. cleaning up the streets. we are live in vallejo with the incentive police are offering to gun owners to try to get them to hand over their firearms. and the sground giving way. we're going to show you the new sink holes opening up and explain the new risk facing this san francisco neighborhood tonight. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00. good evening, everyone. i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. new sink holes are opening up tonight in a san francisco neighborhood that flooded after a water mane ruptured. ktvu david joins us now live with new concerns the situation there could get worse as rain moves in this week. david. >> julie, you can see one of three red tagged homes behind me. this neighborhood is struggling to recover even as residents here make some disturbing

discoveries every day. >> it still hasn't sung in yet, you know. >> raven cruze bought his 145th avenue home last year. an underground water pipe ruptured last wednesday sent 10s of thousands of gallons of water rushing down his street. >> this morning we found a sink hole in our place. >> today as cruz repaired the street and neighbors continued cleaning out their homes, cruz made his depressing discovery in the family room. >> there was floor over it that got flood so we had to pull that floor up, and there it was just all the concrete had given way. >> it's anl about two feet wide, but much smaller than the other sirng holes that have appeared on this block forcing neighbors out of their home sfls three homes have remained red tagged and may be for some period of time due to a void underneath their foundation. >> the city is taking claims for the rupture and is replacing damaged furnaces and water heaters for those who remain here. in a meeting late today public utility officials announce add

plan to expedite reimbursement for critical items such as clothing in seven to ten days. >> it hit the fur mas, about halfway up the furnace. that's why we don't have any heat. >> despite the sink hole, cruz says his family is still better off than some of his neighbors. >> we're probably going to make it through okay, but there's probably six months worth of building to do downstairs. >> there's no damagest mat yet for wednesday's flood, and neighbors here are now bracing for rain as soon as tomorrow night. the puc says it's making sure the suer pipes and gutters here are clean to keep water flowing and away from the foundations of these homes. reported live in san francisco, ktvu channel 2 news. a backhoe rupture add gas line this afternoon prompting the evacuation of a condominium complex near the great mall. the leak was reported at about 1:20 this afternoon near main street and great mall parkway. news chopper 2 was over the scene shortly after a contractor hit the two-ifrmg gas line. residents of the nearby centria

condo complex were briefly evacuated. it took pg&e about an hour to cap that leak. we are following developing news tonight in richmond. news chopper 2 was overhead as police respond today a fatal shooting at sixth street and pennsylvania avenue. a police spokeswoman tells ktvu the department shot spoert detected gunfire at that location at about 3:40 this afternoon. she says a 21-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene. police have not released any suspect information but witness say they saw two men running from the scene. we're learning more tonight about three people suspected of trying to steal a multimillion-dollar yacht before getting stuck in shallow water off the beach in pacifica. ktvu's eric is live there now where we watched police arrest those three as they were brought to shore. eric. >> we dishgsd frank, and this might turn out to have been a very costly joyride. you can see the yacht, the sailboat behind me. right now it is stuck, we're told, in about four feet of

water. as the ten foot kill that is jammed into the sand and you can see the other boat out there attempting to tug it free tonight. fish and game told us this boat has about 700 gallons of fuel on it so there are certainly questions tonight about just how far the suspect esed to go. >> from a distance they appeared to be sailors in need of help. people watched as the man at the helm tried to free this 82-foot luxury yacht stuck in the sand in shallow water off of lind mar beach in pacifica. >> he's creating a hole in the sand by turning the row tore back and forth. >> police now say it may have been a desperate last attempt to make a get away. when the owner of the darling saw his boat on live tv this morning he called police to report it stolen. around noon authorities on the beach with guns drawn convinced two men and a woman to get off of the multimillion-dollar boat. they're suspected of stealing it. the crew on a neighboring boat told us they noticed people board the yacht overnight for what appeared to be a social

gathering. our camera recorded officer taking away bags of possible evidence. authorities say they found a mess on board which may have included pizza and beer. >> it's a shame that somebody would take a valuable item like that and -- and potentially destroy it for a joyride. >> the boat's owner did not want to talk to us about what happened as he worked on making arrangements to have the darling pulled from the shallow water where it's been stuck all day. >> back out here live, they've been work on this effort for a couple hours now to dislodge this boat. i'm told if it doesn't work they might bring in a tug boat to try to free the boat you see here tonight. now, the three suspects that were on that boat have been identified as 63-year-old leslie gardner, 54-year-old dario mura and 56-year-old lisa mode well. they're expect today face charges of grand theft and conspiracy. live in pacifica, eric, ktvu channel 2 news. a fast-moving fire destroyed

part of an iconic los gatos restaurant early this morning. the happy hound duringer and hot dog restaurant has been a fixture for 42 years. just before 5:00 this morning a passing motorist saw flames and called 911. it took fire crews about 40 minutes to put out the fire but by that time, the damage had been done. >> bad dream, nightmare. first you look and it's hard to xrend that that's really what's going on. >> no word yet on a cause, but investigators say they are looking into the possibility an electrical fire is to blame. the owner says he hopes to eventually rebuild and reopen the business. a man shot and killed by daly city police over the weekend has now bun identified. police say 23-year-old aaron sawyer led officers on a chase while driving a stolen car in daly city early saturday morning. that chase ended near candle stick park in san francisco when sawyer abandon it had car and took off running. police say an officer shot and

