clouds around half moon bay and just a little bit of light drizzle. light sprinkles near highway 4, 680 where they meet together. i think we will be mostly cloudy. i think we have a chance for a few spotty showers. the wetter day will be tomorrow. >> new this morning a man is in critical condition after a shooting in san francisco over nights. it happened on 24th and brian street. we are live this morning with more onto investigation. >> reporter: good morning. san francisco police say that the victim just underwent emergency surgery. you can see out here right now crime scene investigators are looking for evidence. there are yellow evidence markers on the ground out there. on the eastside of brian street between 24th and 25th street in the mission district. this is what it looked like when we first got here. i talked to an officer who said a man was walking down the sidewalk around three when

someone walked up and shot him. the victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition. the shooter got into a car and took off. there is no description of the suspect or the vehicle at this time. most neighbors were asleep and wake up to the sounds of gun fire. one of them called the police. back out here live you can see at this point brian is shut down between 24th and 25th street. i talked to the detective who said that he still is unsure when the streets will reopen. reporting live in san francisco, ktvu channel 2news. >> united states park police are investigating a shooting near a popular tourist attraction ins. the shots were reported in the fort mason area at about 9:00. investigators say just minutes later a man with a gun shot wound walked into a restaurant and asked for help. police say the victim is from the bay area and is in his 20s. he was hit in the leg and is expected it survive. no description has been released. >> new, the california highway patrol is trying to figure out

what caused a driver to flip his car. it happened around three. police say a man in his early 20s was on the on-ramp approaching southbound 87 in san jose. his car hit the center divide and flipped on it it's side. he had to go out through the wind sheil. he was taken to the hospital. we have no word on his condition. a number of things could have caused that crash including alcohol or distracted driving. >> a 10-year-old is recovering after being grazed by flying debris during a shooting in oakland. she was outside playing when someone down the street started shooting. she was hit by flying wood that was splintered when it was hit by a bullet. >> i know that the community and the police department do as much as they can but the problem is they are doing what -- almost what they can handle. >> nobody else was hurt. no arrests have been made.

>> the family of a baby shot thursday in richmond said the 1- year-old is recovering well. a shot spotter recorded that gun fire as it happened. police say 19 shots were fired in less than six seconds outside the home of a 1-year- old officers say the gunman was firing at a man on a bike just outside the apartment complex. the girl's mother said the piece from one of the bullets hit him in the neck. >> all i heard was his grandpa coming in saying gun shots and the first thing i thought of was my son. >> reporter: police are still searching for the gunman. a 25,000-dollar reward is being offered in the case. >> just about an hour an active sheet drill is starting. it is being held at castro elementary school. people should not be alarmed to see a heavy police presence at

the school until about five. the drill is designed to teach officers how to respond to situations such as this one. this video is from the oikas school shooting. a gunman killed three and injured seven at the school. later this morning there will be an emergency drill at the jail. the drill will let firefighters work alongside the sheriff's office to practice fighting a fire in a high rice. there will be many fire engines and trucks around the facility but it's just a drill. >> new, the president is wishing a joyful easter to those who celebrate the resurrection of jesus christ. >> this weekend michelle, and the rest of us will join christians around the world to celebrate the resurrection of jesus christ and the hopeful promise of easter. >> in his weekly address the president said that the easter and pass over holidays give millions of christians and jewish people a chance to slow

down and recommit themselves to loving their neighbors. >> hundreds of catholics gathered for a individuall service this morning in jerusalem. it was held at the church where christians say they believe jesus was crucified and buried. it's held a day before easter sunday which celebrates the resurrection of jesus christ. the pope will also celebrate his first easter vigil today after praying for peace in the middle east at a torch lighting service. the service will wrap up a receivers preparations leading up to easter sunday mass. tens of thousands are expected to watch the pope give a special blessing the same balcony where he appeared the day he was elected. >> easter celebrations are being held all over the bay area today and tomorrow.

