to rosemary orozco. >> mostly clear. we are calm. a bit of patchy frost out there. some of us sinking into the supper 20s to low 30s. we'll talk about the slight warmup expected for the afternoon coming up. we are following developing news out of san francisco. police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened just a few hours ago. they tell us a man was shot in the city's western edition. alex savidge is live there now. what can you tell us so far? >> reporter: we are getting very limited information from police this morning. that is because it's so early on in this investigation. a sergeant that was out here confirmed a man was shot and killed. he was found right over near this corner. near the intersection of hayes and webster. an anonymous caller reported gunfire in this area around 2:00 this morning. we'll show you that video. officers were out here for most of the morning. police tell us the victim was rushed to the hospital after suffering at least one gunshot

wound. he died there from his injuries. homicide investigators searching for the shooter involved here. a sergeant told me they don't have a description on the person to put out. in just a couple minutes ago i talked to one woman who told me she heard one gunshot and saw this crime scene. >> it sounded like a gunshot and i knew somebody was dead. police know that sound. it's bad. >> reporter: so as we bring you back out here live. we are near webster and hayes. obviously this crime scene has been cleared. the streets have already opened. homicide investigators have their work cut out for them trying to track down the killer involved in this early morning shooting that left one man dead. i asked a sergeant if she had any information. she said at this point they don't know what the motive was. live this morning in san francisco alex savidge. one person was killed during an apparent gun battle in oakland.

police were called to the area of 39 avenue and quigley street around 11:00 p.m. officers say they found numerous shell casings from different guns, blood on the ground, but no victim. they checked with all the hospitals in the area to see if they had any victims. later police received a 911 call from a woman who says she heard someone in the back of her house. they search and found the gunshot victim. two helicopters were brought in yesterday because of the improved weather conditions. law enforcement personnel have checked 400 vacation homes in that area. a multistate task force is also being created to catch the former los angeles police officer. meanwhile the l.a. police chief will reopen investigation into why dorner was fired in the first place. >> i'm not doing this to

appease him i'm doing this so the community has faith in what the police department does. >> dorner claims he was let go from the force because he accused top commanders of corruption and racism. there is also new surveillance video shot last monday after dorner shot a young couple. shows a man getting out of that truck. he dumped something into the dumpster. police say that was an ammunition clip. >> one of the employees went through the trash. he came back with a clip. like a magazine full of bullets, a belt, a military belt and helmet. and he brought it to me and said where did you find it? he said he found it in the back of the dumpster. >> the man hunt has led to extra security and long lines at the mexico border crossing. he may have wanted to flee to

mexico when he tried to steal a boat in san diego. dorner is suspected of killing an irvine man and fiance. last night the team held a moment of silence before its home game against uc river side. the players wore orange jerseys with motivation on the front. >> we can't begin to tell you what it feels like to function without a part of your family here. >> wherever we are rebounding in practice she is in the back of your heads saying crash the boards. box out. i think that is what we will remember on the court a lot about her. >> a memorial is scheduled today for quan and her fiance. investigators believe dorner kicked him because he blames quan's father for his appeal. today emergency crews are

working to clear piles of snow that have trapped cars that are blocking roadways and sidewalks. the winter storm hit friday dumping three feet of snow across states from pennsylvania to maine. as cleanup efforts get under way, residents are being urged to stay home. >> please stay in your homes. we do not need you on the roads. you have a large number of emergency vehicles and it is dangerous to be on the roads. >> hundreds of thousands of people are still without power as crews work to repair down lines. they say it could be a few days before power is fully restored to all customers. bo mile span of new york long island expressway will be closed today. the highway will be shut down in both directions while crews w to clear the piles of snow off and get the cars out of there. the cars got stuck friday afternoon as the snow hit the area. some drivers were stuck in their cars until yesterday morning.

