a close call for a bay area family and power problems around the region. the aftermath of high winds is the top story. good afternoon i'm tori campbell. the winds have been howling all morning in most of the bay area. that has caused a number of problems from power outages to downed trees to sand cover roads in the ocean. alex savidge continues our team coverage where a family had a close call. good afternoon alex. >> reporter: good afternoon to

you. from the front of this house, you can't hardly see the damage here, but wait until you see the backside of this place. this is where strong winds took down one of the tall redwood trees early this morning. giving the home anders here a frightening wakeup call. the huge tree trunk came crashing down around 3:00 this morning. crushing the roof of this house. and the scary part this is the bedroom where the husband and wife were sleeping sat the time. both of them were unhurt. the tree trimmer tells me the issue here was the trunk had split into two over the years. >> the problem here it fell from 60 feet in the air it was one landing bulls eye right across the top of the house. typically when a tree falls, it falls from the ground. it has momentum but not like this. >> reporter: in san francisco strong gusts top 8ed this tree- - toppled this tree.

forcing muni buses to be stopped. >> we are busy. we are doing the best we can. >> reporter: blowing sand forced to shut down along the great highway. in some spots the sand was close to four feet deep. one driver described blinding conditions. >> we went through a couple big sand dunes when we were going at 40 miles an hour. and set up at alarm. my knee hit the key and the car alarm was buzzing. it was pretty exciting. yeah sand all over the place. >> reporter: it was a nerve wracking commute for drivers across the bay area. with high wind warnings. this morning's wild weather hit hard in contra costa county at this pleasant hill condo complex. a tree fell right on top of this pickup truck leaving behind a mess for work crews. at the olympic golf club course in san francisco, players have to deal with a different kind of a hazard today. several downed trees. some of them right on the fareway. those are are going to be

removed before anyone there can play through. as we bring you back out here live in san mateo the tree removal company already busy. one of the workers told me when it's all said and done, the repair job at this house hit by a tree could end up costing the homeowners a couple hundred thousand dollars. i want to head over to my colleague brian flores. >> reporter: good afternoon to you. it is certainly calm now. but that certainly was not the case hours ago as you mentioned strong and gusty winds. not son-in-law effecting several residents here but throughout the bay area. they had to deal with the gusty winds, downed trees and downed power lines. several problems as well. we are in the wood side area. there are several crews dealing with downed trees and power outages from the high gusty winds. as we drove up here, we saw one down tree that knocked over a power line. it's unclear how many people are effected in the immediate area. there are a lot of homes still

effected. we also caught up with a woman who's daughter had a medical emergency and evented from the power outage. they said they had to deal with it by going around the down power line by going around safely. >> my daughter is expecting twins today. she is supposed to be induced. so she had to go around this tree and walk up to 83 and get a ride down the hill to the hospital. >> reporter: now pg&e has been very busy dealing with power outages today. they say at the peak at the storm which was earlier this morning upwards of 60,000 customers were without power but a bulk of the power outages were on the pins la. officials say the storm came quicker than expected. >> i mean, this wind storm came in earlier than expected. stronger than a lot of meteorologists expected as well. caused a lot of issues for our customers over night. >> reporter: and again crews are very busy working, dealing with the downed power lines.

at last check we spoke with a pg&e spokesperson around 10:30, 10:45 as we take you back out here live. she says there are 8,800 customers without power. pg&e crews will be very busy as the afternoon continues. we are live in wood side i'm brian flores. wind will continue to be the weather story for today. the winds have died down just a bit from earlier this morning but expect they will pick up before the afternoon. in many cases this advisory lasting until 8:00 this evening and take a look at how wide spread it is. it's along the north bay coast. it's along the coast of san francisco down close into santa cruz. along the peninsula. it's into the east bay. it's into the central valley. we will continue with gusty conditions to 45 miles an hour into the afternoon and evening hours. right now the winds 22 in napa. sfo reporting 25. 31 miles an hour in fairfield. if you look into san jose 25

products with low levels of lead in them. the company named in the suit argues the lead is naturally occurring and does not pose a health risk. there has reportedly been an arrest in cocaine with the death of a man in san francisco's pacific heights neighborhood. the boy body of -- the body of 47-year-old elliot michael was discovered in his apartment. the medical examiner deemed the death suspicious but has not said how michael died. police are not yet commenting on the arrest. we'll have more on this investigation at 5:00. san francisco police are looking for man they say tried to rob a donut shop in visitation valley early this morning and shot the shops owner. according to officers, the man pulled a gun on the owners wife as she opened happy donut on

