good morning, everyone and welcome to mornings on 2 it's sunday, march 10th i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. it's darker outside thanks to daylight saving time and it's chillier out there. let's go to rosemary orozco. >> we do have a nice turn around. as you mentioned it's still dark but i do see the break of dawn and sun will rise in the next half hour. patchy fog along the coastline. colder in some areas. will be mostly sunny through today. temperatures will warm up over yesterday's highs. extended forecast is dry and warm. i'll show you these numbers coming up. we are following breaking news out of downtown oakland. police are investigating a fatal shooting. christien kafton is live for us. >> reporter: let me tell you this is a large crime scene. it's spread out over five blocks here in downtown

oakland. right now alameda county coroners office is on scene here just about to load the victim into a van to remove him from this scene. there was a very expensive sports car just about seven or eight minutes ago that expensive sports car was towed out of the area. we have video of what the scene looked like earlier. police say they responded to the scene around 3:00 this morning and found the dead man in the street with numerous shell casings around him. and there is another scene just about a block away with more shell casings there and a half block away again that very expensive sports car. it looked like ans aton martin vintage. that sports car is certainly part of this investigation. we saw investigators looking over it with flashlight and trying to get a little bit more information about that. as mike said a couple moments ago, this shooting happened

when flight clubs were letting out. they have two suspects that sped away. no word on their identity. again this homicide happening in downtown oakland at about 3:00 this morning just as the clubs were letting out. there is some connection to a very expensive sports car. we will continue to monitor this story and get more details for you throughout the morning. one nor note this is a densely populated area. there is a lot of witnesses in the area. we'll try to speak to those witnesses and get eyewitness or earwitness accounts about what happened earlier. for you know we -- for now we are live in oakland. deputies spent hours at a crash that killed three people. officers were first called at 812. one car t-boned another. a fourth person was take ton the hospital with life threatening injuries. the driver of the other vehicle

wasn't hurt. the cause of the wreck still under investigation. a woke vehicle crash in oakland left a mini van on its side. the crash trapped a couple of people inside the mini van but firefighters were able to pull them out. several passengers were taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. witnesses say a speeding car couldn't make the turn and slammed into that mini van that briefly stopped. police say three people jumped out of the suspects car and ran from the scene. it's a story you will only see on 2. a second person in jail in connection to a case of stolen christmas presents in contra costa county. sheriffs deputies arrested a martinez man at his house last night. acting on a tip authorities say they recovered items taken in a couple recent burglaries including one last month at a martinez warehouse. a charity that feeds and gives to the elderly and poor stored

donations in that warehouse. >> what do you think about finding the stuff? >> i think it's awesome. it's not big stuff. it's a few hundred dollars worth of stuff but it's still getting the people that are behind us. >> the first suspect was arrested friday. they stole $60,000 worth of goods from the charity. a prayer vigil is going to be held today far missing oakland woman. family members say erika was last seen at a store on 34th and telegraph avenues. she lost her husband to cancer last year and may suffer from depression. a $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to her safe return. the vigil is scheduled at 1:00 this afternoon. there is information about a missing brentwood teen. he has been found safe and in good health. family members were concerned

about his disappearance because he does not speak. there is new information in the shooting of two santa cruz police officers. they are allowing four firefighters on scene that day to talk about what happened. 43-year-old firefighter clayton ran from the hail of gunfire but shopped to shield a woman who was taking out the trash but tripped and fell. he told the woman to keep calm and stay down. he called it the worst day in his 20 years as an emergency responder. there are new pictures showing the memorial per session for the is slain police officers. chp captured these images by a camera mounted on his motorcycle. people as you can see lining up there on the overpasses of the procession route holding signs and flags. also in santa cruz the highway patrol says it was forced to use a taser on a man in an act of self-defense. it happened while officers were trying to break up a fight on pacific avenue yesterday

morning. one man lunged toward them and they felt threatened. the man was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest. three others were arrested for fighting in public. a good samaritan is being called a hero for helping to save a police officer. joe says he saw the officer struggling with the suspect and decided to get involved when he saw the man reach for the officers gun. that is when joe said he grabbed the man's hand and slammed it on the ground. police say his actions likely saved the officers life. >> i knew i had to do something. because somebody is going to end up dead here. cops are not going to be coming home to his wife or children or whatever and i just jumped out and jumped on him. >> police say the suspect who was struggling with the officer is a known gang member who had just been spotted trying to break into a car. if you haven't already be sure to set your clock forward an hour. dale saving time started at 2:00 this morning.

