a san francisco nightclub where shots are fired. we'll tell you what club goers believe started the violence. and what was discovered outside the building that has investigators looking closely at the case. plus, a 75-foot tree comes crashing down on a home in the east bay in the middle of the night. we'll show you the damage it left behind. good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. i'm mike mibach. i'm claudine wong. let's check in with rosemary to see how the day is going to shape up. >> it is going to be a beautiful day. we are looking at temperatures within a few degrees of freezing. i will bring you the current temperatures in a few moments. mostly sunny. temperatures will rebound and feel pretty good for the afternoon. in the extended forecast, notable changes, and it includes the possibility of wet

weather. we begin with developing news out of san francisco. patrs at a nightclub are describing the chaos after someone opened fire this morning. alex savage is live near the nightclub not far from at&t ballpark. >> reporter: good morning. club goers tell me this was a chaotic scene. you can see crime scene investigators are still out here processing the scene. someone opened fire inside the place. it's called 330 rich. according to the officer everything spilled outside the club. this is what one police officer described as a running gun battle that extended across the street to the parking lot of this venue. this is near third street and brandon. an officer tells me that three people in the end were hit bey gun fair. one of them was taken to the

hospital in critical condition. i talked with witnesses. they tell me this club was packed at the time. two men apparently got into some kind of an argument near the dance floor, things escalated very quickly, and one of those club goers described what happened next. >> some girl was like, oh my god, he has a gun. my friend drabbed me, pulled me. before you know it, a shot was fired, everyone was down, screaming, blood on the floor in the club, broken glass, people falling, getting stepped on. >> reporter: police tell me all three of those shooting victims are from the east bay. everyone we are told is expected to survive after this early morning shooting at this nightclub. no did he scrippss at this point of any of the people involved in the shooting, any of the people who opened fire but it sounds like there was at

least one shooter because this was described to me as a gun battle of sorts. you can see this is still being processed as a crime scene. it would appear here some of the folks who were at this nightclub early this morning, police still talking to them at this point. i asked police, the argument that started this all what this may have been about. that's something that is still being investigated. we hope to get more information as we move throughout the day. live in san francisco, alex savage. arson investigators are looking closely at an early morning restaurant fire just before 3:00. thick black smoke rose into the office buildings above. there is also vandalism nearby, overturned trash cans and plants ripped from planters in front of the restaurant. investigators say they will look into whether the fire was a result of vandalism. more details about a

suspect, a victim, and their relationship. police this man, 25-year-old juan ramirez, stabbed his ex- girlfriend to death yesterday afternoon. officers say the attack happened at 2:45 in the afternoon at the togo's restaurant in downtown san jose. a student eating there heard the commotion and rushed over to help. >> so i ran over there, and it was just empty. she was laying on the ground on her face bleeding. >> a police search of the neighborhood came up empty. police are still searching for ramirez this morning. they say he and gonzales broke up two years ago and she had an active restraining order against him. police believe ramirez could be headed to mexico in a truck that looks like this one. a dark green 1996 toyota t-100. if you see that truck you are urged to call police immediately. new video of a tree that fell on a house in the oakland hills. it happened around 3:30 this

morning on oakwood drive, the tree estimated to be 75 foot tall crashed down on the corner of the roof. the downed tree also brought traffic on oakwood drive to a stop. firefighters say they do not know what caused that tree to fall. an investigation is underway into a crash involving a scooter and a santa clara county sheriffs patrol car. the accident happened before 12:30 this morning in the area of west heading street and the alameda. investigators are trying to determine if one of the drivers may have run a red light. two people on the it scooter were taken to the hospital but their injuries are not believed to be serious. the deputy in the patrol car was not hurt. the vehicle sustained damage to the right front bumper. a couple of san francisco police cars will be out of action after an unusual crash. officers were investigating an argument on the 4000 block of

mission street. police say pickup truck sideswiped a patrol car, sending it into a second police car. witnesses say officers had to scramble to avoid getting hit. they arrested the pickup driver on suspicion of drunk driving. a man is recovering after being shot bian alameda county sheriff's deputy. police say that man was armed with a home made fake gun. authorities were called to a home in castro valley around 7:00 last night. investigators say the 50-year- old suspect was threatening his family. the sheriff's department says the suspect pointed what looked like a gun at deputies, and that's when a sergeant shot him. >> from outward appearances, it looks like a firearm, especially given the fact that it's nighttime. leads me to believe that he knew exactly what he was doing. >> the fair arm turned out to be a pain and scrap metal shaped to look like a gun. the suspect underwent surgery last night. no word on his condition.

