bit of patchy fog. temperatures slipping back into the 30s to 40s once again this morning. we'll have a look at your current temperatures, talk more about that warmup and in the extended forecast the dry weather continues. i'll have a look all the way into next weekend coming up. good morning, sal. good morning, rosemary. northbound 101 approaching the 80 split that traffic looks good. no major problems if you are driving to the downtown area. northbound 280 traffic that looks good getting up to highway 17. now backed to desk. time is 6:01. we are following a break where police are in facing a homicide. s ast was the first reporter on the scene. he joins us live with new information about the victim. alex. >> reporter: well, good morning. a police lieutenant out here says the victim in this case was a 30-year-old hispanic man. he has not been identified just yet. a neighbor who was leaving f work earlier this morning found a man's body in front of her house which is just one block up from where we are. right off of capitol avenue which is right off of capitol

expressway. the man's body found right in the middle of the street. you can see a number of streets in this area blocked off as police piece together this killing. the 911 call came in at 4:30 this morning. when officers showed up a couple minutes later they found a man with a fun 1409 wind to his-- with a gunshot wound to huisaches. police believe the man may live in this area. but it's unknown why he was killed or targeted. police said they got another call about a disturbance or argument in this neighborhood around 2:00 this morning. possibly connected to this homicide. >> i believe we have one person saying they heard a disturbance. a verbal fight between two people be we're not sure on that. really early in the investigation. when homicide folks get out here we'll get a closer picture of what happened. >> reporter: police sent the

last neighborhood. so far there is no information on the shooter that police are look for. the homicide unit is expected to arrive at this crime scene shortly and obviously they are begin to gather evidence and begin that process. this area should be locked down. the streets should be blocked off for a number of hours here. san jose police are investigating what is the city's ninth homicide of the year. live this morning in san jose alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:03. over night news a tragic story at a san francisco bart station. a man was killed apparently as he slept inside a bart elevator shaft. tara moriarty is there now with more rob why the police think he may have been there for awhile. what do you know tara? >> reporter: we are standing over the montgomery bart station where we believe the horrific accident happened. as we take a look bemind me there is an elevator there. that is not the elevator in question. it is located down the

escalator here. we walked down a couple minutes ago and saw the elevator boarded up. this all unfolded just after 9:30 last night. police and fire crews responded to reports of a person stuck in san elevator shaft. the witness tell police he was going from the muni level up a floor when he heard the most awful sound. >> as the elevator moved i heard a noise and a scream and the elevator stalled before it reached the con v. level. and that is how he was aware that somebody was trapped outside of the elevator car. >> reporter: police did find bedding and personal belongings on top of the elevator car and thigh believe the man was homeless and had been sleeping there and slipped off into the shaft and crushed. there is a video camera that we noticed right outside the elevator that might provide authorities with clues on how he got in and how long he had been there. coming up we'll tell you what a homeless man we spoke to this morning had to say about this

gruesome accident. live from san francisco i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. your time is 6:05. today the minimum wage in san jose goes up to $10 an hour. starting today workers will make $2 more an hour than the state mandated $8 hourly pay. the voters arrived the pay hike with measure d last november. that applies to most san jose employers. some business owners say the increase will help them. it will either mean cut backs for workers or higher prices for customers. labor and community leaders who push for that minimum wage will be kicking off a new campaign with a local business association. meantime poverty is going up in silicon valley. even in the middle of the technology boom. according to the silicon valley index food stamp use is at a ten year high. and homelessness that has gone up 20% in two years. analysts say the high cost of living adds to the number of

people in poverty. the home price in silicon valley is 550,000. rents average just under $2,000 a month for a two bedroom apartment. time 6:06. san francisco home hopes a new cruise terminal will bring more business. christien kafton is live. good morning, christien. >> reporter: those mega ships would be pull into a state of the art terminal. you can see how it has been developing here at pier 27. you can see the work that has been completed here. if you haven't been down to the waterfront repeatly, you will be surprised -- recently, you will be surprised how big this terminal is. pier 27 is in the hands of america's cup.