it looks like the celebration will be a little damp. preparations underway for the parade and rain or shine organizers say that parade is going to go on. in golden gate park organizers at the largest easter egg hunt are going ahead with the event despite the forecast and some aren't concerned about the weather because they are looking forward to something else. >> the first thing i like in the daytime, in the morning is that the easter bunny comes with chocolate. >> who doesn't like that? event organizers say they are still hoping for blue skies. we checked in on other celebrations. most say they are going to go ahead as scheduled regardless of the weather and some of those events include an easter egg hunt being held today and tomorrow. most of those begin at 11:00 a.m. at nine danville's show start hats community center on front street and at noon the spring

right. some of this maybe not touching the ground. as we get into the afternoon we are mainly crime the latest models want to bring us some clearing at times. we may see some sun today. this is the system here. it's about 400 miles off the coastline. it's moving eastward and it's going to slide over the bay area on easter sunday and that is going to bring us the most unstable weather in addition to scattered showers, may see a thunderstorm or two pop off in the afternoon tomorrow. here we are mostly gray this morning. notice that, little bit clearing here. not seeing a locality of rain but with the moisture in place that possibility of rain developing, a few spotty showers here and there absolutely in the forecast. into the evening hour itself you have outdoor plans the clouds come back. not a lot of rain but a lot of moisture. a few scattered showers could squeeze out of those clouds, tomorrow morning now we are waking up wet with the source moving in and they become more widespread. one we have scattered showers, especially over parts of the

are helping oakland police patrol city streets. we talked to them about their chase policies after a stolen car pursuit ended in a crash. it happened just before nine last night. the chp said officers saw a stone car and tried to pull it over but it sped away reaching speeds of up to 75-miles an hour. the car crashed in to another car and both driver was hurt. this morning the chp said a chase on city street cities street s is something they try to avoid. >> if a pursuit is happening and the speeds are getting to high or it's a danger to the public we are always assessing the work verses gain and we would cancel. >> the chp said that decision is made on a case by case basis. residential areas, time of day and the speed limit can all effect whether a chase is called off. in those cases air support and license plate tracing can help

track down the driver. >> a man is facing felony charges after a major pot growing operation with nearly 3,000 plants is found. the 32-year-old rented a six thousand square foot business space and used to grow marijuana. he was arrested on thursday at building. in addition to the pot plants detectives say they took about 30 pounds of processed marijuana, they also found more marijuana at his home. pleasant hill police are looking for two men who robbed a check and go. yesterday afternoon the robbers walked in and asked about a certain type of transaction. while the employee explained to them one of them pulled out a gun and demanded cash. the employee was forced to lay on the floor while they escaped. anyone with information about this case is asked to call police. >> north korea has said it's entered into a state of war

with south korea. they said they will all deal with all matters involving south korea according to war time regulations and it warned of revenge against the united states for interfering. the white house responded this morning saying they have a long history of making threats and doesn't think they would be carried out immediately. they do say they are taking the threats seriously. >> veterans across the country are taking their battles the frontlines to congress. groups of veterans say they will rally to fight against any proposal to change disability payments. . the president has endorsed a plan that would work out social security benefits slightishly different than now where it would grow at a slower rate. those new numbers would apply to veterans but groups say they have sacrificed enough and want out of those changes. >> men from san jose who died serving in the vietnam war will be honored with a memorial today at noon. we want to show you the

rendering of the granite memorial titled sons of san jose. there are 142 names on that memorial. mike honda, chuck reed and others will be at the revealing. the revealing of the monument coincides with the 40th anniversary of united states troop withdrawal. the last troops left vietnam 40 years ago yesterday. some veterans have waited decades to get help with painful memory from the war. counselors say they need to be treated for ptsd. >> i just know this. you get an experience like that, be like being in a plane crash. you never forget it. >> in 2008va hospitals started screening for ptsd in clinics and since then the number of veterans with it has increased especially among vietnam veterans. many .

