about it. it's all ahead on the ktvu channel 2 morning news. good morning, it's monday, march 11th i'm brian flores. >> rosemary orozco you say it's going to be nice since we lost that hour. >> yeah. a pleasant weekend. this morning we are joined by cool temperatures once again. i'm detecting a little bit of patchy fog out there his morning. along the coast and parts of the sonoma valley floor. but we have another beautiful one in store for you. mostly sunny skies. a minor warmup in some cases. i do expect the coast will remain in the 60s for today. and our extended forecast looks dry and warm. i'll show you when i think our temperatures will peek and i'll have a break down of our monday morning forecast coming up. traffic is doing well on

the freeway. a nice looking drive on 80 westbound. it is 4:29 let's go back to the tech. sal, thank you. in overnight news bart police are investigating a disturbing incident at the montgomery street station. is a man was riding in an elevator when he heard a scream. tara moriarty is at the station with more. >> reporter: this is a gruesome homicide. basically it appears a man was sleeping on top of an elevator when he was killed. it happened around 9:30. san francisco police and fire crews responded to reports of a person stuck in an elevator shaft. the witness told police he was going from the muni level to the concourse area when he hard a crunching sound and a man let out a yelp. it appears a man had been sleeping there.

>> a bart police sergeant investigating further found bedding and personal belongings on top of the elevator car which leads us to believe the deceased may have been occupying that space. >> reporter: police say the man fell between the car and the shaft and was crushed. right now they are trying to figure out how he got there and how long he had been there. obviously getting to the body was tricky. live from san francisco i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. we're following developing news out of afghanistan where there are reports an afghan police officer has killed two u.s. troops. according to reports the afghan police officer opened fire inside a police station while u.s. forces were visit visiting. the shooting sparked a fire fight that ended with two u.s. troops and three afghan policemen dead. the incident comes a day after

a deadline for u.s. special forces to withdraw. chuck hagel who is on a trip to afghanistan he told the president that the u.s. is not working with the taliban. >> i told the president it was not true. that the united states was unilaterally working with the taliban in traying to negotiate anything. >> over the weekend president karzai made a nationally televised speech saying the u.s. is teaming up with the taliban to launch attacks. claiming violence will get worse if foreign troops leave. time is 4:31. is a pedestrian died earlier this morning after getting hit by a car. it happened in the eastbound lanes of highway 4 near new port drive shortly before 12:30 this morning. all lanes were shut down during the investigation. police are still trying to figure out what led up to the crash. the mother of a missing oakland woman is asking the community for help to find her

daughter. erika hasn't been seen or heard from in four days. she was last spotted thursday morning jogging on 34th and telegraph streets. yesterday members of her family and church held a prayer vigil and posted fliers in the area. >> it's my daughter. she's been gone too long. you know. it frightens me. >> reporter: she is 5'3", 220 pounds and last seen wearing a gray sweat suit and red shoes. time is 4:32. minimum wage goes up to $10 an hour. workers will make $2 more per hour. voters approved the pay hike with measure d last november. the ordnance applies to most san jose employers. some say the increase will hurt them and either cut backs for workers or higher prices for customers. labor and community aders will kick off a new campaign

with a business association at 10:00 this morning. contra costa county and moraga fire districts will talk about building a new facility. there is now a proposal to sell that station and another in orinda to finance and purchase the construction of a new one. there is no merger to share a new facility but talks between the two agencies start today. new this morning america's cup contractor almost $460,000 in back wages to workers. the final list of jobs that require contractor to pay a prevailing wage wasn't decided until after the 2012 world series events were held. that means workers were paid $9 instead. time is 4:34. and it is monday.

hopefully traffic won't be so bad this morning. sal, how are you doing? >> i'm doing well brian and maureen thank you very much. monday, kind of hard for some people. let's try to make it easy for some people. it looks pretty good as you drive through on 80 westbound. getting out to the mccarthur maze. pretty nice looking drive. it's unclear whether or not some of that road work that was there is completely gone. i can't really tell but the traffic is moving along pretty well. i think it is. i'm going to confirm that for you by the next report. westbound bay bridge this traffic is moving along very nicely getting into san francisco. and if you are driving this afternoon or this morning on northbound 280 at the 880 interchange that traffic is moving along very nicely. let's go to rosemary. how are you this morning? remember we set our clocks forward yesterday. that means if you will be driving out this morning sun will rise around 7:30 rather

than 6:30 like we saw on friday. some of us will be starting the morning drive in the dark. let me show you what is happening here. ridge of high pressure remains in place. so think will be our flow for the next few days. that north, northwest everyone northeast at times will continue to drive our temperatures up. meanwhile when we see the ridge like this we know the storm track will stay to the north. we're not seeing any rain for the week ahead unfortunately. but outside of that we do have mild, warm temperatures on the way for your afternoon. right now the winds are generally light. coming in from the east, napa, livermore reporting calm conditions. fairfield on easterly breeze. i need to point you to sfo. you notice this is a westerly breeze. even though most of us will be under that north, northeast flow right another the coastline a localized sea breeze will continue. i think the coast will remain in the 60s while many of us will be warming well into the low to mid 70s by tuesday and wednesday. in addition to that some of the

