holding their young son at the podium and the daughter of slain police officer lauren butch baker. both speaking at a heartbreaking memorial service today. thousands of police officers along with dignitaries and regular folks all paused to pay tribute to those fallen officers. good evening everyone i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. there were tears and even jokes about the two police officers who were shot and killed on duty. we have live coverage of today's service. robert handa and maureen naylor are live. we begin with robert who watched the service alongside them, robert. >> reporter: well, it took some time but the san jose arena here has emptied out. but it will be some time before anyone that was here and in those watches some where else will forget what happened here today. a child leaving a memorial for a mother he will not see again

was one of many emotionally wrenching moments that took place today as thousands gathered for a final send off for santa cruz officers baker and butler. >> joaquin would you like to say hi. >> hi. >> reporter: butler's partner peter woo and their son joaquin spoke. >> i whispered to her that i would teach her about boys and that they would always know what a great person their mom was. >> reporter: about 6,000 law enforcement officers saluted as the memorial began at noon. james durbin sang the song arms wide open at the family's request. baker's daughter standing alongside her brother adam a santa cruz police officer read

a message from a father's day card she wrote as a young girl eight years ago. >> if i had to pick one word for you it would be integrity. because though it's difficult for you to sometimes stand against the norm you do. >> reporter: the positive sentiments were echoed by many people during and after the ceremony. police estimate 8,500 people attended today's memorial here inside hp pavilion. robert handa, ktvu. there were many moving images from today's memorial. but perhaps none more poignant than officer baker's son

joaquin wearing her police cap. >> reporter: the gray skies and light rain seem only fitting tonight. in a sign the community is moving on. the flags here at hp pavilion have been raised after an emotional goodbye. it was quite a sight to see hundreds of law enforcement lining up in front of hp pavilion in san jose. but then in unison each saluted the departing caskets under a waving american flag. after musicians on top of a fire truck played taps, seven helicopter flew over the crowd in a missing man formation. lines of officers marched into the service they wish never had to happen. >> this is such a tragedy, the fall out from this, the implications are yet to be realized. >> reporter: on the sidewalk a single salute greeted a procession of arriving santa cruz police officers. of the thousands in attendance

a husband and wife who used to work with santa cruz police along with their twin daughters. >> there wasn't a question. we knew we were coming and my daughters didn't go to school today because it was important for them to see it too. >> reporter: this pregnant wife of an officer also brought her children. >> they have to get through it and say our goodbyes. >> reporter: this 14-year-old mother is a santa cruz police detective and was working the day before the deadly shooting. >> if it was a day earlier it would have been his mom. one day earlier. >> reporter: and right now a private event is happening for san jose and santa cruz. many of us the people today left saying that they were going to live their life with honor. hundreds of people also gathered in santa cruz to watch a live video feed of the service. about 300 mourners watched the

somber ceremony on a big screen set up in downtown santa cruz. >> the real people, with real families that do real work. >> the sacrifices that law enforcement make and their families make. now every time i see a car and i see an officer it really brings that home. >> reporter: most of those who came to the kaiser arena were those who live in the santa cruz area. many said they wanted to pay their respects closer to home. hundreds of every day people took time out of their day to pay respects for the fallen officers. many said they were touched by their sacrifice. john fowler talked to those per pay their respects. >> reporter: people crowded roadways to greet this impressive procession. >> i felt like crying, it was very touching. everybody came out today and lined up. >> reporter: 150 people hushed and subdued. >> the way i see honoring the

lives of those lost, it's to be here in person. >> reporter: pj hails put up ribbons. >> i was married to an officer in san jose for 20 something years. i just feel so compelled to do something. >> reporter: scott fey brought the nation's flag. >> i've been a paramedic, firefighter close to 25 years now. my brother and sister we're all tight in law enforcement and firefighters. it's a hard day today. >> the support we get in this town is incredible. the support for these officers who gave up their lives for these people. yeah, it almost brings tears to my eyes. >> to honor two people who sound like they were wonderful human beings that served our community for so many years. >> when i see something happen like this, i mean it's just,

it's unbelievable. it just brings tears to your eyes, what's happened to our community. >> reporter: many people tell us this refocused their respect for law enforcement. a convey of police cruisers headed south and a ktvu camera was there on the industrial overpass when one group passed by. there were also similar scenes pretty much all over the bay area today. thousands of people also line the streets of santa cruz as the funeral procession passed by there. as hundreds of vehicles drove through the city, spectators stood in silence. some saluting the officers caskets. we spoke with two people who say their idealic city lost something today the two police officers were killed. >> innocence, definitely. we lost that. and it's kind of been coming for a few year, we've seen it, we've been watching it and it's

sad. >> i think the community is quite shocked that something this horrible could happen here. >> reporter: officers butler and baker are the first police officers killed in the line of duty in the history of the santa cruz police department. there is a lot more on the fallen officers on ktv you can. -- ktvu.com. we have a slide show of today's service as well as more on the lives of officers butler and baker. authoritys in capitola say three departments picked today, a day when many officers were at that memorial to rob a bank. police say three armed men wearing masks robbed the bank of the west branch at about 11:30 this morning. a catipola police officer said while they are operating with a smaller staff today, they had enough officers to respond to the needs of the community. >> i think they took advantage