record deal signed by giants catcher buster foe civil. >> this morning a man is in jail on a 500,000-dollar bond after he was found with drugs and three pipe bombs. police say an officer saw a white van parked on the road late thursday night. he smelled marijuana coming from the van and called in police to help search the vehicle and the two people inside. inside they say they found marijuana packaged for sale. drug items, and cash. officers also say they found three pvc pipe bombs, one with an exposed fuse. the man was arrested. he is facing charges. l the second person in the car was released pending further investigation. >> new details about the 20- year-old accused of lying about being raped on the santa cruz campus. she claimed she was attacked in

a wooded area on campus last month but prosecutors now say she put out ads on craigslist asking for someone to beat her up in exchange for sex. they say she did actually meet with a man who responded to the ad and she directed him to hit her. that man is not expected to be prosecuted. she plead guilty yesterday to one charge of making a false report. police are searching for a missing woman who may have been assaulted. . >> a wrongful death civil trial involving oakland police and now it's up to a jury to decide. derek jones was shot in 2010.

it happened as two men confronted jones about a disturbance call. the officers say they shot him because they thought he was reaching for a gun that turned out to be a scale. a 19-year-old man faces up to 16 years in jail for the stabbing of a high school football player. this week a jury found him guilty of second degree murder in the death of the 18-year- old. prosecutors say he stabbed her outside a party. a memo from the city of oakland said problem police radios are now up to police standards. there have been several failures. the city said it made repairs, fixed software and reduced interference from cell phone towers. >> the police union said there isn't a lot of confidence in those radios.

injuries. another is suffering minor injuries. in overnight news, a young man was shot and nearly killed in san francisco. police say he was walking with a friend at 24th and brian around 3:00 this morning when a car pulled up. officers say the people inside that vehicle asked if he was in a gang, then reportedly shot him. the victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. so far, no arrests have been made. u.s. park police also investigating a shooting near a popular tourist attraction in san francisco. shots were reported in the fort mason area about 9:00 last night. investigators say just minutes later, a man with a gunshot wound walked into a restaurant and asked for help. police say the victim is from the bay area and is in his twenties. he was hit in the leg and is expected to survive. no description of the gunman has been released. well, happening right now, there is a big police presence inlier is reit toe, but it's all just a drill. lorainne blanco is live at castro elementary school with more on the active shooter drill that is currently under

way. >> reporter: claudine, the training started about a half an hour to 45 minutes ago. you can see, they have quite a setup out here in front of castro elementary. it's all part of a year-long focus on preparing for a potential active shooter situation in the community. officers from three different bay area departments are training for worst case scenario situations in eler is reit toe this morning. about a year ago, april 2012, a former student at oikos university in oakland shot and killed six students and a secretary. today, officers from area schools law enforcement will hold training. now, this is a private training session that will go on until 5:00 p.m. this evening. the sacramento sheriff's department is helping with today's training. one officer says this is the first time they have brought outside assistance into the city to help with the support. 30 or so officers are taking

part in the two-day event. reporting live, lorainne blanco, ktvu channel 2news. overnight news, the california highway patrol is trying to figure out what caused a driver to flip his car on a freeway onramp. it happened around 3:00 this morning. police say a man in his early twenties was on the alma onramp approaching southbound 87 in san jose. his car hit the center rail and flipped onto its side. firefighters had to pull him out through the windshield. he was transported to the hospital. we do not have word on his condition. chp is looking to see if alcohol or distracted driving could be factors in the crash. new this morning, president obama is wishing a joyful easter to those who celebrate the resurrection of jesus christ. >> this weekend, michelle, maliyah, sasha and i will join christians around the world to celebrate the resurrection of jesus christ and the hopeful promise of easter. >> in his weekly address, the president says the easter and passover holidays give millions of christians and jewish people