11-year-old massachusetts boy is the youngest victim of the storm. he died as a result of carbon monoxide boy sonning. he was helping his father shovel snow away from his car when he climbed inside to get out of the cold. the snow piled up against the exhaust. >> i got a good look at his face. eyes rolled back in his head. >> by the time the boy was overcome by fumes his father went into respiratory arrest. he was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital for observation. in a few hours from now bay area emergency responders will get together to try to get prepared for a natural disaster such as a catastrophic earthquake. they will all take part in a mass emergency drill.

the event is called operation rolling chaos and estimated 400 people are expected to attend. the scenario involves earthquake that severely damages the anderson dam which triggers a massive flood. the drill is aimed at training local first responders and students studying to become emergency workers. house fire sent a woman to the hospital. the fire started around 6:30 last night in the back bedroom of a home on bancroft avenue. one person was inside when the flames broke out. that person got outside on her own but then taken to the hospital as a precaution. firefighters say she will have to find a new place to live. >> the resident will not be able to go back in. it started in the rear and went to the attic. >> red cross was on scene and fire investigator. it does not appear to be suspicious. firefighters responded to a fire at a homeless encampment.

good morning, sunshine. mostly clear, calm, and cold outside our doors this morning. in new orleans four people were sent to the hospital after bullets started flying at a mardi gras celebration. just before 9:30 last night. one man is in critical condition while another man and two women are in stable condition. police say they believe the shooting stemmed from some kind of fight and they released this video which shows an argument between one of the victims and another man. authorities are not saying if any arrests have been made.

hours before the violent thousands of mardi gras partyers celebrating along the parade routes. one of the biggest parades rolled down canal street. the parade is part of the festivities leading up to fat tuesday which is on february 12th this year. the day before ash wednesday. new orleans super dome has passed its first major test since the super bowl power outage. last night the mardi gras ball was held. featuring events from kelly clarkson. attendees said they were not worried about the lights going out again since the super bowl outage. the stadium electric provider has faced strong criticism. the next chapter in the barry bonds steroid investigation will play out on wednesday. he is asking an appeals court to overturn their decision.

three members from the ninth circuit court of appeals will hear his case. news cameras are being allowed into the proceedings. new details about a hazing. according to the vallejo times hearld the students who said they were hazed have been offered counseling by the school. and the school's principal met with the coaching staff on how to avoid future incidents. last month the coach was fired and five students were expelled. firefighters say a barbecue is to blame for a house fire in san pablo. fire official shot this video as firefighters battled the smoke there. it started at 4:00 yesterday afternoon. two people who live inside the home got out safely. firefighters say it started because a barbecue was too close to the garage. >> started the barbecue with the garage door open.

>> and i'm claudine wong. that deadly shooting was in the city's western edition and ktvu alex savidge is live there now with more on the investigation under way. alex. >> reporter: good morning. police out here at the scene that i talked with couldn't really tell me much about what led up to the deadly shooting. sergeant did confirm to me it was a man and he was found shot and later died here. he was found right here on the sidewalk across the street from us. we're at the intersection of hayes and webster. an anonymous caller reported gunfire. police tell us the victim is a hispanic man. he was rushed to the hospital and died there later from his injuries. investigators spent the morning out here they had the street shut down as they collected evidence at this crime scene. homicide detectives obviously right now working to track down the shooter. and i talked this morning with a woman who told me she heard one gunshot this morning and saw the victim being treated.

>> it sounded like a gunshot. and i knew somebody was dead. you know that sound. the police know that sound. it's bad. >> reporter: at this point san francisco police aren't putting out any sort of description on the shooter they are look for. the person they are trying to track down. we are hoping to get more information working to get more information from san francisco police as we move throughout the day. as i was told by some of the officers out here at the scene, it is still very early on in this investigation and that is why the information coming out is very limited. live this morning in san francisco, alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. cleanup efforts under way after the deadly blizzard that swept across the northeast. at least nine people have been killed and-ups of thousands are -- and hundredsover thousands are -- hundreds of thousands are without power. anna. >> reporter: you got it, mike.

