afternoon. 25 firefighter units responded. again, we are watching this fire, we are updating the conditions, and as soon as we get new information we will let you know. wild winds today toppled trees, knocked down power lines and created dangerous conditions along the coast. ktvu's noelle walker is live in san francisco with a look at some of the damage. >> reporter: julie, i am in park side square next to where a pine used to stand and that is what happened when the tree fell, that used to be a softball back stop. what grows up, sometimes falls down. the winds toppled five trees in the sunset district. >> grateful it happened in the middle of the night. >> the cars got stuck in the

sand. today portions of the road are closed. crews are clearing sand from highway 1. >> reporter: [ inaudible question ] >> no. >> reporter: to the tarps on the bay bridge to seagulls flying on a treadmill, there is no escaping the wind. >> wind like that, people don't take the chance. >> reporter: he works at a fisherman's warp restaurant, small craft advisories, most boats staid at the docks. >> -- stayed at the docks. >> not fun. >> the only one catching anything today was the sea lion. so clearly this is not in plain condition right now.

this probably will be out of commission for the next week. if you had a game scheduled here check with the parks department. in san francisco, noelle walker, ktvu channel 2 news. >> a couple got a scare this morning when a tree fell and crushed the roof of their house. it toppled over and hit the home around 3:00 a.m. it fell on to their bedroom where they were sleeping. the tree's trunk slit in two. >> problem here, it fell from 60 feet in the air, one landing across the top of the house. when a tree falls it falls from the ground. >> the tree fell a few feet from their bed but they were not hurt. >> across the bay, winds caused a tree to fall on a truck this morning, leaving behind a mess. the truck was parked on ridge

view drive. ktvu chief meteorologist bill martin has been tracking the winds. are they starting to calm down? >> yeah. you could feel it. the winds dying down around here. wind advisory till 8:00 p.m. but they are extending into southern california. gusty winds in this area. this is the fire in ventura. here is what i know about fires. we don't know what that is, some type of structure. the winds are gusting up to 50 miles per hour. firefighters when they fight a fire like this, they don't fight it, they get out of the way. if you think they are trying to draw lines, make fire breaks, but you are not going to see them flowing water on these things. a wind warning in this area. i will show you what i am talking about. see all the wind advisories. there is santa barbara.

airport where they had to make changes to ensure safe operations today. new tonight at 6:00 p.m. ktvu's consumer editor tom vacar has more. >> reporter: today's high winds at san francisco international airport caused a lot of late departures. the winds caused the airport to eliminate the use of some runways so planes can deal with the head winds straight on. the real dangerous happens when winds come from the side or behind. >> on a windy day like the one today what it creates is a tail wind effect or cross wind effect. lot of times in extreme windy conditions, if they are too strong for a cross wind we will take off and land using the same runways. >> reporter: here are examples

police found a man in a pool of blood and died in the hospital. megan o'connell is held without bail. police arrested a 12-year- old boy on his bicycle today for stealing items from two people. police say the boy is suspected of pedaling past a woman this morning and snatching an iphone from her hand. the boy grabbed a shopping bag from another woman. police are looking into whether that boy might be linked to similar crimes. police in san francisco arrested three people and issued a shelter in place order after a gunman was sponded here san francisco general hospital. the person was spotted around 2:00 p.m. that prompted police to issue a shelter in place for staff and patients. >> there were no injuries, no shots fired. there was no activities in the

hospital and no interruption to patient care. >> authorities say a gun was never recovered and they have not said what role if any the men arrested had with this incident. >> fremont has a new police chief. he has been serving as interim chief since the beginning of the year. now as the new chief he will over see 286 full time employees. he is a 26 year veteran of the force. he graduated from san jose state university. registered nurses reached a contract agreement after months of picket lines. it covers 800 nurses affcalifornia pacific -- at california pacific. nurses will receive a pay increase of 6% over the next three years. college students rallied

today in support of a group of bills aimed at preventing students from excessive student loan debt. >> he introduced a four bill package. the first bill requires financial literacy courses. the next two require student loan counseling. >> i have about $20,000 in loans right now. and i am a second year at ucla. >> the 4th is a resolution supporting changes to bankruptcy laws. former 49er joe montana threw his support behind a bill to build behind the stadium.

