a man on the run from san jose police overnight is killed when he crashes into a ravine. we'll tell you what police say he did to trigger this pursuit. a tragedy in country music. the death of a troubled star. >> reporter: hundreds of street lights that have been dark for years will soon be turned back in. we're live in san jose. we'll explain why. new details coming out about the olympic track star charged with murder. it involves deadly gunfire and a bathroom door. well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's monday, february 18th, presidents' day. we begin with developing news. a deadly chase in san jose. police say one person was killed after crashing a stolen car while trying to escape from police. ktvu's alex savidge is in south san jose with new video of the crash scene. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, good morning. police say this all started when the driver of that stolen suv tried to run over a police officer overnight. now, the investigation into the crash is all wrapped up here. this is blossom hill road where we are. a short distance up the road, near 101, is where this pursuit overnight came to a deadly end. we'll tell you what things looked like a short time ago as the tow truck pulled this suv, this smashed suv out of the ravine, where it crashed. the 20-year-old driver was killed after he was thrown out of the suv in the accident. there were also two teenaged girls in the car.

neither of them were seriously hurt. the pursuit began about 11:00 last night. it was near capital expressway and towers lane. a lieutenant says the driver of the suv tried to hit a san jose police officer involved in an unrelated traffic stop on the side of the road. the suv came speeding to the officer with the lights out. >> as he came closer, he flashed his light on and knew that he was intentionally drying the vehicle towards him. he jumped up on the hood to avoid being hit. the suspect continued on capital expressway. >> reporter: that lieutenant says it's unclear why that driver apparently was targeting the officer in the first place with his suv. investigators will run toxicology tests. his name is not being released. the two passengers in the suv

were 16 and 17-year-old girls. police say one of those girls had been reported as a runaway, reported missing by her parents. live this morning in san jose, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:02. the monterey sheriff's department is looking for a castroville man and a missing 10-month-old boy. investigators say they were call to a home in castro ville on reported child abuse. jesus espinoza, the suspect, was not there. the baby was missing. there are report esmay be headed to mexico -- reports he may be headed to mexico. street lights that have been turned off have been turned back on. janine de la vega is live to talk about why the street lights were turned off for years. >> reporter: all of the lights are off right now, dave, because it's light out.

but earlier this morning when it was dark, we counted here on bascom avenue that nine street lights were out. some could have been turned off but some were turned off purposely. that will strange soon. back in 2008 and 2009, the city of san jose decided to turn off 900 street lights throughout the day. there were some on roads and also in residential neighborhoods. the decision was made because of the budget. the city just reviewed their budget report and in that, it was decided that turning the lights on should be a priority. $44,000 has been set aside for the equipment and the maintenance of the lights. some residents had no idea the streets were darked on purpose. they reacted to the news this morning. >> they put the money to light up everything, it's good. it's good for people's safety. >> reporter: starting in march, approximately 225 street lights

will be turned on each month which should improve public safety as well as the appearance of the roads. it's unknown which streets will city wants residents to be patient. coming up in the next hour of "mornings on 2," hear from a woman who said she was forced to be in the dark early in the morning while she waited to get to work. we'll explain -- coming up. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:05. oakland police investigating two weekend homicides. police say a 22-year-old man was stabbed to death following an argument on saturday. it happened at an apartment on east 11th street. a $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. now, in a separate incident another man was shot and killed on 8th street in west oakland. that happened about 5:00 on saturday night. no word of motive. no arrests have been made. sacramento county sheriff's deputies say a robbery attempt that ended with a robber being shot could turn out to be a

case of justifiable homicide. a worker at the store on folsom road said the robber walked in and he could see the man had a gun. the suspect walked toward the back office of the store where a second worker was. that worker shot and killed the robber. investigators say both workers were cooperative when they were questioned. >> he may have been looking for cash. he may may have been looking for phones, electronic equipment, rather. he clearly chose the wrong business to target for a robbery. >> no one else was in the store at the time. deputies are trying to find out if there's a surveillance video of what happened. that very same store was robbed last october. investigators say that may be why the store employees were armed. 7:06. new this morning, caltrans is preparing to spend $9 million to encourage people to ride trains. that's according to the san francisco "chronicle." the paper says caltrans will spend money on a three-year ad

