand together. in walnut creek, a couple dozen people gathered last night

a bill to congress addressing gun violence. speaker of the house john boehner canceled the republican's weekly address in the wake of the shooting. local advocates are also calling for stricter gun regulations. coming up at 9:16, we'll introduce you to a san francisco mass shooting survivor who is among the voices demanding more gun control in the wake of this tragedy. and we want to update you on a developing story we first told you about in oakland about a half hour ago. police tell us they have found three shooting victims in the area of 85th avenue and international boulevard. one person was discovered at a street corner, while the other two victims were found outside a nearby home. the oakland tribune is reporting police are also checking out a woman who went to the hospital with gunshot wounds. investigators suspect the two incidents may be related. . and in weather, here's our live camera. we do have cloud cover out there, some pockets of fog. in fact, shows up nicely here on

our lafayette camera, high clouds up above the fog bank, and eventually rain showers with the clouds approaching the afternoon hours. now, the first thing you will notice this morning, it is cold out there, at least with respect to weather. temperatures are in the 30s. fairfield right now, 37 degrees. san jose, 44. and san francisco, currently 46 degrees. here we go with the rain showers, primarily to our north. and the snow areas, that white shade linking up with the snow, locally we could have snow levels coming down to about 3000 feet. not all this activity reaching the ground yet, but that will be changing, especially after 11:00 this morning. we could have a few sprinkles out there, especially up in parts of the north bay, sonoma county, napa county. no reports yet, but i suspect we do have pockets of drizzle. for this morning, cloudy and cold, a chance of a few showers. heading into the afternoon, showers likely with readings mainly in the 50s, right around 50 to 54 degrees. you can see the source of the rainfall, up to our north and

west. all of this moisture, this is not going to produce significant rainfall, but still enough to wet the roadways as we do head into the afternoon. and not a significant snow producer up in the sierra. in fact, this picture snapped up toward king vail at 7:00 this morning. chains not required on 80 or 50. overnight, lake tahoe, south lake tahoe had a temperature of 1, 1 degree. forecast model showing you all the cloud cover this morning at 9:00. then into the afternoon hours, we do bump up the rainfall probability across the bay area. once again, on the light to maybe a few moderate cells sweeping across the region. and the overall tendency this evening, we scale back on the coverage and also the intensity, but still a chance of a few pop-up showers tonight and into sunday morning. but just a slight chance for your sunday, highest chance being up in the north bay. temperatures this afternoon, mainly in the 50s. low to mid-50s. after that cold start this morning, not much of a recovery this afternoon. pretty much matching the highs

9:15. we are following breaking news just into our newsroom. we are learning from the state department that hillary clinton has fainted and suffered a concussion. the latest word is that she is now recovering at home, but we'll of course continue to follow that story for you. well, flags have been lowered across the country to honor the shooting victims. president obama has ordered flags at public buildings to be flown at half staff until sunset on tuesday. flags have been lowered across the bay area and in the nation's capital. in newtown, connecticut, state police say they have collected, quote, good evidence, that may explain what led to the nation's most deadliest school shootings yesterday. we've got a team in newtown gathering information on the investigative work being done right now and will bring that to you live at 9:30. a san francisco mass shooting survivor is among the people demanding more gun control in the wake of this tragedy. activist mindy finkelstein was shot back in 1999, when she was 16 years old. she was working at a counselor at a jewish summer camp when a ne-yo nazi gunman opened fire.

she now volunteers at a speaker for the brady campaign against gun vie lance. >> people say it's too early to talk about it. this is the perfect time. doctors see this all the time. and it's killing people. >> the guns used in the connecticut shooting were apparently owned legally by the gunman's mother. mark kelley, the husband of mass shooting victim and former congressman gabrielle giffords say the connecticut shooting is proof that more reform is needed. people in oakland and san francisco are being asked to give up their guns in exchange for cash. there are two separate gun buyback operations from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. today. the one in oakland is at st. benedict's church on 82nd avenue at bancroft. in san francisco, you can turn in your guns at the omega boys club on tennessee at 22nd street. you must show proof of residency. each person can turn in up to

three guns for $200 each. a bomb threat forced police to evacuate part of the great wall in milpitas. police evacuated 20 stores yesterday afternoon after finding a message on a bathroom wall that read "bomb in building." bomb sniffing dogs searched the mall, but no explosives were found. mall officials are reviewing surveillance camera footage to try and identify the source of the threat. this morning, police are also investigating an apparent murder-suicide on the las vegas strip. police say a man opened fire last night near the entrance of the excaliber hotel, killing a woman before he took his own life. frightened guests ran for cover after hearing the gunshots. >> we were just going to go back to our room and people started running up the escalator and they were, like, yelling it's a shooting! we didn't really know what was going on. i turned around and ran for my life. i was, like, so scared.