tables have been set up for the cardinals. to insure privacy welcome tropic jamming devices have been added to block all communication systems. analysts say this will be the first time a pope is chosen after the social media explosion. facebook was launched just months before benedict became pope in 2005. but now many cardinals have their own facebook pages and twitter sites. while the conclave itself will be held in secret, analysts say the catholic church is embracing modern communication and technology. >> if a person is involved in tweeting and facebook, it shows that they are trying to use these new methods of communication to get the message out. that is a plus. it's not a big enough plus to swing an election. >> a popular website currently is adopt www.adoptacardinal.org. people are given specific name to pray for a cardinal. so many responses that the

justice department civil rights division as his next labor secretary. analysts say the announcement could come as soon as tomorrow. thomas perez has led the civil rights division since dyne and previously served as labor secretary. if confirmed he would replace hill da who resigned in january. hundreds of gay right supporters held a kiss in this weekend at a sacramento area mall. >> everyone is equal. it doesn't matter who you are. >> participates said they are showing their support for a gay couple who was asked to leave the mall after sharing a kiss. mall officials defended the security guard who asked the couple to leave but they have since apologized. >> westfield has again made efforts to correct the action but i hope everyone person that heard the story will stand up and fight for equality. >> mall officials say employees will under go sensitivity training and say all groups should feel welcome at the roseville galleria.

introduced by republican senator could have unintended consequences. the bill would allow nevada higher education system to carry guns on campus if they have a concealed weapons permit and notify administrators. the chief says he fears the proposal could lead to guns inside campus buildings including dorms. a new survey raises questions about hue well school districts are prepared for possible cases of child abuse. less than of of those said they offered annual training to employees on how to recognize sexual or physical abuse. the report also finds that districts have a difficult time dealing with vague compliance codes and laws. the oakland police departments new compliance director starts his first day on the job tomorrow. thomas frazier is a baltimore police department who served 28 years with the san jose police department. he will have broad powers including the authority to have chief howard jordan fired. a federal judge named him to

the position to make sure the department fully complies with court order reforms. a salary for south bay residents could cause prices to go up. it will jump from $8 an hour to $10 beginning tomorrow. san jose downtown association says some city businesses raised wages months ago. the group says it campaigned to encouraged people to shop in those stores is also working but some merchants say they may have to raise prices or cut staff to meet the pay increase. fremont city leaders are considering a plan for a downtown area. officials hope to create a downtown that stretches along sixth block of capitol avenue. that will include city hall, the county courthouse, and washington and kizer hospitals. it will be anchored by the fremont hub and gateway plaza shopping centers. the city plans to spend $15 million acquiring the property but hopes most of the project is actually going to be done by

private developers. it seems a lot of people were off to see the wizard of oz this weekend. disney's oz. the great and powerful. the movie is a prequill to the old classic. last weeks number one movie jack the giant slayer is expected to come in second. hallly wood is get -- hollywood is getting credit for boosting the market. they added 236,000 jobs in february. according to the labor department 21,000 of those jobs came from the film industry. that is a 5% employment boost in motion picture and sound jobs in just the last month. happening today the big prom giveaway in two bay area cities to make the dreams of hundreds of high school girls come true. >> and it's a surprise that could bring tears to your eyes.