we are in mil ford, connecticut. 38 inches of snow on the ground here. a lot of folks remembering the blizzard of 1978. and some residents i talked to said this is even worse. i'm giving you perspective of how much snow is on the ground. you saw the post office box here. the postal service did have to suspend sending out the mail yesterday. also boston public transportation is at a standstill. they are hoping to get things back up and running tomorrow. things are just really worse here in the new england states. governor dan is asking residents to be very cautious about carbon monoxide poisoning as 345,000 in the region are without power and using generators. one of the deaths you mentioned was an 11-year-old boy in boston who died of carbon monoxide poisoning inside a car while his father was digging out snow. the travel bans have been lifted in connecticut and

massachusetts. the governors are still warning people to stay off the roadways. new york was hit hard as well. long island expressway 150 cars were stranded there and emergency crews were going car to car to try to rescue folks. and now they've got up state new york resources road graders coming in to remove the snow. and they have traffic that is closed off. portions of the lie today until 5:00. so that is a bit debill stating today. governor is giving resources to connecticut and massachusetts because they did indeed get hit harder. mike, i can tell you as you probably would have guessed a lot of the school systems have decided to cancel classes tomorrow which will be tough on the parents who are supposed to be heading back into work but the kids will be enjoying the white fluffy stuff because it is gorgeous. >> anna giving us that live update. we appreciate your report. travelers are getting relief today after the massive snowstorm in the northeast

canceled more than 6,000 flights. since early this morning airports across new york and boston began opening runways and resuming operations. even with flights resuming airlines are still advising customers to call the departure times before head. most airlines are also canceling for any passengers changing flights. things are a running a bit smoother for people in the bay area. sfo is reporting no ground delays or cancellations. oakland had two jet blue cancellations last night but nothing for today. san jose airport is also not reporting any canceled flights. san francisco police are investigating a crash that killed a bicyclist near at & t ballpark. it happened just before 9:30 yesterday morning. 48-year-old dianne was riding her bike near third and king streets when she was hit by a cement construct. the crash happened in front of thousands of giants fans that were head into the ballpark for fan fest. >> we need to go into the fan fest down the street.

all i hear is a big boom. i see her laying down. >> police say two nurses who were nearby tried to help her but she later died at the hospital. the cement truck driver stayed there at the scene and is cooperating with police. fatal crash on interstate 880 is being investigated. it happened near the carson boulevard exit at about 1:15 yesterday the highway patrol says a 23-year-old man from hayward died after his car hit the center divide and a few other cars right before it started rolling several times. another man was rushed to the hospital. his condition has not been released. a new team of searchers is looking for accused killer christopher dorner. 50 law enforcement personnel were brought in to relieve the officers who searched for him over the past few days in big bear. so far there are no signs of a former los angeles police officer. now investigators think he may be trying to flee to mexico. the the los angeles police department says it's trying to make amends to the two women

mistakenly shot by officers. they mistook them for dorner. her daughter wasn't seriously hurt. the l.a. police chief apologized the family yesterday. so far there is no word if the man hunt for christopher dorner will effect the grammy awards. they say lapd officers typically work the event and will be present tonight in uniform as well as in plain clothes. meanwhile the biggest stars in music are preparing for tonight's show. yesterday sir elton john spent the day rehearsing with taylor swift as well as the bands mum ford and sons. swift who is up for three grammy's record of the year is opening the show. something she says might make the night a little easier.

big chill. mostly clear, calm, patchy frost and temperatures sinking to below freezing in some cases. we will begin to watch them creep just a little bit in the next couple of hours. i've got the numbers for you coming up. we are on the scene of an over night news from san francisco. right now police are investigating a deadly shooting in the city's western edition. ktvu alex savidge is there talking to witnesses about what they heard. alex. >> reporter: good morning. at this point the shooting remains unclear. this is a shooting that left one man dead. a sergeant told me he was shot and he was found right there on that portion of sidewalk across the street from us here. we're at the intersection of haze and webster. an anonymous caller reported gunfire in this area around 2:00 in the morning. they found a man with one gunshot wound. the victim is a hispanic man. he was rushed to the hospital but died later from his

injuries. investigators spent the morning collecting evidence from this scene. homicide detectives working to track down the shooter. i talked this morning with ament who who told me she heard one gunshot early this morning. and then saw this crime scene. >> it sounded like a gunshot. and i knew somebody was dead. you know that sound. police know that sound. it's bad. >> reporter: at this point san francisco police are not putting out any description on the shooter they are looking for in this case. we have reached out to the department spokesperson this morning. hoping to get an update on the investigation. we have not yet heard back. we are hoping for further updates as we move throughout the day. live this morning in san francisco alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. one person was killed during an apparent gun battle in oakland. police were called to the area of 39th avenue and quigley street around 11:00 p.m.. they say they found numerous shell casings from different guns blood on the ground but no victim.