>> neither the gunman or victim has been identified. police say it appears the woman who was killed worked at the hotel's concierge desk. the relationship between the shooter and the victim isn't known. well, caltrain and local law enforcement agencies are preparing for an emergency right now. but it's all just a drill. that drill happening in redwood city on an unused portion of track near costco at middlefield and woodside roads. you may see police and fire trucks, lights and sirens on, but there is no anticipated disruption to traffic or train service. iraq war veteran scott olson filed a lawsuit against the city of oakland and the oakland police department for injuries he received in an occupy demonstration last year. olson says a bean bag shot by police into the crowd hit him on the head, fractured his skull, and caused brain damage. the suit names one officer who says olson -- who olson says fired tear gas at protesters who were trying to help him. it also lists as many as 10 uni'd officers, including the one who fired the bean bag. the suit doesn't specify the

amount of damages olson is seeking. the president of afghanistan says u.s. and nato troops should leave afghan villages as soon as possible. hamid karzai says international forces will end their combat mission in 2014, but says afghan forces will take charge of securing afghanistan next year. he wants all other troops to begin leaving his nation's villages sooner rather than later. a special event is being held in san bruno this morning to honor service members who made the ultimate sacrifice. volunteers will lay wreaths at the golden gate cemetery within the hour and at cemeteries across the nation, including arlington national cemetery. wreaths across america is an annual tradition that dates back two decades. well, we are continuing to follow the elementary school shooting in connecticut, where a press conference is scheduled to get under way soon. we'll have the latest developments on that. >> we are starting off this saturday morning, cloudy and cold. coming up, a look at updated live storm tracker 2 and we'll track the rainfall, at least the

. well, looks like it's going to be a white christmas in flagstaff, arizona. that city has already received several inches of snow, thanks to a winter storm that barreled into the northern arizona town on thursday. flagstaff schools were closed on friday and that snow has prompted people who live in the valley or on the desert floor to drive north to check it all out. >> when we see snow coming, we hit the road. >> if you stay moving, you stay warm. soon as you're done shoveling, it gets cold. >> don't stop moving. the snowy weather pushed back the graduation ceremony for northern arizona university and there is more snow on the way. a second storm is expected to hit the area this weekend. new this morning, the polls have opened in egypt for closely watched vote on the country's proposed constitution. the vote has polarized the nation. the new constitution has the support of egyptian president

. >> if i could go back, i would embrace them. because i had no idea what they had gone through. a nation still trying to come to terms with the loss of so many innocent lives, as investigators try to figure out what led up to yesterday's mass shooting in connecticut. good morning. welcome back to mornings on 2, saturday, december 15th. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm david steve enzon, in for mike mibach. the deadly school shooting in connecticut is the top story we're following this morning. new details continue to come out surrounding the events that led up to that shooting. renee marsh joins us live from newtown, where another press conference is scheduled to get under way in a few moments. renee? >> reporter: that's right, good morning. we heard one update from law enforcement earlier this morning. they weren't quite ready to release the name of the victims

just yet, but they did say that at some point today, we can expect to possibly get the names of those victims. perhaps that could be happening shortly. it is unclear at this point. but we can tell you they say investigators will be processing that crime scene for at least another day or two and in the meantime, the people within this community, they are desperate and eager for even more answers. saturday morning brought new details about the attack on this elementary school and the victims killed. >> the victims have been positively identified by the officer, the chief state medical examiner. they are still in the process of doing some of their work. >> reporter: there are still many questions about friday's shooting at sandy hook elementary school, but the most common one is why. >> in these times of troubles and trevail, when the unthinkable happens in our very

midst, our faith is tested. >> reporter: at the center of the puzzle he, adam lanza, the 20-year-old identified by law enforcement officials as the shooter. he had no known criminal record before entering the school friday morning, dressed in black fatigues and a military vest. he was found dead in a classroom, apparently by his own hand. the victims are being mourned across the nation, like at this candlelight vigil at the u.s. capitol friday night. >> everybody in town knows everybody. there's nobody who is not going to be affected by it. it's awful. >> reporter: the president's weekly address also focused on the tragedy. >> the love they felt for those they lost endures not just in their own memories, but also in their communities and in their country. >> reporter: but nowhere is the sadness more palpable than in this small community. >> it's impacted the town, impacted the state, the world, the u.s., it's a horrible thing, you know. like people say, why?

