to gather ahead of tonight's big game between the 49ers and the packers. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu mornings on 2. >> and good morning. welcome. it's saturday january 12th. >> it is definitely cold out there. when will it warm up? >> it's a frosty start this morning. we do have partly cloudy skies and a wind just enough to help cancel some frost and freeze advisories. by the afternoon sunny and cool and a pattern we will stay in for the weekend. again it's a frigid one out there and if you are outdoors, bring along a thick coat or going to be the town of danville feeling the chill. alex savage is live to show us how people are coping. >> reporter: things sort of warmed up in the time since we arrived here about an hour or

so ago. it was below freezing about 30 degrees, now it's just above freezing this morning, very chilly out this way. overnight a lot of people say they had moisture come through the area and that's part of the reason that a lot of people have a lot of ice this morning on their windows. they will have to scrape some of that off. very cold out this way and frost on a lot of the cars that we saw this morning as temperatures dipped into the 30s in many of the inland spots. chilly for most people, but not for one man i talked to. he is from minnesota. >> it's above freezing so its it not freezing, it's perfect. we are good with this. >> reporter: this morning we dropped by side board a popular breakfast spot here. the overnight bakers were all bundled up. they are working in the kitchen trying to get owl the treats ready for everybody to come enjoy and they were telling me they really rely on the oven in the kitchen to keep them warm

when the temperatures drop like this. one of them said that he was actually delayed getting in to work because his car was iced over. >> car just thick ice, pulled out a credit card and tried to scrape it of and still had issues. i got in here later than normal but by the time my heater warmed up i was at work. >> reporter: that cafe has a pile of blankets with we saw there in the middle of the restaurant all ready to go for the breakfast crowd and they arrive later this morning and the place opens up you can imagine a lot of people will need them even in fact if they are sitting inside. very chilly even inside from at the restaurant though they have the heating lamps for people. those will be in use later you can imagine and a lot of people waking up will want to scrape off the windows before they head out. live in danville. >> stay warm. the winter weather is not only limited in northern california. i-5 is closed at the grapevine

due to icy conditions and multiple spin outs. it's the second time its been closed in southern california. the 40-mile stretch was shut down thursday north of los angeles forcing hundreds to sleep in their rigs. the grapevine is a major route but is frequently closed in winter. of course we are continuing to watch the temperatures. rosemary will have your full forecast in just a few minutes. you can cheka cold it is on our website, just go to the weather section. >> in overnight news one person died and another is in president hospital after a one car crash in the south bay. it happened just after 1:30 in the northbound lanes of interstate 880 in san jose. two men were inside a chevy when it veered off the road and hit a rock. the passenger of that car was ejected and he died at the scene. >> we have a call of a sole vehicle traffic collision. officers responded and located

a chevy colbalt. one party had been ejected. >> the driver went to the hospital with serious injuries, two northbound lanes had to be closed for a short time but the accident didn't cause a back up. investigators are checking to see if alcohol was a factor. >> an armed robbery suspect who escaped from armed custody is on the loose this is a picture of anthony hoskins. he broke free from his restraints while being taken to a doctor's appointment . he slipped out of his leg iros and waist and hand restraints. when the deputy opened the door hoskins ran off. >> not safe at all. there is nothing that we can do about it but i don't -- i would rather chai transfer to another hospital. >> now investigators did recover his jail clothing. they say he has relatives in the area. he is a is a accused of a

dozen robberies. >> a public memorial is being held after a teen who died. the body was found behind a snow bank. she had attended a music festival and may have tried to walk back to her hotel. the cause of her death is under investigation but the coroner found in sign of foul play. the memorial is at casa grande high school. the family is asking everybody to wear pink which was her favorite color. >> happening now we he are counting down this evening's big playoff game between the 49ers and packers. kickoff is scheduled for just after five. are you taking a live look at the picture outside of candlestick. very quiet. the rv parking lot is about half full right now. a lot of fans are still sleeping at this hour. they will wake up soon in the afternoon. the main parking lots will open