killed sawyer after he showed off a handgun. sawyer was oun out of four people killed by police in bay area over the weekend. a shelter in place was issued for san jose elementary school today after three burglary suspects were seen nearby. a resident on the 1300 block of wylie way called police about 10:00 this morning when she heard people breaking into her home. the three suspects ran away and were seen near payne elementary school on gleason avenue. officers caught them shortly after. the shelter in place wiz wusz liftd bid 12:20 this afternoon. new at 6:00 tonight, one police department gearing up for a county-wide gun buyback decided to show people today just how many guns they've already pulled off the streets to keep residents safe. ktvu's jade is live in val val this evening, and you just spoke toth police chief. >> frank, he laid it all out on the table for us. what you see right here is evidence about 50 firearms seized just last year. none of these weapons were used in homicides but they were used in robberies, aggravated assaults and other crimes in the

city of vallejo. the scary fact, the guns, rifles and automatic weapons here represent less than one quarter of what was pulled off the street in 2012 and vallejo police have already taken 40 weapons off the street this year alone. >> any guns we can take off the street makes it worth doing. you know, the fund that is we raise primarily, the majority of those funds came out of asset seizure or asset forfeitture accounts. those were cases, you know, where we had investigations related to drugs and whatnot. >> vallejo's police chief says his department has joined with so lano county and other ajenisis for this weekend's gun buyback. up to $100 for guns, shotguns and rifles, up to 200 tlrs for assault weapons. this is like all other buybacks in the bay area recently, it's a no-questions-asked policy. >> any guns we take off the street makes it worth doing. you know, the funds that we raise primarily, the majority of

those funds came out of asset seizure or asset forfeitture accounts. those are cases where we had investigations related to drugs and whatnot. . >> the gun buyback will be held this saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 at the solano county fairgrounds. reporting live in vallejo at police headquarters, ktvu channel 2 news. santa cruz police say they are preparing to say good-bye to two fallen heros on thursday. organizers have moved a memorial for sergeant lawen butch baker and detective elizabeth butler to san jose's pavilion to accommodate the growing number of people expect today pay their respects. governor jerry brown is expected to attend. investigators say baker and butler were ambushed by jermy while questioning him about misdemeanor sexual assault allegations. for those who can't make it, they can wauven a live broadcast of the service at the new kaiser pem innocent arena.

the arena holds about 3300 people. and ktvu will carry the memorial live in its entirety. our coverage begins at 11:00 a.m. with the funeral procession and the service is expected to begin at noon again at hp pavilion. shares of three well-known silicon valley high-tech companies are setting records. stock in mountain view's google continues to go up just two weeks after cracking the $800 mark for the first time. linked in also based in mount view is reaching new highs after positive earnings reports last month, and sunny vail-based yahoo stock is reaching prices not seen in more than four years. here is a look now at where the silicon valley giants ended the day. google stock gained 15 points. linked in was up seven points and yahoo was up about 3%. while those companies are driving, stock in apple has hit its lowest level in more than a year. shares closed at about $420 today. ach l stock reached its highest level the day the iphone 5 was

. a man accused of fatally shooting an oakland-based rapper and the death of two other people in las vegas last month

appeared in court today. 26-year-old amar harris did not enter a plea during the extradition hearing. he was arrested in los angeles last week harris opened fire on kenneth cherry, jr. of oakland that triggered a fiery crash. a young man was shot and killed in the city of campbell. it's the first homicide there in five years. police say 18-year-old richard vega was shot several times la night while out on a walk near his home on lat mer avenue. he was taken to the hospital where he later died. investigators don't know yet if the shooting was gang related but say there is no evidence vega was in a gang. vega's sister told us the family was searching for answers. >> he had a huge heart, huge huge heart. he was a good kid. you know, anybody who knows anything, you know, regarding what happened, please, lieshgs come forward just so that, you know, you could help us get some peace. >> veg sashgs a graduate of

santa clara high school. that's where friends and family plan to gather tonight for a candle light vigil at 7:30. only on 2 tonight, ktvu has learned that napa police are investigating a possible hate crime. it happened last thursday night at this star bucks on first and main street. police tell us a customer found a noose hanging in the men's bathroom. detectives have not yet had a chance to to the employee who was told about it but police tell us he is african american and fears this is a hate crime. >> finding a noose anywhere is kind of unusual. we don't get a lot of that so that does spark a little bit of interest on our part. >> i am totally surprised. i go to that star bucks every day, and i've never seen anything bad happen around. >> police tell us they're waiting for star bucks to give them access to surveillance video recorded inside that coffee shop. an arson investigation is underway at a san jose high school tonight after a

