news at a fire. ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega joins us now from the scene. janine de la vega is down there at the scene. we will check in with her in a moment. meantime oakland police are searching for the person who abandoned a stolen truck caught fire causing a nearby fire to also go up in flames. and ktvu channel 2 reporter lorraine blanco is there with more information on who was injured and video of the huge flames. lorraine. >> reporter: good morning. investigators are looking for the person who started that fire and they are also looking for the person who stole that vehicle. you can see behind me the amount of wreckage left here this morning. we also notice there are security cameras out here. police will be checking that out. firefighters arrived just after

midnight to find the car fully engulfed. they called it two alarms just after 1:00 a.m. here. there was one person inside the building during that fire. >> it was a security guard that was inside. our crews brought hem out. he was treated for smoke inhalation and transported to an area hospital. >> all right so we are looking at video. lorraine blanco down at that huge fire. just amazing video down there. and we'll have more on that throughout the morning. also happening now two mile stretch of i-5 near the oregon border still closed after a series of crashes in freezing temperatures. at least 60 cars lost control on black ice near the anderson

grade. that is outside of yreka last night. cal fire says the roads were extremely icy at the time. 16 people were injured. seven of them had to be taken to the hospital. 4:32 this morning. here in the bay area a freeze warning is in effect in the north bay until 8:00 a.m.. that could cause dangerous conditions for crops and water pipes. the best course of action is is to wrap pipes. >> something to keep the water moving because that is what does it. when water stops moving it will stay in there and expand. once you get the heat coming out it crack l crack. >> growers are also covering plants. homeless shelters are providing winter shelters for those who normally live on the street. it's offering a cup of coffee, hot male he'll and bed for 110

men to keep them safe ring the cold nights. classes will resume this morning at san jose city college following a campus lock down. investigators say a man called police at 4:00 yesterday afternoon. claiming someone had a gun at the technology building. students were evacwaited at 5 -- evacuated at 5:00. >> we started clearing the building and looking for the suspect or person matching that description that was given to us. did not find anyone matching that description. >> the last students were allowed to leave the technology building just after 8:00 last night. certainly a long afternoon. this happened in the middle of finals week. some students just graduated from the emergency medical technician program actually had their ceremony cut short. >> we were all a little bit

frightened. we all pulled out our cell phones to see what was going on. >> we were all trying to stay calm and waiting to hear things. >> in another part of the building a journalism is took photos of the swat team conducting their search. >> this was at the campus of san jose state. you can see another part of the building they were searching. officers have not been able to trace the original 911 call. the college's president told us they are purchasing surveillance cameras for the campus. new this morning president obama is tapping vice president joe biden to lead a program to curb gun violence. the president will discuss the plan during a white house press conference today. also just hours from now senator barbara boxer will introduce new legislation to

increase security at school. you recall 20 children and six adults were killed last friday. the gunman also took his life. the new legislation would provide state and local officials with new resources to strengthen security on school campuses. house democrats want to ban gun magazines. the bill would magazines containing more than ten rounds of ammunition and outlaw the transfer, possession, of high capacity mags going forward. the bill is getting support following the connecticut tragedy. we have new information about what may have motivated the 20-year-old gunman in connecticut who also killed his mother before that shooting rampage. a long-time resident tells fox news that the gunman was very angry after learning that his mother was taking steps to have him committed to a psychiatric facility. meantime the fbi is trying to salvage the hard drive of the

computer taken from the gunman's home but investigators says it appears he smashed it. so far they have been uni believe to retrieve any information. as investigators piece together clues, several more victims of the school shooting will be laid to rest today. coming up at 5:43 we will take you live to newtown, connecticut with more on today's services and the latest on the investigation into the shooting. we want to go back to breaking news. fire at an apartment complex in campbell where a body has been found. ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega is there at the scene. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, brian. we are here on kenis drive where you can see there are police and fire investigators here on the scene where a fire broke out in a storage unit under a carport. right now sergeant gary burg joins me to tell me exactly what happened here. >> a little after 1:00 this

morning we received a call from a fire coming from the detached parking structure. when officers and firefighters arrived they found a fire that was burning and after extinguishing that fire a deceased body was found inside. >> what appears to have happened? are you calling this suspicious? >> we're woking a-- we're working alongside the county arson investigators to determine a cause. >> reporter: were there a lot of people on the scene? did anybody see anybody running away? >> there were neighbors on scene who were the ones that actually called us. there is -- we are still following up on things. nothing too out of the ordinary. >> reporter: okay. and at this point and at this point you are going to be here for several hours investigating to trying to figure out if this was done purposely? >> we will be working jointly