francisco. the sun is on its way. the official sunrise about 7:20, 7:25, these days depending where you are. fairfield the winds have let up just a bit. you were up to ten miles an hour and because of that fairfield actually starting out warmer than you were 24 hours ago. freezing but still warmer than you are. most of us in and around the bay area 35 in oakland. a few degrees cooler here. 32 in livermore. 30 or so in danville where we saw alex just a few moments ago. nevado checking in about 30, below freezing, at the airport 27 degrees reported there. so we have partly cloudy skies, very cold temperatures this morning, if you are going to get out any time soon be prepared for that winter weather and you have frost which weather as well. you may be scraping the wind shield, just had a light radar. you can see the clouds as they continue to pass through. we have the northerly flow that

continues. we have been locked in the pattern for a few days and we will continue this way. here is the ridge of high pressure. you can see how the clouds just scoot right down to california, even bringing us a slight chance for rain at times, few spring manies reported in the delta. we will continue that for today but the rain will stay off the coast. we will be partly cloudy, cool, temperatures in the low 50s for the afternoon. that's a few degrees below what we normally get. we will continue with this dry pattern in the northwesterly flow. 50 for concord. 50 in berkeley, 49 expected in san rafael, 58 for san francisco, in to the south bay low 50s for you, 53 san jose, 52 degrees for santa cruz. the extended forecast tomorrow morning is expected to be colder than this morning and the freeze watch a possibility once again, especially for inland areas and around the bay. we will see a warming trend

. good morning. live look there at the east bay hills and mount diablo24 degrees. >> welcome back. the flu season has reached epidemic levels in 47 states after getting off to a unusually early start. the cdc said 20 people under the age of 18 have died since the outbreak started in mid- november. the cdc doesn't track deaths in adults but states including minnesota, indiana and south carolina are reporting double digit death rates. >> generally healthy people don't die from the flu but it does happen. it's normally the elderly people, very young children,

pregnant women, people with diseases, people on certain types of drugs. >> flu vaccines are recommended for everybody six months or older. california is one of just three states without widespread flu activity but that won't be the case for long. cases have been on the rise since december and could be widespread by next week. there is still time to get a flu shot. the vaccine is closely matched to the flu strain that are in circulation and plenty of doses are available. >> police in los angeles say a woman was stabbed and another was sexually assaulted while being held hostage at a mall. the two victim was among 14 hostages held by two robbers inside a nordstrom near lax. the hostage situation ended when a swat team entered the store. police are still looking for the robbers. a judge in colorado is giving a suspected gunman in the colorado theater shooting more time before he has to give

a plea. he now has two months to decide how he wants to plea. an insanity defense is one possibility. >> we are learning more about the gun control group launched by gabreille giffords. yesterday her husband outlined the goals of their new political action committee. it includes blocking mentally ill people from getting guns and banning high capacity magazines them have raised one million dollars already. the vice president may turn to new technology to permit guns falling in to the wrong hands. >> we have a problem beyond the shootings, the columbines through the aurora to connecticut and there is 10,000 people a year gunned down in cities. >> biden met with the video game industry yesterday at the white house. his task force is expected to present recommendations to the president by next week. he is interested in technology that would keep a weapon from

being fired by anyone other than the person who bought it. while gamers favor more technology they believe it's up to individuals and families to stop gun violence. >> it's more of a parenting thing. the main thing when i grew up my parents always said make sure you know the difference between reality and fiction. >> violent crime, particularly among the young has fallen since the 90s. >> this morning police are trying to find who stabbed a man in san jose and why. police found the victim on mesa drive just before 3:00. he was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. police say the neighborhood is known for gang activity but it's not known if that stabbing is gang related. a former death row inmate who is now accused of kill canning his mother said he plans to plead guilty. he made that statement during a court appearance yesterday before his public defender asked for a delay.

the new charges police said he called them to say he killed his mother. he does have a violent past. he spent time on death row after being convicted of killing two teen girls and for raping four other women. his death sentence was set aside after the state supreme court ruled capitol punishment unconstitutional. >> a man was sentenced to 27 years for his part in the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl outside a richmond high school dance. he was 16 at the time of the crime back in 2009. he pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal to avoid a life sentence. six defendants were charged with the case. one is serving a 32 year sentence, four others are still awaiting trial. >> women rallied in the mission district calling for the community to take a stand against sexual assault.