but when the yacht races are over the new terminal will be state of the art. one of the major benefits of this new terminal will be the fact that big cruise liners will be able to plug into shore power when they are here rather than use their own engines while in port. that is certainly a benefit to the environment in the area. now the move signals a renewed emphasis on cruise ships in the bay area and cruise lines are listening. princess cruise line has pledged to base a cruise ship year round here and it's called the grand princess. the grand princess will call san francisco her home and set sail for alaska, hawaii, and mexico. that is all expected to start in may of this year. this is the view passengers will be treated to. take a look at the live look. they will be getting off that cruise line and look agent the city's iconic skyline. for now ships are still using pier 35 just a few hundred yards to the north. i just checked online and saw there are cruises already set for hawaii, mexico, and alaska

temperatures. especially for our inland areas. it's a weak wind. that is allowing at times our on shore breeze and sea breeze to actually push back just a little bit. enough so that we have fog creeping in along the coastline and again seeing fog in some of our inland areas. santa roe s petaluma, novato i'm talking about you. that ridge is going to hold in place it looks like for the entire week ahead. our insufficient rainfall totals thus far becoming more dim. we're looking a the 80% for the average in santa rosa. 78% in san francisco. san jose 73% of normal. let's hope we get some rain real soon. but i'll show you that extended forecast coming up in a couple minutes. for tide at this hour -- for today at this hour 40s around the bay. mild noon hour. upper 50s low 60s. and then for the afternoon low 60s at the coast with a little bit of patchy fog. mostly sunny elsewhere.

time now 6:14. developing news from afghanistan on two separate deadly shootings today involving american troops. as kyla campbell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom at least seven people are dead including american troops. kyla. >> reporter: dave, we'll start with the first attack which happened at an afghan police station and left two u.s. troops dead. officials tell the associated press somebody wearing an afghan police officer uniform opened fire inside a police station in wardak providence where american troops were visiting. that killed two u.s. troops and three afghan policemen. it's not known if the gunman was an officer or someone dressed as one.

this follows a string of insider attacks against coalition and afghan forces and comes after defense secretary chuck hagel met with afghan president hamid karzai yesterday. hagel was trying to smooth things over. >> we did discuss those comments. i told the president it was not true. >> reporter: and there was that second deadly shooting in afghanistan outside the capitol of kabul which is 75 miles from the other attack. troops opened fire on a truck. they say the truck was approaching a u.s. convoy and a driver did not follow instructions. the u.s. troops opened fire and killed two afghan civilians in that truck. i did call the department of defense but so far they are not releasing any further details about either incident. live in washington kyla campbell ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:16. happening now cardinals from

around the world are meeting to pick a new pope. we are video of the cardinals arriving for a preconclave meeting at the vatican. 115 cardinals will vote for a new pope. it seem there is is no clear front runner at this point. yesterday archbishop timothy dolan hinted a decision could come sooner rather than later. >> a week ago we would have said wove a lot of work to do. now you see a sense of resignation and trust and faith. >> the vatican hopes to have a new pope but march 24th to lead a week of holy services. no cameras or reporters will be allowed inside the conclave. the first vote will take place in the afternoon. after a morning mass. they will vote four times a day until they reach a two-thirds majority. a white house -- a white smoke signal means a new pope has been chosen but if there is black smoke that means no decision has been reached. time now 6:17.

the central california big cat sanctuary where that woman was killed by an african lion last week it's back open this morning. yesterday visitors walked around the cat haven near fresno. that is where a 24-year-old intern was killed last week. the intern's mother wrote a letter saying her daughter would have wanted the sanctuary to reopen and continue its mission to help big cats. employees at cat haven held a moment of silence in her honor. early this morning a pedestrian died after being hit by a car in unincorporated discovery bay. it happened in the eastbound lanes of highway 4. right near new port drive. it happened about 12:30 this morning. all the lanes were shut down during the police investigation. and they are still trying to find out what led up to that crash. time is 6:18. the san francisco giants world series trophy tour is taking another victory lap in the bay area this week. trophy from the giants 2010 and 2012 titles will pass through

good morning, and welcome back. there is new information in the murder case of an olympic star charged with killing his girlfriend. lawyers want a south african court to make changes in his bail restrictions. they argue the double amputee athlete is not a flight risk and should be able to travel outside of south africa. he mistakenly shot and killed his girlfriend in his home last month thinking she was an intruder. while prosecutors say he intentionally killed her after an argument. a man is charged with stealing a diaper bag from a foster mother. they arrested daniel ripper friday morning after reviewing surveillance video of the theft. the foster mother was at san francisco hall of justice when the bag was stolen.

