why the cases may be connected. >> reporter: san francisco's pharmacy was hit first about 1:45 yesterday afternoon. two robbers in their 20s wearing hooded sweatshirts and scarves came in and used a gun to order the pharmacist to the

floor. he told us the two ignored the cash register and stole prescription blood pressure and nausea medications. a second robbery yielded a bigger haul. >> similar style. they both involved firearms. same number of suspects. we're looking into the possibility they might be related. >> reporter: at golden gate pharmacy a pharmacist told the suspects you're joking when they burst in and forced a customer to the floor. think the demanded oxycontin, oxycodone and percocet. they instead grabbed whatever they could. including quantitities of prescription medications. >> whenever we have two armed robberies in one day it's a big deal. >> reporter: both pharmacies have surveillance video of the suspects. no one was injured though police say it's part of a

troubling trend. >> we had one last month. there was one in south city. we're working hard to see if there's any connection. we don't want such a problem on going. >> reporter: pharmaceutical robberies are such a concern nationwide. new york police announced they plan to tag some prescription bottles with gps devices to track stolen drugs. reporting live in san francisco. >> a horrible discovery. a man's bloody body was found inside a car trunk. rita williams is in santa rosa where she's learned the name of that dead man. rita. >> reporter: frank, that car with a body stuffed in the trunk was parked across the street from sonoma state university. that's upset some students who just returned from winter break yesterday. >> i didn't know about that. so i think i'm concerned i

didn't know. >> reporter: sonoma county sheriffs investigators say it shouldn't be alarmed. >> more than likely it happened somewhere else. >> reporter: sonoma county sheriffs deputies say they spotted the car here last night. it matched a car santa rosa police say was involved in a domestic violence case friday night. they saw blood in the front seat, opened the trunk and found a man's body inside. the coroner has identified that man as sean francis parker. investigators told me parker was the suspect in that domestic violence case and that they believe at least some of the blood in the front seat belonged to the woman who was the domestic violence victim. >> we've contacted that person. we don't believe this has anything to do with the prior domestic violence case. >> reporter: investigators here

say sean parker who has an extensive criminal history did not commit suicide and they say they have what they told me were some very good leads trying to track down his killer. reporting live in santa rosa, rita williams, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we are learning more tonight about a police officer killed in the line of duty in the city of galt. authorities say 31-year-old officer kevin tahn responded to a report of a burglary this morning. the suspect fatally shot the officer before killing himself. tahn was a former military police officer. galt is a city of just about 24,000 people 20 mimes south of sacramento. tahn is believed to be the first galt police officer shot and killed in the line of duty. authorities are looking for two carjackers tonight. the man was returning to his home on truman street about

8:30 this morning when two men forced him out of his suv at gunpoint. deputies are look for a 2007 gray chevy tahoe with california license plate 5 wjn 237. >> larry esquivel plans toen continue the programs underway in the department when he takes over after the chief retires this weekend. >> really just to be that sounding board and the resource for our officers to increase morale. >> san jose city manager announced esquivel's aappointment yesterday. she needs more time to come up with a permanent replacement. oakland residents and activists are crowding the city council chambers in protest over the latest policing plan. john sasaki is there live.

>> reporter: they are facing vocal opposition from critic of a plan to bring in william bratton. they think spending $250,000 to hire former los angeles police chief and new york police commissioner william bratton is a waste of money. bratton is attractive to city officials because of the expertise. some of his past policies are considered overzealous. even unconstitutional including stop and terrific. after a deadly 2012 with 126 homicides though, city officials say something needs to be done. >> there's no proof that gang conjunctions work. there's no proof that youth curfews work. >> it's about management.

donated money to give to gun owners. organizers say they ran out of cash in just an hour. people who stayed in line had to settle for iou's. turning in the weapons helps keep them out of the wrong hands. tomorrow, president obama and vice president biden are expected to announce proposals to reduce gun violence in the response to the massacre in newtown, connecticut. the white house says the president supports a federal ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines along with background checks. the president could take steps by executive action which don't require the approval of congress. >> this cold snap has many bay area residents using their fireplaces. tomorrow it will be illegal to burn wood. pollution levels will reach unhealthy levels tomorrow and have issued the fourth winter spare the air alert of the season. our thief meteorologist is tracking the temperatures. things are warming up. >> we do not have any

a pedestrian is dead after a big rig hit her on a street. the woman had started to cross the street when she was hit about 7:00 this morning. the driver stopped. drugs and alcohol are not suspected. >> firefighters ran into some unexpected challenges today battling a house fire in oakland. news chopper 2 was overhead around 9:00 this morning as flames and smoke poured from the home. firefighters say they had trouble reaching the flames due to a large amount of personal

belongings inside thes who and a fallen power line outside the home. no one was hurt. neighbors tell us someone had just left the home. >> i seen the lady come in the house yesterday. but this morning i heard that somebody come out this morning and left. >> it took firefighters more than an hour to put out the fire. still no word tonight on what caused it. in crocket, a fire may have been deliberately set. it started right under 4:00 this morning below the pier. investigators say the fire is suspicious because they haven't found any electrical sources in the rare that could have started. >> a community meeting is scheduled to start in a few minutes from now just as three fire stations are being closed in contra costa county. fire station 16 shut its doors today. a fire station in clayton is

slashing its hours. the meeting starts in about 15 minutes at the veterans memorial building in lafayette. tonight the city of milpedis will consider reducing daily staff levels. four firefighters could be laid off if the cuts are approved. that meeting begins at 7:00. >> concord police say they've arrested a man who pretended to be selling an iphone and then robbed a potential buyer. the robber put an ad on craigslist for an iphone 5. he then met a buyer at a parking lot in concord last night where he stole the buyer's money at gunpoint. the victim calmed police. a short time later officers stopped the suspect's vehicle on interstate 780 and took them into custody. >> in san francisco city leaders joined human rights activists to mark the launch of human trafficking awareness

month. the campaign is meant to shed light on the issue of human trafficking. something mayor ed lee says affects a lot of people. >> many of our roots are from immigrant families. we understand what the problem is. and now it's a matter of getting enough people together to do something about it. >> mayor lee says he wants to provide support for human trafficking and go after predators. the campaign runs through february 12th. a midnight deadline is looming for more than a hundred boaters at a marina. new at 6, ktvu's john fowler talked to the residents and those who are asking them to leave. >> reporter: by midday most boaters had left pete's harbor. 144 boat people had called this marina home. define foot lived a14 years.