on the capital corridor that runs between san jose and auburn in placer county. 7:0. let's go baing to sal. you are still watching the toll plaza. >> we are watching the toll plaza. we also had a report of a car fire nearby on 980 at 24. we didn't find it. it probably was there and it's not causing any slow traffic. let's go to the toll plaza and look at the traffic here. even when things happen on a day like today, most likely it's not gonna cause a big traffic jam. what i do have to warn you about, keep your speeds down. i know the roads are open. but the police and chp are not taking the day off. you don't want a ticket. keep it safe and slow. this is 880 northbound. the traffic is moving along pretty well. the morning commute is fine on. nimitz freeway between hayward and fremont. that trip usually takes 15 minutes it's taking about the normal amount of time. let's go to steve. thank you, sal.

a cooler pattern starts today. nice, nice sunday. but already the low clouds being pushed in by a system. it has more cold air. i think .25 to .50 will probably cover this. system is coming right out of the gulf of alaska. there's not much behind it. it may be one of those one and donees again there's a come -- done -- dones again. there's much, much colder air coming in here tomorrow. .25 to .50. some locations .10. 54 in san francisco. santa cruz which was 74 on saturday, 64 on sunday will be 56 today. already a lot of low clouds up and down the coast all the way down to southern california which is really socked in.

there's our system. there's not a lot to it. but the cold air means a change in the weather pattern in a big way. starts today, a little cooler and much colder, tuesday into wednesday and a slow recovery. low clouds fog, sun. temperatures will be cooler today. already some 50s here on the high side or very low 60s. i think it will take a while to recover back in the 60s. tuesday and wednesday will be very cold. some low 50s. a cold rain, possibility of thundershowers on tuesday. really cold lows into wednesday and thursday. and then partly cloudy, opinion, a cool, breezy pattern into the weekend. the crew of a golden gate ferry that crashed into another vote saturday afternoon. they've been placed on leave. the ferry collided with a 22- foot motorboat as it left sausalito injuring at least two people. it's not clear which boat they were on. the ferry group will undergo drug testing as that investigation goes on. 7:09. we are are getting more information about the fire on

the carnival cruise ship triumph. yesterday, the u.s. coast guard said the fire started in front of a generator in the main engine crime. that fire left the cruise liner without power for five days with 4200 people on board. investigators say it could take up to a year to determine what exactly caused the fire. despite that initial report from the coast guard, congress says it still wants answers into the cruise ship disaster. hours after the triumph was towed to alabama, senator jay rockefeller september a letter to the -- sent a letter to the coast guard, demanding a review of the incident and similar incidents in the last six years. the senator says there might be a larger safety issue that needs to be reviewed involving large passenger vehicles. and when congress returns next week, they will only have four days for the sequester.

foam to try and control the flames. within the past 30 minutes we learned that two diesel tanks are filled with not ammonia but calcium nitrate. they say that chemical is less reactive but still dangerous. a state lawmaker says the state may be pushing too hard to recover money from feel who start wildfires. the sacramento "bee" reports for the past eight years, california has aggressively pursued individuals and businesses who start fires. that money is used to cover the costs of fighting the fires. now the governor wants to double the staff to cover this program. governor brown anegotiating skills could be testing -- brown's negotiating skills could be tested this summer with some public unions who backed his tax increase last year. several experts say that could

would not affect hunting and sporting weapons. her bill would ban 167 specific firearms designed for military and law enforcement use. it would also ban ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. a family in illinois is in shock. their teenagedder -- daughter was -- teenaged daughter was gunned down following a rally held for president obama. she was shot to death hours after her younger sister attended the speech on friday. during an emotional interview, her mother broke down in tears. >> every think about the way my child died, it's hard to -- she didn't deserve this. she did not deserve this. >> police say the teenager was visiting family in north chicago when she was shot and killed in an alley. a memorial has been set up in the spot where she was killed. 7:17.