bay area nonprofit is helping teenage girls celebrate a nonprofit. the princess project is giving away prom dresses today. thousands of dresses in all colors and sizes are on display in san francisco. any girl with a valid high school id can shop for a dress while supplies last. more than 1,000 prom dresses will also be given out today to high school girls in san jose. in addition to the dresses, high school students can also receive free dry cleaning, hair, and makeup sessions and discounts on tuxedo rentals. it starts at 9:00 a.m. in san jose. dozens of people turned out for a blood drive in fremont to honor todd young.

young was shot and wounded while trying to arrest an attempted murder suspect in oakland back in 2010. he under went ten surgeries and needed multiple blood transfusions. he is now on -- >> they are heros every day in and out. and then they come here to save other people's lives on top of it. it's just a miracle. >> more than 100 units of blood were collected at the event. in new york state an air force sergeant returning from afghanistan surprised his daughter at school. a man shot multiple times was found on a downtown oakland street. i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. the shooting happened around 3:00 this morning. police have been out there for hours gathering evidence. christien kafton is also there. he joins us live with more information on the shooting including the expensetive sports car found at the scene.

>> reporter: we were here at 7:00. you saw that before there was an extensive police presence behind me. since then the police presence has broken down. the victim in this case was found in that area over there near the crosswalk and over here as you swing around you can see just about a half block away a very expensive sports car was found right here in this driveway. and there were shell casings all in this area here. we have video we shot about 35 minutes ago oftest tin martin. that is the sports car in this case being towed away from the area. it appears the car may have belonged to the victim. it had front end damage but we did not see any bullet holes in the car. police say they responded to the scene at about 3:00 this morning and found the dead man in the street with several shell casings around him. a half block away as we showed you that very expensive sports car. we are hearing the shooting happened at about 3:00 this morning. just as nearby clubs were letting out. there is the potential for

several victims in this case. police told us there are two suspects that sped away from the scene. at this point there is no description of the suspects or the vehicle they sped away in. coming back to our live shot you may have been able to see this is a very densely populated area. there is a lot of condos this area. there is possibility of witnesses. there may have been witnesses from those clubs. we'll continue to monitor the situation out here and contact the neighbors. for now we are live here in oakland christien kafton ktvu channel 2 news. a man pulled out a gun and fired at a party bus after being told he could not get on it. police say the group who rented the bus buzz leeing the bar at 14th and webster street when a man tried to board the vehicle. when he was told he was not welcome the man opened fire. police are still looking for

the gunman. chp is investigating a deadly accident that shut down traffic over night. it happened north of the washington boulevard exit. officers say one person was transported to the hospital but did not survive. we are learning more about a homicide investigation in hayward. investigators are looking into claims that a workplace dispute may be behind the shooting. police found the victim in a small camper behind the home. the homeowner says the victim recently moved from mexico and working two jobs at local restaurants. and he recently fought with someone at work. >> he had a problem last week about a fight with somebody at work. but we don't know who they were. >> investigators are still trying to confirm if a workplace dispute played a role in that shooting. the attack happened yesterday morning at an apartment on civic center

drive. the two men got in some sort of disatreatment. that argue -- some sort of disagreement. that argument then turned violent. his roommate was arrested on suspicion of assault with deadly weapon. tomorrow marks one year of the disappearance of morgan hill teenager. antlion georgia see yeah tower rose has been charged with abducting is her. some congressional democrats want to raise taxes on guns. the proposal would add an extra 10% on firearm purchases. supporters say that would generate tins of millions of dollars. the money would fund gun buy backs. at least half a dozen states including california are considering similar legislation. but gun right supporters say it's unfair to ask them to pay

the leading agent turn over notes from a six month probe. but the head of the safety board says turning over his findings to a grand jury would have a chilling effect on future investigations. a federal indictment could result in millions of dollars of indictment. berkeley restaurant will start taking reservations tomorrow. the restaurant has canceled existing reservations through that date. it will start accepting new ones as we said tomorrow. the fire on friday damaged the buildings exterior and the porch and part of the dining room. san francisco has paid out millions of dollars in damages to victims of water main breaks. last month a major break flooded 73 homes. the chronicle reports there have been 209 water main breaks in about as many as busted

