all that green, rosemary. >> yes, this is just getting started. it will intensify. heavy rain over parts of the north bay and the santa cruz mountains getting closer here. into napa valley, moderate rainfall. and we get a little bit closer. sonoma also dealing with this. sliding south. moderate rain. redwood city. and the santa cruz mountains and the decent rain. palo alto, down into sunnyvale and we have parts of livermore, oakland, reporting moderate rain at the time. it is going to shift along highway 13. this is just the beginning. the rain will continue for several hours. we have a wind advisory to talk about. i will share that with you. more on the rain in just a bit highway patrol trying to figure out if the weather had anything to do with a big

accident in oakland involving nine vehicles. it shut down some lanes of 880 for about an hour. allie rasmus is joining us live from oakland with an update on the situation. allie? >> reporter: all lanes are back up. for an hour and a half, this highway right behind us, this was a complete mess. this was the scene when we arrived this morning around 5:00. for awhile. traffic, all northbound lanes of 880 were at a complete stand still. >> northbound, before the ramp, this is where the 9-car pile up happened. according to the sergeant, two cars were initially involved in a crash. they were blocking the right hand lane. then other cars behind the crash were not able to stop quickly enough to avoid it. they said they probably or likely were not able to avoid it either because of the speed

and/or the rain. that led to a 9-car pile up on interstate 880. >> it was raining hard. i don't know if they were parked on the freeway or slowed down. i hit a car. another car hit me. >> reporter: now one of the drivers involved said he bought a brand new bmw yesterday. it was completely totaled. he said it was a christmas present for his mom. even though the car is totaled, he said he is sure his mom was glad that he wasn't hurt and only the car. only one person went to the hospital because of the pile up. that person complained of minor pain. not a serious injury. everyone else seemed to be okay. they proceeded to go to the hospital. allie rasmus. ktvu. two people were injured after an accident shut down 880 last night. that happened on 2:30 a.m.

near the a street exit. chp said four cars were involved. one truck overturned and the crash is still under investigation there is a lot of storm damage to be cleaned up all over the bay area. and the wind and rain in san francisco caused the anding of a gas station to collapse on to a car. this happened at 17th. the driver is grateful no one was hurt. >> i was grateful we weren't in there. >> the anding did, however, cause damage to the hood and trunk. there were no customers pumping gas at the time. the pumps were not damaged which they said is lucky. because there could have been an explosion. flooding shut down the lanes of the great highway in san francisco. drivers are being urged to slow down and look out for standing water. >> it knocked out power to thousands in the bay area.

>> more than 700 businesses in bay point are in the dark. san rafael dealing with this. and they lost power yesterday. pg&e said it was caused by a tree branch that struck a power line. >> the tree fell across the road. and broke three of our lines, primary lines. that shorted out the circuit and opened up the breaker in the sub station. >> crews were able to get the power back on within 90 minutes. the weather is having an impact on holiday travel. we spoke to the manager who said the airport is not currently reporting any delays. but the airport expects to see delays later this morning. and cancellations. passengers faced delays for about an hour at sfo, storms in the midwest and east coast are

causing the delays. they want you to check your flight before you go to the airport. >> we came from san diego and we are an hour and a half late. we thought it was going to be worse, to be honest with you. >> oakland and san jose is not reporting any delays. we will keep you updated and rosemary will have another check on the forecast in a few minutes. firefighters in palo alto are credited with saving a women in her wheelchair around 12:30 this morning. when the firefighters arrived they said the one apartment was full will you unguled into flames and then they jumped into action to save those inside. >> after the civilians broke the window, they were able to lift her up in heavy smoke condition. the women were transported to the medical center. they are expected to be okay. a firefighter was treated for

minor smoke inhalation. in all, forints were damaged. they think the fire started in the kitchen. two are dead after a shooting in oakland. the first happened yesterday afternoon near palo alto avenue. that victim is in stable didn't. then two men were shot at 32nd and chestnut streets. one was dead at the scene and the other is in critical condition. no arrests were made on to the continuing coverage for connecticut, this is a week after a gunman killed 26 people. united way said the official fund for donations has more than $2.8 million. a board of community leaders is being assembled. they will decide how the money will be used. instead of sending donations in, they are encouraging to donate in member are you of

others for the funerals. >> they are coming to a close. yesterday a service was held for josephine gay and 6-year-old anamarquez green and emilie parker was also laid to to class on january 3rd. they will be attending a school in a nearby town following the shooting in newtown, connecticut, people are taking a stand against gun violence. >> demon straighters held signs for those 26 lost at the sandy hook elementary school she is pushing for stricter gun laws. >> i can't even tell you the number of deaths that are caused by guns that were bought by not having a simplele background check and the

background system check needs to be reworked in some way. >> many people are also pushing for a ban on assault rifles. saying those type should be left for the military and not in the hands of civilians. >> they picked outside a sporting good store. it opened a short time and was forced to close because of the protest. people held up signs that said no guns here and protect your children they are taking part in a holiday tradition right now. they are preparing thousands of meals for people who are unable to leave their homes for the holidays. >> for many seniors who live alone. a visit by a volunteer is the only contact they will have on christmas. >> they will be delivered on christmas morning. >> they are asking for holiday donations. they are holding curb side drop off through monday. they are specifically asking

for hams and pantry items as well as socks and cash donations. they can be dropped off at the intersection of golden gate and leaven worth. >> it is going to be an another wet morning. rosemary is watching all of that for us. wind advisories we are talking about. >> pretty much the entire bay area. north bay, south, east, west, everywhere. gusts of 50 miles an hour are possible. we are watching them pick up this morning. the brunt of the system, the worst of it will come about 10:00 a.m. and for the second half of the afternoon will begin to drop off. live look at the estuary. it as stormy morning. we have got heavy rain falling over the north bay and areas along the east bay around highway 13. actually. i want to get in a little bit closer. we may see pretty good rain.

