complete bay area news coverage starts right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00 p.m. >> good evening. hello. i am frank somerville. >> and i am julie haener. >> a former college student is facing a charge for making death threats to professors. new tonight at 6:00 p.m., ktvu's eric rasmussen is live with the e-mails instructors received. eric? >> reporter: it is unclear why they were targeted but the threats included things such as you will bleed and i am coming for you, they are all here in this complaint out of oregon. the family says he is mentally ill but the fbi is taking it

all very seriously. >> reporter: documents reveal two instructors received death threats last year from the same former student. an affidavit from an fbi agent detailed the e-mails, including one that read i own a rifle, i could easily pick you off from 800 meters as you go to work. i am coming for you. >> scary. >> reporter: they alerted police who handed the case to the fbi. agents tracked the e-mails to oregon where they say he set up a yahoo account under a fake name. he admitted sending the e-mails a search of his apartment didn't show up weapons. his father said he is mentally ill and it is a sad situation. the parents feel very bad. we are not naming the

instructors. officials said they are glad the threats weren't brushed aside. >> for the safety of us. >> what i always think of, what if you didn't take something seriously. and you had something and didn't take it seriously. i don't think we could live with that. >> reporter: he graduated from the university of oregon with a degree, he is not in custody while awaiting trial but he has been prohibited from using computers or phones with access to the internet. eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. an 8-year-old girl was wounded in a drive-by shooting. developing news now. ktvu's health and science editor john fowler is in oakland where the police chief rushed to the scene after the shots were fired. john? >> reporter: that's right. 3-1/2 hours now and still no

suspects. no motive. 2:25 p.m. this afternoon, an 8-year-old girl was near this suv in the driveway. police say gunman spraid bullets at young men who were in the area. the girl was the only one hit. an hour later an angry chief came to the scene. >> i will be coming out to these scenes more often because i am also requiring my command officers when they -- when they -- when we have these types of incidents that when we go policing this is their responsibility, be out here and show their concern and their support for this community who are, as you know, a frightening incident happened today. we are taking this very seriously. >> reporter: this is the area scene from chopper 2. the chief walked the neighborhood aspeaking with residents. he is -- speaking with

residents. the young girl was shot in the leg. it is a flesh wound. still, she is 8 years old. amber lee will have more details tonight on the 10:00 p.m. news. health and science editor john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. a judge ordered oikos university shooting suspect one goh to be transferred to napa state hospital. a judge suspended local proceedings against him. the judge ordered one goh to be taken to the mental hospital by february 11. one goh killed 7 people at oikos university in april of last year. family is devastated tonight after a crash claimed three lives, two of them young brothers. ktvu's cara liu joins us now and she spoke with the brother of one of the victims. >> reporter: that's right. lot of emotion out here. we have seen a number of people

coming by this home of the young man who was behind the wheel. >> reporter: three people killed in a wreck last night. two of them brothers, 12 and 16. the third a 21-year-old driver. >> david: huge loss. >> reporter: his brother says the family is destroyed by what happened. >> can't deny i cry all night long and this morning. but i want to be the strong pillar for my mom and dad. >> reporter: his brother set a good example for the family. >> something that i admired of him. the way he took care of kids. always there for everybody. >> reporter: investigators tell us he was driving eastbound on highway 92 when he lost control west of the exit. >> the vehicle swerved to the right, hit the guard rail on the right side of the freeway

and over turned and hit a pole. >> reporter: according to chp five people were in the car, including three brothers. two of the brothers, 12 and 16 died at the scene. the third was rushed to the hospital with major injuries. officers say an 18-year-old in the passenger seat, a cousin was wearing a seatbelt and suffered minor injuries. you can see repair crews at the scene today. officers say it doesn't appear drills and alcohol water -- drugs and alcohol was a factor. if you have information call the chp. live cara liu, ktvu channel 2 news. a house fire in san jose today sent two firefighters to the hospital and forced a family of 11 out of their home. started at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon on holly drive. two firefighters were hospitalized with minor burns

and released. a resident was treated at the scene. six adults and five children, two infants were in the home. they are getting help tonight from the red cross. chevron paid out $10 million in claims because of the fire. they said they paid 24,000 claims made by residents effected by the fire last august. the company says it is also compensate helmets, the city and the hazmat program. officials are reporting a rise in people seeking help this flu season. ktvu's robert handa tells us about the numbers and what is being done for those having trouble getting help. rob isn't. >> reporter: we are at a clinic -- robert? >> reporter: we are at a clinic and they are concerned about

people. >> reporter: she came to the clinic to get a flu shot. she usually gets one in november but put it off and paid the price. >> i had the flu too. so fever, i was in bed for two weeks. so, usually i get it around november but i waited so i got the flu. >> reporter: she is not surprised after the survey of medical facilitiesed to. >> every one -- facilities today. >> every one is up 35%. it is not all flu. there is other winter viruses and other illnesses. the volumes are up. >> wanted to make sure. >> reporter: many people can't get to a clinic so the group checks on home bound clients and provides flu kits and transportation for flu shots.

he says since his wife as multiple sclerosis fluseason has -- flu season has them worried. >> no way to take care of her if she gets sick. i don't know how i would handle that. >> we are getting lot of calls for people wanting somebody to come in. this flu is a real, real, real heavy on people that are older. >> reporter: the public health department says it will become more crucial, in california the flu season hasn't hit its peak yet. live in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. stanford hospital announced they are planning to open a cancer center. it will be located on highway 85 and loss gatoes boulevard. patients will have access to the cancer institute. it will open in 2014.

big step forward to immigration reform. new proposals that mean changes for the country. creating a path to citizen ship for the 11 million illegal immigrants in the country. people brought to the u.s. as children and farm workers would have a quicker path to citizenship. fines and penalties for employers who hire illegal immigrants. in sacramento, claf law make -- california lawmakers are backing the new proposals. >> it is healthy. a statement the federal government is acting, creating a math way for citizen ship. >> i think the election, the last election we had and the surge of latino voters and the surge of immigrant voters in general sent a clear message to washington that this has to be an issue that needs to be addressed. >> president obama is scheduled

joe fonzi, of course, is in new orleans right now, had a chance to visit with a couple of the baltimore ravens at their hotel today. what is it like down there right now, joe? >> reporter: you need two football teams to have a game and they are both in town. that means we got a look at jim harbaugh's older brother john. in addition to the guy you call the heart and soul of the baltimore ravens, ray lewis, who said that super bowl xlvii will be his final game, one way or the other. the 49ers played elite quarterbacks this year and they beat them. rodgers, breeze, brady, ryan. they will see joe flacco, that will be the challenge. joe flacco took the rave toons three playoff wins to earn their way into the super bowl. these are two teams that don't see that much of each other. last thanksgiving the first harbowl happened. joe flacco feels he is familiar

with the 49ers. >> i don't think we definitely got a sense for what kind of game this might be. so, um, i don't know if there is any carry-over but you get a sense for what kind of team this is. >> explosive offense. joe flacco can make every throw. strong quarterback and the receivers are strong. physical guys. they make all the catches. joe flacco makes all the throws. it will be a challenge for us. we played against a lot of great quarterbacks, being under coach, this guy here, he is a good quarterback as well. >> reporter: all the elements are in place. how do you like the way the super dome is lit up? never seen it look this good. feels like weave been wall to wall, tuesday means is the media days. players get asked if you are a tree, what kind of tree would you be? we will be all over that tomorrow. see you tonight at 10:00 p.m.
