world champs. it has to be one of the toughest jobs in all of sports to accomplish. but if there's one by that can help them get back to the series, it has to be buster posey, who already has two rings. he's gone from local hero to national celebrity. we're here with buster posey. after the broken ankg of 2011, buster has had a complete breakout into the national spotlight. complete with all of the perk, major awards, the rings and a big-time commercial. >> then you led your team back to the world series in 2012, only to fail. >> excuse me? that was a fun deal. at first, i wasn't too excited about it because, you know, coming off winning the world series and then they've got a video of us not winning the world series. >> game 7, 9th inning, bases loaded. you ground into a world series double play. >> we wanted four. >> look at this this way, you are a hero in detroit.

>> i was there for four hours. so to be called a moron was gratifying. >> along with all of the personal achievement, we may see more of his personality emerge. >> and it's in time! >> and the competitive spirit that still fuels. for instance, despite two world championships, a battle title and an mvp award, buster still believes the best is still too come. >> i think everybody can get better. >> they are gonna bring it. the relay to the plate is in time. they got it! >> i think you see that with guys in all sports. no matter what they are doing. they are not gonna rest on what they've accomplished and be satisfied with where they are. >> i've said this about great players. they never think they've arrived as a player.

that's how buster feels. he knows he can get better. i've told him it's incredible. what a talent he is. >> the sky's the limit for him. he just happens to be a young guy that's doing big things much early in his career. such a settling effect with him on the field that, you know, he is or shining light in a lot of ways. that steady force, i think really allows the pitching staff to relax and our lineup to relax. >> a most rewarding spring for buster posey. he has not had to reflect on the catastrophic injury he sustained against the marlins. but believe it, he most definitely has not forgotten it or the lesson it brought. >> for me being injured in 2011, i think really has allowed me to look at the game differently. at a young age because i can -- i've seen it can be gone quick. you enjoy every minute that you have even on days, you know, you are out here taking the

spring training kind of the grind and try to have fun with it. >> count's 0-2. >> when we all witnessed an historic three-run series of pablo sandoval, not many were aware, there was major league teamwork of a very different short going. true giant fans may remember a one-time phenom, kurt ainsworth. his career as a pitcher never flourished as he and the giants had hoped but he managed to ephad the organization in a -- help the organization in a big way. it was that company that provided that lumber in the tigers' game. this is now that provides the wood for some of the biggest games. >> i still get nervous watching our guys swing the bats on the

field. we saw a niche. we saw a niche and we went out and took it and we went -- we targeted the premium players, the top of the line players, the all stars, the truth is, we never paid an endorsement player to a dollar and we have taken a big chunk of the lead. >> i'm albert pujols. >> oh, yes. that's the same albert pujols who smacked three world series home runs in one game in 2011 with, you guessed it, a mariichi -- maroochi beat. he's an investorrer, along with vogelsong. >> that's a great bat. i like it. i like it a lot.

they do -- the bat, you feel great, you are gonna use it. >> it's one thing for a player to get paid to use the bat for the game they are. when the game is up, it's over. but they found that we could take it to something really special and those guys could value when they are done playing. >> it's a great run when they are blasting home rubs and breaking records but ainsworth admits it can be nerve-racking when the inevitable baseball slump hits. >> when you see albert getting off to a slow start, do you ever think if the phone rings, it's them. >> we were nervous. >> the man can hit. >> offense never hurts but the giants live by the arms, armed and ready for a repeat. but what does the future hold for the franchise? that's coming up right up on

-- during the season, anyone can be stuck with the staff, ace of staff. including ryan vogelsong who was a hanger-on, a by scrapping for a job -- a guy scrapping for a job. now signing a contract and extend tension following his incredible postseason run that included a 3-0 record and a 1.9 e.r.a. he's not about to give up the attitude that comes with fighting for everything he gets on pitching. >> i have to stay hungry and i'm still fighting. it makes you realize how many young guys we have in the organization that are pretty good players. there's only so many spots. they are coming after our jobs. it makes you remember what you were like when you were 22. i was trying to catch guys ahead of me. you have to stay hungry and keep et going the job done or they will find someone else to do it.