i will put the calculation on this. 7:15 for danville and 737 for brentwood and if the cell holds together. it could fall apart and break you that's what we are seeing in the east bay. this is what we are seeing over parts of the north bay. we have rain falling over st. helena. and rates of more than an inch an hour. keeping in mind that they continue to pass through. not going to sit over helena for an hour. >> we have light moderate rain and steady light rain. over san mateo and we see moderate rain over half moon bay and seeing pretty good rain and san francisco, san jose, i should say. and seeing light rain as well. heavy rain expected throughout the morning hours and after the early half of the afternoon. with that also, the possibility of thunderstorms. we have this low right off the coastline. that is going to add to that.

right time. >> my immediate reaction was. it was traveling fast and i knew there wasn't an option to stop the cart. but i had to do something to try to stop traffic. it was headed towards the busy highways. >> so the officer drove the squad car right on the highway and activated his lights and ran after the cart and grabbed the boy. >> the baby's mother was placing her other child in the car when the cart took off. >> wow. >> hold on. >> okay. >> baby is okay. >> we will go to rosemary and talk about the morning we are having. crazy, right. >> we will not be okay for awhile. we have wind-driven rain. it is into the early afternoon and finally then a break. look at how widespread it is. everybody getting rain at this point. light to moderate at times and even heavy over parts of the saint helena, napa valley. and down into novato.

important warning after a nine car pile up in the east bay. welcome back to "mornings on 2". i am mike mibach. >> i am claudine wong. >> we are developing news where 880 has reopened near the 11th street exit follow ago car crash. allie rasmus is live with us on how the crash happened. allie? >> reporter: it is likely rain and speed played a role in the nine can car pile up. this is right behind us. and northbound 880 before the 980 on ramp. and if you take a look at the video. traffic was at a complete standstill for an hour. it started with two vehicles in a crash initially. they are blocking the right hand lane. and according to the chp, other cars behind the crash were

going too fast and not able to stop in time. >> that led to a nine car pile up on the freeway. >> police believe speed and rain may have been a factor in free venting drivers from stopping to avoid the crash. >> the cars spun around and when they moved out of the way. they went in. >> reporter: now one of the drivers involved in the 9 - car crash was driving a brand new bmw, he bought it yesterday and it was a christmas present for his mom. luckily, he and no one else involved in the crash is seriously injured. one person went to the hospital as a precaution. they were complaining of minor pain and no serious injuries in all of this. this should serve as a reminder for anyone driving today, there is bad weather conditions. there is wind, rain. and people need to slow down on thed roadways.

>> allie rasmus. ktvu. new snow is expected to fall this weekend. many ski resorts are reporting that most of their runs will be open by tomorrow. they expect the season is on track for more snow than the big winter we had just two years ago. search and rescue teams aresenning out a warning for people who will head up to the sierra-nevada. >> it happened at tahoe yesterday afternoon. she went out of bound and got lost. when she didn't realize where she was. she called 911 from her cellphone. they were able to find her and checked out by medics and released. it is going to be a white christmas in the sierra. but getting there may be a challenge. big challenge. we will take you up there and you can see, there is a roadway underneath the cars. you can see they're making their way up in the sierra. if you are planning to head up

interstate 80 or highway 50. chains are required. also, be prepared for possible road closures. >> this is what it looked like yesterday after it was forced to shut down because of several storm-related spinouts. they happened between coal fax and the state line. they were forced to wait in line for several hours. some just turned around and headed on back home. >> trying to get to tahoe for christmas. we saw a sign that said road closed and we thought they were kidding and they weren't. >> it had to be shut down several times yesterday. more snow is expected to fall today. if you want to head up to the sierra, be prepared for possibly big delays. a novato man was killed and others are recovering from injuries in san rafael. the man hit the center divide north of the central san rafael

2010. she and her sister left four children alone inside the home. all the children died in the fire. the power had been turned off in the house and the fire was most likely caused by a candle left burning inside the home the investigation continues this morning into child pornography allegations against the chief probation officer for san mateo county. we brought you this story on "mornings on 2". they are looking to see if stewart forest possessed child pornography. the u.s. postal inspection service is the lead investigative agency. state officials say children could be at risk because benefit cards were sent to the wrong addresses. more than 2600 cards were mailed to the wrong families. it is cause bid a commuter program error. it was sent to several families in san mateo and santa clara. nurses plan to walk off the