officers checked with all the officers in the area to see if anyone sought treatment. a short time later a neighbor reportedly heard a noise from the back of her house. police went to check it out that is when they found a person who had been shot in the leg and several times in the chest. he was pronounced dead at the scene. so far no arrests have been made in the case. at least nine people are dead after a massive blizzard that swept across nine north eastern states. officials say at least three feet of snow covered cities through pennsylvania to maine in new jersey hundreds of people were trapped in their cars when that snow suddenly hit. some did have to wait for hours for rescue crews to reach them. >> so you were out there all night? >> all night. from 10:00 to all night. >> what were you doing? staying in your car? >> trying to stay warm. >> crews are now working to clear piles of plowed snow from sidewalks and roads and people are still being urged to stay in their homes and try to stay out of the way. a 30-mile span of new york long island expressway will be closed today. that major highway will be shut

down in both directions while officials work to clear piles of snow. cars began getting stuck there on friday afternoon after the blizzard hit the area and with plows some drivers were stuck in their car until yesterday morning. 11-year-old massachusetts boy is youngest victim of the deadly snowstorm. the boy died yesterday as a result of poison monoxide poisoning. he was helping his dad shoveling know away from the car when he went into the car. the boy was pulled from the car and pronounced dead at the hospital. >> i got a good look at his face. eyes roll back in his head. i've seen that look before. >> firefighters say around the time the boy was overcome by the fumes, his father went into respiratory arrest. he was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital for observation. just a few hours from now

bay area emergency responders will train for a natural disaster such as a catastrophic earthquake. police and firefighters will take part in a mass emergency drill along fremont parkway. the event is called operation rolling chaos. estimated 400 to 500 people are expected to attend. the scenario involves an earthquake that severely damages the anderson dam in santa clara county which triggers a massive flood. the drill is aimed at training first responders. the cause of a house fire in oakland that sent one woman to the hospital is still under investigation this morning. that fire started around 6:30 last night in the back bedroom of the home on bancroft avenue. one person was in the house when it started but she made it outside. they had to take her to the hospital just as a precaution. she wasn't hurt. she is however not going to be able to return to that home. >> the resident will not be

able to go back in. it started in the rear and ran to the attic. >> the red cross was called in but residents did not need them to provide housing. fire investigator is working to determine the cause of the fire. so far it doesn't appear to be suspicious. firefighters put out a fire in a homeless encampment. that starletted just before 2:- - that started just before 2:30 this morning. no one was hurt. good morning, to you. a beautiful view there across the bay. the bay bridge. no trouble getting across that bridge this morning. the winds are light. no fog to speak of. we are waking up with a little bit of patchy frost. it is chilly out there but the sun is up and shining bright. as we get into the next hour the temperatures will rebound. a look at the calm conditions. oakland reporting five miles an

police chief charlie beck told a local affiliate here what prompted his decision and here's a portion of that interview. >> i'm not doing this to appease him. i'm doing this so that the community has faith in what the police department does. and i'm going to make a rigorous inspection to either validate or refute his claims. and we will make those inspections public. >> reporter: dorner blames numerous people inspect department for his firing back in 2008. according to police in his online manifesto and seeking revenge for what he saw unfaired treatment when me turned in a fellow officer. dorner was fired for giving false statements. he is a highly trained individual serve both in department and reserve. he also has flight training which has now prompted the department of homeland security to warn airport owners and flight crews to be on alert.