morning, saying north korea has a long history of making threats and doesn't think they would be carried out immediately. however, administration officials also say they are taking the threats seriously and have bolstered the u.s. missile defense systems in alaska. some airmen are coming home, just in time for the holiday weekend. this afternoon, families will welcome home members of the moffitt field 129th rescue wing. this is video from january, when the wing was deployed to both afghanistan and the horn of africa. the wing is part of the california air national guard. the wing provides support for rescue missions, as well as medical evacuations. american special operation forces have handed over a base in a troubled area of eastern afghanistan. local afghan commandos will now be in charge. the handover comes a few weeks after hamid karzai demanded u.s. forces to withdraw from the district. there were allegations that afghan soldiers trained by the u.s. committed human rights abuses in the area. a memorial today at noon will honor men from san jose who died while serving in the

manteca police department is buying six new segways for the department. the department received a $46,000 grant to help cut down on pollution. the police chief says the segways will be used by officers during special events. >> it allowed the officers to move around a little more mobile, but cover more distance and they set up a little higher than the rest of the crowd, yet they travel at the same speed as a crowd. >> and the chief also says he hopes to start using the segways next month. one of the agencies investigating last summer's massive fire at the chevron refinery plans to release new information to the public. the u.s. chemical safety board will hold a public meeting on

. we are hearing from a man pulled from chilly waters in vallejo this morning, after his car went off the highway and plunged into a canal. good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it is saturday, march 30th. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. the man was driving west on highway 37 when his car suddenly went off the roadway, just 90 minutes ago. the man's pickup truck went into the water between sonoma boulevard and wilson avenue. two people were inside that pickup. a battalion chief with vallejo fire tells us both were rescued and taken to the hospital. victims say they are grateful someone came to their rescue. >> all i know, i was coming off -- [ indiscernible ] >> well, the man there had minor injuries. the other victim went to the hospital, suffering from internal injuries. the pickup is still in the

canal under several feet of water. happening right now, there's a big police presence in el cerrito, but it is only a drill. ktvu's lorainne blanco is live for us this morning outside castro elementary school with more on the active shooter drill currently under way there. >> reporter: mike, we just talked with a sergeant from the el cerrito police department, who says they have been participating in this active shooter training since columbine. today, though, the training started a little more than an hour ago, all part of a year- long focus on preparing for a potential active shooter situation in the community. you can see the caution tape in front of el cerrito school. the training will go until 5:00 today. this is the first time outside assistance has been brought into the city to help with this important class. inside there, will be several people role playing students, teachers and shooters.

about a year ago, april 2012, a former student at oikos university in oakland shot and killed six students and a secretary. today, officers from el cerrito, novato and contra costa county will learn how to respond to these kinds of active shooter situations. the officers are using castro elementary because it's being renovated, so there's no worry of disturbing children or their classrooms. now, we were just told a few minutes ago that in about 30 minutes or so, the officers will let us inside for a few minutes to get a little bit of video to show us what's going on inside. we'll have that for you in later newscasts. reporting live in el cerrito, lorainne blanco, ktvu news. a 2-year-old has been grazed by a shooting in oakland. it happened on 82nd avenue and 8th street. the girl was outside playing when someone down the street started shooting. she was hit by flying wood from a fence that splintered when it was hit by a bullet. the girl was taken to the

hospital for minor injuries. >> i know the community and the police department are doing as much as they can. but the problem is bigger than they can almost handle. >> no one else was hurt during the shooting and no arrests have been made. well, the family of a baby who was shot thursday in richmond says the 1-year-old is recovering. a shot spotter recorded the gunfire right as it happened. >> police say 19 shots were fired in less than 6 seconds outside the apartment complex where a 1-year-old he lining elijah allie was visiting relatives. the boy's mother says the fragment from a bullet hit him in the neck as he was being fed by his grandparents. >> all i heard was his grandpa coming and saying gunshots, and the first thing that came to my mind was my son. >> police are still searching for the gunman. a $25,000 reward is now being offered in the case. san bruno police are

