>> reporter: developing news out of the east bay where gunfire at a busy b.a.r.t. station has left one person dead and another wounded. how the shooting has affected service. a close call for several

surfers today at ocean beach. the massive response to get them out of trouble. >> reporter: it's the 49ers against the atlanta falcons for the nfc championship and the right to play in super bowl xlvii. i will have a live report coming up from the georgia dome in atlanta. good evening, everyone. i'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne. in the east bay, a shooting at the bayfair b.a.r.t. station has left one person dead and another one injured. alley rasmus there and she's talked to witnesses and how this affecting service. >> reporter: the station is closed. it's been closed since 1:00. we've seen train after train pass through the station without stopping. there's crime scene tape on the b.a.r.t. platform and there's tape blocking just about every

entrance on the ground level. this is all because of a fatal shooting that happened around 12:30 this afternoon. it happened in the bus zone. that parked ac transit bus you are looking at, five seats next to it is where the victim of the fatal shooting was found. a 40-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. a woman was injured. she went to the hospital. her life injuries -- her injuries are not life- threatening. witnesses, including several people at a nearby taxi stand, told us they heard several shots fired, then saw a crowd of people at the bus stop disperse. >> shots. like two slowly and the others more quickly, like boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. sound like that. >> reporter: alameda county sheriffs, san leandro and b.a.r.t. police did a search of the area looking for the gunman. they called in a helicopter to continue the search overhead.

one male suspect was arrested nearby the b.a.r.t. station. police don't know what led up to the shooting at this point. they don't know if the victims were targeted or if this was random. >> we're looking into that and we're hoping if there's some useful video that we'll be able to get more information. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. investigator says the surveillance cameras mountedden on the ac transit bus were working and they are combing through the video along with video of surveillance videos at this b.a.r.t. station to try to further the information and piece together exactly what happened. jade hernandez will have an update on this story in our 10:00 news. live in san leandro, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. now to the high surf advisory in effect on this eve of the mavericks big wave surfing competition. we have live team coverage for you tonight. mark tamayo -- [inaudible]

mark's at the coast. patti is leave and we start with her. >> reporter: rescuers say these high wind advisories can attract waves. a hand full of surfers were taken away from the currents. from the air and the water, rescue crews from the coast guard and the san francisco fire department search for a group of surfers reported missing around 12:30 this afternoon. >> made contact with surf who had been in the water. >> reporter: the surfers were catching waves behind the cliff restaurant this is cell phone video shot by a surfer taking a break on the dash surfer take -- shot by a surfer taking a break.

>> we had visual on them early on. there was confusion as to whether three or four of the surfers had been successfully brought to the beach. >> reporter: with three of the surfers unaccounted for, searchers started to help others for their help. by 2:00, all the surfers missing had been accounted for. tonight all four of those riders are safe and unharm. the coast guard says while out on the water today the crews asked ocean beach surfers to head into shore for their own safety. patti lee, ktvu channel 2 news. we now go to mark toe my yay for the high wind advisory. >> our -- our buoy reports shore, you can see them around 7 to 9 feet but the surf is picking up offshore. this is a big area of high

surf. waves around 14. we'll take another look here approaching 19 feet. this is all approaching the bay area shoreline for tonight and also into monday and sunday morning. that's why we have the high surf advisory in place. so high surf advisory in plate right now it started at 10:00 a.m. lasted until 4:00 sunday afternoon. there is the chance this could be extended into parts of monday because some sizable waves are expected. now, as far as mavericks, that's the big headline for the big surf contest beginning tomorrow morning at 8:00. the waves get amplified and the waves topping easily 30 feet as we head into sunday. coming up we'll take a look at the weather conditions for mavericks and a nice forecast we're talking about here back on shore. along the san mateo county coast, organizers and surf fans are excited for the invitational. 24 athletes will take on the

huge waves. there's word a couple of big names had to pull out of the contest because of injuries. >> those things are kind of bad for the people who don't know a lot about the ocean or exactly what we're looking for in the way of surfing. >> because of the hazardous surf conditions, officials are discouraging people from going out in personal watercraft to watch the contest. the first contest, 8:00 a.m. tomorrow. and stay with us. newschopper2 will be live over the big waves during the competition, during "mornings on 2." you can watch all of this online at ktvu.com or mobile ktvu. vallejo police say they rescued an oakland woman who said she was kidnapped and forced into prostitution. investigators tell "the times herald" they were called on a report of a man brandishing a weapon at 4:30 a.m. this morning. they followed the suspect to a home on kentucky street. the victim was inside that home. she said she had been held there for several days. police arrested 31-year-old

james thomas and his girlfriend xavier laney, 20 years -- 20 years old. firefighters put out a fire in crisis park. fire official says at one point, the flames were two stories were high. no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is under investigation. new developments on the sexual assault allegation against michael crabtree. in a statement today, crabtree's attorney said his client was interviewed by san francisco police and said that "michael fully cooperated with the inspectors and will continue to do so throughout the investigation." the 25-year-old is accused of assaulting a woman at an unnamed san francisco hotel last sunday morning after the 49ers' playoff victory over the packers. >> crabtree is expected to play in tomorrow's game against the familiar cons. but today, it was time for the team to test out the georgia

dome. joe fonzi is with the 49ers as they get ready for the big nfc championship came together. >> reporter: i'm at the georgia dome right now, where it's empty with the exception of some media people and also some stadium workers putting the finishing touches on the field here. the 49ers arrived last night here in atlanta, about 11:00 east coast time and they got here late enough that there was not time for them to do anything except get into their hotel room. they did go through a walkthrough today here at the georgia dome. we figured it might be worth going out in the community, seeing some places where we might some find some -- where we might some fans. there were some fall cans' fans but we actually found 49ers' fans a little berafunds -- you abuntant -- a little more abundant. >> go, 9ers!

and nice comfortable temperatures. >> sounds good. today we learned of the deaths of two baseball hall of famers within the last hour, the st. louis cardinals announced the death of stan musial. he -- he wasn't his -- spent his entire career with the cardinals. he died at his home surrounded by family. he was 92. and ken, fans are remembering one of the game's most colorful players, baltimore orioles' manager, earl weaver. >> i didn't touch him! >> weaver was known for the jay raids. he was ejected -- tie raids. he was ejected -- tirades. he was ejected 92 times. he died earlier today on an orioles' fantasy cruise. the cause of death is not