people in santa clara county will have another opportunity to trade in unwanted guns for cash. the sheriff's department is holding another gun buyback this morning. the event starts in an hour at the reid hillview airport in san jose. gun owners will receive up to $200 in cash, no questions asked. during the first one, authorities say they collected more than 1100 firearms. they paid out $114,000, making it one of the largest buyback events in the area. gun violence remains a big focus across the country. coming up, the thoughts of president obama three months after the sandy hook elementary school shooting in newtown, connecticut. an exhausted senate finally passed a budget after a stroint middle of the night. >> the ayes are 50, the nays

are 49, and the concurrent resolution is agreed to. >> the vote was for the most part down party lines. the budget poses a trillion dollars in tax increases with modest spending cuts. it is going to go to the republican controlled house where all expectations are that it will be rejected. republican senators had proposed dozens of amendments. it's a least rare occurrence in history. this morning more than 1,000 people gathered outside the papal retreat near rome. they were hoping to catch a glimpse of pope francis. he went there to eat lunch with his predecessor. vatican observers say they may discuss security leaks. rosemary, i gotta tell you,

welcome back on this saturday morning. a live look at the golden q over the bay. 40s around the bay. nice weather expected for your afternoon. nasa confirms that a big flash of light across the east coast was likely a meteor. there it is making its way across the screen. you can see that big flash of light as it streaks across the sky. it happened last night, and sightings were reported in at least 13 statements many witnesses called it the brightest meteor they've ever seen. nasa says this appears to be a

single meteor event. happening now, president obama is headed back home. he left jordan about two hours ago. we want to show you video of his meeting yesterday. it is scheduled to last just before 8:30 tonight. president obama's trip to the middle east included stops in israel and jordan. >> the president took time to record a message about gun violence. >> today there's still genuine disagreement about what steps we should take to reduce the epidemic of gun violence, but you, the american people, have spoken. >> mr. obama says lawmakers are currently working on gun control legislation the wake of the new town school shooting. bills include reinstating and strengthening a ban on the sale of military-style assault weapons and legislation making it harder for ex cons and people with severe mental illnesses from obtaining guns.

two teens have been arrested in connection with a horrific shooting of baby in georgia. police say two young robbers approached sherry west on thursday as she was walking her one-year-old boy in a stroller. the robbers demanded money. she said she didn't have any, then she says they started shooting, grazing her ear and shooting her in the leg before shooting her baby in the head. >> i tried to perform cpr, but i saw his lungs inflating, but he was not breathing. >> 17-year-old demar keys elkins and an unnamed 14-year- old were arrested yesterday. elkins is considered an adult under georgia law. >> the senseless killing of a young child and it appears perpetrated by children themselves. >> the police chief in brunswick, georgia, said his department is still investigating the motive and searching for a weapon. the search for a gunman on the university of arizona campus has been called off.

tucson police got a 911 call yesterday about a man with a rifle in the administration building. officers he vac you waited students and searched the campus but officials say they did not find anyone or anything suspicious in the area. a plan to shut down dozens of schools in chicago is now prompting accusations of racism. the vice president the chicago teachers union isn't holding back her outrage over the plan to close 53 schools. she says the closures would disproportionately affect african-american students in the nation's third largest public school district. >> this policy is racist, it's classless. >> you are being called a racist. >> no, i think i'm caring about those african-american latino kids bitaking these actions that are not easy to california. >> as many of the schools are half empty. the city says the money spent keeping them open could be used elsewhere. it's expected to save the

district $600 million over 10 years. the military mistakenly sent furlough notices to some national guard members. the defense department initially said it would send the notices to some 800,000 civilian employees at the end of this week because of the automatic sequester budget cuts. congress passed legislation to move some money around. the national guard is working to rescind the notices. >> a fund-raiser is being held today in sparks, nevada for the marines wounded in the explosion at the army depot. seven marines were killed on monday when a mortar shell exploded in its firing tube during training at the army depot. there is a revised description this morning of a man suspected of assaulting a woman in vallejo. this is a police sketch of the man. he was initially described as