a southern california woman says she never knew her father who died a hero during world war ii. but she's now the proud owner of his long-lost medals, including a silver star and a purple heart. that's all because of a west hollywood apartment manager who was the landlord of the woman's mother during the 1960s. he made an incredible discovery while cleaning out some lockers in the apartment's laundry room. >> the fifth one i opened had medals and staring me in the face was a purple heart. >> today it means today we're honoring his memory. [ applause ] >> her dad died before she was born. the apartment manager found her

♪ country singer mindy mccready is known for her hit "guys do it all the time" and "10,000 angels." she died in her arkansas home yesterday. authorities say the 37-year-old singer shot herself and her dog on the porch of her home. her boyfriend committed suicide on that same spot one month ago. mccready struggled for years with alcohol and drugs after becoming a star at 18. she recently checked into court- ordered rehab and had given up her two young sons to foster care. the family of a young girl who died in an apartment fire is asking for help with funeral expenses. it happened early saturday morning at the family's home on mariner drive on treasure island. brian flores is live with more reaction from the young

victim's mother. >> reporter: no question a tragedy. the 10-year-old would have been spending time with her family this morning on this presidents' day holiday. instead, the family is planning a funeral. behind me is the apartment complex off treasure island. family members and investigators are left searching for answers as to how this happened. the 10-year-old died while trying to escape a burning apartment complex that caught up in fire. five members of the fire escaped. they could not reach the girl because the second floor collapsed. the memorial grows and the family is just left distraught. >> i got the kids out. didn't know she was the only one still upstairs. now as a parent, i feel bad that i wasn't able to go back in there and get her because they wouldn't let me back in. >> how about we not think about

what happened and blame anybody? how about we be grateful and thankful. >> reporter: a lot of people in this community on treasure island coming together for the family and leaving teddy bears and candles. her teachers came to the vigil. they say she was a bright teacher. her family says is she's left ten siblings behind and there's financial distress trying to plan her funeral. they will set up a fund to help with this. as soon as we have more on that and the investigation on the fire, we'll pass it along. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. hundreds of people expected to attend tomorrow night's candlelight vigil in san bernardino county for jeremiah mckay. he was a 35-year-old sheriff's deputy, a father of two. he was killed last week while pursuing christopher cover, the

former l.a.p.d. police officer suspected of killing four people. the resort owners up there are ready to put dorner's gruesome death in a mountain cabin behind them now. they want everybody to know big bear mountain is back open for business. a large number of skiers and snowboarders are there for the presidents' day weekend. a crash in oakland involving a sheriff's deputy left a pile of wrecked cars. the alameda county sheriff's office says a deputy and sergeant were pursuing a car that failed to stop for them about 9:30 last night. a witness says the sheriff's suv crashed after swerving to avoid him at 35th avenue near deering street. >> as he hydroplaned, he couldn't maneuver to avoid the car. >> witnesses said the sheriff's suv clipped that car and hit a parked suv and pushed it on top of another car. the driver in the suspect's car

was arrested on the scene. the deputy and the sergeant were taken to the hospital but neither appeared to suffer seer yours injuries. 7:32. uc santa cruz police are looking for a man accused of assaulting and raping a woman on campus. this happened yesterday afternoon. he is described as a white man between the ages of 30 and 40. he has green eyes and dark hair with a mustache and goatee. police say he has a tattoo on his upper right shoulder and smells like cigarettes. anyone with information should call police. the suspected killer of a sue sign city -- suisun city teenager is scheduled for court. anthony lamarr jones is charged with the kidnap, rape and murder of janelle conway allen. she was found earlier this month. jones is scheduled to appear in court this thursday. if found guilty, prosecutors say he could be eligible for the death penalty. he's being held without pail. morgan hill police are

