a bank robbery inside a safe way store, not the first time but this time luck and timing led to an arrest. good evening i'm gasia mikaelian. >> and i'm frank somerville. police caught a man after police say he tried to rob a bank for the second time. deborah villalon is live, and she learned that an alert bank teller made the difference. >> reporter: police say joshua james metoxen is in jail because he returned to the scene.

strolling up to this safeway store and to a teller. the teller remembered him from last week and called police. police trailed the suspect to the freeway until he was pulled over. >> there's been an up tick here recently. >> reporter: an up tick that's been an on sloth. more than a dozen bank robberies in marin and sonoma county since december. >> oh my gosh, this is crazy. >> reporter: shoppers tonight admit bank robberies aren't much on their minds going in for groceries. >> they're more conscious about it if i know that i'm at an atm. you're always looking around like that. i don't think about it when i come to a grocery store. but i guess i should. >> reporter: but luck and timing combined to give police a break today. and now they will look for

possible links between suspect josh matoxen and other robberies. >> here we have today, what they look like, their vehicle and how this happened and look to see if we can find other cases that are similar that we can work with other agencies and help them close. >> wow, twice. and they got the guy so hopefully that will be it for a while. >> reporter: the felony warrant that was out for josh mctoxen was for two robberies but he may be tied to other robberies throughout the area. the san jose police department is looking for help tonight identifying two men who invest -- investigators say robbed people as they were getting off the train. police say the robbers followed the victims then threatened to shoot them if they didn't hand over their property. here is a closer look at the

suspects, police describe them as adult males in their 20s, they say one is african american, the other is latino. >> reporter: the police chief in richmond is offering a $25,000 reward tonight after a bullet went inside a home this afternoon and a fragment wounded a 1-year-old by by boy in the neck. the shooting happened at 1:15 this afternoon near first and west mcdonald in the iron triangle neighborhood. amber lee is live where she spoke to the child's father about the changes that need to happen, amber -- >> reporter: just a few minutes ago i spoke to the father of elijah lee. he said his son successfully underwent surgery and that he's relieved the baby is expected to recover. tonight police are looking for the man who was lying in wait and opened fire on a bicyclists. a stray bullet injured a baby who was inside a near by apartment. reshan lee tells us the baby was under the care of the

about 10:30 this morning on davis road. the truck caught fire, the highway patrol says the driver claimed he had been eating, choked on his food and passed out. the two people in that bmw were killed. caltrans says it is working on a fix for those broken bolts or rods on the new eastern span of the bay bridge. we've been telling you how at least 31 of those massive bolts snapped after being tightened recently. today two engineering experts told us the bolts can be fixed but that it is going to be costly and difficult. the problem seems to involve a weakness in the seal caused by the presence of hydrogen. the engineers say that can

happen when therefor shortcuts taken in the galvanizing process. some caltrans workers fake infection data and got paid for work they didn't do. they faked inspection data on several projects. the auditors said caltranss didn't immediately check the work but now says they are safe. two workers received nearly $14,000 in overtime that they did not earn. the report includes 14 recommendations for actions caltrans should take. drivers headed to the new devil slide tunnel be advised for closures tomorrow. workers are scheduled to do some additional striping on the approach. weather permitting that should start tomorrow morning at 9:00 and be done by 3:00 in the afternoon. the tunnels just opened this week. we have new information on the ongoing saga at the port

new video of a head on collision this evening in south richmond that injured seven people. it happened at about 7:20 at stakey avenue and south 37th street. police say a chevy camaro collided head on with a pickup

truck . the rest of the injuries are nonconsidered life threatening. police say speed may have been a factor in this crash. stanford researchers today released a new study that appear to link birth defects to something we cannot get away from. why researchers aren't telling women to change what they do, maureen nee -- naylor has the story. >> reporter: according to r esearchers, women exposed to pollution are at a higher risk to give birth to a baby with birth defects. a study reveals traffic pollution causes a risk to the unborn baby during the first eight weeks of pregnancy. >> we're trying to put together more evidence. >> reporter: amy padula is the

senior author of the study. researchers surveyed hundreds of mothers. using data from as far back as 1997, they determined expected women living in polluted area are more at risk. >> we found that women who lived in polluted areas that they had a higher risk of spinabifida. >> reporter: one in three babies are born with a defect. but they don't know what caused 2/3 of the conditions. this study sheds more light on a specific category. >> we found a link between pollutants and neuro defects. nuero defects are defects of the brain and spine that come at birth. >> it is extremely important to not only women but us as a community. >> reporter: researchers say it's too early to advise