>> no more violence. >> reporter: the ralphly after a woman said a man knocked her down on 23rd street and tried to rape her. a couple in a nearby heard her screaming and turned on their lights which scared off the attacker. demonstrator say it's a reminder of the need to get involved if you witness a crime. >> don't be afraid to go out and help your neighbor. they may be in trouble and they need your help. we need each other. >> community leaders are urging women to learn how to protect themselves. several nonprofits took part including impact bay area. >> lance armstrong will reportedly confess to oprah that he used performance enhancing drugs. a source said that he will talk to her on monday. the source said he will admit to taking drugs during his procycling career but won't go

into details about the allegations made by the anti doping agency last year. he was then stripped of his seven titles and banned for life from racing. sacramento city leaders say it's no slam dunk that the kings will move to seattle. a couple of investors are planning to bid for the team. the founder of 24 hour fitness is putting together a group as well as the head of sleep train mattress and a billion area ron burkle. there are report that a seattle group has locked up a deal to buy them. >> hostess has picked a buyer for some of its brands. they said flour foods will buy six of its bread brands, that deal valued at $390 million. they are expected to also announce buyers for its dessert cakes in the coming weeks. this morning the department of homeland security is warning people to disable their java software. the warning after hackers appeared to have found a flaw in the coding that lets

malicious software to be installed. java is widely used to write applications and other software. it's owned by oracle. >> lottery fever heating up because the winnings for the mega millions jackpot got a lot bigger. nobody matched all six numbers last night. that means tuesday night's is worth $62 million. in california only one person matched all five numbers without the mega number. the winning numbers 24, it's, 30, 34, 56 and the mega number is 1. the next drawing date is on tuesday. thousands of people are expected to rush the stores to buy tickets. >> there may be something missing from candlestick park today. packer fans. the reason many of them may be having trouble getting here for the big game. >> it's a frigid start outside the doors this morning. when i expect the numbers to rebound and what you can expect

. many people flock to the coast to see the highest tides of the year, king tides are created by swings between the earth and moon and those tides peaked on thursday putting beach area that are normally accessible to visitors under water in several locations. they also drew on lookers to southern california beaches yesterday. >> so beautiful, like in the movies. because i come from europe and we don't have ocean shore there. >> officials say beach goers should exercise caution during king tides and ba on alert for large sneaker waves. in north dakota the snow just keeps oncoming down. take a look at this video. you can see anything by that white out from the city. forecasters say as much as a foot of new snow could fall in parts of that state. snow plugs are working overtime

and the state has declared a travel warning. >> those problems in the midwest are fouling up the travel plans of cheese heads. some packer fans flying to the bay area to watch the game but because flights were canceled in parts of wisconsin some packer backers had to take a three and a half hour bus ride to chicago to catch a flight from there. >> they are flying me out and putting me up and got tickets for me to go so i will sit between a lot of 49er fans and root for the packers. >> the packers players safely in san francisco. that's because the team's chartered flight was the only plane that left the area on time yesterday. >> speaking of that, rosemary is watching the temperatures for us. i'm getting funny comments, one says it's straight up alaska and another wants to know if she has to shop for football

game snacks should she wait an hour. >> you know, an hour may do you some good but it's really not until about 9:30, 10:00 we start to feel the difference. right around sunrise, about now we feel our coldest weather and it takes us about an hour or so to start to rebound. take a look, this is what we are expecting. here we are in the 7:00 hour. widespread 30s, those pockets of white indicating upper 20s, livermore, danville, pleasanton, to the north we have a few pockets there as well in and around santa rosa, nevado you will find 30s and below subfreezing temperatures, below the 30s, upper 20s, by ten or so we are looking at low to mid40s. there is your difference and then for the lunch hour mid40s to about 50 and for the afternoon we will be mostly sunny and upper 40s, low 50s in the forecast for your afternoon. if you are going to see the niners play bring the thick coat, bring the extra blanket,