looking for two men who they say robbed a 7/11. it happened after 2:00 a.m. last wednesday morning at the store on main avenue. police say two men, one armed with a semi-automatic gun, the other with a metal bat stole money and lottery tickets before running away. both were wearing dark clothes, gloves and ski masks. no one was injured during the alleged robbery. new information about the deadly valentine's day shooting at the home of oscar pistorius. cnn is reporting that his girlfriend, model reeva steevkamp, was shot four times through a bathroom door. pistorius reportedly picked her up and carried her downstairs while she was alive. there are also reports that banned steroids were found inside the home. s&p's agent says he's -- oscar pistorius's agent says he's canceled all appearances. >> it's a tragedy of events

that's unfolded. we can only give oscar our support. >> the meantime, private funeral services for reeva steevkamp will be held tomorrow in her hometown. family members say her body was returned to port elizabeth yesterday. coming up at 8:30, we'll bring you a live report from south africa for the very latest on the investigation. 7:35. city college of san francisco has less than one month to submit its plan for making financial reforms. one higher education group says the state's rules could be hammering efforts to meet the march 15th deadline. the group points to a he roo choirment giving city colleges academic power to make decisions alongside administrators. some say they should serve to avoid a conflict.

we're seeing record high prices for gas. they could climb higher later this month. ktvu's tara moriarty is live in emeryville to tell us the reason why. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, you may want to brace yourself for what i'm about to tell you. experts say that nationwide, the price of gas could jump up to more than $4 a gallon by the end of this month. that means that here in california, we could be looking at 4.50 a gallon. it's already high. if you take a look at this sign, $4.15 at this gas station in emeryville. experts say the higher prices at the pump are a free reflection of everything from rising crude oil prices to production cuts and refinery -- refinery closings. average prices have risen 9 cents a gallon. drivers say it's taking a toll. >> i'm gonna take b.a.r.t. every day. [laughter] >> reporter: it kind of hurts, doesn't it? >> it does. it does. it takes away from other things you could be spending money on.

>> soon it will be 5, 6 and then 7, right? when is it gonna stop? >> reporter: the national average for a gallon of gas stands at $30.73. san francisco checks in at -- $3.73. san francisco checks in at 4.13. san jose, 4.08. california has higher prices in general because we use a different kind of gas that burns cleaner. congress is being urged to pass a gas tax to pay for the $50 billion proposal by the president for this. we're live in emeryville, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:37. let's check in with sal. light so far. >> it is light. you know, about the -- the good thing about it being light, you won't be wasting a lot of gas idling in traffic. let's take a look at some of these roads for you. you will see that highway 80

westbound looks pretty good getting out to the macarthur maze with no major problems. it's a very nice drive. no problems on the bay bridge. if you are looking at interstate 880, it's a very nice drive. northbound and southbound near the coliseum. perhaps you are frying to catch a flight at oakland international airport. you won't have trouble driving there. around the commute on the senate and -- on the san mateo and bum barren to tige -- dumbarton bridge. the drive has been 17 from grantline to 680 which is great. 7:38. let's go to steve. [laughter] >> it's great. >> i'm not used to saying that. >> it's rare to hear you say that. we have a lot of low clouds in place. it will be cooler and colder tomorrow. i mean colder. just get ready. we're tease -- we were teased with all of that warm weather. another system is coming in. there doesn't look like there's much from this system. this is more of a colder system

than a rainy system. headlines will focus on what looks to be a cool week. cloudy and cole. coldest air comes in between noon and 6:00. we still haveaways to go. if we get anything more than .25, .50, i will be surprised. the system is beginning to inch closer. ia advance of that pushing in the clouds. but the source of the cold air, gulf of alaska is definitely on its way as the low drops right over us. that may trigger thunderstorm activity. even though snow levels if we can get enough moisture to hold on until tomorrow evening. .25 to .50, tomorrow, not today. there will be some snow in the sierra. we could use a lot more. the main emphasis will be cooler today and colder tomorrow. 57 santa rosa, 54 san jose. temperatures have slid right back down. to the north, clouds are slowly beginning to increase.