>> before we let you go. what is the latest on the investigation? >> reporter: well, right now police are saying it's almost as if dorner has vanished. however they did say in his burned out truck they found in big bear investigators did find weapons inside. and irvine police did execute a search warrant on a storage locker that belonged to dorner. we do know items were removed. according to authorities we don't know what they were. law enforcement in arizona, nevada, california, and northern mexico are in on this man hunt. the u.s. border control is on alert status. one big concern for tonight he is here in downtown los angeles. being held not too far from where we are. there is a heightenedceps of security here tonight. lapd very worried because they as you know are the targets. >> that is right. the hunt for christopher dorner continues on this sunday

happy sunday to you all. following a chilly start you can expect a minor warmup for you sunday afternoon. in new orleans four people were sent to the hospital after gunfire erupted at a mardi gras celebration. it happened just before 9:30 last night. one man is in critical condition while another man and two women are in stable condition. police say they believe the shooting stemmed from some kind of fight. they released this video showing an argument between one of the victims and another man. authorities are not saying if any arrests have been made. hours before the violence thousands of mardi gras partyers were celebrating along the parade route. one of the biggest mardi gras parades rolls down canal street. it's part of the festivities leading up to fat tuesday which

is february 12th this year the day before ash. the lights stayed on for the big event at the new orleans super dome. last night the mardi gras ball was held at the dome. that featured performances by kelly clarkson. attendees say they were not worried about the lights going out again. that outage did lead to strong criticism of the electricity provider. new this morning the family of the late penn state football coach joe paterno just released a report into the child abuse sex scandal. the paterno family commissioned the report. it challenges the commission by former fbi director luis free that he hid findings. the findings of the free report last july were inaccurate, unfounded, and unsupported by the facts. the new report claims paterno

resuming operations. airline is urging people to call ahead and check their flight status before heading off to the airport. most airlines are canceling fees. four passengers had to change their flight because of the storm. things are getting back to normal after a few cancellations here at bay area airports. sfo is reporting no ground delays or cancellations. oakland had two jet blue cancellations l.a. night. but nothing for today. san jose international also not reporting any canceled flights. san francisco police are investigating the crash that killed a bicyclist near at & t park. it happened around 9:30 yesterday morning. 48-year-old dianne sullivan was riding her bike near third and king streets when she was hit by a cement truck. that crash happened in front of thousands of giants fans that were head into the stadium for fan fest. >> we were going into the fan fest. all i hear is a big boom. i see her laying down. >> police say two nurses who were nearby tried to help sullivan but she later died at

the hospital. the cement driver stayed at the scene and cooperating with police. fatal crash on interstate 880 is being investigated. it happened around 1:15 yesterday afternoon. the highway patrol says a 23- year-old man from hayward died after his car hit the center divide and a few cars before rolling several times. another man was rushed to the hospital. his condition has not been released. we continue our coverage on the search for accused killer christopher dorner. 50 law enforcement personnel were brought in to relieve the officers who searched for him over the past few days. so far there are no signs of the former los angeles police officer. some investigators say or think he may have possibly fled to mexico. security has been increased at the border crossing. los angeles police department says they are trying to make amends to the two women mistakenly shot by police. they mistack took the woman who were delivering newspapers in a truck to dorner.

dumping three feet of snow across states from pennsylvania to maine. as cleanup efforts get underway, residents are being urged to stay home. >> please stay in your homes. we do not need you on the roads. you have a large number of emergency vehicles and it's dangerous to be on the roads. >> hundreds of thousands of people are still without power as crews work to repair downed lines. it could be a few days before power is fully restored to all customers. a 30-mile span of new york's long island expressway will be closed today. the highway will be shut down in both directions while crews work to clear piles of snow. cars began getting stuck friday afternoon as the blizzard hit the area and with snow banks blocking most of the exit, some drivers were stuck in their cars until yesterday morning. an 11-year-old massachusetts boy is the youngest victim of the deadly snowstorm. boston firefighters say the boy died yesterday from carbon

monoxide poisoning. they say he was helping his dad shovel snow away from their car when he climbed inside the running vehicle to stay warm. some of the snow had piled up against the exhaust pipe filling the car with fumes. the boy was pulled from the car but was pronounced dead at the hospital. >> i got a good look at his face. eyes were rolled back in his head. i'd seen that look before. >> firefighters say around the time the boy was over come by fumes, his father went into respiratory arrest. he was treated at the scene and then taken to the hospital for observation. manhunt for fugitive christopher dorner is entering its fourth day today in the area around big bear lake. a new shift of officers has taken over that search. two helicopters were brought in yesterday to cover more territory. law enforcement personnel have checked out about 400 vacation homes in the area. a multistate task force is being created to catch the former los angeles police officer.