>> reporter: hi. good morning. it's cold out here. i can assure you of that this morning. just around the freezing mark and this is what folks waking up to this morning in danville. frost on the cars and in fact people who live here were telling me that they had a slight bit of moisture that moved through the area overnight and that's why you see more ice on the car this is morning but you will have to scrape off the wind shields as you leave the house. right around freezing right now but for some we talked to this is really nothing. >> i grew up in minnesota so it's not bad. >> reporter: okay. this morning we saw quite a few people out taking a morning walk, jogging this morning and obviously wearing a number of layers as they leave the house right now. very cold in this area. the same time we dropped by a popular breakfast spot in this area, side board, short time ago. we saw the folks there, they were all bundled up.

so it's cold this morning obviously. those folks in the kitchen there trying to stay warm, staying near the oven. that's the best way to do it. here very chilly temperatures, lots of frost on the cars. we will talk to people throughout the morning. we will send it back to you for now. >> thank you. temperatures across california could fall to a six year low this weekend. temperatures are expected to plunge into the 20s in the valley and that means a lot of frost which is a threat to crops and citrus farmers worried. >> we are probably two weeks the end of harvest so maybe 15 to 20% of the crop would be lost. >> farmers doing what they can using tarps and wind machines to try to protect fields, crops are damaged after eight hours of freezing temperatures. >> happening now the temperature outside candlestick park is a round 40 degrees. it's barely above freezing. of course bring heavy jackets

and blanket itself you are going to the game. it's a live picture outside the parking lot at candlestick park. looks quiet but that's going to change in the next few hours. it's about half full now but you can expect plenty of action when the main lots open at 1:00 p.m. this afternoon. fans will have four hours of tailgating before the 5:00 p.m. kickoff. you can bet fans will be wearing those foam hats. they are the local answer to the cheese heads. we met the creator. he used to make it one by one in his garage but his idea has caught on. now it's sold in team stores and produced by a line and shipped by thousands. >> it was always a goal. i wanted to be in the stadium. i wanted all the fans to wear it and be at that level with the cheese heads. they cost about $35. the 49ers o liked so much they helped bell get a deal with a

name is being withheld until his family is told. >> violence continues to march the city of oakland. there were four homicides in six hours yesterday. the victims were all men. starting at 2:30 there were deadly shootings in the fruitvale district. there was one in west oakland and inest oakland. the last homicide happened before 8:30 near 94th avenue and hillside. there are report that up to 30 shots were fired. the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. though the chp assisted there so far no reports of arrests. operation cease fire. police rounded up gang members in the bay area but coming up why one resident said the police raid didn't work. >> yesterday morning we told you about a caped crusader spotted frequently in the area and now we can show you this is

him in action. he is a 20-year-old college student. he dresses up as batman and then walks the streets a few times a week. he is not a crime fighter. he is just out to discourage people from trouble and to lift people's spirits. >> just to try to prove that anyone can be a hero, anybody can do something nice, something to benefit the community. >> well batman has quite a following. people look for him out on the streets. he also of course has his own facebook page. batman said he isn't sure how long he will do it but he wants to host charity events in the future including city clean up days. >> i hope he has a sweater. it's cold out there. let's go to rosemary with more. >> we have a few months until we get to summer but we will see a slow warm up. its going to go in to the business week.

