right now traffic is doing well around the bay area. this is a look at the san mateo bridge, looking good headed to the highrise, no major problems. the morning commute is looking good on the nimitz freeway, 880 northbound and southbound. 4:29, let's go back to the desk. happening now, the cardinals are scheduled to be resting after just finishing a final mass before conclave. we have more from rome with the process of electing the head of the catholic church. >> reporter: cardinals preparing to embark on the most important day of their spiritual lives, they will enter the papal conclave, elect a leader and set the tone for the future of the catholic church, beginning have a traditional votive mass.

preparations for the papal conclave have been underway since benedict xvi announced he was retiring. all eyes will be on the chimney. black smoke signals an unsuccessful vote. white smoke means there's a new pope. >> it's unlikely that there would be white smoke on the first ballot. >> a contender must get 2/3 of the vote to be elected pontiff. once elected he will choose a name and be vested in papal garments. >> a new thing added this year is when the cardinals and holy father leave the sistine chapel, the first stop is the paulene chapel. >> red carpets are hanging at st.peters's, where the newly elected pope will be announced to the world for the first time. >> a special mass is being held at st. mary's in san francisco

to celebrate the start of conclave which officially starts at 9:00 our time. the archbishop of san francisco is requesting the service, mass begins at 8 a.m. it's being officiated by the archbishop. we're following developing news out of europe, we're learning europe's third busiest airport in frankfurt is shut down because of heavy snow. it could re-open this morning so if you're planning on flying to europe you might want to check your flight status before heading to the airport. a pleasantton high school will have a meeting about an incident where a 2-year-old was tied up. alex, good morning. >> reporter: administrators are appalled, police launched a criminal investigation into center point christian preschool after a complaint against a former teacher here. she's accused of tieing up a 2- year-old girl who apparently refused to take a nap. a complaint filed with the department of social services says the teacher, former

teacher, bound the child's wrists and ankles with tape and took a photo of the girl. the incident came to light much later when the teacher showed off the picture at a social gathering to several staff members of the school. one of them though happened to be the mother of the child in the photo. the allegation was reported to police on march 5, it's unclear exactly when the incident took place. the school will be holding a meeting for parents, that will happen tonight, to answer questions they may have about what took place. meantime in light of the investigation, center point will cancel its preschool classes for five days beginning friday so teachers and staff members can undergo additional training to make sure they are up to speed on the proper procedures. again, this preschool facing a criminal investigation after a disturbing accusation against a former teacher. live in pleasanton, channel 2

news. a house fire led to the discovery of a marijuana grow operation. firefighters had to use a chainsaw to cut through the walls of the home to put the fire out. it started at 11:30 last night on marion avenue. firefighters say it was just being used to grow pot, no one was living in the house. the cause is being investigated. a family's search for a missing relative is expanding after police release new information. 31-year-old erica maskalaris has not been seen since thursday. surveillance shows her on a walk that morning. yesterday it was announced she was seen in west oakland after being reported missing. the family plans to shift and widen the search. the man accused of killing three family members in daly city is due in court this afternoon. he was driving his girlfriend, mother and younger brother to the movies, police say their

car had just left the driveway of their daly city home when it was hit by dennis macedas car. the 28-year-old man was fleeing the scene of a hit and run. three were killed, the girlfriend is in critical condition. >> he was loved by a lot of people. really sad. but at least he's with his mom and brother. >> maceo faces homicide and hit and run charges. five u.s. troops have been killed in southern afghanistan, a helicopter went down outside kandahar city where there was no enemy activity. the cause is under investigation. earlier in the day two u.s. troops were killed, making yesterday the deadliest day for u.s. forces this year. a plane went down at 8:45

yesterday morning, 50 miles west of spokane, three people on board were killed, the bodies are expected to be recovered today. navy officials say the plane crashed during a routine training mission. 4:35. later this morning, nasa scientists will reveal what they have learned from the first sample taken from mars. last month curiosity drilled a hole in a flat rock on the surface of the planet. that revealed an unexpected gray interior to the rock, which was in contrast to the red-orange surface of mars. >> very interesting. 4:35. let's take a first look at our traffic with sal. >> our roads are doing well. there's not a lot of people on the road. eastshore freeway, the traffic is moving well on 80 westbound to the macarthur maze. we're off to a good start on 580, and at the toll plaza it's a nice looking drive, a lane that's closed but it's so early, it's not really causing

a delay, they should be opening that soon. the morning commute is moving along well on northbound 280 off to highway 17. let's go to rosemary. three hours into the official sunrise, a live look at the satellite/radar, ridge of high pressure still in place for today. that means temperatures will warm up even more into the afternoon, away from the coast. you can see just a few high clouds passing through. you can't see the fog that has developed over and along the coastline as well as some inland areas. a little bit of a broader view here, you can see the ridge still keeping that storm track well to the north. that's going to be the case, unfortunately, through the end of the week. here is a look at the forecast model for the clouds, by 4:00 you notice we're dealing with. i do expect it will become more widespread. right now it's draining into the bay, could stick around into 9:00, 10:00. about sunrise, people are starting to head out the door,