the los angeles police chief says he will reopen an investigation into why christopher dorner was fired in the first place. >> i'm not doing that to apiece him. i'm doing this so that the community has faith in what the police department does. >> christopher dorner claims he was let go from the force because he accused top commanders of corruption and racism. there is new surveillance video from last monday showing the man police believe was dorner get out of that truck. this was a day after he fate fatally allegedly shot a young couple. he dumped something in that dumpster. police say it was an ammunition clip. >> one of the employees went to throw the trash out. he came back with a clip like a magazine full of bullets, a belt, a military belt, and a helmet. and he brought it to me and said, where did you find it? in the back of the dumpster. >> the manhunt has led to extra

security and long lines at the mexico border crossing. authorities say they believe christopher dorner may have wanted to flee to mexico. he allegedly tried to steal a boat in san diego wednesday night. it was exactly a week ago when the shooting rampage began. christopher dorner is suspected of killing an irvine man and his fiancee. last night the team held a moment of silence before its home game against uc riverside. the players wore orange jerseys with the word motivation on the front to honor coach mo. >> i can't begin to tell you of what it feels like to function without a part of your family here. >> whenever we're rebounding in practice, she's in the back of your head saying, across the boards. i think that's probably what we'll remember on the court a lot about her. >> a memorial is scheduled today for qwan and her fiancee. investigators say they believe

christopher dorner killed them because he blames qwan's father for an unsuccessful appeal to get his job back. one person was killed during an apparent gun battle in oakland. police were called to the area of 39th avenue and quigley street around 11:00 p.m. officers found numerous shell casings from different guns and blood on the ground, but no victim. they checked with all the hospitals in the area to see if anyone had sought treatment. then a shore time later a neighbor reported hearing a noise from the back of her house. police went to look and found a person shot in the leg and several times in the chest. he was pronounced dead at the scene. no arrests have been made so far. san francisco police are searching for the gun aman in a fatal shooting. the sound of gunshot was first reported just after 2:00 a.m., in the area of hays and webster streets. police have not released much information about the victim except that he was a hispanic male. a motive has not been released.

the cause of a house fire in oakland that sent one woman to hadn't is under investigation. the fire started around 6:30 last night in the back bedroom of a home on bancroft avenue. one person in the house was there when it began. that person did get outside safely. they say she was taken to the hospital as a precaution but was not injured. >> the residents will not be abe to go back in here. it started in the rear and ran the attic. >> red crofers called in to help. residents say they do have another place to live. the fire investigator is working to determine the cause of that fire. it does not appear to be suspicious. firefighters responded to a fire at homeless encampment in san jose overnight. it started just before 2:30 a.m., right next to a post office on tully road. no one was hurt. new details on a hazing

scandal at st. patrick's st. vincent high school in vallejo. students who said they were hazed have been offered counseling by the school. the school's principal met with the coaching staff to talk about thousand avoid future incidents. last month the head football coach was fired and five players were expelled. . the sonoma county sheriff's office is looking for the residents of a home where hundreds of marijuana plants were found. the fire was reported yesterday morning. firefighters found the doors and windows boarded up and had to cut a hole in the garage door to get inside and get to the fire. once inside they found a grow operation in nearly every room on the first and second floors. they say the residents had tampered with the pg&e meter and were illegally drawing electricity. . starting with a view of concord for you, mostly blue skies, chilly start out there.

victims and another man. authorities are not saying if any arrests have been made. hours before the violence, thousands of mardi gras partiers were celebrating along the parade route. one of the biggest mardi gras paw rays rolled down canal street. that leads up to fat tuesday, february 12-rbgs the day before ash wednesday. the family of the late penn state football coach joe paterno has just released a report into the child abuse sex scandal. the family commissioned this report. it challenges the conclusion by former f.b.i. director louie free that paterno conspired to hide sex abuse allegations against jerry is not dus key. the report says the prior report was inaccurate, unfounded and unsupported by the facts. the new report claims paterno followed school protocol and reported the allegations to his superiors. the next chapter in the