we are dry, cool, bring along the jacket. the big story this morning is the cold. it really is freezing and subfreezing temperatures out there as well. we are seeing a lot of sunshine. it's crisp. if you have to be outside, i will show you the numbers in just a moment. the winds are light but we have seen enough wind to help steer out some of the cold air and that has actually helped cancel any advisories for this morning. no freeze or frost advisories to worry about. 30 degrees in concord. 30 in livermore but it's still very, very chilly. 34 in haywood, mid-30s oakland. 41 san francisco, low 30s in the authority bay. nevado, areas near santa rosa, so again below freezing in some cases, 30 for napa, again, i was looking at the airport and

it's reporting 27 degrees. depending on what neighborhood are you in it's cold out there. pacific satellite view, if you bear with me i will show you this pattern. notice that flow. it's a northwesterly flow we continue to see. just a slight chance for a few scattered showers, some through the delta. areas for the inland east bay. we will be mainly dry today but this is the pattern we continue to see with the trough off to the east and this ridge over the park. this ridge is going to be shifting over few days, when it does our temperatures will come up just enough. a freezing start out there, light winds in store for your afternoon. forecasted highs upper 40s, low 50s. 49 for nevado, 50 in san francisco, low 50s berkeley, oakland, haywood, san leandro, fremont, 51 for you, 53 san jose, low 50s santa cruz, beautiful start this morning,

. good morning. a live look toward bay point. a good-looking start. bring along a jacket. freezing temperatures may be to blame for a bus bursting into flames on i-5 in seattle. it appears that frozen brakes over heated during the drive yesterday. fortunately that driver pulled over on the freeway after hearing a popping noise. all 70 people on board including a woman in a wheelchair got off stayly. >> the bus went boom and like exploded. everybody in the bus screamed and sort of stood there wonder what was happening. >> traffic was backed up as firefighters fought the flames.

it happened after 1:30 in the northbound lanes of interstate 880 near the off ramp in san jose. two men were inside a chevy and it veered off the road and hit a rock. the passenger of the car was ejected and he died at the scene. the driver went to the hospital with serious injuries. two northbound lane has to be closed for a short time but the accident didn't cause any back up. investigators checking to see if alcohol was a factor in that crash. >> oakland armed robbery suspect who escape from police custody is on the loose. want so show you a picture of anthony hoskins. he broke free as he was being taken to a doctor's appointment. a sheriff's deputy was driving him from the jail to the facility and somehow he slipped out of his leg irons and waist and hand restraints. when the deputy opened the car door he took off into a neighborhood around 14th avenue at east 30th street. >> not safe at all.

that drivers had to scrape the ice off their wind shields in danville. not everyone minds the cold. >> i grew up in minnesota, so this is not bad. minnesota and iowa. it's balmy compared to what it is back there. >> that's true. minnesota's worse! temperatures across california could still hit a six-year low this weekend. and churches in the east bay are helping families find shelter in the cold temperatures. st. vincent depaul's oasis program works with contra costa county churches to house families. 30 people are currently enrolled in the program and more are on the waiting list. pets also need to keep warm. at one shelter in walnut creek, we found all the dogs wearing sweaters. animal specialists say animals should be kept indoors, especially at night in cold temperatures. i-5 has reopened after overnight icy conditions and multiple spin-outs. it was the second time in 48 hours the freeway had been closed in southern california. a 40-mile stretch of i-5 was shut down thursday north of los

taking a look. that is the place to be this afternoon. while it's been pretty quiet this morning, some fans parked in the rv lot. they are waking up and moving around, of course getting ready for tailgating. that will start at about 1:00 this afternoon. now in the next half hour, we'll talk to one fan who made the scary drive through the sierra to san francisco. inside the stadium, maintenance crews are making sure candlestick is in perfect condition for both fans and players. keeping with tradition, end zones have been painted red and security will be tight as well, with close to 70,000 fans packed into the park. police staffing levels will be similar to that of a monday night game. now, some plain clothes officers will also wear 49ers or packers gear as well. >> a little bit of ribbing and fun teasing is one thing. but anyone that's threatening or intimidating fans from either side, that will not be tolerated. >> and of course every precaution is being taken to prevent a blackout like the one in december of 2011. you see that there. pg&e has tested rebuilt elect

under investigation, but the coroner's office found no sign of foul play. today's memorial is at the casa grande high school gym in pet lumina at 10:00. the byrne family is asking everyone to wear pink, alyssa's favorite color. one person died and another is hospitalized after a one-car crash in the south bay overnight. it happened just after 1:30 this morning in the northbound lanes of interstate 880 near the brokaw road off ramp in san jose. the two men were inside a chevy. it veered off the road and smashed into a rock and the passenger of that chevy was ejected. he died at the scene. the driver went to the hospital with serious injuries. two northbound lanes were shut down for a short time, but the accident did not cause a backup. investigators are still checking to see if alcohol was a factor in that crash. new this morning, a shutdown toll booth that caused major traffic delays last week is expected to reopen on monday. officials expect the toll booth to open sometime between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

