hi, everybody. i'm beth troutman, and it's time for the best videos of the day and the stories behind them "right this minute." a man fleeing from police falls into a frozen pond. as a dive team works to save him -- >> he disappears. >> the unexpected ending you won't see coming. >> a ski resort gets shaken up when strong winds trap nearly 1,200 skiers on top of this mountain. why it took 13 hours for

rescuers to get the skiers down. a girl rocks out at the airport, but -- >> angela wasn't there to fly to or from anyplace. she literally just went down to l.a.x. to -- >> we have the reason behind her funky moves. and some dudes get their friend to try out a dog shock collar. >> you ready? >> see sid sit on "right this minute." >> large crowd gathered around this frozen pond in champagne, illinois, on new year's day. here's why. 20-year-old kenneth brown out there on thin ice. he is in the water at this point. according to police brown was bothering customers at a nearby restaurant when he was confronted by police. he took off, ran to this thin ice, and it cracked. the champagne fire department and champagne police are there. they have rope that is they're trying to throw out to this guy. that's not working. eventually brown disappeared. he is under the surface.

these initial first responders don't necessarily have the equipment to make an underwater rescue, so that's when you have to call in a dive team. the dive team came to the scene. they were able to pull this guy out in a few minutes, but unfortunately he was unresponsive and passed away wednesday morning. there entire thing only took a half an hour by the time he went out to the ice from the time the dive team was able to pull him on the water. >> i thn guy was running from police, but it's so heart breaking to see these people just inching closer and inching closer, and you think they're going to get to him, and then you just see him slip down below the surface of the water. disturbing. it's disturbing and unsettling. >> some people are saying, hey, you guys didn't do enough to rescue this guy, but wcia and the cornbelt fire chief -- >> they did exactly the right thing. they stayed on shore and kept talking to the individual. doing everything that they could do encourage him to stay on the surface of the ice. >> tough way to bring in the new

year even though the guy may have been doing something wrong, it's definitely a sad moment. this video comes to us from the an bani dougherty drug agents chasing after this guy in the 2013 dodge cha evade. he is driving over the curb and getting out of the way. he drooichz through a parking lot of some bess. he drives on the opposite side of the road. this chase lasts about five minutes in the albany area in georgia. >> they reached 85 miles per hour during this chase. >> this is terrifying. i mean, look at these cars having to just pull over to get out of the way of this guy. >> he is treating its car like it's a monster truck. he is driving over all kinds of stuff. >> what's interesting is that the only thing that is hurt in this whole thing was this 2013 challenger. no people were hurt. watch what happens after the guy gets out of the car. this is the suspect. 43-year-old gregory green. he throws something in the water. >> i'm sure you are guessing what could that possibly have been? >> i would guess drugs. >> yes. drug agents say that was cocaine, but here's the thing.

they were able to fish it out of the water. >> unbelievable. the guy didn't even stop to put his car in park. >> this is coat contain. let me tell you how it's wrapped up. addu xhabder major bill barry says this was so sealed up that they were able to fish it out just like this from the flint river. this is wrapped in plastic wrap, plastic bags. and bees wax. >> it was so well sealed you couldn't even get any kind of odor from it and that also prevented it from taking on water and sinking. >> they got a boat in the water and fished it out. this is one kilo of cocaine worth about $120,000. >> whoa. >> the suspect is behind bars. >> here is a video of a gas station in tennessee, and you see the van back up and smash into a store and, of course, they're after the atm. >> when are these store owners going to learn to not put the

atm right next to the windows? did they actually get away with it? >> they did get away with the atm. >> police are looking for these guys. they don't know who they are, and there isn't really a very clear picture of them. you can see some marks on the van. it looks like initials, part of a license plate, but nothing very clear. fortunately, there was no one at the store at the time, so nobody was injured. >> these guys at least were smart enough to use a van. most people have a pick-up truck, and then you have an atm in the back of your pick-up truck. at least this way they are kind of hidden. >> i love that now that -- there's nothing better than if you want to corps your face, get a van. while you're at it, you might as well fill the van with -- >> the smart thing to do would be to get a job and don't steal people's money. >> i like that better. whatou're seeing is a ski resort in spain and

high winds forced the ski lift to close down. look at this. you can see the snow blowing. you can see the ski lift chairs just blowing to and fro in the wind. these winds were so high that it trapped nearly 1,200 skiers on top of this mountain for nearly 13 hours. >> oh. >> they couldn't get down. they all had to end up staying inside the cafeteria area of the lodge on top of this mountain. it took rescuers hours in what they called snow grooming machines to get up to these people to bring them down some small groups, which is why the wait was so incredibly long. >> it was too windy for them to even ski down to the bottom. >> some expert skiers were able to get down on their own, but most people, can you see in this video, were just stranded. there was no way down. the wind got so high they were up to 70 miles per hour, and this is a mountain. we're talking 6,500 feet above

sea level. they're high up in the air. crazy high winds. look at these crowds of people. these were all holiday skiers. people on holiday. >> 13 hours. what do you do? you can only drink so much. >> they're all stuck in the ski resort. >> sharing hot cocoa and a warm snow bunny suit. >> i love it. >> that's a true love story. how did you meet? in a lodge in spain. >> stuck because of some winds. >> heavy winds brought us together. >> he saved my life. >> a new documentary showcases reporters who put themselves in danger to expose cartels. >> i can't imagine, you know, trying to fight this problem with a pen and paper. >> now meet the man who found out first hand just how tough it is. >> there's always a concern that something could happen.

[ speaking spanish ] >> tell us a little bit more about why this documentary is so important. we have the director via skype right this minute. >> tell us why you created this documentary. >> i was working on an immigration film, and i really felt like i needed perspective, and i asked around for reliable journalists, and that eventually led me to auto, the protagonist of the film, and after meeting with him it became clear to me that his story and the story of this newspaper were much more urgent than anything i had originally conceived of. >> do you worry for the safety of the journalists featured in this film? >> of course. there's always a concern that something could happen. while we were filming, the

editor of the newspaper, who is an outstanding editor and journalist, received death tletsz not for her participation in the film, but for her newspaper's continued aggressive coverage of organized crime and political corruption on that side of the border. >> what kind of impact do you hope this documentary has? >> really i think what's important, the film provides a platform for the journalists. they've been working hard and not really getting the respect they deserve.