she is caring for a baby that was abandoned last december. the baby's birth mother was high on cocaine at the time. time now 6:25. bart says it is to blame for most of the delays commuters deal with. now according to information collected by the san francisco chronicle, most of the delays because the bart system needs an upbraid. common problems, old trains, computer problems, and mechanical failures. they are responsible for 25% of those long delays. other reasons medical emergencies, fights, and vandalism. the chronicle checked out data from delays 15 minutes or longer between november 2011 to october 2012. time is 6:26. a new study finds ancient mummies had clog arteries. ct scans of 137 mummies shows heart disease has been a problem for 4,000 years. a third of the mummies examined

in the street near her house on murtha drive right off of capitol avenue. the 911 call came into police just about 4:30 and when officers got here a few minutes later they found this man with a gunshot wound to his chest. he was pronounced dead at the scene. officers began to knock on doors nearby searching for any witnesses to this killing. police believe this man may live in this area but at least at this point it's unclear why he was killed. >> we have officers believe they may have had contact with him in the past. we believe he might live her. we have to figure that out. he has not been identified yet. >> reporter: also interesting to point out a little over two hours before this homicide was reported to police, officers got a call about a disturbance or a fight in this area. that was reported by neighbors at about 2:00 in the morning. police are investigating the possibility that original disturbance call may have been connected to the homicide.

homicide investigators have been called in here and they will be piecing together this crime scene, gathering evidence here. a number of streets blocked off in this area. and at least at this point we are being told that police don't have any information on the shooter they are searching for this morning as we show you right now here actually as we speak. we have the investigative unit here. the san jose police truck pulling in right now. so obviously they are set up shop. they will be here for quite some time gathering evidence. but capitol expressway by the way is uneffected in terms of traffic. we'll be out here and bring new any updates. for now we are live in san jose alex savidge. time is 6:33. over night news bart police are investigating the death of a man killed inside an elevator shaft. it happened at the montgomery street station when a passenger tried to use the elevator. ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty has more on why the

victim was on top of the elevator car and why it might not be that unusual. tara. >> reporter: we spoke to a homeless man this morning. he said that he wasn't sure if he knew the victim. he said it wasn't unusual for homeless people to find secluded places to sleep. if you take a look behind me here that is the area we're talking about it. he said that if someone wanted to find the way on top of an elevator there is a lot of nooks and crannies and doors you can sneak through. we did walk down into the montgomery bart station and saw the elevator boarded up. it's not in service until further notice. this all unfolded just after 9:30 last night when police and fire crews responded to reports of a person stuck in an elevator shaft. the witness told police he was going from the mine knee level off the floor when he heard the most awful noise a crunching sound and a man scream. >> this is the first incident like this that i'm aware of.

>> reporter: so what was the victim doing there? police found bedding and personal belongings on top of the elevator car. they do believe the man was homeless and sleeping there and slipped off into the shaft and crashed. we noticed the video camera above the elevator that might provide clues how he got in and how long he had been there. police have not released a name but if we get new new information about -- any new information about this gruesome act we'll pass it along to you. time is 6:34. president obama has three trips to capitol hill schedule to resolve the on going budget battle. the president is still trying to reach an agreement with republicans to avert $85 million in spending cuts. >> i think the president is

tremendously unfair-- fair. i think he wants to solve the problems of the country. >> i think these meetings are not something to say i will do this with you now and that later. i think it is let's get some things done together. >> if the president and congress can't come to an agreement many of the cuts can be averted before they take effect. even the popular blue angels are being hit by the sequester cuts. budget cuts require the navy to cancel all blue angel performances from april 1st to september 30th. so far the navy has only canceled performances in april hoping that congress passes a spending bill avoiding the full extent of the cuts. at this point the appearance at fleet week is not canceled. a new report says contractors for the america's cup yacht race owe about $460,000 in back pay to workers. the san francisco chronical

reports last minute negotiations over the america's cup world series may be to blame. the final list of jobs to pay a prevailing wage that wasn't decided until after the 2012 world series events held. some workers who somehow have be paid $64 an hour were paid $9 an hour. the prevailing wage is a union hourly rate. news crews ship term 23458 may make san francisco a major porticoes nation. coming up we'll tell you how the city is trying to attract the mega ships and how local businesses could be effected. time is 6:36. there is issues on the roads. i want to get to sal. it looks like lanes are blocked. >> yeah it looks like a lot of closure, a lot of traffic on highway 1 because of a major closure at half-moon bay. highway 1 is closed. in fact 92 is closed all the

