oncoming truck and crashed into it head on. the jetta driver was killed. the driver of the truck suffered non-life suffering injuring. police arrested a man in connection with a weekend traffic accident that killed three people. police arrested denis pereirade macedo on suspicion of three counts of homicide. he was found uninjured near the crash site saturday night. investigators say his car broad sided the victim's car. killing the driver and her two sons. a 4th person a girlfriend of the victim remains in the hospital. an investigation is underway to determine how a homeless man gained access to the top of a elevator before he was crashed to death. ktvu's jade hernandez is in san francisco at the montgomery street station where the

accident happened. jade? >> that is right. the incident happened at the station, we are live tonight and bart doesn't know who the man was but he was in a place he shouldn't have been and it cost him his life. >> reporter: trains ran on schedule tonight but last night a man heard a horrible noise. police discovered a homeless man on top of the elevator crushed. >> dangerous. unusual, upsetting, disturbing. >> reporter: the homeless usually seek shelter to get away from the cold. one example was depicted in the movie the pursuit of happiness. barted today this tragedy is not -- bart said today this

shoplifter accused of stealing from the mall. the man took items from the mall last night. police say they arrested the man but still haven't released his name. the police chief said crime is on the rise. he said the number of robberies, burglaries were up in 2012. also last year there was one homicide and three rapes. identity theft is also increasing. he hopes to fill open positions in the police department this year and he called on residents to start neighborhood crime watches. the family of a woman said they have new hope. new tonight at 6:00 p.m. ktvu's allie rasmus spoke to the mother and she is live on 34 and telegraph with the video showing the woman where she was last seen. >> reporter: that video comes

from the surveillance cameras mounted here in oakland. they captured video of her walking by on thursday morning. >> reporter: this surveillance video shows her on a morning walk near 34th and telegraph. it brings her mother to tears. >> it is hard. very hard. she looked happy. >> reporter: thursday morning was the last time they saw her. since then they launched a search effort handing out flyers, talking to residents and reaching out to commuters at the bart station. some local businesses helped out by sharing surveillance video. >> extremely worried. wondering how we can keep our community safe. >> search of her computer shows she looked up information on san francisco parks before she

disappeared. >> feel positive they know what they are doing. >> reporter: police wouldn't talk on camera about the case but provided this update saying investigators received information she was seen in west oakland after she was reported missing. she is convinced her daughter did not leave voluntarily. >> she wouldn't do this knowing people are looking for her. it is a parent's worse nightmare. not knowing. >> reporter: friends and family said she had been through a difficult year, lost her husband to cancer but friends said she seemed update lately. they will continue their search efforts tomorrow. live, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. prosecutors dropped the charges against a teacher who was accused of kicking and with holding food from students. she was charged with 9 counts

of abuse. now the district attorney said the accusers have back pedaled. after serving 14 years in prison for sex crimes a wrongfully convicted man is now free. the court over turned the conviction of johnny williams last friday after noon dna evidence proved his innocence. the northern california innocence project and the california dna project at santa clara university school of law worked together to get the conviction over turned and clear johnny williams' name. minimum wage workers got a raise to $10 an hour. it is the result of a measure back in november that was the result of a campaign of san jose state students. some business owners say they may have to raise prices but one owner who instituted the raise a month early said it

protesters rallied in downtown san francisco today demander manding the -- demanding the closure of all nuclear power plants. >> two years ago today a 9.0 earthquake shook japan that left 400,000 homeless. the tsunami forced the power plant into melt down. we have to stop it. enough is enough. >> the japanese government committed $270 billion for recovery efforts. bills would add prison time for patrol violaters challenging california's effort to reduce prison over crowding. courts ordered the state to

>> reporter: researchers said they studied 60,000 wimmen for 12 years and found -- women for 12 years. >> we think aspirin is reducing inflammation and the growth of cancer cells. >> reporter: she says other drugs had no such effect. >> there must be something different about aspirin effecting a pathway the others are not. >> reporter: aspirin was previous link to lower risk of other cancers but this is the first to show reduction in skin cancer. >> hopefully we will rally more researchers to study aspirin for cancer prevention but it is not a clinical trial and isn't proof yet. >> reporter: stanford is -- stanford is testing their anti-

founder. california's agricultural industry is facing a labor shortage. they say more than 70% of agricultural producers expect a worker shortage starting this spring. aging farm workers say their children are not interested in field work. the wet weather in the bay area last week came in the form of new snow in the sierra. operators say 26 inches of new snow fell last week and that was great news for skiers and snowboarders. snow making equipment and cold temperatures helped keep snow on the slopes despite a dry january and february. >> it has been a dry january and february. we have fog out there now. looks more like spring than winter. you see the fog out there.