. good morning to you on this saturday. isn't that a beautiful shot, cool, quiet day in the forecast for the bay area. conservatives and watch dog groups are building up a campaign against a $50.7 billion package to help with superstorm sandy relief. they are complaining while a lot of that money will go towards recovery efforts, some of it will go to projects unrelated to that storm. the campaign comes as lawmakers are hoping to pass funding in the next few weeks. time now, 9:13. and flu season is in full force. that has many people here in the bay area trying to avoid getting sick. anna coinman joins us with more on how many states are impacted by the flu so far and why it could get worse.

anna, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, brian. the flu epidemic is twofold, driven by a stronger than normal strain and the dreaded flu season started one month early this year, in december. and in some places around the country report vaccine shortages, the silver lining is flu season may have already peaked in some places, like the south. the centers for disease control, or cdc, estimates the flu kills about 24,000 people in an average year, mostly the very old or very young, and says the majority of americans this year are seeing outbreaks in their community as a normal occurrence. flu was widespread in 47 states last week, six more than the week before. the only states according to the cdc without widespread flu were california, mississippi, and hawaii. the advice from physicians, wash your hands as often as possible. avoid touching your face. and keep your germs to yourself. don't go to work and don't let your kids go to school. boston has been hit particularly hard. the death toll from flu has now hit six, 18 in all of massachusetts. state public health officials

say the flu's early arrival and its fierce symptoms this season have been causing patients to flood emergency rooms and a rush on vaccine. this year, nearly 130 million doses of flu vaccine have been distributed and so far, at least 112 million have been used. officials say supplies are running low in some places, but vaccine is still available. and new york state governor andrew cuomo this morning, declaring a statewide public health emergency, strongly encouraging everyone to get the flu vaccine. since the swine flu epidemic in 2009, vaccination rates have increased in the u.s., but more than half of americans have yet to get the vaccine this year. back to you. >> anna, thank you so much for that report. well, police in southern california are checking surveillance cameras, as they try to identify two men who took 14 nordstrom rack employees hostage near los angeles. police say the men stabbed one of the employees and sexually assaulted another late thursday night, before escaping during a three-hour standoff with

police. a store spokeswoman says the gunmen did commit a robbery, but wouldn't say what was stolen. and a judge in colorado is giving the suspected gunman in the colorado theater masacre more time before he has to enter a plea. james holmes now has two months to decide how he wants to plead to charges that he killed 12 people and injured nearly 60 others last july. an insanity defense is one possibility. we are learning more about the gun control group launched by former congresswoman gabrielle giffords. yesterday, her husband mark kelly outlined the goals of their political action committee, including blocking mentally ill people from buying guns. the group has already raised $1 million in contributions. and vice president joe biden may turn to new technology to prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands. >> we have a problem beyond, quote, the masacres, the

brown's budget plan appears to provide enough funding to avoid an increase. brown's budget proposal includes an additional $250 million for the uc system. the amount is less than the uc requested, but probably enough to avoid an increase. meanwhile, the brentwood school district may expand a program that puts ipads in elementary schools. officials are looking at expanding the program out to all the district's fourth graders. fourth grade was selected because of larger class sizes and the ability for students to learn independently. officials will hold a meeting january 23rd at edna middle school to determine interest level. mcdonald's is trying something new with its happy meals in england. the fast food chain is pledging to distribute 15 million books instead of toys over the next two years. the program is called the happy readers initiative. the books are nonfiction and explore things like space and marine life. no word if the concept plans to spread to the u.s. starting on march 1st, the government will stop mailing social security checks.

