although much has been accomplished in the area of gun violence in the city, we still have a long way to go. the community reacts after a 1-year-old is shot. you will hear from the man who was holding the baby when this happened. the 1-year-old is still recovering. we have new information this noontime. ktvu's lorraine blanco has spoken to the boy's grandfather who was holding the baby when he was shot. good afternoon, lorraine. >> reporter: good afternoon. the baby's family is all here at children's hospital. right now we spoke with baby of the baby's grandparents. they tell us that 1-year-old elijah is doing well. he's expected to be released from the hospital sometime this

afternoon. as for police, the search for the shooting suspect is their number one priority. this is the low window penetrated by a bullet that sent a 1-year-old to the hospital. the baby was the only one hit inside. >> thank god that all of us are alive, you know. i have to had three or four funerals today. but out of his mercy has, god has saved us. thank god for that. >> reporter: the city's shot spotter system traced the gunfire near first street. >> i think yesterday just sent a signal to all of us, although we've done much, there's still much to do. >> reporter: this reverend said he's been praying the yesterday's violence. in the past few years, police have credited his faith-based organization for helping with the city's trend of decreasing

violence. the reverend said the people who commit these crimes need help. >> i'm sure whoever it was who pulled the trucker, it was not their in -- trigger, it was not the intention for them to do that. that's what happens any time you pick up a gun and choose to let the bullets fly. >> reporter: you can see there's several surveillance cameras in the area. the boy's grandfather tell us the police have a picture of the shooter from one of those cameras. there's a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. mike mibach will have more during the evening newscast including an interview with his mother. lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. police are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in a richmond police that injured seven people. police say the driver of a camaro collided with a pickup truck at 7:20 last night on steggy avenue. two people in the camaro were

critically injured along with a man in the truck. four others were injured but they are expected to survive. closing arguments are underway in a federal wrongful lawsuit filed by the window of a barbershop owner killed by police. derek jones was shopt to death in november of 2010. oakland police say they wanted to question jeans in an alleged attack on his girlfriend. officers said they thought he was reaching for a gun but it turned out to be a small scale. the alameda county d.a. sea office later you -- d.a.'s office later rule the shooting was justified. people inside a home thought a car driving through the house was an earthquake. they saw the car crashed in their home. did about $10,000 of damage. >> it knocked all of our stuff to the middle of the garage,

ordered missiles put into towers where they can be targeted at u.s. targets in the region. that comes after the u.s. flew fluck capable bombs in south korea. experts say it's likely the north koreans are only posturing. >> the north koreans don't want a war. but clearly they want to provoke and that may be for domestic consumption for a young leader consolidating his position, winning support from the military or it might be try to coercively bargain, trying to win concessions out of south korea. >> also today, the north koreans held a massive rally in that nation's capital. today, americans are marking an anniversary for. american's ending in the vietnam. it's been 40 years since they withdrew from vietnam.

after they left the war, diplomats, advisers and aide workers remained. dozens of arrests were made within the last hour during an annual good friday protest at the bay area nuclear weapons lab. we were there as 35 peaceful protesters were taken into custody while blocking the main gates of the lawrence livermore laboratory. they've held their annual protests at this lab for the last three decades. >> we have moved in the direction of getting rid of some of our stockpile. but we need to do more. and we need to think of peaceful uses of energy, our green. >> demonstrators say the theme of this year's protest was based on the title of dr. martin luther king's book "where do we go from here? chaos or community? ." christians around the world are observing good friday, the day jesus christ was crucified.

