the failed bolts that are key to the seismic safety of the bridge and tells us with the three things that could have caused them to break. >> reporter: these are the giant anchor rod bolts that the pillars sit on in the event of a major earthquake. >> it's very important. >> reporter: this u.c. berkeley professor of bridge engineers has been critical of caltrans's bridge designs in the past. >> this is the bridge. >> reporter: these anchor rod bolts are a critical component of what are the connectors to keep the roadway and pillars together. >> they move together. when an earthquake happens, this is what happens. if they fail, when the earthquake comes, this is what happens. >> reporter: the failed keys are located at the super critical junction where the self-anchored suspension tower section meets the separate long causeway. >> they cannot afford to have

the anchor rust. >> reporter: the shock being fact is these bolts couldn't take the force of being screwed down let alone what might be thrown at them by a major earthquake. since the broken bolts captain be replaced, is a work-around fix possible? >> always a solution for any problem. >> reporter: caltrans will have to find it. >> caltrans won't make this decision in isolation. >> that was consumer reporter tom vacar, and caltrans said they will find out the problem, and even though caltrans said that the bridge is on time, our bridge expert said that is debatable. and breaking news in oakland. there has been a shooting in the 1200 block of 82nd in east oakland. police tell us that the victim is a male and the injuries are

not life-threatening. ktvu news crews are on the way to the scene, and we are trying to confirm reports that the victim may be a child. but again, all police will tell us is that the victim is a male. a targeted theft at a school on the peninsula has left administrators and students reeling from the loss. john sasaki is live in san bruiny on where the thieves made off with high-priced technology. john? >> reporter: gasia, about 10:00 last night, the thieves cut that chain and in the back of the building into the technology classrooms. someone broke through the door to get into the room, and it was fully stocked with im ac computers and carts with ipads, ipods, and other computers but the thieves went to the newest and most expensive m ac books with nothing else touched rising the possibility that the criminals knew the layout.

they took 22 computers but dropped four of them outside getting away. >> each of the computers is worth $2,000, and i have not begun to price out the software on there. most is subscription based. we pay a fee every year. >> if someone can reach out and help us find them, anybody they can do to help, we will accept it because it's for the children. >> reporter: the school is now on spring break and the staff and police are hoping to find the computers before the students return a week from monday. live in san bruno, i'm john sasaki, ktvu, channel 2news. and we are learning more about an officer-involved shooting earlier in the willow glean neighborhood. we brought you this story live on wednesday. two people were taken to the hospital with non-life- threatening wounds. officers say they tried to pull over a suspected stolen car driven by rolein fillie when

ktvu, channel 2news. a man accused of molesting a boy or a 6-year period is behind bars tonight. 52-year-old gordon blake is accused of molesting the boy from 1991 until 1996. he was arrested earlier this week after the victim reported the allegation. the da wouldn't say how blake met the boy. blake faces a total of 15 felony counts and is currently held on $1. 4 million bail. in san mateo, a man allegedly taking photos of children at a gymnastics club has been arrested on suspicion of possessing child pornography. police the 19-year-old was taken into custody after they say inappropriate pictures were found his phone. officers say he was hanging around peninsula gymnastics on leslie street when he was arrested. investigators say they don't know if he had taken any pictures of the children at the gym. a jury has found a man from fremont buildy of second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing

release him soon. a suspect would likely be fined if found. and a couple involved in a standoff in morgan hill earlier this week were arraigned today. they were in court to face felony and victim charges. the couple was arrested on tuesday after barricading themselves inside a morgan hill inn when police tried to question them about stolen license plates on their car. neither has entered a plea, and they are scheduled to be back in court on april 9. two women are charged with embezzling almost half a million from the san mateo county vector control district. police say that the two worked together to embezzle $450,000 by giving themselves extra pay using employee credit cards for personal purchases and making electronic transferred into their own personal banking accounts. their attorney said that jo ann

and spread to the skin and joints and cause brain swelling and death. health and science editor john fowler, ktvu, channel 2news. a new report finds that the estimated cost of the high- speed rail overall reasonable. the ridership and revenue forecasts are said to be accurate but the rail authority should do a better job of predicting cost estimates. >> we have to be honest with people that the costs are higher now than they had been estimated to be in the past. we can't walk away from that fact as more engineering was done as we've had to make changes to protect communities and farmland, and those things have costs associated with them. >> the cost is still a huge issue. the gao reports that obtaining nearly $39 billion in federal funding is one of the project's biggest hurdles. in a separate development, high-speed rail officials voted to approve $810 million in

bonds to finance the linkage of the rails to existing local and regional rail lines. they also approved issuing more than $8 billion in bonds earlier this month, and the entire project is estimated to cost $68 billion. new numbers show that california's job market gained steam last month. california added more than 41,000 jobs in february bringing the jobless rate down to 9. 6% down from 9. 8% in january. most were in the leisure and hospitality sector. california's great america theme park in santa clara opened for the season this morning. the park employs 2500 people during the run from march through october, many of them, teenagers. the park may have bigger crowd this is year with the new roller roaster, gold striker.