5' 10" tall, 210 pounds but now police say he's 5' 4" tall. he's accused of grabbing a woman at a park and trying to pull her into a creek bed. the suspect's car is described as an older model silver or gray acura integra two-door. deputies are looking for a man who was mistakenly released from jail. he reportedly walked out of jail yesterday after posing as another inmate set to be released. officials say he did not confirm his identity. here's a photo of parsons. he was last seen walking towards the san lorenzo river. he is known to visit camp sites on the west side of santa cruz. the speed limit at the golden gate bridge toll plaza is going up from 15 to 25 miles per hour. the increase won't go into effect until wednesday. that's when the conversion to

all electronic tolling takes place. the switch will require all drivers to use fast track or set up an account with their credit card and license plate. traffic trouble in the north bayshore area of mountain view. the city council does not want any more commuters clogging that up area. the palo alto daily news roars the council may cap solo car trips or shuttles to work. they could also limit future development or make improvements to get more people to walk or bake to work. the council is holding a study session on their it strategies this tuesday. time now 7:20. he has traveled halfway around the world to save his little brother's life. the bone marrow transplant that has brought an adopted five- year-old boy back together with his birth family. the first weekend of spring dry and mild outside our door. it's a chilly start. i'll have a look at what you can expect for your weekend coming up.

a man from vietnam is in the bay area to save the life of his little brother. before christmas last year his parents found out that his older brother was a match. they drove in from their home in nevada yesterday to greet the boy's brother who flew 14 hours. >> he is going to give new blood. >> reporter: and that will make you feel better. >> the brothers plan to have the bone marrow transplant at oakland children hospital in mid-april. >> in about 30 minutes the fight for air climb begins in san francisco. the event is sponsored by the american lung association to raise awareness for healthy lungs and clean air. about 1200 people, including firefighters in full gear will participate in this morning's event. they will climb 1,197 stairs

u.s.a. has the three points that they so desperately needed. >> it was crazy to watch this game. imagine playing soccer in all. that it doesn't happen very often but this was the scene in denver, colorado, as thousands of qualifiers gathered to watch. the u.s. men's team took on costa rica and they just kept on playing with the exception of brief stoppages. the usa did win th a final of 1-0 and will move on to face mexico on tuesday. the oakland raiders are losing one of its top players. punter shane lechler will sign with the houston texans. he reportedly will receive a million dollar bonus and up to $5.5 million over three seasons. back on track after one week after that deadly crash. cars will be starting their engines in marysville. why some say it is just too

terrifying screams inside a san francisco nightclub after someone opens fire injuring three people. good morning. welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. customers say one moment they were drinking and having fun, then the next moment they were ducking for cover. alex. >> reporter: good morning. witnesses tell me they ran for cover when someone opened fire inside the nightclub which is just down this alleyway here. rich street. the place is called 330 rich. police say this actually turned into what they describe as a running gun battle. things extended outside of the club. shots were still being fired in the club's parking lot. three people were hit. one was transported in critical condition. it's unclear at this point if those victims were intended targets or just innocent bystanders.

club goers tell me the place was packed. about 1:30 this morning two men got into an argument and someone fired at least one shot near the dance floor. people were in a panic, many trying to escape the gunfire. >> terrified. i have a child to go home to. there was a girl behind me asking me what to do. i'm like, i have no idea. stay behind this car until they stop. once overbody took off running and i didn't hear any more gunshots, that's when i tried to get out of there. >> reporter: police out here at the scene tell me that all three of those shooting victims are from the east bay. at this point there is no description to put out on the shooters who were involved but again, this was some sort of a gun battle so at least two shooters involved in this early morning shooting. we bring you back out here to a live shot looking at brandon street, still an active crime scene. there seems to be a few people still apparent witnesses or people who were at this club at least and police still trying to talk to some of those folks.

they have a lot more investigative work to do. they still to have process this entire parking lot. this is the parking lot that belongs to this club. the club 330 rich. this is where shots were fired early this morning. more shots fired outside the club. three people hit and taken to the hospital. live this morning in san francisco, alex savidge. a girls basketball coach from the east bay is off the team after he admitted to soliciting for sex on-line. the girls team is playing in the division 4 state championship game this morning in sacramento. before the trip, he posted explicit photos of himself on craigslist saying he wanted to meet up with women there. >> unfortunately, you can't put yourself in a situation where anything might be misinterpreted. but no one should do that, whether you're a teacher or not. it's just not appropriate.

