some big names with star power just joined the push to try to bring the super bowl to the bay area. that's one of the top stories. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. we begin, though, with breaking news in los gatos where newschopper2 is over a gas leak downtown that shut down highway 9 for a time. the highway patrol issued a sig- alert for highway 9 at santa cruz avenue due to the broken

line. but we just learned the road has reopened. these are live pictures, once again, from newschopper2 of the scene. pg&e says they are not sure about the cause of the break but the leak has been capped. a chase bank next to the bank was briefly evacuated. this was first reported just after 10:30. once again, a gas leak in los gatos this morning. the bay area's bid to host the super bowl just got a boost during the past two hours. new at noon, ktvu's sal castanedo joins us live to let us know the familiar names joining the effort. >> reporter: you said it. today at city hall some pretty big names participated in a meeting to try to secure the bay area's bid for the super bowl. now, bay area leaders are pulling out some nfl stars in its bid to host super bowl l. today mayor lee announced the

2000 new high-profile members of the team. >> it's my privilege to co a- announce -- co-announce two people, george receiveert and steve young, they -- seifert and steve young, they don't need introduction but i love to be able to mention them. >> reporter: both men say they want to help in any way they can to bring the big name to the bay area. >> it was, i believe in 1967 that the first super bowl was played in los angeles, california. it seems only fitting now that the nfl bring the 50th super bowl to northern california in the san francisco bay area. >> think about what we feel about the bay area. i mean, that's why it's one of

the number one destination areas in the world. it makes total sense. they don't need me to do this. >> reporter: the new stadium has a lot to do with this. a lot of seem say there's no way the bay area would be in contention to host the super bowl if the 49ers were still playing at candlestick. they are also playing up the tech connection to the bay area and they also say the game will have an economic impact to have the entire region involved. >> we know that every hotel room and every restaurant between here and san jose will be filled and that the entire region will come together and benefit tremendously from the hosting of the super bowl. >> reporter: now, the 49ers and the bay area will make their presentation in may. their formal presentation. they are competing against miami. if they don't win this time, there's a possibility that they could host super bowl li which they are also in congestion for. they will find out later this

year. live in san francisco, sal castanedo, ktvu channel 2 news. a san francisco redevelopment deal worth almost $2 billion has reportedly fallen through. the agreement was between china development corporation and len arcorporation. it would -- lenar corporation. it would have brought 1200 homes to the naval shipyard and high-rise buildings to treasure lie nd -- island. ed lee is taking a positive spin on the state of the redevelopment plan. >> i don't think it's fueling apart. i just think we don't have the funding yet from the sources that we had previously wanted to have. >> according to the chronicle, the deal collapsed because of unresolved tax issues and demands by the chinese for more control of the project. now, this news comes one day after the city of oakland unveiled a major development project for the city's waterfront funded in part by a chinese investment group. the project would be located at

brookline basin, a 65-acre piece of land along the estuary of jack london square. the chinese group is putting up $1.5 billion for the development that would include more than 3,000 units, a marina and some parks. there's a labor dispute in san francisco involving ucsf. coming up in about 12 minutes, why employees went on strike this morning because of who showed up at the job site. san francisco police chief greg suhr is giving up his push to arm officers with stun guns. he withdrew his proposal. chief sur said officers need sob -- chief suhr said officers need to be armed. the decision leaves san francisco as one of the last major cities in the country that does not arm its police

with stun guns. suspected carjackers running from the highway patrol caused this watery scene in san francisco. it happened just after 3:00 a.m. at van ness and union street. the nissan that hit the hydrant also crashed into a minibus -- or rather a muni bus. the chp says the car was carjacked a few days ago in modesto. officers spotted it this morning and that's when the chase began. the suspects ran from the scene after the crash. vallejo police are investigating a scene that left four people wounded. police responded to shots fired at 10:00 last night on mini drive. that's not far from sonoma boulevard. police say someone in a car pulled a gun and opened fire. it may have been as many as two gunmen. more than 30 cases were found at the scene.

