sunday coast guard officials intercepted a vessel off the california coast about 160 miles west of los angeles carrying 3.3 tons of marijuana. officials say the smugglers boat was from mexico and discovered during routine patrols. when discovered they started tossing it overboard as the boat sped south. >> once we detected them they threw it overboard and fled back to mexican waters. >>reporter: so were you able to catch them. >> we were not able to catch them. there was a low cloud layer that night, and we were not able to track them through the

fog. >> a c130 initially spotted the boat. it flew out of sacramento. when the crew tracked the smugglers it alerted a cutter to the scene. the discovery was made during patrols. oftentimes it's people on beaches who notify authorities when they spot smugglers. the street value was $5 million, and it brings this year's total up to 57,000 pounds, on par with last year's numbers. authorities believe this catch made quite a dent in the persistent drug trade through american waters so, good news for them. oakland police are interviewing witnesses and looking for a suspect in connection with a deadly stabbing. police were called to the 2300 block of international boulevard around 5:15 this morning. the call came from a passerby who found a man lying in the street in front of a three

story building. investigators are trying to determine if he was thrown from a balcony after he was assaulted. he had been stabbed three to four times. he also had other major injuries. >> he had blood coming from his head so obviously head trauma, but i don't want to speculate what kind of head trauma he had. >>reporter: the victim's identity has not yet been released, but it's believed he was in his 40s. oakland police are looking for the suspect in a shooting of an off duty paramedic. yesterday afternoon the car of a 34-year-old was found in a ravine. he was in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head. police say he was at a stop sign when a man got out of a brown car and shot him. >> people are going to want answers. people want to know what happened, why it happened, and what's going to be done about it. >> police do not have a clear

motive, but a source told us when they found him he mumbled the words, he tried to rob me. the legislature is taking first steps towards tightening the already tough firearm laws. an a panel yesterday approved restrictions to sales. people would have to buy ammunition from a licensed dealer and provide identification. sales of ammo would also have to be reported to the state department of justice. legislatures are also considering other bills that would require permit fees and taxes. ahead of a bay area visit, the president is on his way to colorado where gun control laws are on his agenda. he'll be in denver to participate in a round table discussion on gun violence, drawing attention to

colorado's newly passed laws as he steps up pressure on congress to pass similar laws. he wants universe universal background checks on gun buyers. he will not be making any public appearances during his visit. tomorrow he's to attend two fundraisers, raising money for democratic candidates in the 2014 midterm elections. a group pushing for comprehensive immigration reform is speaking out in the south bay. the event is still going on in fact. new at noon the group is asking for quick action to create a roadmap to citizenship.

officers were called in for backup at a fire that began in a kitchen of a bottom floor unit of an apartment. one woman was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation. we have more details on a story we've been following since the morning news at 4:30 a.m. the napa county sheriff's office just release this had photo of a man shot by agents last night. the 37-year-old was wanted on a warrant charging him with assault with a deadly weapon.

franchises. cal tran has ordered a complete reinspection of all the parts of the new bay bridge that came from an ohio supplier after cal tran said more than one third of steel rods supplied by them broke after being tightened. the san francisco chronicle reports the failure has raised concern about their ability to stretch during a major earthquake. repairs could cost $1 million. san jose's mayor has sent a letter to bud asking for a face- to-face meeting on the a's proposed move to the south bay. they've been trying to relocate the a's in san jose. he's thinking about putting a ballpark measure on the ballot. the giants have objected to the a's proposal saying they have territorial rights. >> there are people getting hurt feelings and getting upset about the delay, and i think

a new report shows nearly seven and a half million californians live in places that face major flooding. the joint report from the state and federal governments says it would cost $100 billion to protect the state's endangered infrastructure, 10 times more than the state has to shore up aging dams and levees. the experts say even those would not provide protection from 100 year floods. there is a warning out for boaters after numerous sightings of gray whales that my great between march and may. in the past few days whales have been spotted inside the bay and near san francisco's ocean beach. federal marina thorties say boaters should stay at least 300 yards from the whales. boaters are also being asked to not cross in front of the whales, make sudden moves or get between a mother and her

council member and the former ceo, san francisco's city of commerce. they'll set policies for renaming the airport but will not pick a name. the committee was established in response to efforts to rename the airport after slain gay rights leader. new at noon announced a couple hours ago the america's cup concert series being scaled back after complaints. the concerts are set to take place once a new 9,000 seat pavilion is built at peers 27 and 29. forty concerts were planned between may and october, but now there will be no more than 30. the decision was made after a series of meetings with neighbors concerned about noise and how late the concerts would end. >> noise was a big issue and the timing of the concerts. we suggested 11:30 on the weekends and 11:00 during the week, and through talking with the neighbors, we reduced the