>> after we talked to the school president, he forbid taylor from having any more contact with students. players say taylor never acted inappropriately around them. taylor said he did nothing illegal but regrets posting the ad j. a bay area baseball coach is out on bail. 52-year-old joel kauffman seen here wearing shorts and a cap surrendered to authorities yesterday in martinez. he faces felony and misdemeanor charges. allegations include that he molested one boy and secretly filmed another. he was released on $325,000 bond. kauffman used to coach at oakland and also palo alto high. the city of oakland is holding another meeting to try to reduce crime. police hope neighbors will help them prioritize the biggest threats to public safety. the mayor and police chief will meet with the public from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 at the beebe memorial

cathedral on telegraph avenue. the next meeting, april 27th. dozens of new police officers will begin patrolling the streets of oakland next week. the oakland police department graduated its first class of recruits in four years. it consists of 38 officers, including seven women. the class is one of the most diverse in oakland history. the recruits speak 11 different languages including spanish, mandarin, and far sirkz. >> this is the beginning of the process to rebuild this organization to give us the opportunity to put much needed resources in the city to help fight crime. >> oakland police hope to graduate a new class every six months. a class of 55 police cadets begins training on monday. budget concerns and limited resources are two reasons why the oakland police department may scale back its presence at

the city's first friday event. the festival on march 1st drew half as many people abs the past. police added extra officers in response to a deadly shooting last month. the hours of the first friday arts festival have already been cut to reduce the possibility of more violence. just one week after two people were killed at the maryville raceway cars will be back on the track tonight. 14-year-old marcus johnson of santa rosa and another man were killed when a car lost control and slammed into the pit area. >> it's dangerous for the people that are watching it. i really believe that they ought to take the time to fix that. >> the racetrack owner says investigators have not determined the track to be unsafe. investigators continue to look into what caused johnson to lose control. helping to rebuild a fairfield landmark destroyed by

fire, that's the goal of organizers as they hold a benefit concert for a club that suffered a million dollars in damages on january 25th. investigators say the fire started in the attic. it was determined to be an accident. money raised will go toward rebuilding the club which brings in some big name comedians from across the country. there's a big emergency drill going on right now inwalnut creek. canine search and rescue teams are conducting a mock search at the shell ridge open space.  they are simulate ago plane crash. this will all take place until 3:00. the open space is still open to the public but pet owners are being asked to keep their pets out of the training areas. police in washington state are now trying to retrain their drug sniffing cogs to ignore marijuana. now that the state has legalized it for personal use most dogs still alert police to marijuana, and that could result in an illegal search. prosecutors warn police may now

need more than a canine's alert for a search warrant. police are trying to did he- sensitize the dogs to pot. the investigation is underway in hayward after five middle school students were sickened possibly by drug laced brownies they got at school. someone was reportedly handing out brownies made with marijuana or other drugs yesterday during wood shop at martin luther king jr. middle school. one person said he had to rush his 13-year-old sister to the hospital. >> the school board and the superintendent for hayward need to take action on this, like right away. it's not acceptable. >> the girl's family says the school told them the brownies came from a student at nearby tennyson high school. a district administrator says they contacted police and pair med kicks and parents when students started getting sick. today is a big day for cal

someone opened fire at the club in the city's south of market district. ktvu's alex savid gerkz has been talking to both police and witnesses. still looks like an active scene. >> reporter: it still is an active crime scene. witnesses have told me inside the club it was a chaotic scene. people were just scrambling for safety when someone opened fire in this nightclub on the left- hand side of this small alleyway. the club is called 330 rich. police say eventually what happened was that gunfire extended out here. it turned into what one officer described as a rolling gun battle, people firing shots at one another. eventually shots were fired here in the club's parking lot across the street where you can see a crime scene technician still processing evidence. three people hit by gunfire when things were said and done. one of those people was transported to the hospital in critical condition. the other two suffered nonlife-