moist specific air is pouring in. i'm seeing fog along the coastline and fog develop along the sonoma county valley. which means santa rosa checking in on you am quarter mile visibility in some cases. take it easy getting out the door. 37 right now in santa rosa. 43 in concord. wide spread mid 40s around the bay. and afternoon highs for today 73 santa rosa. 65 san francisco. a lot like yesterday. slightly warmer in some areas. 71 for pleasanton. 71 san jose. there is your extended forecast and the warmup continues all the way into wednesday. wednesday is going to be the warmest day as we get into the weekend we do remain dry. partly cloudy skies. numbers will trail off just a little bit. upper 60s and low 70s for saturday and sunday. back to the desk. there is new information in the murder case of an olympic star charged with killing his girlfriend. lawyers for oscar pistorius is asking a south african court for changes. they argue the double amputee is a flight risk and should be

able to travel outside of south africa. he mistakenly shot and killed his girlfriend in her home thinking she was an intruder. happening now cardinals from around the world are meets for the last time before the start of tomorrow's conclave to pick a new pope. this is video this morning new of the cardinals arriving for the preconclave meetings at the vatican. 115 cardinals will vote for a new pope but it seem there is is no clear front runner at this point. yesterday archbishop of new york hinted a decision could come sooner rather than later. >> a week ago we would have said wow, we have a lot of work to do. now you see a sense of resignation and trust and faith. >> the vatican hopes to have a new hope before march 24th. here's how tomorrow's process will work. the cardinals will gather inside the sistine chapel. no cameras or journalists will be allowed in the conclave. the first vote will happen in

wide spread mid 30s and 40s at this hour. your time is 4:42. today marks two years since a devastating earthquake and tsunami killed thousands of people in japan. memorial services in tokyo coincided with the exact time the earthquake hit. the quake was followed by a massive tsunami and ultimate meltdown of a nuclear power plan. people are still without homes today. north korea is making new threats as the u.s. and south korea stage military drills. north korea says it's canceling the 1953 disagreement that ended the korean war. the country cut off a red cross hot line with south korea and threatening to launch a nuclear attack on america. but north korea is not believed to reach america with a nuclear large. president obama has three trips to capitol hill scheduled to meet with republicans. the president is still trying to reach an agreement with

republicans to avert $85 billion in automatic spending cuts. last week the president invited republicans out to dinner and lunch at the white house. >> i think the president is tremendously sincere. i don't think this is a political change in tactic. i think they would like to solve the problems of the country and it would be to his benefit and everyone's benefit if he did that. >> i think these meetings are not to say -- i think it is let's get some things done together. >> even though the sequester cuts kicked on march 1st. time is 4:44. house budget committee paul ryan plans to introduce legislation this week to repeal health care reform law. otherwise known as obama care. >> by repealing obama care which haven't occurred yet we are preventing an explosion of a program that is already failing. so we're saying don't grow this

program through obama care because it doesn't work. >> congressman ryan will also propose overhauling medicare. the republicans plan would give payments to seniors to pie insurance or contribute to medicare. critics fear the payments would not be adequate to cover costs and seniors would be stuck with the short fall. nonprofits is offer free eye care. it will be parked at 660 rom bard street. this morning lawmakers and airlines are calling on the tsa to reverse its decision to allow small knives on planes. passengers will be allowed to carry small pocket knives starting on april 25th. the tsa says the change will allow screeners to focus on high priority threats such as

explosives. >> you don't have to have a ph.d in physics. you don't have to be albert einstein to know these items are dangerous. this can kill someone. >> delta's chief executive has written a letter to the head of the tsa asking the agency to reverse the rule. a woman was killed by an african lion last week the sanctuary is back open this week. her mother wrote a letter yesterday saying that her daughter would have wanted the sanctuary to reopen and continue its mission to help big cats. employees at cat haven observed a moment of silence in honor of her memory. today the oakland zoo plans to introduce its newest edition. three meerkat pups. they are almost six weeks old. and increase the exhibition to eight. the litter is the first

successful one among the meerkats in more than a year. that is because meerkat pups are fragile. meerkats are part of the monogoose family. normally this would be 3:46 with the time change. sal, how are you adjusting to the time change? >> i'm really still asleep. this is the virtual sal on auto pilot. we are doing pretty well. traffic is doing well on the east shore freeway. we watched that. that is one of the earliest commutes we have. it's not a bad drive at all. westbound traffic does look good. it will be interesting to see if the darker commute since the time has changed will effect the slow downs. we'll see if that happens. also the morning commute looks good westbound bay bridge. no major problems as you drive through. if you are driving into the city it's fine. this is northbound 280 getting up to the 17 interchange and the traffic does look good. at 4:47 let's go to rosemary.