>> it take more than a decade for vogel son. it seams like madison bumgarner is taking a different track. that would be the fast track. he's wracked up a 16-nerve season, pitched in the postseason and come opening day, he's just 23 years old. mad-baum knows nothing of the bad old days and loves the fact that this rotation is sticking together. knows nothing else in his big league play. >> i'm really blessed to be part of this and thankful. it's a testament to all of our guys' hard work. we play together. i think that's the reason we were able to pull it off. >> the other lefty in the rotation, barry zito doesn't throw heat but he's certainly taken more heat than anyone else on the staff following his rough beginning in san francisco. but as quirky as this game is

and as fickle as fans can be all it forgiven and barry zito draws nothing but praise these days following his 2-0 performance with a 1.69 e.r.a. in the 2012 postseason. the opening day starter and rightfully so is matt cain. his 2012 season wouldn't seem feasible if it were played out on a video game. not only winning 16 in the regular season, but starting and winning the all-star game. cain also started serious clinchers. and the story on top -- and the cherry on top, absolute perfection. >> on the ground, arias from deep third. got him! and that's a perfect game. >> what can matt cain get better at it? >> i don't know. there's always different things. keep the league, keep your team into it maybe when you give up

when the giants' win over the cardinals, in the 7th and deciding game of the national championship league series. no hit better demonstrates a baseball axiom. but the ball in play. you never know what can happen. >> it's always a learning experience. if you show me anything that's ever perfected the bal, i would be surprised. >> reporter: one thing the giants are expecting from pence is to see his season long numbers more reflective of what he's done previously in his six- year career. he batted .219 in his 59 games with the giants. 66 points below his career average. for pence, though, it's a lot more basic than numbers. >> my goal for this year is to take each day and give my all. if the numbers are not true, the truth is the effort and the preparation that goes in. i went out with the intention to get everything i have for the -- give everything i have for the team and that's where i'm at. >> reporter: while the numbers are not everything, the giants are looking forward to a full

season of production from pence. the same can be said for another of last year's midseason acquisitions, marco scutaro. here's more from fred ingles. >> reporter: marco scutaro has had an mvp. nobody had more fun than scutaro. he went 14 for 28 in the national league championship series. you bat .500 and you earn mvp honors. marco is the first player ever to record six multi-hit games in a single lcs. >> just play to win. >> reporter: without scutaro, what would the giants be? >> he's just a quiet, professional baseball player. he's as professional as they

come. >> reporter: marco was traded from colorado to san francisco july 27th. he hit safely in 52 of 62 games, batting .362 with 44 runs batted in. again, in just 61 games. no wonder his teammates named marco blockbuster as in blockbuster trade. >> blockbuster is great. it's a tribute to the work ethic and the way he's been able to come up and now taken over the starter role. >> marco impresses you every day. watching him having a bat is a special thing. you are seeing one of the best hitters in the game go at it. >> reporter: san francisco is marco's sixth team in 11 mlb seasons. if you want to understand, you have to go back to 2001. this documentary, "a player to be named later." >> incredible play!

the closer for the giants likes to have fun. ♪ the giants have a lot of personalities on their team. and sergio romo has proven to be quite a cake ter with character. he came out of this giant bullpen down the stretch on fire. but the question remains, can he do it over the course of a 162-game schedule and more? joe fonzi has the story of the giants' closer. >> reporter: it's one of the most lasting images of the 2012

world series. ma gel cabrera looking out over the plate for romo's trademark slider. >> got him looking. >> reporter: only to have romo bust a fastball past him with the final out of the game. it's a moment romo relived during the offseason. >> i don't think that one will ever be not on replay at my house or in my parents' house. it's just one of those moments, you are very blessed and prifn lidgeed to be that -- privileged to be that guy. >> reporter: it was kind of a round-about way he became that guy. he totaled three saves in his four three mlb seasons. first brian wilson went count and then casillo struggled. the giants had to struggle with the bullpen committee. romo evolved as the closer. that's his role as this season begins with a bit of a caveat. >> we don't overtag sergio. this is his first year. the closer, you have a tendency to get him up a lot or maybe

try to pitch him three, four days in a row. i don't think we'll do that with sergio. >> reporter: the giants have such a deep bullpen. they refer to it by their own description. >> inning over. >> it's situational pitching. i think that's what's made it successful. everybody in the bullpen has a different angle and a different look and i think that's something that makes us click. >> reporter: and while he finished as the closer, no througher relievers combined for an additional 35 saves. it means the roles may be fluid. it's about a lot more than individual stats. >> i just appear to the best i can be -- aspire to be the best i can be. >> most of us are under two rings. so we like winning. we enjoy it. we're gonna go out there and figure out a way to continue to get the rings on his fingers. >> reporter: plenty of questions need to get answered if the giants are with to -- are to win the division again,