the morning commute is thick and the fog will be pretty much at its worst. i'll show you when i expect that to burn off coming up in just a little bit. right now 47 degrees in concord, 50 antioch, mid-40s in napa, 39 fairfield, 40's around the bay, 50 oakland. we're mild out there. we're a few degrees warmer in some cases than 24 hours, some of us by 8 or 10 degrees. the afternoon highs for today are going to feel pretty good. 72 san rafael, 70 oakland and berkley 66 san francisco, the patchy fog will stick along the coast for the first half of the day, temperatures remain in the 60s. 63 in half moon bay, 73 at santa cruz, a mild day for you. san jose you're looking at 73. the extended forecast, the warming trend continues into wednesday, with wednesday being the warmest day, even looking at the possibility of near record temperatures for this time of year. thursday, friday, notice we begin a bit of a cooling trend,

it's minimal but we'll continue into the weekend, partly cloudy skies, upper 60s to low 70s in the forecast for the afternoons. back to the desk. >> thanks, rosemary. san jose city council will talk about plans for dealing with homeless camps. the largest encampment was cleared out friday with 60 others in san jose. city leaders are proposing ideas to reduce the number of people living in parks along creeks, and on streets. they hope to increase enforcement, provide affordable housing and help nonprofits move people indoors. caltrans plans to install special fencing to keep homeless people from under a freeway in san francisco. crews cleared a camp on king street near 280 in mission day. city workers offered to take them to a church for assistance and screenings. the fence is expected to cost $300,000. the san francisco symphony is looking to hit a high note with a federal mediator. today the musicians resume

accept outside funding for secret service operations. this morning a senate committee again takes up gun control measures. the senate judiciary committee will debate a bill calling for universal background checks for gun buyers. two weeks ago the committee heard emotional testimony in support of more stringent gun laws from a man whose 6-year- old son died in the connecticut school shooting. the committee is considering dianne feinstein's assault weapons ban. >> the head of the t.s.a. will defend a decision to allow small knives on airplanes next month. he will testify thursday. pilots, flight attendants, and even the union representing t.s.a. screeners criticized the decision. he said the change in policy would free t.s.a. screeners to look for more serious threats such as explosives. we're learning details about how much the jerry sandusky scandal could cost penn state. penn state released a document

detailing the agreement with louis freeh to investigate the scandal. it's a review the school says cost them $8.1 million. since the end of december the school said total costs associate the with the scandal topped $41 million. just hours before set to take effect, a new york supreme court judge struck down new york city's ban on large sugary drinks. the ruling means super-sized sodas, sweetened tea and other beverages can be sold in restaurants, theaters and other venues. a report shows america's school buildings are in bad shape. schools across the country are in such bad shape it would cost a quarter trillion dollars to return them to their original conditions. it would cost twice that much to get them up to date. the center for green schools said it's more difficult for students to learn when classroom roofs leak or it's

flow tends to be north- northwest, even northeast at times. it's that little micro wind that we're seeing, and continues to bring us the fog. where are we seeing it this morning? along the coastline, half moon bay reporting visibility between 2 and 4 miles, i'm seeing it slip into the bay this morning over parts of the north bay, into the valley. marin, as well as sonoma county. petaluma, you're the hot spot, reduced visibility. it doesn't dissipate, it will become more widespread right around sunrise, close to 7:30 this morning. by 11:00 it's mixed up well. we could see maybe a few patches inside the bay along the coastline, holding on until noon and for the second half of the day it will clear out like we saw yesterday. 50degrees in oakland, 45 napa, 49 san francisco. warmer this morning in many areas, so chances are you're going to notice this as you step outside your door, not as

cold. 70degrees for heyward, 66 san francisco. 73 in mountain view, budging numbers up just a bit from yesterday afternoon, 73 san jose, mid-70's in fairfield and santa rosa. the extended forecast showing you we're going warmer in time for wednesday. even nearing 80 degrees in some warmer spots. the temperatures are expected to trail thursday, friday, into the weekend. we remain dry, temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s, still above average for this time of year but the 80 degrees, i'll show you who i expect may hit that coming up. a man is lucky to be alive after getting caught in an avalanche. the whole thing was caught on video, it happened at a resort in boseman, montana. he was carried for a thousand feet. he could feel the snow building up before he was pushed into a tree, luckily, friends saw it happened and were able to dig him out. he suffered a dislocated shoulder.

man plans to talk about his life today. the california dna project tested the victim's t-shirt for dna and profit williams did not commit the crime. >> he's exhibited great strength and continues to now, he's committed to rebuilding his life. >> williams' case is the northern california innocence project's 16th victory since 2001. police are looking for five suspects in a robbery attempt across from police headquarters. the suspects demanded cash from the victim in the parking lot of a 7-eleven earlier this month. they did not seem to care that they were just a few feet from alameda police headquarters. two suspects can be seen in the video. police are looking for two other men and another woman. 4:53. marin county deputies found a marijuana growing operation in inverness park, there were 700 plants in the home.
