registered sex offender has been arrested after breaking into a home. janine de la vega is in san jose to explain what police found on the man when they made the a orest, -- arrest, jeanine? >> reporter: police found women's underwear in his pocket and they are gathering evidence here at this home. this is the home where a sex offender broke into and we are near 101. the woman is interviewing with police and a 52-year-old woman

said a man broke into her home in south san jose and she said she was sleeping and woke up to find that male intruder standing over her bed. she screamed and he ran away and the woman was able to get a goodies description of him -- good description of him. >> she described him as a male with a bald head wearing a plaid shirt. we made contact with him and the victim came and positively i.d.s him and she said he stood over top of her and she screamed and he ran out. >> his name is ryan cancel and he was on parole for robbery and is -- robbery and was wearing a gps and had women's underwear in his pocket but we do know the woman does have daughters and police found his car parked out front and they are processing it for evidence. officers say he has relatives in the neighborhood and is familiar with it and that's why he may have been here. you are looking at a live tow truck, and this is the suspect's car and police are towing it away for evidence. again, it is unknown if this woman was targeted or if this was random but coming up on the

morning news, we will tell you why police -- that this may have happened here and why they already had their eye on this neighborhood. ktvu channel 2 morning news. a stole leap yacht found in passive can yesterday, the stolen yacht is now at a harbor in richmond and we showed you this yacht when it was towed in just about 30 minutes ago. here is more on what is next for that sailboat, alex savage has more. >> reporter: the darling has arrived at this boat yard in richmond and behind me crews are getting set to hoist this boat up out of the water after what was a four hour trip from passive can early this -- passive can early this -- pacific. the captain of the ship is on

hand and will now get a closer look at the damage. the owner doing the recovery said it has a burned up engine and the tugboat is freed after it ran aground in four feet of water off of the beach. they found four people on board that boat, two men and two women stole the multi-million dollar yacht. the accused thieves got it wedged in the sand and the owner of the salvage company said this was an unusual recovery operation. >> that is the first one where i seen them have to get the perpetrators off. you know usually the perpetrator when it goes aground, they hit the beach running. >> reporter: now the coast guard showed up to do a rescue operation but they became

suspicious because the people on board refused help after they got stuck. then the rightful owner saw it on the news and called police. they found beer and pizza as well on board the ship. now up above the richmond boat yard crews are hooking up this yacht and they are preparing to hoist it up out of the water and they will be doing more assessments at the yard. they said at least at this point it is too soon to put a dollar figure on this pricey vessel. alex savage ktvu channel 2 morning news. a memorial for a 16-year- old girl who was killed moments after her birthday. she was hit by a car on veil avenue. she was a junior at veil high school and a member of the track team. her teammates plan to wear

black ribbons at a mete later this week. police suspect he was driving drunk. police are now -- people are now petitioning the city to put a stoplight at that intersection. i pray you will be our eyes... >> reporter: last night a vigil was held for 18-year-old richard vega who was shot in campbell. he was a football player at the high school and graduated last year. police are not sure if the shooting was targeted or random. some are saying he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and so far no arrests have been made. here at the vatican in rome once again cardinals are meeting to look at potential candidates to become the next pope. some put together the names of cardinals they want removed

from that list and the group represents clergy and sexual abuse and does not want any of the current leadership of the catholic church. this scandal is expected to play a big part in the selection of the new pope. and in the meantime, he is on the short list to become the next pope. carlos lewis is in the philippines and he is known to connect with the masses. he brings many to laughter and tears at very emotional sermons and prides himself in keeping in contact with catholics on facebook. i want to check in with sal for a look at the traffic, sal? we have a crash on 880 and hayward and that came in on the right shoulder and in the right lane so watch for that. let's look at the bay bridge

and we are getting a little bit of a backup and metering lights are on and once you get on to the bridge it does look good in san francisco with no major problems and the morning commute looks good on 101 approaching the 880 split into san francisco. we talked about 880 near hayward, there could be something there or somebody could have reported southbound and chp found it and 880 and north street. the rain is not going to hit us just yet but by tonight, it is still well to the north and even cent city is reporting rain and it is not here just yet. we have low clouds developing and it is not as widespread in the overnight hours and many of us are waking up a few degrees above freezing and it is coming