microsoft is taking action that's heating up one of the biggest rivalries in the tech industry. it launched a campaign, including tv commercials that attacks how it says google minds g mail for information about users. google says it has software that automatically delivers ads that might be of interest to the users. but industry experts say that's been an accepted practice for years. and google may be following in google and microsoft's footsteps by opening a retail store. they have popup stores already. but the idea to launch stand alone stores came up as google prepares to launch high-tech glasses and other product us.

stores could open later this year. and earlier this month, best buy will launch a price matching guarantee. beginning march 3rd, the store chain will match prices at all local retailers and almost 20 online competitors. best buy says it wants to stop the practice called showrooming where customers find a product they liked in the store, then buy it for a cheaper price online. best buy has struggled to compete with amazon and other online retailers. 7:45. a giant product is about to be unveiled in san francisco. ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom with what we know about the big announcement. pam? >> we know that san francisco mayor ed lee has announced a press conference for tomorrow morning. the focus is on the mission rock project. the project is along the where thefront in china basin park. it's right next to at&t park. it will take up pier 48 and parking lot a. the plan is almost complete on the land owned by the giants.

"golf digest" reported that he spent eight hours with tiger's former coach just to get ready. tiger and the president did meet in the past but this was the first time they ever played today. it's presidents' day. all government offices, post offices and banks are closed because of the presidents' day holiday. b.a.r.t. and muni will be on a saturday schedule. a.c. transit and golden gate transit will be on a sunday school. caltrain is son a modified holiday schedule and parking meters in san francisco will still be enforced. 7:49. south san francisco police are looking for the female driver who allegedly hit a 17-year-old girl and then fled the scene. police say the woman hit the girl saturday evening at the intersection of c street and west orange avenue. they say after talking to the girl, the woman drove away. the girl who was in the crosswalk was treated for an ankle injury and released.

the woman was in a silver four- door car and has white or blonde hair. anyone with information is asked to call police. a 72-year-old woman has died from her injuries after being hit by a muni bus. it happened yesterday avenue in san francisco at lake merced avenue. an initial report said she would survive but she passed away during emergency surgery. the bus driver is undergoing drug and clog testing which are standard procedures for accidents. santa rosa police planning to crackdown on drivers today. the police department will be looking for red light violenters and also -- violaters and also peeking talking on cell phones and they will be looking for those not wearing seat belts. the roads will probably -- will probably be busy. a lot of people are coming back after the long holiday. protests against pipelines.

welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell? i'm dave clark. we're be -- i'm tori campbell. i'm dave clark. there was a deadly chase in san jose. police say one person was killed after crashing a stolen car while trying to get away from the police. ktvu's alex savidge in south san jose with what investigators say happened right before that chase started. ail length? >> reporter: well, police say this driver tried to run down a police officer. that's what triggered this high- speed chase with speeds up near 100 miles an hour. it all ended with a crash near up blossom hill road, right near 101. the road has since reopened. traffic is moving in both directions because the crash investigation is now finished. we want to know you what things looked like this morning as the tow truck pulled that crump

pelled suv out of the ravine, where it came to rest after the accident. the 20-year-old driver, a man was thrown out of the suv and was killed. there were two teenaged girls inside that car with him. neither of them were seriously hurt, though. this pursuit all began about 11:00 last night. it was near capital expressway and towers lane. that's where the suv came speeding toward the officer with the lights out. but the officer managed to jump out of the way and that's what started the pursuit. police say this was a dangerous chase as the driver did whatever could to get away. >> he slammed on his brakes so hard, trying to get the officers hit the rear end of him, and that would set off the air bag. that's a technique that they do. the officers were able to avoid that. we believe this was

intentional. >> reporter: what's unclear is why that driver drove the suv toward the officer in the first place. investigators will run toxicology tests to try to see if possibly, the driver was impaired. the driver involved in this crash again was killed. two passengers in the suv, a 16- year-old and a 17-year-old girl. according to a lieutenant on scene, one of those girls is a runaway. reported missing by her parents. investigators say they were called to a home in castroville on saturday on a report of suspected child abuse. the suspect, 47-year-old jesus espinoza, was not there and the baby was also missing. there are reports that he may be headed for mexico. if you have any information,