bay shore boulevard. that was around 3:00 this morning. the wife says her husband came at the man with a knife and stabbed him and as the man left, he shot the owner three times. the owner was taken to the hospital scene is can'ted to be okay. >> oh my gosh. that is right down the street. that is where i go in the morning. i was just there the other morning getting my breakfast. so it is scary. >> the only description of the would-be robber is he was 5'8" or 5'9" and wearing all black. an early morning fire has left person injured. treated for smoke inhalation. it happened at 7:30. the fire probably started in a back bedroom. the cause of the fire is under investigation. investigators in sunnyvale are look into the cause of an early morning fire that forced families to run to safety. it started around 3:30 a.m. in a detached garage at a home on angel avenue.

when firefighters arrived, flames were coming from the garage roof. high winds helped the fire he was to a neighboring duplex. awakened by an explosion and rushed out to help his neighbors. >> we were sleeping inside in the duplex and all of a sunday there was an explosion. and a bright light in the bedroom and we looked outside the window and the garage of our neighbor had exploded. >> everyone got out safely and no injuries were reported. about two hours ago a 21- year-old man who authorities say escaped from a minimum detention facility in the east bay was located and arrested. deputies say colton of danville went missing around 3:00 this morning from the marsh creek detention facility. residents were notified of the escape. and by about 10:00 a.m. a clayton resident started him. he was walking about three miles away from the detention

facility. president obama is set to deliver speech in a couple hours on gun control in hartford, connecticut. later when the president returns to washington, d.c. he will bring with him family members of children killed at sandy hook elementary school and they will fly aboard air force one. the sandy hook families will stay in washington for two days and speaking to lawmakers to encourage their vote on gun control legislation. there is a new game in town. power ball hit california. we'll tell you how popular it is coming up. rosemary is back in a few minutes with more on the high winds and information on the change coming in the bay area weather. plus a solemn ceremony this morning in the east bay. we'll tell you how a new bench is helping a family cope with a terrible loss.

of disney movies later in life when she developed multiple sclerosis and went public with her battle against the disease nearly 20 years ago. she died in bakersfield. she was 70 years old. and flags at the british parliament are flying at half staff in honor of margaret thatcher. thatcher died peacefully today following a stroke. she had several in recent years. she was 87 years old. thatcher was britain's first female prime minister. she served in august 11 years which is longest than any prime minister. she was known as iron lady for her political toughness. >> as our first woman prime minister march great thatcher succeeded against all the odds and the real thing about march great thatcher is she didn't just lead our country she saved

our country. >> queen elizabeth also expressed sadness and said she would be sending a private message of sympathy to thatcher's family. a father and daughter killed by a speeding driver one year ago are being remembered today in concord. ♪ i believe i can fly i believe i can touch the sky ♪ >> students sang in honor of hadees nuri this morning. the school held a ceremony to unvail a new bench and a garden named for hadees who attended the school. >> her spirit lives on here at wood side in the community as well as in the face of the students. we would like to have her spirit live on through all of us. >> hadees was just nine years old when she and her father were hit by a speeding teenage driver. more than 100 people turned out for a vigil last night at the accident scene. graffiti is an increasing

problem on san jose freeways and rail crossings even as progress is made removing it from neighborhoods. san jose outsourced graffiti removal to a private contractor a year and a half ago. but the contractor does not have the authority to clean up -- [ inaudible ] >> reports canine units will randomly come in to look for drugs in empty hallways and rooms and parking lots. the canine searches will start at the junior high and high school. the dogs will not be brought near students. after years of watching states -- other states have all the fun california is finally part of the power ball family. christien kafton joins us live from sunnyvale.

good afternoon christien. >> reporter: good afternoon. the power ball lottery tickets are the hot tickets in town. right now we are here at hoppies food mart. this is one of the hot spots to buy the tickets. you're looking at some of the winners that have won right here. these are all winning tickets and this is just some of them. all morning long the printer at hoppy's food mart turned out one power ball ticket after another. locals say hoppy's is lucky and hoppy u has a stack of winning tickets to back up that claim. now they are hoping to find the first winning ball power ball ticket in california. >> i haven't sold the big one. >> reporter: californians had to sit on the sidelines as power ball jackpots reached astronomical amounts like novembers $550 million prize. now the state joins 42 others to join in power ball drawings.