through especially in the north bay where temperatures are in the 30s. mid-30s in and around novato. here is the storm that will bring us rain to the bay area, snow to the mountains and we have a dusting because snow levels will drop down about 3,000 feet. i will stop it where i think we may actually have critical moments and by of that -- because of that drive, into the evening it takes until 7:00 before we move into the north bay and i believe your evening drive will be fairly nice. we have sprinkles but the steady rain will hold off and it is sliding into the peninsular as well as the south bay. when the front moves through, so will the winds which will be gusty at times. wednesday morning, the commute looks a bit wet. the afternoon drive looks okay

and by thursday we are starting out dry and the rain will be with us and scattered showers remain in the forecast. we are looking at partly cloudy skies and a mix of sun and clouds for the afternoon and temperatures are a lot like yesterday, a little bit on the cool side but not too bad. there is a view of what you can expect into the weekend and temperatures will fall in addition to the rain and snow and mid-to-upper 50s wednesday and thursday and into the weekend we are drying out. mid-to-upper 50s and i will tell you how much rain to expect with this system coming up. they claim they are fueling their demand for ivory and what google is accused of doing by what it may be allowing on its website. how the sequester is affecting president barack obama's approval rating. and this is affecting san francisco gun owners, stay tuned.

san francisco woman who was stabbed to death right in front of her two children will go before the supreme court. claire was killed 13 years ago by her ex-boyfriend terry ramirez. two years ago they overturned his murder conviction because the court said jurors were misled about the option of a manslaughter verdict. today they will ask the court to reinstate the second-degree murder conviction. an autopsy is revealed about the shooting. a kidnapping suspect was shot twice by sheriff's deputies police say he was lunging towards the right side of his car but they thought he was reaching for a weapon, a knife and stabbing weapons were found inside the car and they crashed during a police chase triggered by text messages from the woman

their investigation. water-main break in san francisco is being blamed for three new sinkholes and the whole city is a constant risk for more sinkholes. thousands of gallons were flooding the area and since then new sinkholes have appeared. engineers say sinkholes could happen all over the city and most of san francisco is built on top of sandwich easily can giveaway. right now they don't -- san which easily can give way. they are moving ahead to require seismic upgrades all over the city. yesterday they are giving permission to upgrade buildings to withstand bigger earthquakes. it will be up to the city to determine which of the building will allow improvements and

short time ago it was hoisted up out of the water and i want to get you to some of this video. we have a portion of the rutter that appeared to have broken off. a tugboat freed the darling after it ran aground off the beach and police ended up arresting four people on board that yacht who stole that multi- million dollar boat and those accused thieves ended up getting the boat wedged into the sand and they did quite a bit of damage. >> we know the rutter is bent and we are talking on a quite a bit of water and we are taking it from the rutter shaft. as to what else, we suspect the engine was burned up and we are pretty sure the propeller is bent on it there is probably some damage to the keel.

still here wrapping up their investigation as to what happened to this homeowner there. the woman got the surprise of her life by a burglar and she was still able to get a goodies description -- good description of that suspect. a 52-year-old woman called 911 to report amylin electrocutedder and woke up -- a male intruder he woke up to find him standing over her while he was sleeping. the police spotted him trying to escape the perimeter and they were able to arrest him and neighbors are disturbed. >> if it is random, it's scary and either way it is scary, that's all i could say but i will be on the lookout a lot more. >> reporter: police identified the suspect as 29-year-old ryan cancel of san jose.

he was arrested for violating parole and he is on parole for robbery and we are told he is a registered sex offender and was wearing an ankle bracelet. police found woman's underwear in his pockets and they know they did not belong to the woman and she does have daughters and they know the daughters live in the home and police say he lives in the area which may explain what he was doing here. his car was parked right outside the home and police had it towed for evidence purposes. we are also told by police people had been complaining about male being stolen an auto thefts and they were already doing routine patrols which is why they responded so quickly. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 morning news. they will decide how to fill the position as president of the board and it comes after

unmarked police car over the weekend. police say it was taken saturday night in an area south of market. police still have not said how or where it was recovered but more information is expected to be released later this morning. police in oakland are looking for the person who led them on a high-speed chase. it ended on keller and mountain boulevard after the suspect crashed. the driver took off on foot and police believe the driver was armed and selling guns. they have a new leader to see over reforms. thomas frasier is the new compliance director. frasier is a former baltimore police commissioner and spent 28 years with the san jose police department. he will have brought powers and will have the police chief howard jordan fired. the chief ruled they fully complied with court ordered