call the monterey county sheriff's office. an assistant chief with the chp is accused of helping his 20-year-old son, a convicted rapist escape the u.s. back in december, spencer was convicted of raping his neighbor. he was captured in mexico last week and returned to fresno county over the weekend. now his father, assistant chief kyle carber, is facing charges for helping his son get out of the country. his wife and daughter are also facing similar charges. police are searching for suspects after stealing beer at a safeway in mill valley early sunday moring. they took two cases of beer and left in a gold colored van on southbound 101. someone in the van shot at a security guard who went after them. the guard did not get hit but did get the license plate number, 4 dwzy.

8:02. san jose city leaders just appred a plan that hopefully will make their cities safer. ktvu's janine de la vega is in san jose to tell us when hundreds of street lights are gonna be turned back on. here along bascom avenue, we counted nine lights were out earlier when it was dark. inside the neighborhood, it was also quite dark. some residents say that's dangerous. but all of that is go in be changing soon. back in 2008, the city of san jose decided to shut off 900 street lights throughout the city because the staff needed to make budget reductions. the city had to choose between traffic signals and sign repairs or darkening streets. the residents were not happy. they were concerned about safety. the city council just approved the budget reare r -- budget report and decided to turn the 900 lights back on. that will begin in march.

some residents say they have been concerned ever since. >> we catch the bus at camden and hillsdale at 6:20 and i notice a lot of lights are out and i'm in the dark waiting for the bus to come. it was a real concern. >> reporter: they are deciding in march they are gonna turn the street lights back on. are you surprised to hear it? >> great to hear that. >> reporter: in a couple of weeks, 255 street lights will be turned on each month. they will be primarily on arterial streets but there will be some in resident neighborhoods. city officials recommended to do this to ill prove the street appearance and to address public safety concerns. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:04. all of the toll boots on the bridge are open -- booths -- on the bridge are open. lane number 3 was closed while

achievement of her four-year nascar career. she's become the first woman to secure the top starting top for the daytona 500. patrick posted a lap of 160 miles an hour during sunday's qualifying session. the daytona 500 airs right here on ktvu this sunday morning at 9:00. golden state warriors fans finally had something to cheer about during the nba all-star game. david lee became the first to play since sprewell. the irwarrior forward was part of the western conference team that beat the east 143-138. we're learning more about how the shutdown of drakes bay could affect the price of oysters. they are making their final legal push to try to stay open. there's fear if they fell.

oyster prices will shoot up. if their request is turned down again, drakes bay will have to shut down by march 15th. if that happens, the price of oysters are expected to go back up since the farm is responsible for 40% of california's commercial oyster production. the plan to restore the san francisco bay wetlands could get a financial boost. barbara boxer and dianne feinstein, are pushing for the epa to pay for the work. they say the bay is vital to the economy and ecology of northern california. the bay was just added to an international list of eke logically -- ecologically important waterways. and after-hours medical clinic opens today at 5:00 p.m. today. now, it's at an office in the mission plaza shopping center off highway 12 and mission boulevard. the focus of the clinic is treating nonemergency health issues.

turning cloudy to mostly cloudy. a little haze around the edges. some rain tomorrow. 8:12. five crew members from the golden gate ferry are now on administrative leave following a collision with a motorboat. on saturday, it collided with a 22-foot boat minutes after leaving sausalito. the coast guard says the boat was traveling fast and two people were sent to the hospital. the crew members of the ferry will have to undergo a drug test. investigators now know where the fire started onboard that triumph. the coast guard said the fire started in front of a generator in the main engine room. the cruise ship was left without power for five days with 4200 people on board. it may take as long as a year to snow the exact cause of the fire. despite that initial report from the coast guard, congress says more needs to be done. just hours after the triumph was towed to alabama.