>> reporter: and during that briefing earlier this morning, law enforcement gave a very promising piece of information to the media here. they said that they collected some, what they called good evidence that could color in for us more detail as to what led to that shooting yesterday. back to you. >> a little background on newtown. the community is more than 300 years old, nestled in the southwest part of the state. it was founded in 1705. the most recent census puts the population at more than 27,000 people. many work and commute to new york city, 60 miles away. newtown is also well off economically with a median household income of $108,000. one celebrity who reportedly owns a home there is the author of "the hunger games," suzanne collins. there is a deep sense of sorrow and loss in the bay area as well. people are coming together in san francisco to reflect on what

happened. ktvu's allie rasmus sent us this video from a vigil in golden gate park. she is gathering information and will join us again at 9:45. well, the victims of the connecticut shooting rampage were remembered in a solemn memorial at a newtown church. close to a thousand people packed st. rose of lima catholic church last night, where 26 candles were lit in honor of those killed at the school. hundreds more stood in the freezing cold outside that service to pay their respects. >> by being here, you speak eloquently to the nation and you are sending a message to all of america, and believe me, the hearts and prayers of america are with you tonight. >> some mourners stayed at that church hours after that service ended to pray and to remember the victims. the connecticut school shooting is also drawing comparisons to the columbine tragedy, where two students killed 13 people before taking their own lives.

some columbine survivors say news of the connecticut shooting was particularly difficult to hear, because they are now parents themselves. first responders at columbine also found themselves reliving the tragedy. >> some of the photos, some of the footage, it's almost like a carbon copy of what i saw 14 years ago. so there's an effect on a lot of people. the events of 14 years ago put a lot of mileage on a lot of people, myself. >> some columbine survivors have created a group to help survivors of mass shootings and their families. the group started this past summer, after a gunman opened fire at a movie theater in aurora, colorado, killing 12 people. the shooting rampage at sandy hook elementary school is raising questions about security at all schools. one assistant superintendent is calling it a wakeup call. >> i think we're doing everything we can, but everything you can isn't enough if something like this happens. >> the problem with a drill, we're calm. we know it's going to happen. >> the assistant superintendent

of the livermore valley school district says livermore schools already conduct emergency drills, but administrators will review security measures in the wake of the shooting. other teachers and youth center employees are quietly working to prevent something similar from happening. the coordinator of this youth center says safety policies are reviewed regularly, but getting children ready for an emergency might scare them. at this after-school program in oakland, the kids were not told what happened. >> i have a kindergartner. it's heart breaking to think about what these parents have to go through, you know, and saying farewell to their kids in the morning, it's just -- it's heart breaking. it really is heart breaking. >> everyone here had a good idea, he -- >> reporter: educators say there's a fine line between alarming children and keeping them safe. immediately after the shooting, dozens of people gathered outside the white house for an impromptu vigil. >> the name of our god that is

good and holy, we pray. >> many in attendance belong to gun control advocacy groups who happened to be in washington for a leadership training conference. they chanted, lit candles, and pleaded for political action. now, you, too, can offer your condolences, share your thoughts at the ktvu channel 2 facebook page, where you can also post messages on our wall. an oregon mall where a gunman opened fire killing three people has reopened, amid tight security. memorial books and stars will be available throughout the weekend for shoppers at clackamas town center near portland to leave messages. mourners also attended a vigil last night near the mall entrance and plans are in the works for a permanent memorial. mall officials say extra security is in place. well, a teenager is in critical condition after being shot in a drive-by shooting in san francisco. police say four men in a vehicle shot at a teenager near 24th street avenue just before 1:30 this morning. the injured teen then walked

about a block to san francisco general hospital. police have not released any specific suspect information. morgan hill police are asking for the public's help in finding a man in connection with three suspicious incidents involving girls and young women. in the latest incident, a 13-year-old girl says she was walking yesterday morning, when a man got out of a white van and started chasing her. the girl managed to run to a neighbor's house for help. police say they have received two other reports of suspicious behavior, with the same description of a white van. the suspect is described as a white man in his mid-30s, short and chubby with balding hair or a crew cut. anyone with information on the man's identity or on any of the incidents is asked to call morgan hill police. the chp is mourning the death of an officer killed in a motorcycle accident in solano county. the officer has not been identified, but it happened just before 6:00 last night. police say he was off duty, riding on highway 12 near red top road just outside fairfield,

when investigators say a pickup truck turned in front of him. that driver reportedly sped up to get out of the motorcycle's way, but the motorcycle clipped the back of the truck, throwing the officer into oncoming traffic. three members of a santa clara family are dead after their car was hit while they were trying to fix a flat tire on interstate 280 near redwood city. the chp says the family pulled their lexus into the center divider north of edgewood road around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. a volkswagon then veered into the divider and hit the lexus. a mother and her two children were killed. investigators say the 83-year-old driver of the volkswagon was reportedly speeding and could be charged with vehicular manslaughter. . we're waking up to cloudy and cold conditions this early saturday morning. live camera looking toward san francisco, looks like the low