way up to upper skyline. this is huge because this will put more people on highway 1 as well. if you drive toward pacifica you will see a lot of people going your way. this is major injury crash. the person was taken to stanford but they are doing an investigation. the chp don't know when it will reopen. 92 is out of commission until they tell us it's open again. let's move along and take a look at the bay bridge. that is about a 15-20 minute delay at the toll plaza. and no problems on the bridge. and if you are driving in san jose we're getting a little bit of slowing in downtown and there goes cal train. steve usually loves this but this morning we are doing it for rosemary orozco. we're having her watch the cal train in our picture. >> i'd have to say i like it too. good morning, to you. how about a view of the bay bridge where our morning drive

is on the move. no trouble getting across this bridge. you can see visibility pretty good. we have seen the fog develop in some spots. poor visibility over parts of the north bay. santa rosa, petaluma, novato. it's a little bit of moisture creeping in. you're seeing it in parts of the north bay. first a live look here at storm tracker two. and no rain in sight. ridge of high pressure is all we see here. notices motion and the clock wise flow right along that ridge that will continue through our week ahead. we are going to remain dry. there is a bit of rain up over washington for the week ahead. that is where the storm track will stay. we are going be dry. temperatures will continue to climb at least over the next couple of days with the warmest day i'm thinking probably wednesday. let's take a look at the winds very calm but coming in from the north fairfield. northeast in oakland. calm in napa. but this flow again going to be north, northwest, northeast at times. look at san francisco and sfo.

good morning. we have a full highway closure. highway 92 is closed between

upper skyline and highway 1 because of a major injury crash. that means one way in and out of half-moon bay is not available. and what people do is they get out to highway 1. if you drive from the half-moon bay area you have goat out using highway 1 up to pacifica and daly city. that means more people are going to be doing that. some people will head south and use 84 which is slightly longer. 92 is not available. the chp tells us they don't know when they will reopen. stay with ktvu. we'll keep an eye on your alter thats as well. it will mean major traffic delays in the area. time is 6:45. here's a quick look at some of the top stories we're following for you right now. ktvu was first on the scene of this homicide investigation in east san jose early this morning. police say they found the body of a 30-year-old latino man in south capitol avenue around 4:25 this morning. he had been shot in the chest. still no word of any suspects

in the case. over night bart police found the body of a man inside of an elevator shaft at the montgomery street bart station. they think he was sleeping on top of the elevator car and crushed to death. another passenger used that elevator. he was crushed between the car and wall. minimum wage goes up today today in san jose. it used to be $8 and now it's $10 an hour. new law effects employers that maintain a facility in the city or who are subject to san jose business tax. time is 6:46. happening now in about 15 minutes family of a missing oakland woman will be going through neighbors with fliers hoping to find her. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, maureen. 7:00 today friends and family of 31-year-old erika is expected to gather here at the bart station and fan out to different stations including

bus stations and hand out fliers in the hopes in someone knows something in her disappearance. she was last seen about four days ago when she went out for a run on 34th and telegraphs streets. family and friends held a vigil for her. and her husband recently passed away when she was looking into rebuilding her life. she started exercising consistently and looking forward to catch a flight to dallas to spend time with her brother. when she left that morning around 7:00 she never came back. >> it looked like she was going to go out for a run. it was exercising. it was a new thing for her to exercise and run almost daily. she usually went with a friend but this time she went by herself. but it wasn't the first time she had been by herself. >> reporter: the missing woman's mother glove are torres also said her grandson called and said erika never came back. she owned and operated a computer software business with

family. authorities believe that she was last seen wearing gray sweat pants a gray sweatshirt and red shoes. they also believe the oakland police department isn't doing enough to help find her. coming up we hope to talk to family and friends of maskaleris that story coming up. live in oakland i'm brian flores. time now 6:48. lawmakers and airlines are calling on the tsa to reverse their decision to allow small knives on planes. passengers will be allowed to carry small pocket knives starting april 25th. the tsa says the change will allow screeners to focus on high priority threats such as explosives. but lawmakers say this is not the time to reduce vigilance at security check points. >> i don't have to have a ph.d in physics you don't have to be albert einstein to know these items are dangerous. >> they have also written a

letter to the head of the tsa to reduce the policy. police have a new policy after an assault rifle was stolen out of a police car. the trunks of unmarked police cars can no longer be opened from the inside with trunk releases. police say that is what happened when they smashed a window after an unmarked police car and stole an ar15 assault rifle. that rifle was recovered two days later at a home in oakland. tonight march madness begins for bay area basketball fans. they are getting ready for a wcc show down. the st. mary's gales face the gonzaga bulldogs. the winner gets an automatic win for the tournament. they are playing gonzaga for the 15th time in five seasons. this is the fifth straight year these two teams have met. it's ten minutes before