threatening injuries. it's unclear at this point if those victims were intended targets or just innocent bystanders. it was about 1:30 this morning when two men got into some kind of argument and one of them pulled a gun. people were in a panic as a single shot was fired. everyone was trying to escape. it was a terrifying night. >> we just came out to have a good time. we were in vip. we had a table. we're not from this side, we're from the other side. we assumed we'd actually be safer and have a good time. this is what we had to deal with. >> a police officer here tells me all three of the shooting victims are from the east bay. there is no update on their current condition, at least as of this time. police are also not able to put out any sort of a description this morning on the shooters.

for the residents of a house in the oakland hills this morning. around 3:30 a.m. a tree fell on this home in oak wood drive. a tree estimated to be about 75- foot tall crashed down on a corner of the roof. the downed tree also brought traffic on oakwood drive. no one was hurt. crews are now cutting the tree up and hauling it away. firefighters say they do not know what caused that tree to fall. an investigation is underway into a crash involving a scooter and a santa clara county patrol car. that accident happened before 12:30 this morning in the area of west heading street and the al la immediate dane san jose. investigated orsz are now trying to determine if one of the drivers may have run a red light. two people on the scooter were taken to the hospital but their injuries are not believed to be serious. the deputy in the patrol car was not hurt. the vehicle sustained damage to the right front bumper near the tire. a couple of san francisco police cars will be out of action for awhile after an unusual crash. officers were investigating an argument on the 4000 block of

mission street around 8:30 last night. police say a pickup truck sideswiped a patrol car sending it into a second police car. the truck finally stopped after crashing into another vehicle and losing its right front tires. witnesses say officers had to scramble to avoid getting hit by the pickup. they arrested the pickup driver on suspicion of drunk driving. a man is recovering this morning after being shot bey an alameda county sheriff's deputy. police say that man was armed with a home made fake gun. authorities were called to a home in castro valley around 7:00 last night. investigators say the 50-year- old suspect was threatening his family. the sheriff's department says the suspect pointed what looks like a gun at deputies. >> from outward appearances it looks like a fair arm. especially given the fact that it's nighttime leads me to believe that he knew exactly what he was doing. >> the fair arm turned out to be a pipe, and scrap metal shaped to look like a gun.

the suspect underwent surgery last night. there's no word on his condition. new information on a deadly stabbing in san jose. we do have more details about the suspect, the victim, and their relationship. police believe this man, 25- year-old juan ramirez, stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death in an apartment complex parking lot yesterday afternoon. officers say the attack happened at 2:45 p.m. in front of several people at a restaurant object north first street in downtown san jose. a student eating there told us he heard the commotion and rushed over to help. >> so i ran over there. it was just empty. she was laying on the ground on her face bleeding. >> gonzales died at the hospital. a police search of the neighborhood came up empty but police are still searching for ramirez this morning. they say ramirez and gonzales broke up two years ago and shed an active restraining order against him. police believe he could be headed to mexico in a truck that looks like this one. it is a dark green 1996 toyota

morning at the 330 rich club. that's located near rich and townsend streets, not far from at&t ballpark. a witness tells ktvu an altercation in the club spilled onto the streets. a witness reports hearing one shot inside the club, then a rapid succession of shots outside the club. >> terrified. i have a child to go home to. there was a girl behind me asking me what to do. i'm like, i have no idea. i'm going the stay behind this car until they stop. >> three shooting victims were transported to san francisco general. investigators hope footage from surveillance cameras outside the nightclub will help them catch the gunman. two teens have been arrested in connection with a horrific shooting of a baby in georgia. police say two young robbers approached sherry west on thursday, as she was walking with her one-year-old boy in a stroller. the robbers demanded money. she said she didn't have any.