sewage lines in the last two years. the utilities commission blames part of the problem on century old water lines. all the concrete to the new eastern span of the bay bridge is in place. crews filled the section that was about the length of the football field. it took a couple of hours to set. project spokesman says that project is sturdy enough. >> bridges are not designed to withstand a certain size earthquake. what we say is this bridge is designed to withstand the strongest possible ground motions involved with a seismic event. >> the new eastern span is schedule to open september 3rd. construction first ban back in 2002. we have a clear look at the bay bridge. there is a live picture of it. cal tran says there is still a large amount of work to get done before the opening. crews must coat and paint the main cable.

to mornings on 2 i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. rosemary also here tracking your forecast. good morning, to you. >> good morning, to you. we have another nice day if store this morning. a chilly start. patchy fog along the coastline here. afternoon highs will be bumped up a few degrees over yesterday's. i will show you those highs. take a look at that patchy fog and of course your current temperatures coming up. we are following developing news out of downtown oakland where one man is dead after an over night shooting. christien kafton is live to explain how this expensive sports car may factor into this investigation. christien. >> reporter: first we spoke with oakland police about 15 minutes ago. they tell me they were called to the scene here with reports of multiple gunshot wounds and a victim down. let's walk you through the scene. we will show you where this unfolded. oakland police were out here an hour ago and since then they have cleared the scene. the victim was found in that area. claudine you talked about that

expensive sports car. as we swing to the lift you can see that expensive sports car was found just about a half block away in this driveway right here. police seem to think that was certainly connected to this case. they spent a great deal of time looking over that car. we can tell you in the area there was numerous shell casings. that car has since been towed. we did get video of that car. it was an astin martin. a very high end sports car. at this point it appears the car may have belonged to the victim. it had front end damage. as we looked at the vehicle we did not see any bullet holes in the car. police responded about 3:00 and saw the dead man in the street with several shell casings around him. and a half block away that very expensive sports car. there was another scene nearby where they also found more shell casings. certainly very complex and large investigation. we are hearing that the shooting happened just has nearby clubs were letting out.

now in that conversation i had with police 15 minutes ago, they say there is nothing to indicate that shooting had anything to do with any of the nearby clubs. but it certainly tells me there is witnesses in this case that there would have been poem people out walking the streets as the clubs let out. police tell me there are two suspects in this case and the suspects took off in a car. at this point they didn't offer any details about who that suspect may have been. we will continue to follow up on that story and bring you the latest developments. for now we are live in oakland christien kafton. over night news daily city police spent hours at the scene of a crash that killed three people. officers responded to the 100 block of east moore avenue just before 8:15 last night. police say one vehicle t-boned another. the driver in fact vehicle that actually hit the car wasn't hurt but there were four people in the other vehicle that got

hit. three were pronounced dead at the scene. a fourth was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. the cause of that crash is still under investigation. firefighters had to rescue two people inside a mini van. it happened near 880 and 29th avenue exit. speeding car could not make a turn and slammed right into that mini van which had briefly stopped near the intersection. a couple of people were trapped inside the mini van. several passengers from that van were take ton the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. three people in the suspects car ran from the scene. oakland police say a man pulled out a gun and fired at a party bus after being told he couldn't get on. police say the group who rented the bus was leaving a bar at 14th and webster streets. but when he was told he wasn't welcome, the man opened fire from the curb. no one on the bus was hit. police are still looking for

the gunman. the oakland police department new complines director starts his first day on the job tomorrow. thomas frazier is a former baltimore commissioner. frazier will have broad powers in the department including the authority to have chief howard jordan fired. a federal judge named him to the position to make sure the department fully complies with court order reforms. a prayer vigil will be held for a missing oakland woman. family members say erika was last seen at a store on 34th and telegraph avenue. she lost her husband from cancer last year and may suffer from depression. a $1,000 reward is being offered leading to more safe -- leading to her safe return. there is good news to report about a missing brentwood teen. family members say colton who is autistic has been safe and in good health. he was reported missing friday after going for a bike ride. family members were concerned