senator jay rockefeller sent a letter to the coast guard demanding a yick and through -- quick and thorough review of the incident and similar incidents in the last six years. he says there may be a bigger safety issue that needs to be reviewed involving large passenger vessels. automatic government spending cuts, national security cutbacks and another serious economic problem. we could face those problems if the spending cuts go into effect as scheduled next week. as kyla campbell reports, homeland security says some cuts will affect the operations. >> reporter: homeland security officials say the cuts are mandated by the sequestration scheduled to take effect next friday. homeland security says it would have to cut back on the number of border patrol agents. anybody who is scheduled to fly can expect to wait longer at the airports because the number of tsa workers would be scaled back. there's a natural disaster, an

earthquake, fema would be short $1 well with -- $1 billion with helping potential victims and 2.1 federal civilian workers around the country could face furloughs and job cuts. this is all because democrats and republicans in washington cannot agree to a long-term spending plan. the gop wants $4 trillion in spending cuts. so far, president obama has offered 3 trillion in cuts. but republicans are against the way he wants to save another trillion dollars. >> because president obama and senate democrats see his sequester as an opportunity to push through another tax increase. >> reporter: congress is on break until next monday. when they get back, they will have four days to come up with a plan to avoid the automatic government spending cuts. live in washington, coy law campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:15. california senator dianne feinstein is trying to win support for her assault weapons band by circulating a list at more than 2200 guns that would

be exempt. senator feinstein says the purpose of the exempted guns' list is to make clear the bill would not affect hunting or sporting weapons. her bill would ban 157 guns designed for military and law enforcement use and ban ammunition magazines that hold more than ten rounds. east palo alto police are out there searching for witnesses to a shooting yesterday afternoon. it rapped on -- it happened on runny immediate street. when police -- runnymead street. police say the suspect's car was nearby. no one was inside. no information on the suspect released. journalist laura ling will be appearing and talking about being held captive. she and her colleague were

state may be pushing too hard to recover money from people who start wildfires. the bee "reports for -- the sacramento" bee "reports they've started to pursue those who start fires. the money has been used to fight those fires and the government wants to double the cost of the civil staff recovery program. a senator says the state should put limits on the attempts to recover that money. firefighters are still working to contain a large fire at a recycling plant. look at these pictures. they are using water and foam to try to get control of the flames. within the past 30 minutes we found out two diesel tinks are filled with calcium nitrate, not ammonia. firefighters say calcium nitrate is not as reactive but is still dangerous. 8:18. bmw is recalling almost 570,000

of its cars in the u.s. and canada. the problem is with a battery cable connector that can fail and cause the engines to stall. the recall affects three series vehicles from the 2007 through 2011 model years, it includes sedans, wagons, convertibles and coups. others -- and coupes. . one incident has been reason lated to the recalls but -- related to the recalls but no serious injuries. airport officials in denver, trying several things. they are trying to with a problem with rabbits vandalizing car. the rabbits park under warm, newly-parked car and chew on the insulation on the canes. wildlife experts are removing 100 rabbits every month. the airport is building new fences trying to keep the

rabbits out. they are building new perches to help hawks and eagles prey on the rabbits. car mechanics are spraying car wires with coyote or fox urine which repel the rabbits -- ra people the rabbits. rappel the rabbits. jessica bennett and her adopted son were seated next to this man on a delta flight and investigators say he used a racial slur against her baby when he started to dry and was fussy during the devet and then she said he slapdash dash descent and then she said -- and then she said he slapped the child. >> i couldn't believe that he would say that about a baby or to a baby. and to hit him, i felt like i was in another world. >> huntley has been charged as

regulators are poised to allow airline passengers to use their cell phones in flight but the upcoming change is causing mixed reaction. some european and middle east airlines already allow cell phone use while flying outside u.s. airspace. onboard equipment prevents navigation problems. here in the u.s., the faa requires you to turn off your cell phone before takeoff but that's expected to change. though expectly when is unclear. >> i think that the pros would be that if there's an emergency somebody can get ahold of somebody. >> i think it would be quite a distraction. we might as well bring smoking

are still mourning the death of a 10-year-old girl. she died at an early-morning fire at her family's apartment. brian flores is at the scene with more on what the family is asking from the public. brian? >> reporter: dave, good morning. yeah. such a tragedy for this family as well as the community that lives around here. behind me is the memorial in front of the apartment complex on mariner drive. it continues to grow. but this morning investigators and family members are just left searching for answers as to how this happened. now, the 10-year-old, she died while trying toes cape the burning complex. five members of her family were able to escape but unfortunately, the little girl could not. firefighters tried to rescue her but couldn't reach her because the second floor had collapsed. this morning, this memorial for this little girl, a fourth grader at john muir elementary school in the city continues to grow. the family this morning is left distraught. >> i got all of the kids -- i thought i got all of the kids out.

