it was a close call for a young girl and grandmother this morning after the two were run over by a garbage truck. it happened around 7:30 at broadway and embarcadero in san francisco. we brought you live coverage on mornings on 2. the investigators say the 66-year-old woman suffered a leg injury in the accident but is expected to be okay. her seven-year-old grand dar was left with a serious foot injury. >> they were struck by the garbage truck making a right turn. investigators say the driver of the truck is cooperating and it appears to have been a

a contra costa county sheriff's deputy crashed a patrol car this morning. the deputy was rushing to a call in the richmond hilltop area. this happened around 1:00 this morning at the sao paulo avenue in richmond parkway intersection. the patrol car flipped on to its side when the deputy swerved to avoid crashing into a car. the officer was treated for minor cuts and bruises. surveillance video from china, check this out. shows a bus driver's brush with death. a lamp post crashed through the bus windshield barely missing the driver. his spleen was ruptured but he is lucky to be alive and managed to safely stop the bus, none of the 26 passengers on board were hurt. a powerful earthquake shook central taiwan today killing at least one person. magnitude 6.1 trembler caused buildings to sway and sent people into the streets. 72-year-old woman died when a wall collapsed on her.

19 others were injured by falling debris. emergency officials say southeasterly homes and businesses were damaged. san francisco firefighters are still cleaning up this noontime after an overnight four alarm apartment fire. the fire damaged three buildings in a complex on third street and mckinen avenue in the bay view district. reporter: just before 1:00 this morning. >> man, it was a ball of fire. wires popping and sparks, everything. >> it looked like a big ol' gigantic inferno. >> 20 people went running for their lives. >> crackling, sparks, little explosions you know from the wood. >> flames tore through three apartment building off mckinen and third street. >> it got hotter and hotter and the flames started shooting up to where you can see them like a distance. we were across the street and you could feel the heat from

the flames. >> the fire appeared to have started between two buildings in a garbage chute. >> and the fire truck was like taking a water hose to put out a forest fire. >> took 130 firefighters two and a half hours to contain the blaze. >> we did have gas in between the building. took pg&e a bit to get out. they mitigated that. this building was fully involved. >> for a few minutes neighbors say it was tense. >> some people were stuck up in it that building. you could hear them hollering but the electricity came out it was so smoky -- i guess they didn't. >> everyone got out safely including two children. two firefighters received minor injuries. a bar under the apartment called the club long island sustained major damage. neighbors say police detained one tenant who had an ongoing dispute with the landlord of the building. two of the buildings were yellow tagged and this one has a facade that's in danger of collapsing on to the sidewalks so crews

have cordoned it off. arson investigators will try to figure out exactly what sparked the fire. in san francisco, ktvu channel 2 news. it's beginning of a new era on the golden gate bridge. for the first time in 76 years there are no human toll collectors. the golden gate bridge uses an all electronic toll taking system. at midnight toll collectors left their booths for the last time. some have been trained for other positions. but many say they will miss the contact with motorists at the toll plaza. >> we are all very close. so it's sad. sad but happy we were on to a new chapter. >> people are what made this job what it is. just a lot of kind people, you know. and i have my memories and nobody can take them away from me. >> and not too many problems so far. some drivers slow down at the toll plaza but others zip through too fast. the speed limit is 25 miles per

hour. drivers crossing the bridge now have a choice of fastrak or paying based oan picture taken of their license plate number. work is now officially underway on san francisco's new transbay transit tower. a ceremonial ground breaking was held this morning for the project adjacent to the transbay transit center. developers are celebrating the close of the sale of the land parcel. sold the 50,000 square feet of land on mission and first for $192 million. the tower is slated to be the tallest building on the west coast. protestors have launched what they call a gorilla art campaign against those controversial ads on muni. they have been painting over them and writing their own political messages. the ads by a conservative political group include inflammatory quotations from osama bin laden and others. critics say they are hateful and anti-muslim. muni donating the ads proceeds

to the city's human rights commission. in washington state, about 17 homes are in danger due to landslides on whidbey island. crews have been out since 5:30 this morning working on plans to secure the area. this is the way the scene looked a couple of hours ago. see the house there precariously on the edge. several residents have been evacuated from their homes on the island north of puget sound. one home on a bluff has just ten feet of its back yard left. well, a little early in the afternoon for low clouds to make a push inland but that's what

stocks are lower as investors look to see if cyprus can stave off panic when the banks re-open tomorrow. cyprus imposed limits on money transfers and hired extra security guards. institutions have been closed for two weeks to avoid a run during the country's financial drama. taking a live look at the big board, dow currently down 31. the nasdaq turned around and now up two and s&p down one. there is a new challenge for boeing once its dream liner jets are flying again. there are reports the faa may cut how long the 787 is allowed to fly on some routes even after a redesigned battery system is