of the law enforcement community trying to honor our fallen brother and sister. >> i think it's a little bit more than just a coincidence that they picked today. >> the three robbers got away with an undisclosed amount of money. now to development news in san francisco, police are at the scene of a shooting involving two locations. one is south of market, the other is in the city's financial district. news chopper 2s is over the scene not long after shots rang out just after 4:00. a man in his 30s was shot in the torso. the driver was not hurt and drove to market and davis where he then flagged some help. the victim was taken to san francisco general with life threatening injuries. police say the shooter who took off running is still at large. san jose police say an elderly man who was reported missing early last month was found stabbed to death in his apartment today. we first told you last week how

police were looking for 69-year- old stanley jacobson who suffered from dementia. jacobson's family found his body just before noon today. a suspect has been arrested but there is no other information at this time. coming up, a quick break from the rain but more wet weather is on its way. i'm using storm tracker 2 isolates spots where the rain is falling tonight. >> but first, a cyclists fatal crash with a pedestrian. what was said at today's hearing that brought the suspect to tears. >> now the embassadors of the golden gate bridge have been given pink slips. >> it's like they almost don't care. >> the personal side to the bridge's technological overhaul.

approved legislation to to a program aimed at getting illegal weapons off the street. san francisco's senator mark leno wrote the bill that would increase the number of state agents looking for those prohibited from the law. that would include anyone convicted of a felony or violent misdemeanor. anyone with a restraining order against them. the bill now goes to the assembly for consideration. >> no more calls. >> no more calls in the middle of the night. >> that was san francisco mayor ed lee along with dozens of other mayors all featureed in a public -- mayor lee is a member of the group mayors against illegal guns which released the psa. 900 u.s. mayors from 45 states are members of that group. they want limits on military style assault weapons and high capacity magazines and they want gun trafficking classified as a federal crime. golden gate bridge officials set a firm date today

for when they will no longer be human toll takers. by next month they will be the only bridge in the nation to collect fees only electronically. tom vacar is live at the bridge to tell us what dozens of toll takers now take. >> reporter: the triumph of automation has always led to the disappearance of long term toll takers. toll takers no longer needed. >> all of us are upset. you have those moments when you see someone crying. >> reporter: the disappointment to this army veteran was no doubt painful. >> it's very hard to read the letter. it's like they almost don't care. >> reporter: nine out 28 terminated toll takers are long

fliers for a few days saying that it's coming soon. we know soon now means the 27th of this month. tom vacar, ktvu news. students at uc berkeley held a unique protest today on behalf of unified contract employees. students held a wake to draw attention to the the workers rights. the union representing campus workers and food servers is negotiating a new contract with the system. in san francisco, police are trying to figure out why a truck careened right into a house in the city's eureka valley neighborhood. happened just before 10 10 -- 10:00 this morning. the driver apparently told police that the brakes stopped working right before the truck

slammed into the house. fortunately no one was inside at the time of the accident. a judge ordered a bicyclists to stand trial in the death of a 27-year-old pedestrian. chris buteri cried as prosecutors recounted what happened last march. they say suchi wee was crossing market when bucari ran a red light at a high rate of speed. bucari faces a charge of vehicle manslaughter. he's scheduled to be arranged on march 26. investigators say today that the lion that fatally mauled a young woman escaped its cage moments before that attack. diana hanson was killed yesterday in fresno. she was attacked by a male lion named couscous. they also said hanson was killed when the lion got out of its cage and entered the

cleaning enclosure. a reward now stands at $20,000 in the burglary case in which a richmond police officer's two dogs were poisoned. oakland based pet food express is matching the richmond police officer's $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspect's capture and conviction. burglars broke into the officers home last friday. and before getting away with five guns, they poisoned the officers pet labrador retriever and also a police canine dog in a backyard kennel. the family's labrador died from the poisoning, the police dog is still recovering. lottery officials are looking for the person who bought a winning ticket. that gas station will receive $165,000 for selling that winning ticket. the lucky ticketholder has 180 days to claim the prize. and the drawing was last night the winning numbers are

one, two, three, 22, 34, and the mega number is eight. a little bit of shower active táeu out there right now. kind of messing with the afternoon a bit. you have the live camera shot. that's obviously the new bridge on the right. older bridge on the left and taillights, red lights are going into the city. but there are some wet roadways especially in the south bay where the rain has been coming down, it's not heavy. that's where we're getting reported throughout the area. so it's been real light. but it's enough to slow things down. it's been kind of moist out there out in the sunset district. out by lake merced. it's been wet, the ground has been wet. over in the peninsula, over by alvizo it's kind of wet. this area has been getting a little more than everybody else. you can see the darker green. out in the san jose area. that rain has been a little bit more consistent. but again it's all really kind of high based that the clouds

are dynamics basically. the strength of this storm is still offshore. so what we're seeing is these light areas spinning on shore. that's the way it's going to go tonight. when i say spinning on shore, they're coming back up. tonight at 9:00, here it comes it's actually moving this way this band of clouds. it kind of dissipates at midnight. here we go into your friday and it clears out. it looks like it's going to clear out in terms of cloud cover as well. you're going to start to see clouds rebound on friday back into the upper 50s and low 60s. so this last 24 hours of rain kind of dry because we've had moisture in the area but it's not producing significant rain. so clouds and shower tonight. that low goes off. this high stays here. temperatures as you head into your bay area weekend they're back in the 60s and low 70s as i mentioned. so it's going to be a really nice 72 hour period coming up. again i wish we were getting some rain right now because it would be nice.