goers about he 1:30 or so when witnesses say two men got into some kind of an argument on the dance floor. one of them pulled out a gun and fared a shot. the gunfight then continued outside of the venue. lots of shots were fired back and forth. three people in the end were hit by gun fire. one victim transported in critical condition. the others had nonlife- threatening injuries. one witness told me it was simply chaos inside the club. >> some girl was like, oh pie god, he has a gun. my friend grabs me, pulled me. before you know it, shot was fired, everyone was down, everyone was screaming, people running in and out, blood on the floor in the club. people were falling, getting stepped on. >> police tell me that all three of those victims are from the east bay. and i did check in with a spokesperson for the san francisco police department this morning. there is no current update on their conditions. police at this point are still searching for the shooters involved in this gunfight. i also want to point out i did

his ex-girlfriend, sandra cruz gonzales to dint an apartment complex parking lot yesterday. officers say the attack happened in front of several people at the restaurant on north first street in downtown san jose. a san jose state student eating there told us he heard the commotion and rushed over to help. >> so i ran over there, and it was just empty. she was laying on the ground on her face bleeding. >> gonzales died at the hospital. a police search of the neighborhood came up empty. police are still searching for ramirez this morning. they say he and gonzales broke up two years ago and shed an active restraining order against him. he could be headed to mexico in a truck that looks like this one. it is a dark green 1996 toyota t-100. if you see the truck you are urged to call police immediately. an investigation is now underway into a crash involving a scooter and a santa clara county sheriffs patrol car. the accident happened before 12:30 this morning in the area

of west heading street and the alameda in san jose. investigators are trying to determine if one of the drivers may have possibly run a red light. two people on the it scooter were transported to the hospital but their injuries are not believed to be serious. the deputy in the patrol car was not hurt. the vehicle sustained damage to the right front butcher near the tire j. a couple of san francisco police cars will be out of action after an unusual crash. officers were investigating an argument last night. while they were doing that investigation police say a pickup truck sideswiped a patrol car. the truck finally stopped after crashing into another vehicle and losing its right front tires. witnesses say the officers had to scramble to avoid getting hit. they arrested the pickup driver on suspicion of drunk driving. it was a loud wake-up call for the residents of a house in the oakland hills this morning. around 3:30 this morning a tree fell on this home on oakwood

legislation in the wake of the newtown school shooting last december. bills include reinstating and strengthening a been on the sale of military-style assault weapons and legislation making it harder for ex-convicts and people with severe mental illnesses from obtaining guns. mitt romney is set to host a retreat in utah this summer. according to reports the former republican presidential candidate has sent out e-mail invitations to a number of politicians, business leaders, and donors 0. the cost of attending the event is 5,000. the retreat is sponsored by romney's son's investment firm. it is said to give business executives and politicians a chance to network with each other. california continues to have the highest unemployment rate in the nation. new numbers released by the state yesterday show california's unemployment rate stayed the sale in john at 9.8%. however, the state saw the second largest increase in jobs with 254,000 added. here's a look at where we stand in the bay area. all counties are below the

state average. marin county has the lowest unemployment rate at 5.5% while alameda and contra costa county are sitting at 8.2%. the military mistakenly sent furlough notices to some national guard members. the notices were for two weeks unpaid time off. the defense department initially said it would send the notices to some 800,000 civilian employees at the end of this week because of the automatic sequester budget cuts. but the pentagon delayed notification after congress passed legislation to move some money around. the national guard is now working to rescind those notices. bay area commuter airportses have avoided the budget axe. the faa released a list of the towers that would be shut down. towers at sacramento executive

and salinas municipal airports will be closing. we've created this map which shows you some of the northern california airports. santa rosa, san carlos, napa, and the others were spared. boeing has announced it will lay off 800 commercial jet workers this year. those layoffs come at fact trees that modify the already built 77 dreamliners and 747 yes. boeing says the layoffs are not related to the recent grounding of the 787 dreamliner. american airlines is trying something new for passengers who want to board their flight alleges earlier. the airline is trying out a new policy at a few airports that's designed to encourage people to check their bags. they say if you don't take a carry-on you can board right after all the elite flyers but the change is getting some mixed reaction from passengers. >> i think it's actually great,

