the ocean search for two adults and two children reported missing at sea, we're live with the latest. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. the search continues for a missing family that abandoned ship yesterday afternoon. the focus of the search is off san mateo and santa cruz counties. ktvu's brian flores joins us live from the coast guard station on yerba buena island. he just got a new piece of audio related to the story.

brian? >> reporter: hi, tori. good afternoon. we have the audio. we'll hear it in a second. the silver lining, this continues to be a search-and- rescue mission. the coast guard recently released a five-second transfrom -- transmission from the boat. take a listen. >> coast guard, coast guard, we are abandoning ship. >> reporter: a little get garbled. but it says coast guard, coast guard, we are abandoning ship. a family of father, including a father, a mother and their son and and cousin had to abandon the ship. the boat's electronics failed including the gps. to make matters worse there were not any life vests. we want to bring in pamly mabelen to get the latest from

the coast guard. what can you tell us? >> right now, there's still an active, robust search going on. we have aircraft and boats, doing everything we can, saturating the area trying to find any sign of anybody in the water. so far we found anything. one of the transmissions said they were gonna try to put together a cooler and a life ring. but we don't know if they were able to do that. >> reporter: there's a lot of resources being used right now. a cutter? >> we have a cutter from san francisco being used. we have a cutter from washington that turned around and assisted us. we have two helicopters in the air, aircraft from sacramento. and the california national guard is helping. we have a lot of resources. we've putting -- we're putting as much effort as we can. >> reporter: assuming they are

still alive, can you tell us the water temperature? >> it's 40, 50. when you are out there that long, your body temperature starts to drop. hypothermia sets in. we're still hopeful. if they made it onto the cooler, their -- that could help. we're asking anybody if they have information about the boat "the charmblow," contact the coast guard. we need people to fill in the gaps. >> reporter: and you the temperature in the water right now, could play a role, whether they are found alive or not. we'll keep you posted on the

ktvu news at 5:00 and 6:00 tonight. we're live from yerba buena island, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, brian. investigators in rohnert park are working to figure out what started a huge fire in a vacant home. alex savidge is live at the scene. it sounds like squatters were staying there. >> reporter: a lot of neighbors complain the about people camping out at -- complaining about people stamping out in the home. fire investigators have the house now taped off as they do their investigation and an assistant chief with rohnert park said it was like lib the squatters to started this fire accidentally. >> this is our neighbor's house. >> reporter: cell phone video from a neighbor captured the huge flames overnight that burned through this vacant home in rohnert park. kelly clark shot the video and couldn't believe the size of this fire. >> huge flames.

you could see the flames were probably 25 to 30 feet, maybe more. you can see they went up to the tree. >> reporter: this home has been empty for the past few months. so the big concern for crews was keeping the flames from spreading to neighboring homes. >> i figured, you know, nobody got hurt, i was more concerned with the neighbors on the other side. >> reporter: investigators say the fire started in the carport, an area where squatters have been hanging out recently since it's open to the front street. >> the front had no fencing. anybody could come in. we got reports that people were frequenting it to get out of the cold, rain. >> reporter: and neighbors could tell there were visitors. >> there's a lot of soda cans other there. >> reporter: the fire spread into the house itself causing at least $100,000 in damage. it also burned through this

back fence leading to a neighbor's yard. fire investigators were back out here at the scene early they morning and were able to locate the point of origin. but because of the heavy damage, they may never figure out what sparked the fire. >> reporter: at this point, investigators are still trying to reach the owner of this home who lives out of state. but as you can clearly see, their place has been red tagged by firefighters. also want to point out that rohnert park were telling me they were doing regular checks at this home to check for squatters because of the complaints in this area. they tell me they were able -- they were never able to find anybody here. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. president obama is urging congress to compromise to keep looming spending cuts from kicking in four days from today. speaking to the nation's governors, the president said the impact of the budget cuts may not be felt immediately but he says the uncertainly created

san francisco, cardinal, levada, will be leaving tomorrow. he will be voting on the new pope. in a news conference at st. patrick's seminary in menlo park, he outlined the qualities he will be looking for among the candidates. >> a man of peace, a man of prayer, a person who has shown qualities of leadership either through his work in the nature of an archdiocese in the world or possibly heading a department or perhaps ideally a combination of the things. >> levada says he thinks it's unlikely that any of the cardinals will be able to replace any of the pope. and cardinal keith o'brien has recused himself from the conclave because of accusations he behaved improperly to four priests back in the 1980s.