>> christians in jerusalem in a traditional good friday procession followed what's believed to be the path that jesus took to his cruise fiction. the pilgrims stopped several times along the way for prayers. they walked to the church where they believe that jesus was buried. and in rome for the first time, pope francis is leading good friday events as the head of the catholic church. he's heading a candlelit precession in rome. earlier pope francis presided over a good friday's service and read the lord's passion which accounts for christ's last hours. i think that there are signs that people are a little more confident. >> the government says consumer spending is the best its been in months. we'll ask local shoppers if they agree. and rosemary says rain is definitely coming this weekend. she has the specifics -- just

plan, repairs to the fire at this restaurant could be finished by mid-june. the world-famous restaurant was damaged by a fire earlier this month. when it reopens, it will feature elements from a japanese shrine and also american craftman style. reconstruction is expected to begin in about two weeks after the owner receives permits from the city. investigators are looking into the cause of a concord house fire. firefighters say when they arrived, flames and heavy smoke was coming from the two-story house on autumn oak circle. the fire broke out just 9:30. fire officials say the residents were able to safely get out of the home and no injuries were reported. most of the damage was done to the home's garage and addict. san francisco's public housing authority has a cash problem. the acting head of the agency says it will run out of money in two months. if that happens, there will be no money to pay for garbage collection, repairs or staff

salaries and it will be $6.4 million in the red by the end of the year. the housing authority handles programs that provide homes for more than 41,000 low-income families and individuals. b.a.r.t.'s board is promising money from the latest fare hikes will only be used to improve the transit system. not for workers' benefits or pay. b.a.r.t. board members say they wanted to clarify how the increased fares would be used. the board voted unanimously to dedicate the money to replacing and expanding the fleet of trains, building a new maintenance center and installing a better installment system. a new employee code of conduct begins today at the port of the oakland in the part of gaining back trust. among other things, we learned some port workers spent thousands of dollars of public money at a strip club. >> it is really a milestone and

a commitment that we made to the public to respond after we learned of serious challenges that we face and actions that had been conducted by senior leadership. >> the new policy includes tough, new limits on employee spending and travel. it also calls for mandatory ethics training for all port workers. >> new figures released show consumer spending rose in february by the largest percentage in five months. the commerce report showed household purchases which account for 70% of the economy gained almost 1% last month. that's more than economists had predicted. the report showed incomes through by 1% in february, also exceeding analysts' projections. we spoke to some shoppers in the east bay who had mixed reaction to the good economic news. >> there's less chaining than -- complaining than four years

some families are being allowed back in their homes after a huge landslide in washington state. the slide happened near whidbey island seattle. the county is tagging other homes said to be dangerous. geologists will be back at the scene later today trying to figure out what caused the ground to give way. today, shaping up to be a mild to warm day around the bay area following a very gray foggy start. we have blue skies in many areas at this time. a live look from san francisco, a nice rebound, san francisco now 62 degrees and i expect we'll warm to 65 for the afternoon. as we get in around half moon bay, it's still socked in pretty good. still plenty of gray to go around parts of the coast. most of us with mostly clear skies and high clouds beginning to stream in. i expect they will thicken up by the afternoon. 68 in name. 68 concord. 70 in fairfield.

69 in livermore. another 5 to 8 degrees of warming expected for the second half of your afternoon. so we could see mid- to upper 70s, maybe even a few of us touching 80 for your friday afternoon. but the weekend is going to see big changes. it comes in the way of this system here. it's offshore. it's a few hundred miles out. it's going to be moving east as we move through your saturday and sunday. eventually, the center portion of this storm is gonna ride right over us and i think it will happen in time for easter sunday. 350 miles out. we have this first band here. saturday looks cloudy, cooler, a few scattered showers. sunday looks to be the wetter day. for your afternoon, 4:00, we have mostly cloudy skies. we have filtered sunshine out there. not too bad. tomorrow morning we wake up. maybe a few sprinkles. maybe a little bit of drizzle. we wake up with plenty of gray. if you are going to the bay bridge series tomorrow afternoon, that's 1:00. we're still mainly dry, maybe a few sprinkles not out of the

forecast. >> just about 15 minutes ago -- just about 15 minutes ago, the president left miami to go back to the white house. he was there to track private investments on highway and other public works. he made a speech at the miami port that's doing upgrades. president obama is falling for $4 billion in new spending on two infrastructure programs that award loans and grants. all of his proposals require approval from congress. drug-sniffing dogs will be patrolling middle and high schools in dublin again. the dublin school district will have dogs that can sniff out illegal and prescription drugs on campus. dublin forced this to stop back in 2007 and they voted to bring them back last year. rescue workers pulled a 15- year-old boy from deep mud this morning in maryland. authorities say the youngster was stuck up to his waist.

