yesterday jeremy goulet blew up. armed and wearing body armor, police say he gunned down two santa cruz police officers. >> if there was ever a case i i wanted somebody who was going to give it their all and do the best job that they could, elizabeth butler was the one. >> a city in mourning for loren baker and elizabeth butler. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00 p.m. >> good evening. i am julie haener. >> and i am frank somerville. >> investigators in santa cruz said the man accused of killing the two police officers was ready and willing to take innocent lives. we have team coverage. ktvu's robert handa is learning

more about the two officers who were killed but we start with ktvu's alex savage and the new details about the suspect. alex? >> the gunman was angry and distraught. but those two santa cruz officer whose came to his house yesterday were unaware of his problems. they came tie the home down this alley way to question the shooter about a sexual assault case involving a co-worker. the two were shot to death that door step of the home. >> reporter: killed during a routine investigation. loren baker and elizabeth butler were gunned down by jeremy goulet. after shooting the officers the sheriff said he stole both of their service weapons and drove off in one of their police cars. eventually jeremy goulet was killed by police and found dead

wearing body armor. the sheriff said people who knew the gunman described him as troublesome. >> he made comments about being unhappy in his life and that led them to believe he may be suicidal. >> reporter: among other things he was upset about losing his job. he was fired over a disorderly conduct arrest and accused of making sexual advances towards a co-worker at this coffee shop. jeremy goulet had a long list of arrests but the sheriff said it was mostly misdemeanors. >> the information that they possessed at the time they went to contact the suspect gave them no suspicion that they would be in danger. >> reporter: investigators confirmed today jeremy goulet served two years in prison in oregon after a 2008 conviction for unlawful possession of a fire arm.

according to reports jeremy goulet was caught spying on a woman in the shower and confronted by her girlfriend. jeremy goulet fired several shots during a scuffle. given the fact jeremy goulet stole the guns and put on body armor the sheriff believes he would have killed more people if police hadn't stopped him. alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. >> this is the first time the santa cruz police department has lost any of its officers in the line of duty and it is sending a wave of grief through the community. ktvu's robert handa is there with how the impact now is having on the community, these deaths, robert? >> reporter: there is still a memorial growing by the hour. and all day for citizens and officers it has been a time of mourning. >> reporter: a steady stream of visitors contributed to the

memorial. many sympathized. >> i can't imagine, you object, the sadness. >> reporter: the police chief held up pictures of the two officers as he addressed the grief over elizabeth butler and loren baker. >> the department is in mourning. our officers are off today. the city is being protected, the community is being protected by the santa cruz county sheriff's office. >> the police department asked the community to help watch out for crime. he plans to do just that. >> when events like this happen then we have to come together and help each other and do what we can. >> reporter: some people knew the slain officers. >> she was a caring loving

police for all of their help in locating their son. john? >> reporter: frank, this is a very happy home tonight. the family talked to their loved ones this afternoon. family of garrett hand was smiling and shedding tears as we brought you live on ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00 p.m. they said they had talked to him around 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. garrett hand and his girlfriend are in peru and lost contact with family last month, that got the families worried something bad happened but turns out they just stopped updating their social media sites. >> first and foremost they are safe. second, we will never be able to thank enough all the people

that rose up to the occasion and gave their time, their resources, numberergy on behalf of our family. >> reporter: that was garrett hand mother. reading a prepared statement and answering no questions. one thing that is unclear is when they will be returning to the bay area. live, john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. police are searching for a 18-year-old high school senior who has been missing for two days. this is a picture. police consider the team at risk but wouldn't say why. he left his home monday night and never returned. 6 feet tall, 165 pounds. he is a senior. police are looking for four men who robbed a liquor store at gun point.

it happened after 10:00 p.m. last night. the clerk said four men in hoodies and ski masks entered the store. one pointed a hand gun while another took cash. police officers and a canine searched for a man who tried to rob a house this morning. authorities say the robber was interrupted while he was committing the crime. police are looking for a white man in his 20s. 5'5". sheriff's deputies cleared away a crash involving a bicyclists and a car. it happened before 1:00 p.m. this afternoon. authorities say no one was hurt. police are searching for a driver wanted in connection with a fatal hit and run. it happened after 1:00 p.m. this afternoon on the 4,000

block of montgomery drive in santa rosa. a man was struck by a 300 series mercedes benz. police say the victim died at the scene. no word on his identity. as most people were sleeping this morning, water and mud poured into homes in san francisco. a 16-inch pipe burst sending water down 15th avenue just after 2:30 a.m. this morning. 23 homes were inundated. six are yellow tagged and 12 cars were damaged. >> the water came up so high it tipped everything over. and the refrigerator was full. it just tipped everything over. it was that high. started floating. >> as you can see the trash

cans were floating. everything. >> the water opened up a sink hole that won't be repaired till tomorrow. they are looking for the cause of the break. the water main break raised new questions about san francisco's aging infrastructure. new tonight at 6:00 p.m., ktvu's rob roth spoke to officials about what needs to be done to prevent these problems in the future. rob? >> reporter: we are at 15th avenue, take a look at the plastic bags. inside them are people's possessions that have to be thrown out because of the water main break. on the street work crews replaced the pipe and are back filling the sink hole. this is just the most recent pipe failure in a never ending problem. >> reporter: one neighbor described it tsunami like. 3:00 a.m. this morning a river of water

began invading homes. >> i am on the bottom floor so my room -- everything. >> reporter: while residents began cleaning up, work crews were repairing a water main that the public utilities commission said was 61 years old. >> reporter: the cause of this is still under investigation. p.u.c. said it looks like two sections of pipe failed. last week an 85-year-old section of pipe bust. water officials say there are two reasons. one is the cold winter water. >> open reservoirs we have, as the temperature drops that could cause expansion in the pipes that the water is traveling in. >> the second reason is age.