they were large caliber pistols and police say the victims are not cooperating with the investigation. >> we had contact with the victims last night and they were less than forthcoming. they have an idea who they were and don't necessarily wanted to say who they were. >> the four wounded people are all expected to survive. active military veterans are getting some help today in finding a job. new at noon, christien kafton is live in san jose with more of the companies involved in this job fair. good afternoon. >> reporter: we're here at the american legion post 318 here on minnesota avenue in san jose where veterans are getting the opportunity to meet with employers face to face. organizers say this gives employers a chance to see for themselves how the skills they learned in the service can be translated to the private sector. >> what we found, employers who are looking to hire don't realize what amazing skillsets

and leadership potential and leadership skills that veterans bring to the table. >> reporter: veterans met with law enforcement, airline companies, national and retail chains and restaurant chains. the latest day ba from the labor statistics shows that the jobs outlook seems to be improving for veterans. the unemployment level dropped to 9.9% last year. veterans tell us they have very marketable skills to offer. >> we found employers looking to hire don't realize what amazing skillsets and leadership potential and leadership skills that veterans bring to the table. >> the scope of what you learn is way beyond just a grunt worker. you think he's an infantry guy. he's a private. what dos he know? well, he knows a lot. >> reporter: this job fair runs through 1:00 this afternoon. it's opened to all veterans, active and retired and their

spouses. if you miss out on this one, there will be another jobs fair on april 30th. jade hernandez is standing just about 20 yards away from me. she's talking to employers and talking to veterans. she'll have more on this story at 6:00. we're live in san jose, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. >> reporter: we're live at oakland high school where a student is just about to be arrested on the football field. but it's all a re-enactment for the school's 15-minute program. we'll explain just ahead. you probably enjoyed the very warm weather. but it's over now. mark tamayo is here with the specifics on the changes ahead. and an investigation at a bay area school after a teacher is accused of abuse.

two people are dead and more than 40 others are injured after a bus crash in irving, texas. the charter bus careened off a highway and flipped onto its side. it was on its way to a casino in oklahoma. witnesses say the bus suddenly weaved across the busy highway and struck two concrete barriers before flipping over. it's not known what caused the driver to lose control of the bus. a program that's aimed at opening teens' eyes about the

consequences of drunk driving came to one oakland high school for the first time in a long time. new at noon, lorraine blanco is live from reaction from students on a dramatic re- enactment. >> reporter: this program is meant to shock students into thinking twice before they drink and drive. you can see what looks like a real crash scene behind me, broken glass, a deployed air bag with blood on it. with the chp, police and paramedics all involved, the scene is very realistic. the drunk driving re-enactment started with a 911 call and chp rushing to the scene at oakland high school's football field. the students got to watch the aftermath of bad decisions, complete with emergency vehicles, wrecked cars and bloody victims. we talked to one student acting in this presentation. >> it's easy to relate. it's easier to relate when you have something in your own age

group rather than somebody telling you not to drink and drive when somebody older. >> reporter: tomorrow the students will see what the drunk driver would have to go through in jail and in court. officers will also talk to the students the dangers of distracted drive driferg -- distracted driving. the collisions are just as severe. the effects on people's lives are just as bad with the distracted driving. we try to make sure they understand, distracted driving is not just using our cell phone but also drinking and driving, eating and driving, playing on your cell phone, reading the newspaper. >> reporter: this is the first time oakland high school has participated from this every 15- minutes' program in more than a decade. the event was organized by

highland hospital. it's still going on and is expected to last another half- hour. lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. a teacher at concord's middle school is leave after accusations she hit a student. a cell phone video emerged that appears to show the teacher tapping the student with a rolled up paper. the students laugh. the mount diablo school district is investigating. this morning a volunteer defended the teacher. >> i've been on field trips with her. i volunteer for field trips and she's a great -- she does extra kids for kids -- extra for kid. she's a great teacher. i believe the person who posted it had -- said inflam tari words that -- inflammatory words didn't realize how inflammatory they could be. >> the district said the student who recorded the video did so in violation against cell phones in a class and that

student could now face displennary measures. more than 200 students at deer valley high school are being tested for tuberculosis. contra costa health services is testing anyone who may have come into contact with the student who recently had tb. that includes anyone who shared a class or was in a club with the infected student. health officials say the risk of another student contracting the disease is only about 10%. there is a new development in the fatal shooting of a south bay paramedic in oakland. police say they have found a car used by the gunman. 34-year-old quinn boyer was shot in the head last tuesday at a stop sign on keller avenue in the oakland hills. he died in a hospital two days later. police say they found the car in east oakland near horace mann elementary school one day after the shooting. a victim in the ingleside neighborhood is not cooperating

with police after shots rang out on brighton and holloway avenues. one bullet hit him in the leg. his wounds are not considered life-threatening. investigators are not releasing any suspect information. there was a procedural victory in the u.s. senate for gun control supporters. two-thirds of the senate voted to begin debating several proposals, including background checks for buyers and tougher laws for gun sales. 16 republicans broke ranks and voted along with the democrats. critics say the proposals could violent the rights of lawful gun owners. a federal judge in oakland is given the go ahead for a lawsuit by inmates over conditions and practices at pelican bay state prison. the suit says the inmates in the security housing unit are held in solitary confinement in concrete cells with no windows. they can spend a decade or more