third-suspicious fire in a week started on campus. the flames were reported at independence high school just after noon. school officials say the fire damaged offices used by 12 to 15 administrators and staff members and a student lunchroom. no one was hurt. fire officials have not released details about the two previous fires. thousands of higher education students marched on the state capitol today demanding years of tuition hikes be rolled back. new at 6:00 ktvu's ken is in sacramento with a new plan to boost college funding. ken. >> well, these students who were marching today are from uc, csu and community colleges from all around the state. it is a march that we see every year protesting new cuts to hire education. the twist this year is that there are no new cuts as much as they are protesting the cuts that they have seen, deep cuts at which they want to undo from the past five years. you can hear the demands in this

chapts, not just tuition hike reversals but that hire education should be free. >> i am going to school. i'm going to leave college with about a thousand dollars -- i'm sorry. $11,000 in loans. i'm trying to be a lawyer. i'm looking at $200 thoishgs in loans to finish my degree. >> this march comes at an interesting time. much out of that money goes to education but higher education enough to avoid further cut sfls this is the first year that we've had some -- since 2007 that we've had funding restored. >> prop 30 was not the only answer. >> introusd a bill that she says would raise at least $2 billion a year by taxing oil with most of the money split between community colleges, uc and csu. >> we are the only oil-producing state in the nation that does not tax oil that is extracted from our grounds. oklahoma does this. texas does this. avk alaska does it as well as

many other states. >> this so-called oil severance tax has been floated several times before by different lawmakers with the money going for different causes or purposes. senator evans intends her bill once it passes, she intends the money from her bill to go towards tuition relief. in sacramento, ken prich et, ktvu channel 2 news. a new report is casting some doubt on the integrity of safety tests performed on strait freeways and on the ve knee sha bridge. the sacramento bee reports four caltran engineers ignored data or misrepresented their findings. two of the engineers still worked for caltran. the freeways in question are all in southern california. caltran says those freeways have all been tested along with the venetia bridge and all were deemed safe. three young bay area musicians have been selected to play in the first ever karnegie

hal first ever orchestra. they will spend three weeks on tour in july. the youth orchestra has performances scheduled at washington dc's kennedy center as well as stops in moscow, st. petersburg and london. temperatures on the mieltd side out there. we've got a pretty nice night. some coastal fog showing up offshore right now. you can kind of see it. that's going to get ahead of this next weather system so tomorrow morning look for patchy coastal fog. daytime highs were kind of on the cool side lots of upper 50s and low 60s. cooler than it has been. this system moving in is going to change our climate quite a bit as it increases the clouds tomorrow and brings in lower snow levels, cold air coming in, and produces rain. are we going to get a lot of rain? it's going to be a good amount of rain. i think we can see a half inch to an inch of rain. it would be nice if there were multiple storms out there. right now looks like one storm with impulses that will feed through as we go into the day overnight tuesday, wednesday,

and then into thursday, but it's nothing super well organized except this first hit as we go into tomorrow night early wednesday morning. so if we get an inch of raven, that would be great. we need more. there's not much behind this, but we will notice low snow levels, and we will notice a wet morning commute. i think the big impact by tomorrow night it's not raining that hard here but by wednesday morning the roadways are wet. here we are tomorrow. clouds increase. showers show up in the north they say after 4:00 then overnight the shoirs move in and that's going to leave wet road waist on your wednesday morning commute. and it'll rain. this is where you're going to get your quarter inch to half inch of rain overnight tuesday to wednesday then after that we get scattered showers. here's the setup oun the computer model. here's the front about 1:00 tomorrow comes closer in the north baby about 7:00, 8:00. here's your morning commute. i'm sorry. there's your 10:00 news tomorrow night raining. here comes your morning commute here. winter storm warning in the mountains. okay. so is it over?

there's more instability behind it as we go into wednesday night more scattered showers. there may be some drizzle coming from the skiechlt on thursday secondary impulse comes in, more scattered showers. so this isn't going to be a huge rain producer, but we are going to stay wet for about 48 hours. umbrellas will be needed. it also means the roadways wednesday morning are going to be kind of wet so slow going on those commutes. we haven't had that in awhile. quite frankly january and february were like march and april. it was so nice, but we are going to have some wed and slick roadways so the roads are going to be pretty slick wednesday morning. >> finally some rain. >> we need it. thanks bill. the los gatos city council is schedule today meet in just about half an hour to discuss restricting gun sales in that city. the meeth stems from an up roar over the sale of certain guns at the sports store. the city council could decide to implement an urgency ordnance that would place a temporary

. san ramon based 24 hour fitness open add new super sport club over the weekend and is working on another super size location in hayward. at 45,000 square feet the new facilities are much larger than the other 24 hour fitness locations like the one you're looking at here. the company says the $25 million expansion is also bringing at least 200 new full-time jobs toth bay area. >> all right. mark joins us now 49ers making news today. >> daid acres may be work at 24 hour fitness soon.
