best investigators in the entire santa cruz police department. elizabeth butler apparently loved to ride roller coasters and hike, and obviously spend a lot of time with her partner, peter woo and their two sons. we saw the pictures moments ago of officer butler out there picking a christmas tree with her two young sons. we're going to pick up and stop talking for a couple of minutes and listen in, as this memorial service pretty much gets under way.

as loud as raucous as the place can sometimes get, it is a completely different story today as the community and the bay area has come together to honor the two officers who gave their lives in the line of duty and were ambushed in santa cruz about a week and a half ago. >> you see the procession there in the little box on the screen, you see the people always very powerful when you see this, the people lining up on the side of the road and saluting as the procession goes by. this memorial service is expected to last for about three hours. among other things, leon panetta, california's attorney general kamala harris. governor brown is not expected to speak. alexis butler will give the eulogy for her sister, officer elizabeth butler and one of the daughters of officer baker, jillian baker will read a poem. as we mentioned earlier, james durbin from the bay area, a

such as this to teach their children. the men and women we see drive by, the chp on the freeway, they are there to help you. when what happened on tuesday happened to these two police officers, any time you see a police officer, you say thanks or you nod in respect or you're pleasant, because they do put their lives on the line for you. again, so many parents, taking this opportunity to teach their young children just that. >> yeah, every day they go to work, you don't know whether they are going to be coming home. as is the case here, two officers never came home after going to work last week. elizabeth butler and officer baker. these kinds of situations here, so sad, so emotional, so powerful. but one of the things that i've always noticed about memorials is that there are always some light moments as well. some fun stories where you get a sense of how the people, who the two officers were. and as robert handa was telling us earlier, the family
12:10 pm
specifically requested in this case that they keep some of the stories light. i mentioned i was looking at the santa cruz police blog the other day and they had some very casual pictures of the officers. and in one of them, it cracked me up, you see officer baker, standing next to a guy, giving him rabbit ears while he was getting his picture taken. it's just, you know, it was cute, really cute. >> and the thing i think so often when people do see police officers or firefighters or chp, they think i'm not like that man or like that woman. he or she is in a uniform, i'm just driving my car, maybe getting pulled over talking on the cell phone. sometimes there's a feeling of you don't know me, but then when we learn these men and women, he are heading of the pta, bake the cupcakes, coach the soccer games, help teach children to read in the library, on their off time. and you think, wow, i am like them or they are like me and it hopefully builds a feeling of

community that is tasked to be good to them while they protect us. >> one of the things you may be wondering is why didn't we see the caskets being led in. they had already arrived earlier, specifically they wanted them there overnight. then when this memorial ends, we are not going to see the caskts being taken out either. for some reason, they decided not to do that. they will be taken out at a private time later. we will see everyone filing out, going through a police gauntlet, if you will, and a motorcade back down to santa cruz. there you see some of the motorcade leading up to santa cruz. they actually got from santa cruz to san jose a little faster than they were expecting to get there, going over 17, very long motorcade. but they all arrived at hp pavillion a little early and we saw some pictures of everyone
12:12 pm
essentially hanging out until they opened the doomplets but just thousands of people on the floors. a pavillion that can hold 18,000, 20,000 people for a sharks game, it is absolutely packed with police officers, with firefighters, and the first level, a two-level arena, the first level is also pretty much packed. but robert handa was telling us earlier the second level is empty. but, you know, that's probably, maybe 10,000 people are so inside hp pavillion, which is exactly why they moved it to hp pavillion, because the arena down in santa cruz only holds about 4000. >> but that arena there, as we can see on the smaller right- hand side of the screen is being used so people can watch a live stream of today's memorial service. there are people seated there on the ground, also in the stands. and so certainly that is one place where people can come together in the city of santa cruz and watch today's events. again, here, as we see the officers as they were filing into the hp pavillion, a minute

ago we were able to show you pictures. if we can bring them back, i would like to. residents lining the sides of the streets. we saw men and women holding american flags, two fingers newspaper a v, and also saw a woman giving the i love you sign, the sign language sign for i love you. these are things i don't know we would do on a typical day for the police officers, and thank you for bringing those pictures back, as we see men and women lining the streets and taking off their hats and bowing their heads in a sign of respect. and again, the american flags, just the outpouring of love, and especially of support, because there are so many times when police officers help us and we don't have the chance to say thank you. and this is a situation where i think people sort of save up all the thank yous and give them back on a day like this. but as the santa cruz police chef seed, his memorandum and women were going to be going back on duty after the killings, when you see one of us, just say thanks. that can be -- we've heard of brownies being delivered, different ways to say thank

