the family members and the coast guard is hoping someone recognizes the voice because they don't know who the family is or where they came from. >> coast guard, coast guard, we are abandoning ship. >> reporter: joining us live, petty officer, you have been with us, talk to us about the information you were able to get from that family member. >> that's right, the radio transmission was weak and broken. so we had to piece together what we could. there were a husband, wife and two young children under 8. one of them was the sun of the operator -- son of the operator and the other was the cousin. >> reporter: initially you thought they were 65 miles off. >> we are searching towards the coast of monterey, 65 miles off the coast. >> reporter: they don't know

where the boat registration comes from or where they were headed. >> we don't know where they were going, why they were out there. we are asking anybody with any information board the vessel charm blow, contact the coast guard. >> reporter: okay. what is the search look like tonight? >> we searched by air, sea, we searched all day and all night. we will continue to asearch by boat into -- to search by boat into the morning hours and we will relaunch aircraft and do more searches at first light. >> reporter: thank you very much. tonight with the u.s. coast guard. this search will continue through the night and another update tonight at 10:00 p.m., jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. police evacuated residents as the bomb squad investigates

a suspicious device found inside a home. news chopper 2 was over head. authorities closed off ely boulevard south between caulfield lane and weaverly drive. someone called police at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon notifying them of the device found in the garage. police say that device is an old world war ii shell. at this point authorities haven't said when they will be able to go back home. new tonight at 6:00 p.m., ronald ross kept the faith and kept fighting as he spent 7 years behind bars for a crime he didn't commit. ktvu's paul chambers spoke to ross who spent his first weekend as a free man. paul? >> reporter: i was there on friday when he was released from jail. he said his first weekend of freedom was great, surrounded by friends and family. his attorneys say if it wasn't

for nancy o'malley asking for the conviction to be over turned he could still be in jail. >> reporter: he says spending 7 years behind bars for a crime he didn't commit was a blessing in disguise. >> early 30s, god going to make it a way that i will be 50. >> reporter: 2006, he was sentenced to 25 years to life for shooting a man. but he said he didn't do it. >> i am innocent. i don't know what is going on. >> we met with him in may 2008, it was obvious to us that he was innocent. >> reporter: it would take attorneys and the innocence project to get the conviction over turned. new evidence a false testimony and help from the district attorney was enough to convince a judge. >> she was convinced she

couldn't stand behind this conviction anymore. she took a position and it was just and i admire that. >> reporter: he wrote him $100 for each day spent behind bars. they will help him fight for that. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. >> more details about the innocence project. attorneys receive and review 800 to 1,000 requests each year. right now they are working on 100 cases with 500 back log. since 2001 they have successfully exonerated 15 wrongfully convicted people. the group will honor ronald ross on march 21. police say a man hunt for the suspect in a fatal shooting on the las vegas strip that left a rapper and two people

dead will span the country. harris fired shots into a car. cherry's car hit a taxi that burst into flames killing him, the cabby and a passenger. police say the suspect lived in the southeast and has a criminal record in california. a musician for the san francisco symphony is in the hospital after he collapsed in the middle of a performance over the weekend. will beatty is the oboist for the symphony. the performance was stopped when he collapsed and a ambulance rushed him to the hospital. he suffered a brain hemorrhage. he has been with the symphony since 1979. and oboist since 1987. the sequester budget cuts could spell major trouble for california schools. our state would lose $87

million for education. that would put 1200 teachers and aids on the chopping block. 320 fewer schools would receive federal money. college students and head start would also be impacted. $3million would be cut from california job placement services. grants would be loss for law enforcement and courts and other efforts. tens of millions of army and air force funding would be cut and 64,000 department of defense employees would be put on furlough. the cuts could also slow down ships. new tonight at 6:00 p.m. ktvu's tonvler is -- consumer editor tom vacar is live with more. >> reporter: if congress doesn't act by next week these