santa cruz police officers were killed. the fire department is allowing four fighters on scene to talk about what happened. the centennial reports clayton ran from the hail of gunfire but stopped to shield a woman who was taking out the trash but tripped and fell. o.k. don told the woman to keep calm and stay down. he calls it the worst day in 20 years as an emergency responder. there are new pictures showing the memorial procession for the slain officers. chp officer captured these images by a camera mounted on his motorcycle. also in santa cruz the highway patrol says it was forced to use a taser on a man in an act of self-defense. it happened while officers were trying to break up a fight on pacific avenue yesterday morning. they say one man lunged toward them and they felt threatened.

afghan president hamid karzai. the two will meet privately. it's about 4:15 in the afternoon in vatican city. church officials are finishing up work in preparation for tuesday's conclave. crews have already installed the chimney at the sistine chapel that will vent the smoke from burning ballots. benches and tables have been set up inside the chapel for the 115 cardinals that will elect the next pope to insure privacy electronic jamming devices have been installed. this will be the first time the pope is chosen after the social media explosion. facebook was launched just months before pope was elected -- many cardinal electors have their facebook pages and twitter pages while the conclave itself will be held in secret. analysts say the catholic church is embracing modern communication and technology. >> if a person is involved in tweeting and facebook it shows that they are trying to use

on campus. the chief says the bill introduced last week by a republican senator could have unintended consequences. the bill would allow nevada higher education teachers to carry guns on campus if they have a concealed weapons permit and notify administrators. the chief says he fears the proposal could lead to guns inside campus buildings including dorms. some congressional democrats want to raise taxes on guns. the proposal would add an extra 10% on firearms purchases. supporters say that would generate tens of millions of dollars. the money would fund gun buy backs. at least half a dozen states including california are considering similar legislation. but gun right supporters say it's unfair to ask them to pay additional taxes to fund programs addressing a problem that they say stems from multiple causes. a new survey raises questions about how well school districts are prepared for

child abuse cases. they asked 94 local school districts about the issue and 78 responded. less than of of those say they offer annual tripping to employees on how -- training to employees on how to recognize and report sexual abuse. there was a special sendoff in newtown, connecticut for dozens of cyclists honoring victims of the deadly shooting in the massacre there. riders took off a 400-mile trip from newtown to washington, d.c.. they will ride for four days to honor the 26 lives lost and urged congress to pass stricter fun laws. a good samaritan is being called a hero for helping to save a police officer. he goes by the name of joe. joe says he saw the officer struggling with the suspect and decided to get involved when the man started reaching for the officers gun. that is when joe said he grabbed the man's hand and slammed it on the gun.

the search is on this morning for two suspects who opened fire in downtown oakland killing a man. good morning, and welcome to morning ons 2 it's sunday march 10th. >> i'm mike mibach. that shooting happened around 3:00 this morning just as a nightclub was letting out. they found a man's body near a sidewalk and an expensive sports car nearby that was later towed. police have not confirmed the connection between the victim and the sports car. chp is investigating a deadly accident near free monday that shut down traffic over night. it happened shortly after 12:30 this morning. the chp says at least one person was taken to the hospital where they died. roanoke park police arrested a man who slashed his roommate with a machete. it happened in his apartment on civic center drive.

there was a special send off in newtown connecticut for dozens of cyclists honoring the victims of the massacre. riders took off on a 400 mile trip that will take them from newtown to washington d.c. they will ride for 4 theys to honor the -- days to honor the 26 lives lost. and a good samaritan in stock ton is being called a hero for helping to save a police officer. e he goes by joe, and joses he saw the officer struggling with a suspect and decided to get involved when the man started reaching for the officers gun. that's when joe said he grabbed the man's hand and slammed it right on the ground. police say his actions likely saved the officer's life. >> i knew i had to do something because somebody's going to end up dead or cop's not going to be coming home to his wife or children or whatever and i jumped out and jumped on him. >> the suspect who was struggling with the officer a