. good saturday morning. time now, 9:46. roof camera in oakland showing you lots of cloud cover out there. no rain drops just yet, but that will soon be changing. forecast in a few minutes. 9:46. big story this morning, of course is the tragedy out of newtown, connecticut. investigators trying to learn more about adam lanza, the gunman who is believed to have shot the 20 school children and six school workers, his mother and himself yesterday. police have said this morning they have very good evidence from the scene. they have not released any more details, though, or have not said what they think made him do it. now, even though the bay area is 3000 miles away from newtown, the sense of loss is still being felt here and there are vigils being held across the bay area to remember the victims and their families. ktvu reporter allie rasmus is live in san francisco, where one of those vigils was held this morning. >> reporter: that vigil wrapped

up about an hour ago, here at the aids memorial grove in golden gate park. this is the entrance, but the grove where it was taking place is down this dirt path, probably about 200 feet, off to the left where the actual grove is. it started at 8:00 this morning. it happened a bit away from the nearest street, but they did have a small group of people who came out at 8:00 this morning. this is what the scene looked like earlier, again, about an hour ago. a small group of people gathered around a christmas tree that was set up in the grove. one woman left a stuffed animal. and people were saying prayers and writing cards to the people of newtown, connecticut. the mood in that group was somber. lot of people were very quiet, saying prayers to themselves, meditating, taking time just to reflect on what happened. some people did get very emotional and -- we did talk to a couple of people there about why they felt compelled to show up this morning. >> we are a community and i just don't know them. i haven't met them. but it doesn't mean that they are not my neighbors.

doesn't mean they are not people that i don't love. >> in times of uncertainty and tragedy, we want to gather together, offer a space for prayer for contemplation for community and connection, when all of our thoughts go to what do we believe, what's right and wrong. >> reporter: now, the vigil was organized by a san francisco nonprofit group called faith studio. the organizer explains the group usually puts together improm tee spiritual gatherings for anyone in the community in times of crisis or sadness, times when people need to come together. there is another vigil scheduled for 4:00 today. this one is organized by supervisor john avilos, in the excels your excelsior district. students were offered counseling and extra security as they returned to a south bay school threatened with violence. flags were flown at half staff yesterday at monta vista high school in cupertino in honor of

the victims of newtown. but the day before, graffiti and threat was written. >> we're kind of docile, but it shows we've got stuff, we've got people who know what to do. >> bomb sniffing dogs went through the high school again yesterday, looking for anything suspicious. nothing was found. a sheriff's department spokesperson said they do not have any suspects. family and friends are remembering a concord man killed while riding his skateboard. a candle light vigil was held last night for 21-year-old scott hickerson at the site of the accident, which took place one woke eek. police say hickerson was riding in a crosswalk on monument boulevard and eriksson road last friday, when he was hit by an suv. a man convicted of raping three women in san francisco was sentenced to 373 years to life in prison. and that is the maximum sentence frederick dozier could have received. last week, he was convicted on

25 counts, relating to three sexual counts that took place last year. he was also ordered to pay $350,000 in fines and restitution. if you haven't mailed holiday gifts yet, get ready for the crowds at the post office. monday is expected to be the busiest mailing day of the year. workers for the post office are urging people to use priority mail to make sure packages get to their destination on time. fedex also expects to be busy this holiday season, with about 280 million packages being sent worldwide between thanksgiving and christmas. you may have noticed the prices continue to fall at the pumps and there could be even more relief, come next week. experts say gas prices are expected to fall to their lowest level of the year by monday. the national average is expected to fall below $3.28 a gallon. that's the amount drivers paid last january. a combination of high oil prices and supply shortages caused refinery and pipeline problems, keeping prices up this year. here in california, the current average for regular unleaded

the shooting and explain that school is a safe place. the sandy hook elementary school shooting is the nation's second deadliest school shooting on record. and just the latest outbreak of gun violence on a school campus. seven people were killed, three more injured in april in a shooting at oikos university in oakland. this past february, three people were killed and two more injured when a teen opened fire in the cafeteria of chardon high school in ohio. the 2007 virginia tech shooting is the deadliest in the nation's history, when 32 people were killed and 27 more were injured when a student opened fire. it appears the federal government will not take action in states where recreational marijuana is legal, at least for now. in an interview, president obama says it doesn't make sense from a prioritization point of view to focus on drug use in states where marijuana is legal. possession of up to an ounce of marijuana is now legal for adults over the age of 21 in washington state and in colorado. the nih labor dispute is