pregnant women to do anything different. saying there's further studied needed linked to pollution exposure. live in palo alto maureen naylor. a teenage student pled guilty to stabbing another student. hewbard now faces 60 years to life. new information tonight about what police found at the home of the man accused of threatening to kill state senator leland yee. everett bashum was arrested back in february. search warrants unsealed today show police found a homemade destructiontive device, 26 guns, several high capacity magazines and about 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

bashum was believed to be angry about yee's proposed gun control legislation. president obama made a new push for congress to pass new gun control laws. at the white house he appeared with 21 mothers who have lost children to gun violence. the president said most americans are in favor of background checks for gun purchases. >> none of these ideas should be controversial. why wouldn't we want to make it more difficult for a dangerous person to get his or her hand on a gun? >> reporter: the national rifle association argues that more laws aren't needed it says what is needed is better enforcement of laws already on the books. the supreme court isn't expected to rule for months on proposition-8 an the defense of marriage act but time magazine is declaring that gay marriage has already won. the weekly news magazine has two different covers for its april 8th issue, one features a lesbian couple from new york,

the other features a gay couple from arizona. the two people involved in an officer involved shooting are wanted felons with a history of violence. the shooting happened yesterday afternoon in the willow glen neighborhood. an offer fired on a stolen car as the female driver tried to run him down. she was wounded and her male passenger was also injured. both were booked for assault with deadly weapon on a police officer, stolen vehicle charges and possession of stolen property. according to police in san jose, there are a staggering number of car thefts in the city these days. on average one car is stolen every hour. ktvu's matt keller has more on what some people say is causing that problem. >> reporter: leaving your vehicle parked in san jose has become an increasingly risky thing to do. >> i ran out of gas, pulled over. i had to walk to a phone. came back it was gone. >> what was the peeling like? >> it sucked. >> reporter: more and more people in san jose are feeling

that way. statistics released to me today by the police department revealed just how bad it's getting. 934 cars were stolen in january. and 893 in february. a 53% increase compared to the same time last year. break that down and at least one car is stolen every hour. one city councilman believes one of the reasons vehicle thefts are on the rise is because of the realignment of the prison system. >> i think regionally we're having our issues with people coming out of the jail to communities all over the bayarea. >> certainly more officers can help. with a lot of the crimes not only vehicle thefts but that certainly would help. >> reporter: the auto detail ended a year and a half before as officer numbers dwindled. putting the officer numbers into reverse should be a priority. >> that's horrible.

people work hard to make their car payments and to come outside and have your car stolen and it's up. there has to be something done about it. >> reporter: older model hondas or toyotas are popular with car thieves but they say a car can be stolen from any one, any where at any time. matt keller, ktvu channel 2 news. brentwood police arrested a man accused of molesting a boy 20 years ago now they are encouraging other possible victims to come forward. gordon blake is being held on 16 counts of molestation. the now adult victim came guard and said blake molested him starting at age 10. he said the abuse went on for six years. blake may have come into contact with other children at the brentwood community pool. temperatures today were on the warm side it was 70 in antioch. 70 in fairfield and 73 in

yosemite is getting ready to welcome campers back. ktvu's robert handa made the journey to to yosemite and tell us about the changes to keep visitors safe. >> reporter: curry village was ground zero to the hanta virus outbreak. two people died and 10 visitors

got severely ill after staying in curry village tent cabins which were ultimately destroyed. some campers arriving today, were reassured. >> since they said hanta virus, i thought they're not trying to hide it. >> reporter: the newly built cabins will be open. it turns out the old cabins had double wall insulation that mice crawl through. >> it's a quarter of an inch is all they need to get in. we've done lots of grading, lots of batoning down the hatches to make sure they're as included as possible. >> reporter: it also led to unprecedented voluntary testing of more than 600 park employees. >> less than 1% of the

employees testing showed previous exposure to hanta virus which is below the national average. >> reporter: even when all the cabins are ready for rental. the public education programs will be ongoing. in yosemite national park, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. a rockland man is recovering tonight after surviving a 30 to 40-foot fall from a cliff on the sonoma cliff. he was air lifted to santa rosa memorial hospital this afternoon. we have pictures here that show the rescue effort. the man was staying at a near by rental house when he decided to climb along the cliff with family members. in san francisco, a 68-year- old woman has died after she was struck by a car after crossing the street with her husband. tanya mathis was killed yesterday. her husband suffered a minor injury to his leg.

this case is in the hands of district attorneys. officials are urging 7,000 dental patients to get tested for hiv, hepatitis b and hepatitis c. they are all patients of scott harrison. an investigation began after one of his patients was found positive for hepatitis c and hiv. according to the building in charge, the new restaurant will mix a craft man style with elements from a japanese shrine. he said it would open in a few months if all goes well. the famous restaurant was damaged during an early morning fire back on march 8. reconstruction is expected to start in about two weeks. social media helps reunite

new at 10:00, san francisco's tourism industry just wrapped up it's biggest year. jana katsuyama is here with what led to the biggest year.