all money is going to be transferred electronically. the treasury department says the move is to cut down costs. about 5 million americans receive social security or disability payments through the mail. but in march, everything will be through direct deposit or a treasury-issued debit card. new lending rules could make it harder for some prospective buyers to get a mortgage. new guidelines limit the percentage of a borrower's income that can be used to pay a mortgage. under the new rules, a total of a monthly mortgage payment and all other monthly debt payments cannot exceed 43% of a borrower's monthly gross income. the new guidelines are not scheduled to take effect until next year, but they may have an immediate effect on some lenders' policies. hostess has chosen a buyer for some of its most popular breads. the bankrupt bakery chain says flowers foods will now buy six of its bread brands, including wonder bread. the deal is valued at about $390 million. hostess is also expected to announce buyers for its dessert

cakes, including the iconic twinkie, in the coming weeks. this morning, the u.s. department of homeland security is warning computer users to disable their java software. the warning comes after hackers appeared to have found a flaw in java's coding that allows malicious software to be installed. java is a widely used tech natural language used to write internet applications and other software. java is owned by oracle. a recent e. coli outbreak in canada has been linked to a san francisco-based lettuce company. officials say the lettuce was distributed by fresh point, inc. to several kfc and taco bell restaurants in canada. so far, the outbreak has resulted in 26 e. coli ses in december and january. lottery fever is heating up across the nation. that's because the winnings for the mega millions jackpot just got a whole lot bigger. no one matched all six numbers in last night's drawing. that means tuesday night's drawing is worth an estimated $62 million. in california, only one person matched all five numbers, minus

saturday, january 12th. i'm claudine wong. >> i'm brian flores, in for mike mibach. many parts of the bay area experienced freezing temperatures overnight. this morning, it's still pretty cold out there. ktvu reporter alex savage has been in danville braving the weather all morning. what's it like out there this morning? >> reporter: well, now that the sun is coming up here, it's getting more comfortable. we're sort of thawing out, if you will. across the street, the rooftop of this bank here, you can still right there in the shadow see a little bit of frost remaining on this roof, but a lot of it is disappearing this morning. here in downtown danville, we've seen a number of people braving this chilly weather, out taking a nice brisk morning walk. also a number of people jogging this morning as well, with a few extra layers on, of course. and many people woke up to find their cars iced over. you had to scrape the frost off those windows, after temperatures that were below freezing in many inland areas. and i talked to a baker at a local cafe who told me the cold weather put him behind

most, if not all american forces should be up by december 2014. more than 2000 americans have died in the afghan war. the air force is preparing for stringent cutbacks if congress can't agree on a budget by march. the air force says noncritical flights will be grounded from late july through september, including air show improvements, base improvements cut back by 50% and widespread civilian furloughs will be instituted. the air force employs about 330,000 active duty service members and 143,000 civilians. the navy is looking into whether all sailors should wear flame-resistent clothing at sea. tests have shown the 50/50 cotton/nylon blend worn by most sailors will burn until completely consumed. uniforms in other branches of the military are designed to be self extinguishing. an oakland armed robbery suspect who escaped from police custody remains on the loose this morning. now, this is a picture of

anthony hoskins. he broke free from prestraints while being transported to a doctor's appointment at highland hospital. an alameda county deputy was driving him and somehow hoskins slipped out of his leg irons and hand restrains. when the officer opened the door, hoskins ran out the car door. >> it's not safe at all. there's nothing we can really do about it, but i would rather- - >> investigators did recover his jail clothing that he dumped in a backyard. they also say he has relatives in the area. hoskins is accused of more than a dozen robberies. he was also onparole for kidnapping. violence continues in the city of oakland there. were four homicides within a six-hour period yesterday. the victims were all men. you are looking at a map now of all the locations. starting at 2:30 in the afternoon there, were deadly shootings in fruitvale, near

