complete bay area news coverage starts right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00 p.m. >> good evening. i am frank somerville. >> i am julie haener. a rash of home burglaries is getting special attention from the new mayor. he visited a victim after she told her story to ktvu channel 2 news. only on 2, ktvu's eric rasmussen was there. he joins us now with what is being done about the problem. >> reporter: we told you how this homeowner was concerned about burglars. today the mayor says he will consider suggestions to close this trail after dark and

encourage neighbors to use lighting and today people said they are just happy something is being done. >> nice to meet you. >> reporter: the mayor made this house call after she said her home was burglarized twice in one month. >> this path is the problem. >> reporter: she told us how thieves stole jewelry and hit the homes of several neighbors but she didn't expect her concerns would reach the top of government so quickly. >> hang on, i go, it is the mayor. and she was like -- >> listen to her concerns. she has ideas. >> reporter: some of the ideas include volunteer patrols and holding landlords accountable for who is renting their homes. we were with her today as she handed out fliers to neighbors.

two miles away, we heard from residents facing the same problems. >> what happened down the street here, three homes were burglarized this weekend by the same people. i know who they are. >> we need to have as many voices saying there is a problem. one person can't make the change. i need the whole village. >> reporter: the mayor said he is encouraging anyone to report concerns to him or the city. the police chief said they are conducting more interviews to add more officers. eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. new details in the murder case involving a businessman. today ktvu's alex savage went through documents and is here now with new details on how he was killed. >> reporter: this afternoon i went through the divorce filing by the victim. thousands of pages long.

and the documents suggest shady business dealings and a fraudulent divorce. although prosecutors aren't talking about why he was targeted. >> reporter: facing a murder charge he appeared in court this afternoon in san jose. he did not enter a plea and his attorney declined to comment. he is one of four people accused of killing the business man during a home invasion in november. they also face murder charges and he is charged as an accessory. he was killed with a metal object. prosecutors say the murder took place during the commission of a robbery. making three eligible for the death penalty. >> this is a very unusual case

to connect the dots, there is more we will learn about the connection. what did the victim know and how did he know these people. >> reporter: today we are learning more about his background. he owned mountain winery and a cell phone company. he is accused of shady business dealings. one partner claimed his divorce was on paper only, a way to shield assets. according to reports, he was heavy into drugs and alcohol and spend time with prostitutes. >> the three defendants are facing murder charges. this is still a very active investigation. i talked to with a surgent who said there could be more arrests. alex savage, ktvu channel 2

news. a group of roommates in san francisco were the victimles of a robbery this -- victims of a robbery this morning. five men broke into had apartment and held the victims at gun point. the victims said the robbers kept asking for 50 pounds of marijuana they can -- they believed were in the apartment. >> they were looking for something big. >> 15 minutes later they took off with cell phones, electronics, wallets and cash. fight between a father and son left them in the hospital. it happened early this morning. police say the father called 911 around 2:30 a.m. saying he had been stabbed 4 times. officers found his son suffering from trauma to his

head. both men were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive. father is making a plea tonight to help find his missing daughter. she disappeared in south lake tahoe. ktvu's ken pritchett is live near south lake tahoe with the search that is underway. ken? >> we told you about a press briefing where we learned new information. one, a cell phone signal had been detected, one they didn't know about from alyssa byrne's cell phone. sometimes in the hours around when she was last seen. the second information, there was a room to room search conducted of the hotel where the teen was staying with her friends. we know that she was making

daily phone contact with her parents. that ended new year's eve night. >> reporter: alyssa byrne was staying with three friends here at the casino hotel. this is the last place she was seen after 2:00 a.m. new year's day. >> my level of hope is she is out there. if you are, just come home. we love you. we miss you. anybody that any information please call the tip line that is established. we want to hear any tip. >> her father made a plea for help as search and rescue crews searched the area for any sign of her. she was here at the south lake tahoe community college monday night attending a music festival. friends say she left early and next was spotted that hotel -- at the hotel after midnight. >> sheriff's department brought

in a helicopter. >> reporter: investigators say her last confirmed cell phone location was the concert. but now they have discovered a new signal in the minutes after the new year. >> we are still analyzing that data. and we don't yet know if it is a phone call or a text. takes a little bit to determine that. and we still don't know the location of its use. >> reporter: on the morning and in the afternoon of new year's eve day alyssa byrne's twitter account shows two tweets, one saying she had just lost trust in a person she trusted most. the tweet suggested she could have been upset, however the sheriff's department said they are trying to confirm the tweets came from her. they say the witnesses who saw her that hotel on the morning of new year's eve say she was in good spirits.

care. california became the first state to get approval for healthcare exchanges. ktvu's health and science editor john fowler joins us now to explain who benefits and how much it will cost. >> reporter: remember covered california, it will be good news for millions. 6million californians, a million in the bay area have no health insurance. she can't afford coverage. >> i think i have to pay $150 a month and that is still half my check. >> reporter: he byes health insurance -- buys health insurance privately. >> pinches the check. there have been months i have been unable to meet my payment. >> reporter: california can create a healthcare market place. >> this is the biggest change

investigators say he was killed about 2:00 a.m. on sunday. the suspect in the killing was arrested that day. san francisco international airport will start closing runways to make repairs. so the airport suggests checking for delays. crews plan to build new areas, lighting systems. during the closures the number of incoming planes will drop from 60 to 30 an hour. cat that disappeared 8 years ago has been found and a happy reunion took place today in san francisco. ktvu's david stevenson was there. david. >> reporter: a happy ending for this cat and the owners. it is a family reunion that has