in the unit. lawyers for the inmates say that's unconstitutional because it's cruel and unusual punishment. the trial on the suit is at least a year away. union members set up a picket line this morning around uc san francisco's mission bay project because they say the contractor is using nonunion employees. with trucks honking, members of local 38 manned a picket line around the project aimed at shutting it down. the union represents pipe fit, electricians and sheet metal workers and accuse the contractor of bringing in seven nonunion workers. >> it's bad for me and it's also bad for our economy because they don't get paid what we get paid. they are typically from out of state or from somewhere else. the money doesn't stand here. >> our "mornings on 2" crew went on site to ask the

contractor for a response but they were ordered off the site. uc berkeley was showing off its newly ren nateed electronics design lab. a $2.2 million gift from texas instruments paid for this. it gives them a state of the art lab where undergraduates to make innovative new projects. they hope to reverse the trend in which students have been gravitating towards developing software instead of hardware. >> we need to continue to develop better and better technology. so students need to be trained on the hardware side as well as the software side. well, a lot of sunshine across most of the bay area this thursday afternoon of the here's our live camera looking out toward the bay bridge and the bay waters. clear skies here. we are some patchy fog in the

shoreline. it's been breaking up a little bit. as far as the latest right now on stormtracker, no storms out there, just a few lingering fog patches as you can pick out on the coastline and a few clouds approaching the region, high clouds streaming from the north and the west. as far as current temperatures, it's cooler than yesterday. no more 80s in the forecast. warmest locations on track. still warm in the low to mid- 70s. walnut creek, 70 degrees. san jose, 63. downtown santa rosa, 68. it's the airport that's 68 degrees. as far as wind speeds a bit of a breeze. you can see some of the wind sensors, the strongest out towards sfo. out of the west, sustained at 23 miles an hour. that arrow represents the wind coming out of the west. oakland 13 and fairfield not extreme wind, winds around 7 miles an hour. for today, partly sunny skies. a bit of a breeze. tomorrow warmer. the weekend will be dry. but you will notice a change

for the temperatures over the weekend. a weak system moving from the north and the west. over the next few hours, when you look up to the skies, you will see a few high clouds basically coming from this system. no raindrops expected but at least partly sunny skies. once this system moves through, we're gonna woorm up the temperatures a -- warm up the temperatures a little bit for friday and saturday. saturday will be the warmest day of the weekend. basically 60s and 70s. here's our forecast model showing you a few high clouds and then low clouds regrouping toll morning around 5:00 and then clearing around 11:00 and noon tomorrow afternoon. everybody coming down at least a good 6 to 12 degrees from the readings. san francisco 63. san jose forecast high 71. half moon bay, we'll go about 60 degrees this afternoon. here's a look ahead to your forecast. your weekend rapidly approaching. you will notice temperatures we raise them a few degrees for

friday and saturday. sunday we cool things off and tori, we could be tracting some stronger winds. not as strong as last week. but still we could have gusty winds developing sunday night and into monday morning. we'll have to keep an eye on that. you can count on a cooldown by monday. looking pretty good this afternoon although a little bit cooler. >> tu, mark. police in pleasanton are studying surveillance video after a burglary at the j.c. penney store. the burglary happened at 2:00 a.m. at the stoneridge mall. someone smashed several jewelry cases and got away with multiple items. at this point, the investigators don't know whether the burglar gained access through an unlocked door or broke in. so far, no arrests have been made. the commissioner of major league baseball has declined a request from san jose mayor chuck reed for a face-to-face meeting. mayor reed wanted to meet with

major indeaths are edging up. rightate, ross and other retailers rising after turning in better sales. investors getting encouragement from a surprising drop in claims for unemployment benefits last week. taking a live look, the dow is up 53. the nasdaq is up 1. s&p up 5. six automakers including toyota, honda and nissan are recalling nearly 3.4 million older model vehicles worldwide. there is a problem with their passenger side air bags. the inflater could explode sending plastic pieces flying. most of the affected model years appear to be between 2000 and 2004. so far, no injuries have been reported. the ktvu web staff is putting together a list of the vehicles involved in the recall. we'll post that for you shortly an ktvu.com. the san francisco zoo's newest big cat goes on display tomorrow for the first time.