throughout the morning. gunfirer renting both inside and outside that nightclub. alex savidge has been talking to witnesses. alex, what are they telling you? >> reporter: more shots were fired outside the club along the street in what police describe to me as kind of a rolling gun battle involving at least two people. you can see this morning crime scene technicians are still processing this parking lot on brandon street for evidence. a little while ago we got a look inside the club where the shooting began. it's called 330 rich. it's on rich street. the place was packed. 1:30 this morning witnesses tell me two men got into some kind of an argument. one of them pulled out a gun and opened fire, firing just one shot. people scrambled for cover inside. the gunfight then spilled outside of the venue. three people in the end were hit by gunfire. one of them transported in

critical condition and the other two have nonlife- threatening injuries, according to police. one club gore told me she is certainly grateful she wasn't hit. >> terrified. i have a child to go home to. there was a girl behind me asking me what to do. i'm like, i have no idea. i'm going to just stay behind this car until they stop. once everybody took off running and i didn't hear any more gunshots, that's when i kind of just tried to get out of there. >> reporter: police say all three of the shooting victims are from the east bay. police this morning still trying to track down the shooters involved in this gunfight. i also want to point out this morning i did send an e-mail to the general manager of this club called 330 rich. it's right down rich street here, this small street near third and brandon on the right- hand side. i sent the general manager an e- mail for any comment. still haven't heard back. live in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu news. police are looking for the

driver in a deadly hit-and-run accident. a witness told officers that a car hit a man and then took off. that man died at the scene. police are now looking for the driver but say they do not have much of a description. a girls basketball coach in the east bay is off the team after he admitted to soliciting sex on line. toussaint taylor was a volunteer coach. he posted explicit photos of himself on craigslist saying he wanted to meet up with women. >> unfortunately you can't put yourself in a situation that could be misinterpreted. and no one should do that, whether you're a teacher or not. it's inappropriate. >> after ktvu talked to the school president he forbid taylor from having any more contact with the students.

players say taylor never acted inappropriately around them. a coach accused of child molestation is out on bail. this is video of 52-year-old joel kauffman. he left the jail after posting a $325,000 bond. he faces fell lone know and miss did he mean nor charges. kauffman is accused of molesting one boy and secretly take video of another. he also used to coach at oakland and palo alto high. a man is recovering after being shot by a deputy. the deputies say that man was armed with a home made fake gun. authorities were called around 7:00 last night. investigators say the 50-year- old suspect was threatening his family. the sheriff's department says the suspect pointed what looked like a gun at deputies. that's when a sergeant shot him. >> from outward appearances it looks like a firearm, especially given the fact that it's nighttime, leads me to believe that he knew exactly what he was doing.

>> the fair arm turned out to be a pipe and scrap metal shaped to look like a gun. the suspect underwept surgery last night at eden medical center. no word on his condition. a fund-raiser is being held today in sparks, nevada for the marines wounded at the hawthorne army depot. on monday a mortar shell exploded in its firing tube during training. seven marines were killed, eight others survived. five were seriously injured and two had minor injuries. just one week after two people were killed at the marysville raceway cars are going to be back on the track tonight. two people were killed when 17- year-old chase johnson's car lost control and slammed into the pit area. some people, though, say it is too soon to have a racing competition. >> it's dangerous for the people that are watching it.

hospital. >> she felt drowsiness, tired, nervous, tingling. >> the school board and the superintendent for hayward need to take action on this like right away. it's not acceptable. >> the girl's family says the school told them the brownies came from a student at nearby 10nyson high school. the district says it is launching disciplinary action. canine search and rescue teams are conducting a mock search at shell ridge open space. they are simulating a plane crash with victims and debris. several agencies are testing their coordination skills. the open space is still open to the public but pet owners are asked to keep their pets out of the training areas. in a story will you only see on 2, surprise inspections uncover illegal dumping in contra costa county. inspectors found drums of unknown substances, dumpsters full of electronics and trash mixed with toxic materials at

transfer facilities that they say are operating illegally. county officials say outlaw operators dropped off worthless junk in vacant loss or burn it instead of taking it to the dump. >> some of these sites are actively burning garbage so there's an air pollution issue. if they're not handling the waste properly, they can get flies breeding, rat and mouse breeding. treasure island's development authority sent out a letter to people on the island telling them about five more radioactive sites found this week. the sites are located near housing area and public health officials say the soil did not appear to pose a significant health risk. the navy says it sent its own investigators, removed some soil and plans to monitor the areas in the coming months. the city of oakland is holding another safety meeting within next half-hour. the town hall-style meeting is designed to build trust between the police department and the community. police hope neighbors will help

