had to spend so much time and effort. search and rescue lifted the man's body at the north falls. >> the only way sut outis -- out is in the creek bed. it is slippery and wet and treacherous. >> investigators say the victim is believed to be a man reported missing on saturday before being found by rangers sunday afternoon. they say the man fell 130-170 feet but can't say how or why it happened. riskers say the area was posted as -- rangers say the area was posted as off limits. >> lots of trains. old days they were maintained. the area where the events are right now used to have trails, but they have been closed for a long time. >> reporter: visitors familiar with with the park were sad but

not surprised. >> loose gravel, why would you want to do that? >> like going skiing and you will go for it. not a good idea. no, no. >> reporter: again, although officials believe the victim is a man reported missing from santa clara, they have not officially released his name to notify his family. live in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. authorities say a man has been arrested in alabama in connection with a triple homicide earlier this month. three people were found dead in this home on february 5. authorities say he was arrested last week in mobile, alabama. he will be transferred to sonoma county in the future. university of california, santa cruz mese are warning students to -- police are warning students to be on the alert after a woman was raped

and beaten yesterday. she was attacked before 12:30 p.m. in the afternoon near upper quarry amphitheater and the classroom unit buildings. the victim was not a student. >> i think what was unusual about this one was the victim did not know the assailant and it happened in the middle of the day. chats shocking -- that is shocking. >> police released this sketch. he has dark black hair, a goatee and a tattoo on his upper right shoulder bicep area. we have new developments involving a collision involving a golden gate ferry and a speed boat over the weekend. one of the injured passengers has died board the speed boat. he died from his injuries an

hour after the collision saturday afternoon. his co-workers say he was a real estate appraiser who was in town to teach a class in oakland. >> wasn't moving at all. >> had a big bruise in his head, bleeding. >> he and the driver were the only two people aboard the motor boat. mun of the 500 -- none of the 500 golden gate ferry passengers were injured. >> a woman struck by a muni bus is eileen barrett. she was hit saturday afternoon. she was taken to the hospital where she died. the bus driver is under going drug and alcohol testing which is standard procedure. >> part of downtown san francisco was shut down today after a suspicious package was discovered inside the wells fargo headquarters building. police surrounded the building

at 8:00 a.m. this morning and they closed montgomery. the bomb squad investigated and after a few hours gave the all clear. they didn't say what was in the package. now to a story only on 2. our investigation into a pricy conference being attended by the u.s. postal service in the bay area. they are spending $2 million to send executives to san francisco. this comes when the u.s. postal service is losing billions and planning to end saturday deliveries. ktvu's eric rasmussen is live in san francisco with what he learned. eric? >> reporter: they say the conference happening here next month is a critical networking and sales opportunity but critics point out the agenda includes a dance party, dinner event and golf. >> the first day of the forum plays out on the golf course in

san francisco. 4 days, 4,000 people are expected to attend the conference and 400 will be u.s. postal service employees there on the government's dime. documents show the travel, $220,000 in exhibit space will cost $2.2 million. the hotels go for nearly $300 a night before the government discount. >> the u.s. postal service is in financial trouble. it is they should do -- they should do everything they could to do everything on a cost effective basis. >> reporter: he is questioning the spending, considering the u.s. postal service announced they are losing billions of dollars and plans to stop saturday mail service. one worker called it a waste of money. the u.s. postal service told ktvu at least year's conference

a high speed police chase in san jose ended with a deadly crash. police say it started when a man was driving a stolen suv. he attempted to hit an officer making a traffic stop. police say that triggered a chase with speeds up to 100 miles per hour. the suv crashed in south san jose. police say the driver died, two girls inside the suv were not injured. continuing coverage now, gas prices across the country and in the bay area shot up 50 cents in the last month. in san francisco a gallon is $4.13. a month ago it was $3.66. oakland $4.05. san jose $4.07. the rise is likely to get worse

[ music playing ] she and her band took the stage this afternoon. she said she wanted children to feel supported by adults in the community. she hopes to draw attention to the issue of gun violence. autopsy results show a 19- year-old woman found dead in south lake tahoe after a new year's eve party had drugs in her system. the probable cause of alyssa byrne's death is hypothermia. but they said they found evidence of methamphetamine and drugs. alyssa byrne disappeared after a music festival and found near a snow bank a few days later.