just be careful up there. we don't have any major crashes. let's take a look at 80 westbound as you head up to the mccarthur maze. that looks pretty good here. it's a nice drive. you might want to get in the car, turn that heater on to full blast and head on down the road it should be a nice drive for you. the morning commute westbound bay bridge it looks good. i just want to remind you not to leave your car running with the key on and not guarded. sometimes people get these ideas doing things. so make sure you watch your car when you warm it up. and this mornings commute on northbound 280 getting up to highway 17 this traffic does look good. let's go to steve. >> you can't use big words like that before 5:00 a.m.. enough you will get soft. lots of 20s 37 we have freeze warnings out to the north bay valleys. these go from 3:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m.. i'm waiting for some to come in. i believe i got a 24 from brent out in livermore. east livermore. not surprised by that. so it's not just the north bay valleys. that is where the freeze warning is. frost advisory for everyone else. mid 30s for many locations. 20s already. santa rosa is in there. napa in there. fairfield as well. it will be a cold, cold day. i think we went 49 for them on the forecasted high today. a lot of low 30s. even oakland airport is 45. two up in tahoe. 28 degrees in ukiah. 26 up in redding. this looks to be the coldest morning already the leading edge of a big change toward wetter pattern. higher clouds closer toward the north coast. it will be sunny today.

temperatures already in the 20s. frost advisory elsewhere. it will be sunny today. back to our continuing coverage of the newtown shootings. more victims of the school massacre will be laid to rest today. reporter republican republican -- rene marsh joins us live. >> reporter: you know the first thing that caught our attention this morning is that we saw several school buses on their way to the second day of school here in newtown since that deadly school shooting. school is very different here these days. parents have cautiously sent their kids back to school. the close knit community is forever changed because of those 20 children who will never return to class.

the investigation continues into what sparked the shooting rampage. adam lanza left a smashed computer at his home but they have not been able to retrieve any data from it. within four hours two funerals were held yesterday. >> i'm watching a sea of people leaving a funeral for a child and another sea of people waiting at the side of the church trying to get in for the next funeral. it's really beyond words. >> reporter: teacher victoria soto will be laid to rest today and parents will bury more children. parents of grace mcdonald say they take comfort in the thought that her daughter is with her friends. >> i invision them holding hands and their all together up there and up there with their wonderful principal. >> reporter: at a vigil last

such tragedy does not happen again. a former security guard accused of shooting off a gun outside of a shopping mall is linked to several other shootings. investigators say 42-year-old marco fired 54 shots into the air outside a new port beach mall saturday. no one was shot. he has been involved in ten similar shootings since april. including two near disney land and another outside the same new port mall. he remains in jail without bail. the leaders of an independent panel that harassly criticized security in ben tobacco city will explain their findings today. the u.s. ambassador and three other americans were killed in a september 11 attack. meanwhile democrats are rejecting the fiscal cliff plan

b by republicans. boehner stays his plan b is a fallback in case they don't get a deal done before the end of the year. his plan is to increase tax rates for those making $1 million a year and keep them the same for everyone else. senate democratic leader harry reid says plan b won't make it through the senate where democrats are in the majority. instar gram is responding to the new terms of service. instagram founder is now thanking users for their input about new rules. one says instagram could sell any photos posted to advertisers without notifying or compensating the account holder. now it says it has no intention of selling user photos. >> a lot of people talking about that yesterday. >> oh yeah. 4:49 now. it's cold out there today. let's see how it's effecting

welcome back. time now 4:54. the drakes bay oyster company has a little more time to wrap up operations. a new agreement with the interior department allows the company to plant and grow new oysters. that is to avoid layoffs. the mobile homes those workers live in won't have to be removed immediately. they now have until march 15th to remove all personal property. the company is still filing a legal challenge to keep the company open. 4:54 now. food service workers at oakland international airport say they are prepared to strike during the busy holiday travel season

unless they get a new contract. they have been without a contract since june unless an agreement is reached by midnight thursday they plan to walk off the job. workers say they they're at odds with an airport contractor with medical cost and proposed wage freezes. let's check in with sal. hopefully traffic early but good. >> yeah. the only thing to worry about if you drive and run into a sprinkler head that has turned into ice on the road. we haven't had any of that reported. let's take a look at the traffic here on interstate 880. the traffic is moving along in both directions. the traffic looks good into downtown oakland. the bay bridge toll plaza is light. and on the peninsula, 101 and 280 those freeways are off to a good start. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. 20s to the north.