diamond park, in west oakland, and also in east oakland. the last homicide happened before 8:30 last night near 94th avenue and hillside street. there were reports that up to 30 shots were fired. the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. several suspects were seen running from the area, but there are so far no reports of any arrests in any of the four homicides. emotions were running high in southern california last night, as hundreds of people gathered to pray for the recovery of a teen who was shot by a fellow student. people from both union high school and the community gathered at a nearby park to show their support. the teen was shot and critically injured thursday, when another student opened fire at taft union high school. doctors say the victim remains in an induced coma. meanwhile, school will be canceled again on monday, as authorities from multiple agencies continue their investigation into the school shooting. so far, authorities have not released the 16-year-old suspect's name. the county district attorney will announce on monday morning

whether formal charges will be announced against the boy. a news conference is also scheduled at the school on monday afternoon. an armed officer will patrol two schools in new york. the officers will work on a part-time basis at newark junior high school and the mcgregor alternative high school. the hiring of the officers had been in the works for months and is not related to the school shooting in newtown, connecticut. a father who posed as a school gunman to test security at his children's elementary school has been arrested in texas. police say ronald miller walked into the salinas elementary school office on thursday morning and demanded to know what the school would do if he was armed. >> he asked questions, what would you do if i had a gun, what would you do if i had a gun and i had a target inside the school? and those questions obviously would be alarming. >> officers say miller did not show a weapon, but he did reportedly tell a school greeter that he had a gun

before he explained his stunt. a school administrator said miller was combative and he was escorted off the property. he is now facing domestic terrorism charges. time now, 9:38. workers at a petaluma bar gage facility made a gruesome discovery. a man's body turned up in some recycled materials. the discovery was made yesterday afternoon. sheriffs investigators say they don't know if the man was accidental or if foul play was involved. we're told the man has been identified, but his name is is being withheld until his family is notified. a former death row inmate who is now accused of killing his own mother says he plans to plead guilty to the crime. dennis stanworth made the statement during a court appearance yesterday before his public defender asked for a one- week delay. the new charges come after police say stanworth called them to tell him he had killed his 90-year-old mother at his vallejo home. stanworth has a violent past. he spent time on death row, after being convicted of kin

two girls in 1966 and raping four women. however, his death sentence was commuted in 1972 after the state supreme court ruled capital punishment unconstitutional. he was paroled in 1990. two car washes will be held in san jose this weekend to raise money for a family killed in an apartment fire. the four died december 29th when a fire destroyed their west san jose apartment. the car washes are scheduled to be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. today and tomorrow at the agave restaurant on monterey road. family members are trying to raise the money to bury their family members in mexico. police say men pride open a lock on a front entrance, during the overnight hours. they then took mail from the mailboxes. if you have any information on this, you're asked to contact

time now, 9:46. today marks the third anniversary of one of the deadliest natural disasters in history. a powerful 7.0 earthquake rocked haiti, killing 300,000 people. the country is struggling to recover today. hundreds of thousands of people are still living in tent cities, although an estimated $16 billion were donated from around the world. the haitian people say many areas are on their own with no government assistance. >> well, immediately after the earthquake, we had more than 2 million people who needed the shelter and the house. >> more than 360,000 people are living in 500 camps. haiti has dealt a major setback when hurricane sandy hit late last year. a marin county man convicted of joining the taliban will be allowed to pray with fellow muslim inmates. john walker lindh is currently serving a 20-year sentence at a maximum facility in indiana.

the federal judge has ruled the prison must allow lindh and other muslims to hold daily group prayer. the government is considering an appeal. 19-year-old san pablo man was sentenced to 27 years in prison for his part in the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl outside a richmond high school homecoming dance.  arya abdullah morales was 16 years old at the time of the crime in 2009. he pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal to avoid a life in prison sentence. six defendants were charged in connection with the case. one is serving a 32-year prison sentence. four others are still awaiting trial. women rallied in san francisco's mission district lala night, calling for the community to take a stand against sexual assault. the rally comes after a woman reported a man knocked her to the ground last saturday night on 23rd and guerrero and tried to rape her. a couple in a nearby home heard her screams and turned on the lights, scaring off her attacker. demonstrators say the attack is