gunfire erupts near a nightclub in downtown oakland overnight. what investigators found at the scene, as they a try to piece together what happened in the city's latest homicide. good morning, welcome to mornings on 2. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. new this morning, the search is on for two people who opened fire in downtown oakland killing a man. the shooting happened around 3:00 a.m. around 89th and clay as a -- ninth and clay, police say they found a man's body on a sidewalk and an expensive sports car was nearby. may have collided with a nearby sedan. police have not confirmed the connection between the victim and the sports car: we are learning more this morning about a homicide investigation in hayward, investigators are looking into claims a workplace dispute may be behind the shooting of an immigrant. they found the victim in a

camper. the victim had recently moved from mexico and was working two jobs at restaurants. they told us he had recently fought with someone at work. >> he had a problem last week at work, but we don't really know who they were. >> investigators are still trying to confirm if a workplace dispute played a role in that shooting. in overnight news, firefighters rescued two people trapped inside a mini van after a crash in oakland. it happened near interstate 880 and 29th avenue. witnesses say a speeding car couldn't make a turn and slammed into a mini van that had briefly stopped near the intersection. several passengers were taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. three people in the suspect's car ran from the scene. the chp is investigating a deadly accident on northbound 680 near fremont that shut down traffic overnight. it happened shortly before 12:30 this morning north of the washington boulevard exit. the chp says at least one

person was taken to the hospital where they later died. oakland police say a man pulled out a gun and fired at a party bus after being told he couldn't get on. the group renting the bus was leaving a bar when a man tried to board the vehicle. when he was told he was not welcome he opened fired from the curb. no one was hit who was on the bus and police are are looking for the gunman. the sanctuary where a lion killed a volunteer reopens in a half hour. couscous killed 24-year-old dianna hanson. they believe he slipped out of the cage and attacked hanson as she was cleaning an enclosure. a deputy had to shoot and kill the lion after efforts o to get it away from hanson failed. and it's now time to return to work and focus on the other cats in the facility. some congressional democrats want to raise taxes on guns.

on -- valet e hoe and said it doesn't challenge the idea of people who believe in the right to own guns. the police chief at university of reno is fighting back against a bill that would allow school employees to carry guns on campus. the bill introduced last week by a republican senator could have unintended consequences. it would allow nevada's higher education teachers to carry guns on campus if they have a concealed weapons permit. the chief fears the proposal could lead to guns inside campus buildings including dorms. 7 people were killed in a house fire in kentucky including five young are children and a pregnant woman. neighbors called 911 after noticing smoke coming from the home yesterday morning, but firefighters just could not get to the people in time inside. family members say the victims were a man and his pregnant girlfriend, their three children and two other children who spent the night.

from a 6 month probe but the head of a safety board says turning his findings over would have a chilling effect on future investigations. a federal indictment could result in prison time for some officials. san francisco has paid out millions of dollars to victims of water main breaks. it flooded 23 homes. according to the chronicle, there have been 209 water main breaks and about as many busted sewage lines in the past two years. the city's tab for all of that, $5.4 million. the san francisco public utilities commission blames part of the problem on century old water license. a boost in salary for some south bay residents could cause price ares to go up at retail stories. tomorrow a coalition of labor groups will join a business association at a news conference to discuss the minimum wage increase in san jose. it's going to jump from $8 an hour to $10 starting tomorrow.

the san jose downtown association says some city businesses raised wages months ago. the group says a campaign to encourage people to shop in the stores is working and some say they may have to raise prices or cut staff to meet the new pay increases. hundreds of job from california to the east coast. met life has announced it is relocating 2600 jobs from five eastern states to california to north carolina. they say the move will benefit the company because of a new tax break approved in that state. that combined with other incentives will give them up to one hundred million dollars. employees from california have been given the opportunity to relocate to the north carolina offices. all the concrete to the new eastern span of the bay bridge is now in place. crews filled the section that is about the length of three football field, the project spokesperson says that section is sturdy and flexible enough to deal with changing traffic