searching for a missing woman who may have been assaulted. 36-year-old cecilia zamora was reported missing back on february 15th. she was reportedly heading to her cousin's home in san bruno, but never arrived. police were then told that she may have been assaulted while in san bruno. she is latino, brown eyes and dyed purple hair. a new report shows california added more than 41,000 jobs last month. the state unemployment rate fell to 9.6% and here's a map to give you a look at the bay area situation. according to the state department, state employment deformity department, marin county had the lowest unemployment rate at 5.4%. solano county had the highest at 9.3%. well, great america and santa clara's open for business again. this is the opening weekend for the 2013 season. and if economic trends continue, you might see more people visiting the park than in years past. americans saw their incomes rise by more than 1% last

have a few sprinkles, napa, areas near st. helena, maybe a little drizzle, and along the coastline seeing a few scattered showers pop up along 280, over south san francisco. so you may be seeing that outside your door as well. going to back it up and show you where this system stands. it's been here since thursday. eventually, it's going to trek inland, right in time for easter sunday. this is when we'll see the best chance of scattered showers. this is when we will also see the best chance at maybe a few thunderstorms in the afternoon. some of us won't see it at all, but the few of us that do, just remember when you hear the thunder, that means lightning is within reach of striking. so here we are, still 300 miles out. but it will make an easterly trek over the course of saturday. bands sweep through, bringing us clouds, the possibility of scattered showers, but not a whole lot. let me show you into the 9:00 hour. by 1:00, squeezing out a few scattered showers, looks like over the higher elevations and mountains, we'll see the best chance, even clearing for the

tuesday, into wednesday. i'll show you how much rain we are expecting with this weekend's system, coming up. we are getting a better look at broken bolts from the new eastern span of the bay bridge. want to show you one of the failed anchor rod bolts. cal trans says more than two dozen bolts are broken. the failed bolts were supposed to help provide seismic safety near where the suspension cables attach to the roadway. a berkeley bridge engineering professor says the bolts are a critical part of the bridge. >> they move together. this is what happens. if you fail, when earthquake comes, this is what happens. nothing will keep them together. >> the professor is confident cal trans will find a solution. cal trans says its fix is being designed right now and will undergo a peer review before work is started. the giants and a's move across the bay today and play their final exhibition game before opening day. barry zito and aj griffin showing off their arms last night at the ball park.

[ dog barking ] firefighters rescued at least 10 dogs after responding to a house fire in concord. the small fire started in the kitchen of the home on hillsboro drive yesterday. as firefighters made their way through the house, they found a number of english bulldogs in cages. they were able to get those dogs out and contain the small fire. no one was hurt and the dogs are also okay. there is new information about the 20-year-old woman

accused of lying about being raped on the uc santa cruz campus. investigators now say morgan triplet claimed that she was attacked in a wooded area on the campus last month. prosecutors are now revealing that she put out ads on craigslist, asking for someone to beat her up in exchange for sex. they say triplet did actually meet a man who responded to the ad and directed him to hit her. that man is not expected to be prosecuted. triplet pleaded not guilty yesterday to one misdemeanor charge of making a false police report. closing arguments have been made in a wrongful death civil trial involving oakland police. now it is up to the jury. derrick jones was shot by two officers in front of his barber shop in 2010. it happened as two officers confronted jones about a domestic disturbance call. the officers say they shot jones because they thought he was reaching for a gun that turned out to be a small scale. a 19-year-old fremont man faces up to 16 years in prison

for the fatal stabbing of a high school football player. this week, a jury found abraham hague guilty of second degree murder in the death of 18-year- old osana footy. prosecutors say hague stabbed him outside a party last year. he will be sentenced may 31st. police are searching for the thieves who broke into a school and stole $30,000 worth of computers. it happened thursday night at el crystal elementary school. police say the thieves cut a lock on a fence, then broke a window, reached in and unlocked the door. the thieves stole 22 mac book computers, but dropped four of them outside. the principal says whoever broke in seemed to know the layout of the school and went straight for the newest, most expensive equipment. >> not only is it a loss for the children in what they are losing in technology, but for children, when something like this happens, it also scares them. >> the school is now on spring break. staff and police say they hope to find the computers before the students return a week from monday. doctors say a former south