you. i think for police officers, they certainly will tell you that they appreciate it all, that no gesture is too small, and that they really take it to heart. again, boy, what a different scene. now we're inside the hp pavillion, a very, very somber scene inside. lights are low, flowers there, everyone gathered to say good- bye for the two officers who are being honored today. outside, as all the officers were making their way to hp, it was kind of a collective hug, if you will, to say thank you for all you've done, thank you for all that you will continue to do, and we are here to support you when your hearts and our hearts are heavy. i'm looking at pictures on my channel 2 facebook page of the two officers and got a comment from one woman here who says i grew up on the west side, still have family and friends in town. this has been absolutely awful. i know many people who are attending the services and lining up on ocean street to see the procession. i can't attend, but i will be

watching through the web. and another person, and this is exactly what we've been talking about. i've put up the casual picture of officer baker, with his two daughters and his son, taken on the beach. and this person, billy andrews writes, boy, sure is a different realization when you see the officer pictured with his family. my condolences to the family and friends. and as we've been talking about, normally you just see the officers in their uniform. they put the uniform on and it's serious business. they are at work. they take their jobs very seriously. then when you see them outside of their uniforms, you're just reminded that they have families like you and i. and they are people just like you and i. >> even within their own police organization -- because truthfully, so many of us, we're one person at work, another person at home. but i really like it when we get to hear what the men and women were like within their own police departments. because just in our news rooms, there are people who are mentors, people who are class clowns, people who are all-

business all the time and don't like anybody screwing around. so when we hear this information about the officers and how they were at work, you think, wow, even though i saw him or her, straight face in the patrol car, you know, really focused and very, very much on duty, you know they must have had lighter moments inside the police department, barbecuing with friends, inside the police department. that's when you really do realize they may work solo, may work in pairs, as these two did, they really did have friendships, bonds, and each this their own role within a big organization. here now, we're able to show you our first live pictures of the governor making his way inside hp pavillion. again, governor jerry brown came down to san jose from oakland today. he is now being seated. at this point, we're about 15 minutes into where the memorial should have started. so, again, we are going to be expecting to hear the bag pipes very, very soon, again, sort of

signaling the unofficial, perhaps even the official start of this memorial service. so often, you do hear the bag pipes and that's when you know things are about to begin. >> i'm guessing the reason it's running a little bit behind schedule is because the governor was scheduled to meet privately with the families of the two officers. and again, i'm just guessing here, that that's what he has been doing and we saw him a moment ago being head to his seat. i imagine that at any moment, we will probably see the families of the two officers being led in. and again, we've been talking about it, but officer baker, three grown children and a wife officer butler, a partner, also two very small children, one two and a half and one five and a half. hopefully led in momentarily and we'll get the memorial under way, as gasia mentioned, with the bag pipes playing to signify the beginning of this. you see the beautiful flower

arrangement there and the two caskets. i was talking to robert earlier. i remember when the four police officers in oakland were killed and you had the four caskets lined up there on the stage and in front of them were the officers' boots and two of the officers were motorcycle officers and they had their helmets right next to the caskets. i can't tell if there are boots or uniforms next to these caskets, but we have been told that there are a lot of pictures obviously of the two officers and their families surrounding those caskets. >> you have to think about all that these two officers had seen in their careers. i'm just reading comments here about loran baker, someone describing him as very sensitive. he was a really sensitive police officer, saying he was very concerned, very considerate, and you have to understand all that they saw in the course of their jobs and for them to take all that in and then still go home and be mom and dad and do all the things they have done for their families and spouses and partners, it really is
12:19 pm
incredible. again, that goes back to one of the reasons why people chose to take this day and either attend the memorial there, being live streamed in voces, to make the trek to the hp pavillion or line one of the freeway overpasses or go down to the road there, hold the american flags and flash the peace sign or give the i love you sign and really let the officers know that we do appreciate all that you do, even though we don't always say thank you. but this is an opportunity where people feel they can sort of give out those saved-up thank yous, because on a day like this, you can certainly understand why the officers themselves really need it. officer baker, quite frankly, sounds like a real crack-up. more i read about them, the more he cracks me up. sounds like he had a wonderful personality, a great sense of humor. from what i understand, he constantly wore shorts, no matter what the weather was. and gasia mentioned it a bit ago, he loved the seventies bands, journey, air supply, and styx. i think that's probably a

picture there we saw a moment ago of him smiling. sounds like that's what he was always like, a guy with a big smile on his face. >> i think we just saw a family picture. actually, i think we're going to choose to sit back and watch this with you. we'll watch the memorial and come back on the other side. . ♪ [ bag pipes playing ] ♪
