torn down. . good evening. i'm maureen nailer. heather is off tonight. >> and i'm ken wayne. a week after a san francisco teenager was shot to death in front of his own house, his friends and family members said good-bye during funeral services this afternoon. alex savidge is live in the mission district to tell us why this death is hitting those who knew him particularly hard. alex? >> reporter: well, ken, friends tell me this young man was a good student, a star athlete, who stayed out of trouble. jacob was home from college for spring break, visiting with family last week, when he was killed. today, an entire community came here to this church in the mission to honor his life. as the casket was carried inside st. peter's church in san francisco this afternoon, the parents of 19-year-old jacob valdez were overcome with emotion. students from reardon high school, his alma mater, lined

the front steps. his former classmates are struggling to understand what happened. >> i can't really believe it, because he's a really peaceful kind of person, and i never once saw him get angry. when i heard this, it was unbelievable. >> sad to see him go down like that, the way he did. and he was nice to everybody. >> reporter: there was barely enough room for everyone to stand inside the church today. >> all these people here for him. it's just a real surreal moment. you don't realize something bad happens in the mission until it happens that it's one of your best friends. >> reporter: last saturday, valdez was killed outside his house in the mission. police say the shooter asked about his gang affiliation before opening fire. friends and family members say valdez wasn't in a gang. he was a sophomore at lewis & clark college in oregon, where he played on the football team. today, his teammates wore their jerseys to the funeral to remember him. >> just a happy guy.

loved sports. loved everybody. didn't hate anybody. didn't have anything against anybody. ♪ >> reporter: and i checked in today with san francisco police. a spokesman told me detectives are continuing to work this case, still searching for valdez' killer and hoping that more witnesses will come forward to help them. live tonight in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2news. new details about the victim in last night's deadly shooting in oakland. the oakland tribune reports the man killed was a former photographer for the newspaper who was not the intended target. according to the tribune, 54- year-old lionel ray flukier was fatally wounded after 10:00 while driving home from the gym. he was shot around seminary avenue and mcarthur boulevard near mills college. the intended target of the shooting was critically wounded and taken to the hospital. so far, police have not made any arrests. homicide detectives in san jose are searching for clues tonight after a man died overnight near a popular park. officers responded to a call

just before 3:00 this morning on center road near kelly park. they found a man lying in a parking lot with at least one gunshot wound. he died at the scene. investigators aren't sure if a large party happening nearby is linked to that shooting. this mark's san jose's 11th homicide of the year. two people are recovering from a violent attack outside their san francisco motel late last night. as lorainne blanco reports, the tourists were stabbed as they arrived at their hotel near 7th and mission streets. >> reporter: a brightly lit building, but late last night, the driveway of america can hotel on 7th street became a dark place for two tourists. >> it makes me realize it was a good thing i didn't go out last night. that was the whole reason, because i'm here by myself. i didn't want to go out. >> reporter: a hotel employee says a group of loud men asked to use the bathroom around 11:00 p.m. when she told them it was just for hotel guests, they became angry. one of the men went outside,

got into an argument with a tourist, then stabbed him and another tourist. >> of course that worries me. that can happen anywhere, really. if you think about it. >> reporter: both are expected to survive. the hotel manager says it's a terrible crime and he's glad no one was killed. the suspect got away. >> all entrances are secured with key access. that's our number one priority. and unfortunate that it happened outside here. pom from the street. >> reporter: hotel management says there are several surveillance cameras in and around the building and they did give that video to police. they hope it will help them catch the suspect. in san francisco, lorainne blanco, ktvu channel 2news. another stabbing in oakland left a man critically injured outside a downtown nightclub off 17th street and san pablo avenue. police found the victim with several stab wounds after 2:00 a.m. on the street. the stabbing happened after

some type of altercation. police have not made any arrests. two workers at chevron refinery in richmond were taken to the hospital in an incident involving a leak. it happened just after midnight when a small amount of substance called flushing oil leaked. flushing oil is a type of oil used as a solvent to clean refinery pipes and equipment. chevron says the two workers were treated for exposure to the oil and released. no word what caused the flushing oil to leak. the weather caused flight delays today at san francisco airport. mist and low-lying clouds were blamed for delays of between 20 and 60 minutes mostly on short haul flights up and down the coast. right now, sfo is experiencing departure and arrival delays of 15 minutes. check with your airline before you go to the airport to check your flight status. taking a live look at conditions at san francisco, it's been mostly gray all day. you can see still overcast hanging over the bay bridge in the central part of the bay. in 12 minutes, meteorologist mark tamayo will have his

complete bay area forecast, including how soon we can expect showers. hercules police arrested two men after discovering stolen mail from all over the bay area. police tell us they initially detained 25-year-old brandon thomas harris and 27-year-old justin connolin for trying to use a counterfeit $20 bill at a hercules store. after a search of their vehicle, police found two suitcases filled with stolen mail from 20 different bay area cities, as well as the city of torrence in los angeles county. bay area emergency workers sprang into action today, but it was all for a drill. more than 200 search and rescue personnel from agencies all over the bay area took part in what they call mobilization exercises. that included hazard assessments, emergency medical care, search and rescue operations. the teams practiced for large earthquakes that caused building collapses, a lot of injuries and people trapped. >> basically doing extrication, search, rescue of live victims, and then also simulate those