african leader nelson mandela continues to make progress, as people pray for his recovery. ♪ >> mandela has been receiving treatment for a recurring lung infection since wednesday. the south african presidential office says mandela is in good spirits and is now breathing without difficulty. the 94-year-old has been in and out of the hospital several times in the past few months. thousands of people in oklahoma are on edge this morning, as they await the results of blood tests following an hiv scare at a dental office. as many as 7000 people in tulsa could have been exposed to hepatitis and hiv. health inspectors found 17 violations, including rusty equipment at that office. one mother says she took her four children to the dental office. one of her son's blood work has already come back with signs of hepatitis. >> you teach your kids to try to be safe and you think by

taking them to a doctor, a dentist, you're doing the right thing and here you hear, you know, he's maybe changed maybe 7000 people's lives. >> letters have been sent to patients who have visited the clinic in the last six years. the health department is also offering free hiv and hepatitis testing for those patients. ups has agreed to pay the government $40 million for delivering drugs illegally purchased online. investigators say the sales took place across the country from 2003 to 2010. ups acknowledged it was notified during that time that some pharmacies were violating the law, but did not close their accounts. ups also agreed to establish a program to prevent illegal online pharmacies from using its shipping services. concern is growing over an increase in cases of valley fever. the centers for disease control says cases of the airborne disease have more than doubled in the past decade. valley fever is caused by fungal airborne spores and can be life threatening. doctors say the increase could

be due to climate change causing dust storms that stir up the spores. doctors also warn the disease is often misdiagnosed. u.s. regulators have decided to reexamine the health risk associated with cell phone radiation. the federal communications commission is reaching out to health organizations to see if standards aimed at protecting people from cell phone radiation needs to be updated. some scientists and consumer advocate claim radiation from cell phones can cause cancer. the fcc last reviewed its standards back in 1996, which was before cell phone use among americans was booming. berkeley city council is considering raising the cost of parking permits by more than half. under the plan, the cost for a yearly permit will rise from $34.50 to $55. this is an increase of 60%. the city says it raises $2 million a year from selling permits and issuing tickets to cars without one, but that still doesn't cover costs. the council will vote on the plan tuesday night.

area. now, despite the weather, preparations are still under way in san francisco for tomorrow's easter sunday parade and in golden gate park, organizers of the city's largest easter egg hunt are also going ahead with the event. a morgan hill man faces felony charges after police discovered a major pot growing operation, with nearly 3000 plants. police say 32-year-old daniel siegel rented a 6000-square- foot business space on caputo drive and used it to grow marijuana. he was arrested on thursday at that building. now, in addition to all those pot plants you're looking at, detectives also seized about 30 pounds of processed marijuana. and they also discovered more marijuana at siegel's home. pleasant hill police are looking for two men who robbed a check & go on contra costa boulevard. police say yesterday afternoon, they walked in and asked about a certain type of transaction. while the employee explained it, police say one of the suspects pulled out a semi automatic handgun and demanded cash. the employee did hand over money and was forced to lay

down on the floor while the two men escaped. anyone with any information is asked to call police. san francisco emergency officials will be holding a tsunami drill at ocean beach today. they will be walking along the tsunami evacuation route and they are inviting people to join in. those who want to take part should show up at the intersection of the great highway on lincoln way. the meeting time is 10:00. the event is part of national tsunami preparedness week. more than a dozen oakland police officers will be going bald today for a good cause. they will be getting their heads shaved to raise money for childhood cancer. oakland's children's hospital is hosting the annual st. baldrick's event starting at 11:00. last year, more than 1000 similar events were held worldwide, helping raise more than $33 million. a bone marrow drive is under way for a first grader in the south bay. eduardo is battling leukemia. his family says he will only survive if a bone marrow donor