i didn't know she was the only one left upstairs. as a parent, i feel bad. they wouldn't let me back in. >> how about we not think about what happened? how about we not blame anybody? how about we be grateful and thankful? ♪ >> reporter: dozens of people attended vigils over the weekend, leaving candles, tedby bears, even written messages. cornelius' teachers came to the vigil. they say she was bright and loved to read and write. she won a lot of academic awards and she had ten surviving siblings. there's stress in trying to -- trying to plan the funeral. they are trying to plan something here with, the community, with catholic charities. as soon as we get that information, we'll pass it hey long. we also understand that the family is staying at temporary, nearby housing and they are very distraught on what

happened. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland police are investigating two weekend homicides. police say a 22-year-old man was stabbed to death following an argument on saturday. it happened at an apartment on east 11th street. a $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. in a separate incident, another man was shot and killed on 8th street in west oakland around 5:00 on saturday evening. so far no word of a motive and no arrests have been made. sacramento county sheriff deputies say a robbery attempt that ended with the robber being shot could turn out to be a case of justifiable homicide. a worker at the folsom boulevard store in sacramento says the robber walked in and he could see the man had a handgun. the suspect walked toward the back office of the store where a second worker was. that worker shot and killed the robber. investigators say both workers were cooperative when questioned. >> he may have been looking for cash or looking for phones or rather electronic equipment. he clearly chose the wrong

business to target for a robbery. >> no one else was in the store. deputies are trying to find out if there's a surveillance video of what happened. the same store was robbed last october. investigators say that may be why the store employees were robbed. new this morning, caltrans reportedly is about to spend $9 million to encourage more people to ride trains. the san francisco chronicle says caltrans will spend the money on a three-year ad campaign to boost ridership on three amtrak lins in california. one of them is the capital corridor which runs between san jose and auburn in placer county. record gasoline prices have drivers stunned this morning. prices here in the bay area have hit their highest point for this time of the year. ever. tara moriarty says the numbers are about to did up higher. >> reporter: that's right. industry analysts expect that the price at the pump nationwide will be over $4 a

alex savidge has been on this story. he's back now with an update on what happened out there. >> reporter: this dangerous high-speed chase. the investigation has wrapped up since. traffic is moving again in both directions. i did here back from a spokesperson. they said there's no identity to release on the 20-year-old driver killed in this accident overnight. a tow truck pulled the smash suv out of the ravine where it came to rest. there were also two teenaged girls in the car. neither of them, though, were seriously hurt. the pursuit began just about 11:00 last night near capital expressway and towers lane. that's where a lieutenant said the driver of this suv tried to hit a san jose police officer who was involved in an unrelated traffic stop on the side of the road. the suv drove toward the officer with the lights out. >> as it got closer, he shined

his flashlight on and noticed the driver the vehicle was making eye contact with them. he knew the person was driving the vehicle towards him. he jumped up on the hood of the car. that suspect vehicle continued on on capital expressway. >> reporter: this pursuit reached speeds of 100 miles an hour on and off the freeway. police say the driver at several points tried to hit officers before he eventually lost control and crashed. investigators will now be running toxicology tests on that driver trying to figure out if he was impaired and again get a better -- get a better sense of why he targeted the officer in the first place. there were two passengers inside this suv who survived this crash overnight. a 16-year-old girl and a 17- year-old girl and the lieutenant on scene told me that one of the girls is actually a runaway who had previously been reported missing by her parents. live in san jose, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:49. a crash in oakland c.ing a --