victims that have been exposed to chemical, biological and radioactives. they will do a decon of those victims, as well as the rescuers themselves and their equipment. >> several search and rescue dogs also took part in the exercises. the emergency drills continue through tomorrow. continuing coverage to north korea. a planned ballistic missile test has been delayed. meantime, foreign embassies are taking a wait and see approach after north korea warned it would not be able to guarantee the safety of embassy staff in the event of war. north korea has issued a series of unusually strong threats since it was sanctioned by the united nations last month for carrying out a nuclear test. most experts say it's all just war rhetoric. >> i must say, i've never heard of this kind of thing before, to tell embassies to go run for your lives and then the embassy say, no, we're fine just staying right here. so it is really an example of

this kind of bizarre north korean propaganda. >> the foreign embassies have not announced plans to evacuate. some experts say north korea may try another nuclear test soon. [ police sirens ] a horrific scene at a political rally, where two bomb blasts killed at least 20 people. investigators say the first bomb was detonated by a suicide bomber and the second was some sort of home made bomb. the bombs exploded as people gathered for lunch to hear from a sunni candidate campaigning ahead of the upcoming election. police say an airman stationed at beal air force base east of yuba city was found dead in his off-base home last night. the airman was found around 6:00 last night. his name has not yet been released. air force officials are working with the sutter county sheriff's department investigating that death. in afghanistan, six americans were killed today in two separate attacks. officials say a suicide car bomb killed three u.s. service members, two u.s. civilians,

and an afghan doctor in zabul province. they were riding in a military convoy. secretary of state john kerry says a female diplomat is among the dead. an american civilian was killed in another insurgent attack in eastern afghanistan. the attack comes on the same day the joint chief of staff arrived in afghanistan, there to assess the level of training that american troops can provide to afghan security forces after combat forces complete their withdrawal at the end of 2014. the adult son of popular pastor and author rick warren died today in an apparent suicide. a statement released by warren's saddleback church in southern california says matthew warren took his own life at his home. his father said matthew suffered from mental illness and deep depression for years. his son was 27 years old. . well, it's been one year since the deadly mass shooting at oikos university. how friends and family are marking the somber anniversary

a pedestrian was critically injured in san francisco overnight after being hit by a taxi. it happened just after 2:00 this morning on broadway near larken near the broadway tunnel. one witness said the pedestrian was not in a crosswalk when he was hit. >> we just heard a screech and the impact and then saw the bodies fly about 15 feet

through the air and then called 911. >> the victim was taken to san francisco general hospital with life-threatening injuries. police say the taxi driver stopped and cooperated with officers on the scene. investigators say they don't believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident. a memorial concert for the victims of last year's oikos university shooting gets under way in about 45 minutes. people placed flowers at the front door of the nursing school on tuesday. that marked a year since the shooting that killed seven people. former student juan go has been charged in the mass shooting, but a judge found him not competent to stand trial. tonight's concert features the san francisco master choral in st. paul. three home burglaries happened within an eight-hour window yesterday. the burglars got into homes located between 8:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon yesterday.

the burglaries are likely linked to a rash of door knock burglaries in the area. if nobody answers the door, the criminals break in. growing support in the east bay to try to save a quirky- looking movie theater from the wrecking ball. as john sasaki reports, pleasant hill's dome theater survival story is almost as compelling as some of the movies its shown. >> reporter: dozens of people went to pleasant hill's theater this afternoon, but not for the latest suspense movie. >> we don't have a lot of time to save it. >> reporter: this group is trying to save the theater itself. >> something that's beloved by a lot of people. there's a lot of potential for this to be an important historical and cultural resource for the area. >> reporter: but the plan is to replace it with a dick's sporting goods store. the theater, with its signature dome, opened in 1967. many people have fond memories of the first movie they saw here. >> as my reward for finally making it through a week of preschool, my older siblings brought me to see "the sound of

theaters in july instead of its planned october release. >> you guys got plans for the night? >> nothing major. meet up with the fellas, head out to the city. >> why don't you take the train out there. >> fruitvale follows grant's last 24 hours before his death four years ago. it inspired early oscar buzz when it debuted at the sundance film festival. the move to july is seen as unconventional because award season contenders are typically released between october and the end of the year. fruitvale will open in limited release now on july 26th. the kansas legislature late last night approved a sweeping new antiabortion bill that states life begins at fertilization. the bill would block potential tax breaks for abortion providers and bans abortions based on gender selection. supporters say the life begins at fertilization line in the bill is meant to be symbolic. but abortion rights advocates say it's another attempt to restrict access to abortions. the governor is expected to sign the bill into law.

a new york city restaurant remains open and busy, despite exposing hundreds of customers to hepatitis. the new york city health department warned yesterday as many as 450 people who visited the trendy west side restaurant alta are at risk. president obama is ready to present a budget to congress and spoke about it did during his weekly address to the nation. >>it's a budget that doesn't make harsh and unnecessary cuts that only serve to slow our economy. we'll keep our promise to an aging generation by shoring up medicare and we'll keep our promise to the next generation by investing in the fundamentals that have always made america strong. >> plans call for mr. obama to give the budget to the house of representatives on wednesday, but republican speaker john boehner has already dismissed plans to raise taxes on the wealthy. former south african president nelson mandela is back home tonight, after he was released from the hospital today following treatment for
