complete bay area news coverage starts right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00 p.m. >> investigators shed more light on what happened to two santa cruz officers. hello. i am frank somerville. >> and i am gasia mikaelian. >> we have a number of new developments in the case of the police officers killed in the line of duty. neither r ficer was wearing body armor and that armor would not have helped them and officers were speaking with jeremy goulet for 20 minutes before he shot them. ktvu's robert handa is live in santa cruz where he learned what happened before the gunman opened fire. robert? >> reporter: it is a tough time for law enforcement as they try grieve, investigate the case and protect the public. we gathered new information from investigators and people. >> reporter: the santa cruz

police department is still mourning the death of the two officers. investigators say loren baker and elizabeth butler were gunned down tuesday afternoon at the home of sexual assault suspect jeremy goulet. a neighbor said he was stopped and questioned by the detectives as he walked by. >> she shared they were trying to engage a suspect in the house and he wouldn't come to the door. >> reporter: investigators reported that the two officers were shot as they approached the house. today the sheriff said they were talking with him through a closed door, emphasizing the conversation made jeremy goulet's attack with his hand gun more of a surprise. >> jeremy goulet disappeared from the door and appeared from another location and ambushed or assaulted the officers. >> i thought that -- that they had taken out the bad guy but

it turned out the other way. >> mike: jeremy goulet thread and later was killed. today a man at the scene before the shoot out talked about his good luck while looking at bullet holes and slugs. >> this happened to go through the rear side of the van and was found in a tool box inside. >> reporter: what are your thoughts about finding it inside your van? >> i am glad it wasn't found inside of me. >> reporter: they announced a memorial will be held march 7. at 6:00 p.m. more on the investigation and the services. live in santa cruz, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. sheriff's deputies have been patrolling santa cruz in the the shooting and this morning they arrested two men breaking into a store. they were scene on surveillance video smashing the window

downtown. they are accused of stealing five skate boards. deputies found them nearby. firefighters are on the scene of a fire burning in vacaville. smoke could be seen. the fire started after 3:30 p.m. this afternoon east of interstate 80. the fire started inside a trailer and spread to a barn. there were reports of explosions as well but no injuries have been reported. the owner says it was sparked by cutting torch. >> in rome, pope benedict xvi stepped down. ktvu's mike mibach is here and shows thus pope's final moments as he left the vatican. >> reporter: it is lent and it is known as one of the holiest seasons in the church and tonight there is no pope as pope benedict xvi is gone.

conclave. the conclave, the history behind it, comes from two latin words, that means the cardinals will lock themselves behind a closed door till they elect a new pope. once inside they aren't just voting, they are candidates. the goal to reach 2/3 majority on one cardinal. if they don't get a majority on one individual they burn it, that is when you will see that black smoke and the catholics will see that. when they reach the majority they will put the ballots in the fire place and that is when we will see white smoke. as soon as we see that white smoke we know a pope has been elected. the shortest lasted a couple hours, the longest, three years. many want to see a new pope by

by a team of police and federal agents in north hollywood. ammar harris fired five shots into a maserati killing kenneth wayne cherry jr. the maserati slammed into a taxi killing two others. he has an extensive criminal history. police are looking for those involved in a shooting. shots rang out after 10:30 a.m. this morning. just a couple blocks away from the bart station. investigators say no one was injured, though two vehicles were hit by bullets. police have a suspect in custody following a fatal stabbing this afternoon, it happened at a home in what police describe as a quiet neighborhood. someone called 911 about a person with stab wounds. by the time officers arrived

the victim had already died. police then took another man into custody who was running from the area. >> we are still talking to witnesses and trying to determine what caused the altercation. we have somebody stopped that might be responsible for this. we are investigating that as well. >> police say the suspect was also injured and being treated at the hospital. no word on identities. police identified a pedestrian who was killed in a hit-and-run accident. officers say the 64 year old was pronounced dead at the scene yesterday afternoon. witnesses only heard the crash. they told police a light colored mercedes sped away. the driver has da hair and may be latino. vice president joe biden is spreading the word about today's approval of a extension

nancy pelosi warns jobs are at risk with sequestration but republicans are saying democrats are painting a picture of doom and gloom. they called for 85 billion in cuts but they wanted president obama to decide what programs get cuts. republicans said no to tax hikes and without an agreement the government will spread out $85 billion in cuts over the next six months. >> take two big cuts too soon you can halt the job -- the economic growth and you can increase the deficit. you do not reduce the definite. >> the automatic sweeping cuts could be reversed before they take effect because congress has to turn in a new budget by march 27.

and $200 for assault weapons. investigating a human skull that was found in union city. teens found the skull in a creek yesterday. police closed the creek trail while deputies search for any other human remains. they don't know how long it was there but it is more than one year. a woman who told police she was sexually assaulted at university of california, santa cruz may be charged after admitting she made it up. she said she was raped and beaten last week. police said the woman admitted it was a hoke. police are sending the case to the district attorney for review and prosecution. 15th avenue in san francisco is still closed as crews continue to fix a sink hole. it was the result of a water main break yesterday afternoon.

officials say the 16-inch pipe pulled apart near the intersection sending water and mud into homes and vehicles. six homes have been yellow tagged. lawmakers took their first step towards passing new consumer protections. bills were passed today. those bills deal with individual insurance regulations that would prevent insurers from discriminating or over charging. the bill now switches houses while they work out the details with governor jerry brown. groupon is replacing their antonio ceo -- their ceo effective immediately. shares closed 25% lower.

firefighters tried to put out a fire in antioch this afternoon. the truck got caught in pg&e wires about 1:00 p.m. the back of the truck then caught fire. the driver was told to stay inside because of live wires but he jumped out and wasn't hurt. some nearby homes were evacuated. the bart board of directors voted to raise fairs and start charging for parking at several more stations. ktvu's rob roth is here now with how much more you will have to pay and when it goes into effect. rob? >> reporter: we are in the parking lot of the hayward bart station, one of seven that are free but not for long and that is not all that is going up. >> reporter: when it comes to buying a bart ticket these may be considered the good old days because the board of directors voted to raise fairs by --