he is a part of a group planning its own hotel, bar and grill near the stadium. they are scheduled to consider the project tomorrow night. if you drive along the 680 you probably noticed trees cut down. that is because a project is underway to widen the interstate. crews plan to add a lane in each direction. they will reduce collisions and decrease commute times. it will be finished by 2014. you already know not to text and drive now the new ruling that could make it difficult for california drivers to use their gps. >> is some baby food so dangerous they need a warning label? >> they should not make it anymore. >> the bay area case at the heart of the controversy. >> coming up after the break,

we want to bring you an update on a brush fire burning near fillmore in ventura county. it is threatening homes in the area. you are looking at live pictures from southern california. it started as mobile home fire at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon. fire officials told residents to grab what they could and get out. officials haven't said how many acres burned or how many people have been evaciated. our chief meteorologist bill martin said winds are gusting to 50 miles per hour. there is a high wind warning

and they are expected to stay this way through the night. this is burning in rugged terrain a lot of canyons in the area. live pictures from southern california of a wildfire burning in the ventura county area. we have not confirmed whether they are homes or outbuilding. as soon as we get new information we will let you know. mean time, new tonight at six p.m. a man says tsa agents at san francisco -- at san francisco international airport held him out because they didn't let him through with his fruit drinks he needs. the agents said he could not bring large bottles of liquids on board even though they were for medical necessity. he said he wasn't even allowed to take a sip when needed it.

>> they are denying me to drink from a bottle. >> we contacted the tsa about the incident and they gave us this statement, we regret tsa didn't follow procedures at san francisco international airport when a passengers wasn't permitted to travel with liquids medically necessary. a lawsuit that claims baby food containers may contain harmful chemicals went before a judge today. ktvu's rob roth is live where parents say they have a right to know what is inside the food they feed their children. the lawsuit claims many baby foods contain led. the manufacturer should be required to issue warning labels. >> reporter: some baby foods contain led and are potentially

hazardous. >> these companies exposed children to led without a warning and what we are here to do is see if they have an excuse. >> the trial pitting the foundation against food manufacturers began today in court. among them gusher, del monty and beachnut -- gurber, del monty and beachnut. as febof this year -- as february of this year the fda said they don't pose any harm. the foundation is claiming under proposition 65 the manufacturers are required to post warning labels.

city planners will reconsider a list of 41 potential locations for new affordable housing. they must come up with a plan according to a state mandate. the next meeting is 5:00 p.m. on wednesday at the counsel chambers. all the winds today may have bane factor in a nest full of baby owls falling. the baby birds were in a nest high in the top branches of a tree and they plan to reunite the babies with their parents by rigging a stronger net. we are all feeling theenths from the winds and the winds -- the effects from the winds and the winds are unusual. >> yeah. blows -- sometimes it is windy but last night was one of those nights, wow! it is really going.

50, 60 miles per hour. winds right now in the fire zone of ventura, 45 miles per hour. this is an area near ventura, you know how hilly it can be. a wind warning in effect for this area. the winds are not going to let -- not going to let up tonight. it is tough to fight the fires when the winds are blowing this hard. you are not going to see ground crews. it is vertical in this area. thousand feet, 1500 feet. it is dry. humidity is 19%. my concern as we watch the fire, the winds are going to keep blowing tonight as we grow into the evening hours. for us, winds are dying down. we will see lighter winds tonight. great highway was closed for a time because of blowing sand.

winds keep blowing over night but not as strong. over night, less wind, less wind, warmer tomorrow. model, thursday before we see a return of clouds. tuesday, wednesday, and thursday a few clouds come in and temperatures dip a little bit. that is it. wednesday is the warmest day of the week. thursday, lake tahoe area, that is it. today was gusty out there. lis low-pressure system and this high-pressure system was too close together. it is moving towards the east and lessens the difference between the two. the winds die down, lighter winds and temperatures start to go up and they will warm into wednesday, temperatures into had low 80s, mid-80s and then they drop off thursday. so winds dying down. still breezy. tomorrow morning, late tonight, you are not going to notice the big winds.

a judge ruled drivers who use their gps device are violating the law. the judge said california's law banning texting while driving also prohibits from holding a mobile device for mapping

purposes. mark ibanez to give us the latest on the warriors playoff hunt. >> you make the playoffs two times in 20 years everybody is antsy till you get it wrapped up. that was situation last night. it didn't work out. but they were back at it today getting ready for tomorrow night with the t wolves. last night against the jazz they were in the game the entire way but they ran into a team that was fired up to make the post season. that playoff spot is the number 6 slot and they don't want to -- don't want to back into the playoffs. >> we will be winning and we are playing good basketball and going into the playoffs you have momentum. regardless of who you play if we take care of what we are supposed to we will feel good about where we are. depends on what other teams do.