ridge of high pressure is stretching over the bay area. that means we will continue to warm in most cases with light winds in place. i do want to point out right along the coastline that sea breeze will kick up at times. and that is helping to well bring in some of that moist pacific air. hence we have patchy fog this morning. along the coastline i see a little bit of fog down the valley floor. santa rosa. now novato. petaluma reporting fog. you may be dealing with that as you get out the door. in the valley it will burn off fairly quickly. along the coastline it could be patchy in nature for the entire day. the rest of us going to be warming up. especially our inland spots and this warming trend will last all the way into wednesday. we will peak on wednesday with the warmest temps. our extended forecast looks dry. the ridge of high pressure in place. you can see that storm track well to the north. you may see a few clouds roll by from time to time. we are now into wednesday but

you don't see any rain. it keeps deflecting toward the north. thursday comes along. we could be covered in high clouds but we will not see any rain. friday dry. saturday dry. and into sunday morning we're dry. temperatures right now 43- degrees in concord. 37 in napa. 37 for santa rosa. wide spread 40s around the bay. a cool start out there. a lot like where we have been. most of us within a few degrees of yesterday morning. 70 degrees in vallejo. 67 in berkeley. wide spread upper 60s to low 70s. 71 san jose. ful this afternoon in santa cruz. your extended forecast as we talked about dry, mild to warm. the warmest day on wednesday. how about your weekend in view? partly cloudy skies. up to 60 degrees saturday and sunday. redwood city could follow the footsteps of many bay area cities and improve a single usest use plastic bag ban. the city council is set to vote tonight on that ordnance. if approved the vote would go

into ban april 25th. and stop distribution by all retailers expect restaurants and nonprofits. businesses would be required to charge 10 cents a bag. the ftc is cracking down on text message scam artists who are trying to -- scammers are sending text messages that offer free gift cards to major retailers in exchange for personal information. spam text messages are illegal and now the ftc is carjacking 29 individuals and companies with sending more than 180 million unwanted text messages. the scam offer is nothing but free. >> 13 different offers just to receive this free gift card. they include offers to apply for credit. offers to sign up for a free trial offers of various products. >> the personal information from those subscriptions is then sold to a third party without the victim's knowledge. the ftc wants the companies responsible to reimburse

they were dancing in san francisco. yesterday the crowds enjoyed the last firey flames shooting from this mechanical octopus. the event was the beginning of the fifth annual sunday streets. the sculpture was originally created in humboldt county. it's the last time the mechanical octopus will wow the crowds before it gets broken down. >> we'll probably it again some day. we'll make it again for somebody. we have this new idea and want to go forward on it. i think we will do something better next year. >> hints as to what next years sculpture will be. expect we are told it will be made out of junk and breathes fire. we are learning more about a deadly shooting in old oakland. it happened around 3:00 yesterday just as clubs were letting out. police are investigating whether the 37-year-old victim

may have gotten into a fight with the suspects before the shooting. the victim may have been daveing an astin martin seen a block away from the scene. officers say the vehicle lostoff the road, enzoning into a swamp yesterday morning. two people were able to escape the car and called 911. the driver has been identified as 19-year-old alexias kay sin. they are also trying to figure out if alcohol played a role in the crash. an assault rifle was stolen from an unmarked police car earlier this month. trunks of unmarked police vehicles can no longer be opened from the inside with trunk releases. police say that is what happened when someone smashed a window of an unmarked police car and stole an ar15 assault rifle. the rifle was found two days later at a home in oakland. quickly approaching 5:00.

let's take another look at traffic with sal. sal, it's looking pretty good? >> it's looking pretty good out there. brian and maureen. traffic looks good on northbound 101. for example if you are driving from 280 up to the downtown area. not a bad commute. and if you are driving down 101 to the airport like wise it's a nice looking drive. it will be interesting to see if that one guy did not change his clock and shows up to work late thinking oh man. you know it's going to happen somewhere. the traffic is moving along pretty well on the south bay on northbound 101. 17 and 85. 4:55. someone who is here on time rosemary orozco. good morning, to you. yes, i'm wondering is there somebody out there that may have spent the entire sunday with the wrong time? patchy fog out there this morning. i'm seeing it along the coast. i'm seeing it in the valleys. please be careful out there.

mid 30s to mid to upper 40s in the forecast. temperatures very similar to where we have been the last couple of mornings. mild weather even warm for this afternoon. the lunchtime weather upper 50s to low 60s. and by this afternoon take a look around. 73 in sonoma. 72 in novato. sausalito you are checking in with 66 this afternoon. 70 in oakland. go inland east bay 71 for danville. 71 for livermore. down into the south bay santa clara valley. if you can sneak away today santa cruz just may be the place to be. 68 with mostly sunny skies. we do have patchy fog along the coastline. i do expect it will stick around at least through the morning hours and burn away for the afternoon. 63 daly city today. mid 60s for san francisco. here is a look at your extended forecast. temperatures continuing to climb and as our afternoon highs become warmer, the over night lows become more comfortable as well. get into the low 40s.