barry bonds steroid investigation will play out wednesday. the former slugger is asking an appeals court overturn his conviction on a felony charge for obstruction of justice. the court will hear the case. in 2011 bonds was found guilty of providing an evasive answer to the grand jury investigation alleged steroid use. news cameras are being allowed into wednesday's proceedings. the lights stayed on for the first big event at the new orleans superdome since the super bowl. hard to forget this moment of that big game when let'ss went out and stayed out for about a half-hour. the outage led to strong criticism of the stadium's electricity provider. there was not a repeat performance during last night's mardi gras ball. that featured floats and a performance by kelly clarkson. . a bay area lawmaker wants to reestablish a special license plate for veterans.

. bay area emergency responders are preparing for a day they pray will never come. a large disaster drill is scheduled to start later this morning. we're live in fremont with the exercise being called, operation rolling chaos. >> reporter: good morning. this exercise is first

responder training exercise well underway here. we're at uni tech education in fremont. this is disaster training program for police officers, firefighters, and military personnel. you can see right now, this is the mock demonstration they've set up here. the scenario that's been put in place is what would happen if anderson dam near morgan hill were to burst at some point. it would send a huge wall of water 35 feet high into some of the surrounding areas and obviously you can see the result would be a lot of cars turned over, a lot of people severely injured. at this point i want to bring in nav # bowa, president of unitech. what is the goal here? >> the goal is to improve coordinations between agencies, lots of different agencies, when you have a very large scale casualty incident. in this particular scenario, we have hundreds of people injured, some critically.

what typically happens is you ever the fire and police folks that come in and get overwhelmed. escalation takes time. that time is costing lives. we're trying to improve coordination between the army reserve between the national guard, the local folks, the police, fire, ems. so we have a command center set up where awferl these agencies are coordinateing, decideing who will do what. so that we can really accelerate the process of taking care of the injured. the triage process is being accelerated through this exercise. >> it's all about boosting and improving communication between the agencies when huge disaster like this happens. >> and response time. accelerate the response time because in this kind of disaster, there's going to be a lot of critical injuries, a lot of people will die if you don't get them to the hospital and stabilize them within the first hour. that first hour is critical.

cancellations last night but so far nothing today. san jose international is also not reporting any cancelled flights. san francisco police are trying to figure out what led up to a crash that killed a bicyclist near at&t park around 9:30 yesterday morning. police say 48-year-old diane sullivan was riding her bike near third and king streets when she was hit by a seem truck that. crash happened in front of thousands of giants fans who were heading into the stadium for fan fest. . >> i heard a big boom. i see her laying down. >> police say two nurses who were nearby rushed to help sullivan but she later died at the hospital. the cement truck driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police. a fatal crash on 80 in richmond is also under investigation. it happened near the karlson boulevard exit yesterday afternoon. the highway patrol says a 23-year-old man from hayward died after his car hit the

what first responders are preparing for today. we're here at unitech education, a company that trains first responders in fremont. you can see the scene here. you see overturned cars. if you look down here, you can see some first responders obviously treating a person who under this scenario, it this mock scenario, would be an injured person. essentially with you they're working on here is the idea that dam has burst in the south bay, anderson dam in morgan hill. a huge wall of water has come over the surrounding communities and wiped out cars and injured several hundred people. and the idea is to give first responders, police, firefighters and military personnel, the training they need to be able to communicate and work together in large scale disaster. i want to bring in captain brian clark with the army national guard. why is this training so important? >> it's basically great to get our medics to work with the local fire and ems medics.

we have a couple different ways of together things. mortgage we can come together on training like this, the smoother flow in a real disaster. >> why is it so important to have such a realistic scenario? we're seeing people with missing arms. they're using real blood out here. that's really important. >> definitely. our motto is train like you fight. so if we bring them out here to do medical training, we want it to look at real as possible so they're not shocked in a real event. we want it to look real and graph aik imriews only because as medics that what you will roll up on. >> what are the biggest challengings that you want to try to tackle today with this training? >> basically, we want to work through anything that we find to be a problem today. we can go back, talk on it, work it through, kind of bring it up our chain and tell our leaders, we might need to work on this or need more time with this, just see what the kinks are and try to work them out and get them