welcome back. a live look at lafayette this afternoon. seasonal temperatures tin forecast. see that flash of light flying across the sky? nasa confirming that that light seen across the east coast was likely a meteor. we are going to show it to you again from dash cam footage from the washington, d.c. area. you can actually see it traveling across the horizon. this all happened last night. sightings were reported in at least 13 statements many witnesses called it it the brightest meteor they've ever seen. nasa says this does appear to be a single meteor event. a suspected thief lurking on the bay area high school campus ran into the wrong principal. police say dozens of ipads have been stolen this month from backpacks at st. ignatius prep. on thursday the principal said and the dean of students stopped a man matching the description. after a couple of questions the

man took off rung but did not get far. >> there's an eight-foot fence. i was kind of close to him. he kind of tried to go over the fence. that's when i caught him and dragged him down. >> police arrested 27-year-old gabriel ruiz vega. officers say he had seven of the stolen ipads in his own backpack. inspectors are trying to determine if he may have sold the others that are still missing. new this morning, authorities in brazil are seeking criminal charges against 16 people in connection with with one of the worst nightclub fires in history. 241 people died in the january disaster. the defendants include the club's owners, manager, and three band members. investigators say the band started the fire by setting off fireworks inside. several city officials could also face manslaughter charges for granting the club an operating permit. one minor is dead and another injured after part of a tunnel collapsed at a coal mine in central utah at the rhino

mine in bear canyon. the other miner was rushed to the hospital. this mine is actually located a few miles from a coal mine in crandall county where a collapse in 2006 trapped and killed six workers. in alabama a 10-year-old boy was crushed to death when a flight information board fell on him at the birmingham airport. the boy's mother and his three brothers were also hurt. officials say the family was simply catching a connecting flight in birmingham when that heavy sign fell on them. strangers actually rushed over to try to lift that board. it weighs 300 to 400 pounds. you are looking at video of some of the aftermath of that as people were taken to the hospital. unfortunately the 10-year-old boy died at the hospital. his mother is listed in serious condition. at least one witness said the sign was not properly mounted.

there is an investigation underway at the airport to try to figure out exactly what happened. two teens have been arrested in connection with a horrific shooting of a baby in georgia. police say two young robbers approached sherry west on thursday as she was walk her one-year-old boy in a stroller. the robbers demanded money. she said she did not have any. then she says they started shooting, grazing her ear and shooting her in the leg before shooting her baby. >> i tried to perform cpr, but i saw his lungs inflating, but he was not breathing. >> 17-year-old demar keys elkins and an unnamed 14-year- old boy were arrested. elkins is considered an adult under georgia law. the police chief in brunswick, georgia said his department is still investigating the motive and searching for a weapon. dozens of new police officers will begin patrolling the streets of oakland next week.

the oakland police department graduated its first class of recruits in four years. it consists of 38 officers, including seven women. the class is one of the most diverse in oakland history. the recruits speak 11 different languages including spanish, mandarin, and farshi. >> this is an opportunity to put the much needed resources in the city to help fight crime. >> oakland police hope to graduate a new class every six months. two cadets were hired by the vallejo police department. budget concerns and limited resources are two reasons why the police department may scale back resources for the first

friday festival. new this morning an update on a story we first told you about yesterday morning. we want to show you a picture of archie, a dog allegedly stolen while his owner was asleep on bart. archie's owners called ktvu to report that archie had been spotted by a nurse at san francisco general hospital. the nurse said she saw a dog that matched arrest chai's description being walked with two white men behind the hospital. archie's owners plan object following one this lead. a $3,000 reward is offered for archie's safe return. an investment firm has submitted a proposal to buy dell. the blackstone group reportedly sent a preliminary proposal. the bid would rival a $24.4 billion company from company founder michael dell and silver lake management. dell has until tuesday to respond. the popular angry birds game is not just an app for your smartphone any more.