year. the number of jobs supported by tourism totaled 74,000 and the annual payroll was more than $2 billion. as for tonight's exhibition game. fred inglis will have more on that in sports. and the tsa has made a new move for veterans. they will no longer have to remove their shoes or limbs. this move came after a veteran was forced to take off his prosthetic leg. the tsa says it's not because of that incident. a woman lost her camera, and it just turned up at a beach. years later an employee for china airline found it and the

online from seven retailers and items will be delivered the same day. the exact price has to be worked out if google goes ahead with the project. wal-mart is also considering a delivery service of its own. critics say there are potential problems. one would be liability for the delivery person another is the chance of theft and lack of a recognized delivery company might upset some customers. at&t announced today that it will begin taking preorders for the samsung galaxy x4 which is android's answer to apple's iphone 5. the s4 will have a larger screen, improved camera and other upgrades. verizon, sprint and team mobile will also sell the s4.

casino. the flames started to consume the old key largo casino on flamigo road it closed back to 2005 after developers planned to build condos on the property but that fell through and the las vegas real estate market collapsed and the property has been vacant ever since. firefighters battled hot spots well into the evening. damage is estimated at more than $4 million. for the first time in more than 40 years, san francisco has a new fire station. ktvu's mike mibach takes us inside this state of the art station one and also tells us how a museum played a key role in its creation. >> reporter: san francisco south of market station number one. 17,000 calls a year averaging 46 a day. >> one of the busiest stations in the nation. >> reporter: and now one of the newest. >> i was 6 years old and in first grade the last time we opened a new fire house. >> reporter: inside an isolated decontamination how are, even a

wbc welter weight champion fighter guerrero is facing charges. guerrero who's from gilroy says the weapon is registered in

california. new york authorities say that doesn't matter, guerrero is not licensed to carry the weapon in new york. the fighter was there promoting his may 4 bout with floyd mayweather jr. if convicted, guerrero facing five years in prison. surveillance video show it is pavement in a residential compound suddenly giving way. the sinning home is more than 60 feet deep. officials are looking into the possibility that construction near by may have weakened the ground. police are looking into who broke into a winery and stole $60,000 worth of wine. someone broke their way into the offices and wine rooms.

normal. this after much of california experienced a record dry january, february and march. how little snow have we had in the last month. this is where they did the snow survey today. there's the mark the pole left last month. you can still see it. the snow survey for april is also important because it mark it is beginning of the snow melt. with rising rivers, it is well under way. the upside, a reservoirs remain relatively full. just above average for this time of year. still state officials are urging con -- conservation. >> a lot of the particular egg users have already put on alert that they're going to be cut back. more details now the city

of santa cruz is already considering water restrictions that could hit before summer starts. rain in the area is 60% of normal this rainy season. the board could vote on restrictions as early as april 31st. this is the system that's brought the showers it's been sitting offshore. but as we go into the next 48 hours this thing is going to start to migrate toward the coast. when it gets here that's when we're going to see rain. measurable rain. that's going to happen on saturday afternoon. so tomorrow a warming day than we had today. it was warmer yesterday. temperatures tomorrow we could see upper 70s and maybe even a low 80s as we head toward the southern santa clara valley. temperatures outside right now.

we have 58 in livermore, 59 in antioch. we're going to see mid-40s in the cool spots. the forecast highs tomorrow, yellows are 70s. but note that these are going to be mid- and upper 70s. oranges are 80s and we see some 80s popping up. warmest day of the week tomorrow, more sunshine tomorrow. there'll be clouds around but more sunshine and then it all sort of deteriorates as we head into our saturday afternoon. we'll get that in the computer model. a few clouds. there might be a chance as we go into the bay county. as we head into tomorrow, warmer and looks like we have showers. this is the way the model sees it right now. tomorrow morning it's clear. mostly clear. warmer. tomorrow afternoon, no showers there's some up here. but showers move in. that's the low working into the coast. in that low that's where the strength of the storm is. not that stuff that has been spinning up at us. that low will have some

dynamics or lift and moisture and cool air. and that will get our showers going by saturday morning. some light drizzle activity but not enough to shut you down. we have real showers starting to move in and overnight saturday. there's your rain maybe a .25 of an inch. easter sunday looks like something like this right. we can see quarter inch to a half an inch as this moves through saturday night into sunday afternoon so maybe a few sprinkles left for monday. we'll see how the timing on that goes. these are your highs for tomorrow. warmer than they were today. it'll be nice to get real rain but it's really not. maybe even the thing that goes through the weekend .25 of an inch. not enough to do us any good. january, february, march in san francisco the driest three month period ever recorded in san francisco. the records go way back to the