they did not say why he and his friends were in the area. construction workers built a plywood path for the rescuers. once they got the teen out, they took him to the hospital to be checked for minor injuries. well, you know, summer can't be too far away. great america is opening. you can soon go there to ride a roller coaster. park employees say it's unlike any other in the west. ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live from the theme park in santa clara to let us know that's just one of the things that's changed. good afternoon, janine de la vega. how is it looking out there? >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. it's a beautiful day. it is super sunny. perfect weather for opening day here at great america. behind me, you can he soo the -- you can see the signature carousel, the double-decker and then to the right, you can see the brand-new roller coaster that's still under construction. it's supposed to open up in a month or so. now, the -- >> 3, 2, 1! >> reporter: the park opened up at 10:00 a.m. this morning with a ribbon- cutting ceremony and thousands of people showed up to be mock the first to get in. they were greeted by snoopy and the peanuts gang who danced and took pictures. they received free prizes. the park has many thrill rides including the popular flight deck roller coaster that dangles people in the sky. but the one that people are anxious to ride is the new coaster called gold striker. crews are finishing the ride which will be the fastest wooden roller coaster once complete. it descends into a tunnel that resembles a mineshaft. >> i'm excited to try it. my kids are excited to try it. we're ready. we watched the video. we're ready to try it. >> the kids are off spring break. i have the day off also. we're celebrating cesar chavez as a holiday.

it's the perfect opportunity to bring the family out here. i think it's a beautiful day to come and experience great america and the theme park. >> reporter: the company that owns the park is reinvesting in it. over the summer, all of the buildings were painted. and millions have been set on the new roller coaster which is set to open in may. they know with the 49ers moving in, they will be getting a lot more foot traffic. and another incentive to sprucing things up, santa rosa is in the running to boast the next super bowl. an nfl super bowl committee was touring the park recently to look at what it had to offer. and coming back out here live, you can see people are still entering the park. more are expected to come throughout the day and festivities here will continue throughout the weekend with more prizes being given out and on sunday, snoopy will be holding a hunt where you look for a golden snoopy and you get

saw some record numbers. while the dow hit another record close, the real focus was on the s&p 500. after coming close for weeks, the s&p 500 finally closed just above the previous high reached in october of 2007. the s&p is considered a better barometer of the economy since it has 500 stocks while the dow only has 30. the founder of facebook may not like his tax bill this year. mark zuckerberg is expected to owe the irs more than a billion dollars in taxes. that's because he decided to exercise a stock option and buy more than 60 million facebook shares when the stock pent public. epknew the giant tax bill was coming and sold more than 30 million shares to cover it. google is taking steps to increase consumer reliance on the internet. it's now testing google's shopping express. that brings groceries and other products to customers the same day an order is placed.

the test is underway on the peninsula but google says it will not say how many people are taking part in the test. google says if the test goes well, it will expand the service. and the monterey bay aquarium is celebrating easter a couple of days earlier. the three sea otters, they went on an easter egg hunt yesterday. the eggs were made of ice and had some special treats inside. today on ktvu at 5:00 we've learned two people from the bay area died yesterday in this fiery crash on 880. we're looking more into the cause, which was a driver choking on food. just how frequently does food cause accidents involving distracted drivers? thank you for trusting ktvu news. we'll see you the next time news breaks. we are always here for you at ktvu.com and mobile ktvu.com. have a great weekend.