o'brien denies the charges and says he didn't want to be -- doesn't want be to be the center of this -- want to be the center of this. police in san jose have made a third arrest in connection with a 2010 gang- related ill canning. officers arrested the 25-year- old on friday. he and two pore suspects are accused of the deadly shooting and stabbing of calderon three years ago. he was booked in jail on suspicion of murder. the san francisco police commission is studying whether police should be armed with tasers. the commission just held three public forums to get feedback on the issue. greg suhr has asked the commission to allow officers trained in crisis intervention to carry tasers or stun guns. opponents say tasers can cause serious injuries and death and have caused other cities millions of dollars in

lawsuits. and exclusive field poll just out this morning shows most california voters main favor more gun control over protecting the rights of gun owners. 61% of those polled say they find it more important to place greater controls. that's compared to 34% who say protecting the right to bear arms should be griffin a high or pry -- given a high priority. thousands of a parolees, including convicted sex offenders are removing their gps monitors. there's little risk they will be sent back to prison because of overcrowding. the q los angeles times "reports that a number of parolees are choosing to cut off these devices because they are freed within days or hours of being arrested for violating

opening statements began in a trial in new orleans that will decide how much bp should pay for the gulf oil spill. billions of dollars are on the line. a lawyer representing those hurt by the spill say they were rushed. the explosion killed 11 people in 2010. this smalled millions of gallons of oil in the gulf. new at noon, reform legislation prompted by a california public utility commission's response to the deadly 2010 san bruno pipeline explosion was unveiled this morning. state senator jerry hill says senate bill 611 calls for an audit of the cpuc's account to

check for transparency. hill and other local lawmakers are criticizing this decision last october to abruptly suspend public hearings into how much to fine pg&e for the san bruno explosion. >> the p.u.c. has two main purposes -- to make sure the energy delivered to our homes is delivered safely and to protect our pocketbooks. sadly, it has for many years been failing us on both accounts. >> hill is calling for state auditors to probe whether they are properly overseeing billions of dollars for accounts in projects. gas prices continue to rise in the bay area and the nation. analysts say there are two reasons. one oil prices are rising and two refineries cutting back. the lundberg survey of gas prices says the national average is $3.80. that's up 20 cents in the last

two weeks. as usual, here in the bay area, gas prices are even hire. aaa reports san francisco prices have gone up 12 cents in the week to $4.25. in other parts of the bay area, the averages offer around -- hover around $4.17. that's up 60 cents in the last month. san jose's city council is considering three new taxes to pay for the costs of repairing roads. councilmembers are weighing a quarter or half-cent sales tax and may ask voters to approve a $295 billion bond measure for one-time repairs. it would cost the average household about $100 a year. the city county will take up the tax measure at its march 5th meeting. big changes are in store for downtown hayward traffic. starting at 8:00 p.m., march 15th, a one-way traffic loop he boo gins. the loop will put northbound traffic on foothill boulevard and southbound traffic on a streets and mission boulevard.

the goal is to ease commute traffic through the area which is a popular shortcut between the 580 and 880 freeways. some local merchants opposed the projects fearing it would hurt business. the u.s. state department has joined the search for an oakland couple missing in south america for a month. the state department put out this poster of the couple, jamie neal and garrett hand began a bike tour in november and kept in constant contact with family members and friends on facebook but the posts stopped on january 25th. the next day they were to take a bus from cusco to lima and were safety scene getting in a cab. sometime earlier, the u.s. embassy issued a security alert warning americans about kidnappings in that area. >> what kind of warnings would see they? they are within the people, not watching the news. >> my greatest hope is they return on schedule unharmed.