players hope to win. the new game drew sunnyvale's mayor. he hopes to win the jackpot but also hopes schools struggling are the big winners. >> we are having fun with it. i would like to retire like everyone else. but if enough much is generated to help the schools and take the burden off the state and help local communities that would be a big plus. >> reporter: and take a look you can see the jackpot is an anticipated $60 million. everyone is hoping to be the first big california winner. the big drawing is set for wednesday. we're live in sunnyvale christien kafton ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. there is word today redwood city has turned off its red light cameras. the cameras were installed to keep people from running red lights. according to the mercury news the cameras worked so well there was not enough income from red light tickets to pay for the cost of keeping the cameras running. hayward has turned off the red light cameras in their city but

san francisco and fremont say they are keeping theirs on. the san francisco giants and their fans could be crying foul if concession workers at at & t park don't get a new labor contract. they work for a south carolina company that employs workers at 250 stadiums around the country. the workers make between $10 and $20 an hour and have not had a raise in three years. and the san francisco chronicle reports there is a possibility of a walkout in may during the series with the dodgers, phillies, and braves. and ski resorts welcomed a new layer of snow overnight in the sierra. although it was only a few inches. anything is welcome after the driest winter on ever. drivers had to use chains for awhile. resort operators hope the snow will let them extend the ski season just a little longer. we had a few sprinkles here at home and behind the sprinkles the wind. that is what we are dealing

with today. giving you a live look there at the wind. whipping that giants flag. it's a tough day for that flag. it's a tough day for us. and notice the water behind it. very choppy today with advisories along the water if for hazardous seas. we have our own advisories. a wind advisory for the coasts our hills. east valley as well as portions of the southern valley locations. sfo right now 25 miles an hour. 16 in oakland. 22 in napa. mountain view reporting 18 miles an hour. i have to point out fairfield though taking the prize on this map 31 miles an hour. and the winds have actually let up a little bit from early this morning when we were clocking 65-75 miles an hour gusts along part of the coast and in some of our hills the winds are gusting to 60 miles an hour. even close to 60. i want to run you through think map and show you when i expect the winds to let up. they will strengthen a little bit before that happens. take a look off the coast. this is where we see our

strongest wind. anywhere from 40-50 miles an hour. in and around the bay we're seeing 20-30. that is what i showed you a moment ago. by 2:00 or so notice how along the east bay and southern portions of the bay and along the peninsula starting to get a light orange here. maybe 25 close to 30 and then 35 close to 40 by 5:00 here. notice this section of orange here. the north bay looks like the winds will be lightening up for your neighborhood. and then by 6:00 and 7:00 lightening up everywhere. the winds could pick up once again for tomorrow. but we're not expecting them to be anywhere near we are seeing today. there is that system there. now pushing off to the east. ridge of high pressure building in quickly behind it. we are stuck right between. and the pressure gradient between those two systems bringing us the very, very breezy conditions. it's going to be a blustery one for the afternoon. 63 in napa. 55 san francisco. 62 in hayward. for the second half of the day

60s to low 70s. maybe even reaching 75 degrees in santa rosa. 64 in oakland. 67 in mountain view. your extended forecast here if we didn't have the wind, we may have been talking about fog this morning. there was moisture but that wind knocked it right now. we have really good visibility going on. notice by tomorrow a big warmup. that ridge of high pressure i thoughed you on -- i showed you on the satellite view will drive our temperatures up. by midweek wednesday get spot 80s. not going to last too long. we do begin to see the temperatures fall off thursday into friday but still feeling pretty good. >> sounds good. thank you. coming up we'll tell you why the california governor is heading to china. and they came very close to the ncaa women's basketball championship game. we'll tell you when the cal golden bears women will be getting home this afternoon.

stocks turned higher in afternoon trading on wall street after spending most of the day in negative territory. aluminum maker alcoa will become the first company to report its quarterly results. taking a live look at the big board, the dow currently up 12. the nasdaq is up eight and the s & p up five. november nor jerry brown is headed to china this week. the governor says china wants to invest billions in the u.s.

among the high points of the week long trip brown will ride the bullet train from beijing to shanghai joined by the head of california's high speed rail authority. a state takeover of vallejo schools ends today. almost nine years after a $60 million bailout. officials say the bailout came after auditors discovered the school district faced a deficit of tens of millions of dollars in 2003. auditors found the district had greatly overestimated enrollment and revenue and underestimated cost. the bailout was the second largest in state history. the cal women's basketball team is flying back home at this hour from new orleans where they made history by appearing for the first time in the final four. the team is scheduled to arrive in the bay area at 1:45 this afternoon. cal lost its semi final game to louisville. the bears had a 10-point lead in the second half but it evaporated in a seven-point
