and good morning, everyone. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, april 13th, i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. let's check in with rosemary orosco for what this weekend has in store. >> we are going to settle into a cooler breezier pattern. today, a subtle change. we're waking up with patchy fog, another chilly start. temperatures very similar to yesterday. for the afternoon, the minor cooling especially along the coast, i expect an afternoon sea breeze with the breeze blows in nyas, so will continue to watch that for you, and i have the numbers for you. we'll talk about sunday as well. looks to be the cooler breezier day of the two-day weekend. more on that coming up. >> and we begin with developing news. we have new video from the scene of a plane crash on the indonesian resort island of bali. a commercial jet carrying more than 100 passengers and crew went down into the sea this morning. katie is live in the newsroom with morton crash that has injured close to a dozen people. >> mike, investigators say the plane overshot the runway and

crashed into the ocean from a height of around 160 feet. you can see in this video from a local tv station, metro tv, the plane is cracked in half. passengers on board the plane say there was screaming and panic when the plane struck the ocean. some even feared they would drown. one passenger told reporters he managed to get out of an emergency door and swim to safety before rescue crews arrived. we're told the plane carried 101 passengers and seven crew members. rescue crews say all are accounted for and 22 passengers were taken to local hospitals. investigators are still working to figure out how and why the lion airplane went down. the airline is a low-cost carrier holding 45% of the market share in indonesian. actually a bay area reporter is vacationing in bali right now. he said he decided to take another airline after researching lion air's record. we're working to contact him and bring you more details from the catch seen. katie utehs, ktvu.

back in the bay area, a man is behind bars in connection with a fatal shooting in san francisco. it happened this morning in the area of pacific avenue and taylor street near chinatown. officers received a report of a dead body. investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a heating argument. police say the suspect was a 55- year-old man while the victim was in his early 20s. >> some confrontation in the apartment building between two people, and one person was shot. >> no one else was injured in the shooting. police are interviewing witnesses to try to find a motive for the attack. a gun show at the cow palace is about to get under way and if legislators get their way it could be one of the last at that spot. alex savage is live with more on today's show. alex. >> reporter: well, good morning. organizers expect huge crowds here at the cross roads of the west gun show that gets under way later on this morning. a lot of people concerned about tighter gun regulations and here we're across the street from the cow palace as you can

see. a lot of people pulling into the parking lot this morning. the doors open here at 9:00. for many the big draw isn't actually even the guns. it's the ammo. bullets have been in short supply at some traditional outlets lately, but the cross roads owner is promising there will be plenty of ammunition available this weekend. organizers say their gun shows have become more popular recently, as congress has looked at stricter gun laws following the newtown school shooting. next week, lawmakers will start debating a bill requiring universal background checks for all gun purchases. although here in california, we already do criminal background checks on all gun buyers, including those making purchases at gun shows like this one. now, this morning i was able to reach an organizer a short time ago. we are hoping to speak later on this morning with the owner of the crossroads of the west gun show about those proposed regulations. again, this is a gun show that gets under way this weekend at the cow palace. this is the second of five gun

shows that will happen here this year. now, coming up at 7:30, we'll tell you about a gun buy-back that's happening not far away from this gun show. at 7:30. for now live in daly city, alex savage, ktvu. and a unique move this morning's weekly presidential address was delivered by a mother who lost a son in the newtown, connecticut school shooting. >> our younger son ben, age 6, was murdered in his first grade classroom on december 14th, exactly four months ago this weekend. to us, it feels as if it happened just yesterday. and in the four months since we lost our loved ones, thousands of other americans have died at the end of a gun. but that's only >> francine wheeler was joined by her husband david. their six-year-old son ben was among the 20 first graders killed at sandy hook. the wheelers say this is time

for congress to act to prevent more families from becoming victims of gun violence. new developments in a high profile sexual assault case in the south bay. prosecutors say 15-year-old audrie potts had been drinking and was unconscious when she was attacked and sexually assaulted by three 16-year-old boys at a house party in saratoga last september. police say after the attack, the boys e-mailed and texted photos of the assault to kids at their high school. potts' family says she was distraught and committed suicide eight days later. the teens were cited in september but released on misdemeanor charges. >> in the case of audrey, she was terrorized. here is a 15-year-old dealing with being sexually assaulted by many boys who were her friends. >> attorneys for the accused boys released this statement. it reads this part: much of what has been reported of the last several days is inaccurate. most disturbing is the attempt to link audrey's suicide to these specific actions of these three boys. and the teens will make their first court appearance tuesday

morning. p otts's family want the teens tried as adults and they released the statement, quote we suspect the boys who we believe are responsible for audrey's death took deliberate steps to destroy evidence and interfere with the police investigation. end quote. potts family also plans to hold a news conference on monday. two of the boys accused were arrested at saratoga high. the other suspect had just recently transferred to christopher high school in gilroy. police say they arrested a 16- year-old sophomore during first period pe on thursday. classmates say they didn't know about the allegation. however close friends are coming to his defense. >> i spoke to his dad. he said what he's accused of. i don't believe it one bit. >> the principal at christopher high declined to talk to us on camera. but in a statement called the 16-year-old suspect a good kid and good student. new information now regarding dozens of faulty bolts on the new eastern span of the bay bridge. the dyson corporation of ohio manufactured the parts, and according to the sacramento bee, one year before the giant

bolts were supplied, caltrans flagged the company for various deficiencies in manufacturing and paperwork. although -- although dyson reported lie failed some tests, caltrans gave it a so-called contingency plan. more than 30 bolts have snapped and need to be replaced or repaired. >>this morning hundreds of volunteers will be cleaning up the bay area. today is the 16th annual earth day restoration and cleanup project. each year volunteers clean state parks all across california. this morning bay area volunteers 4r-b at state parks making improvements to campsites, clearing vegetation and cleaning up trash. and let's see what kind of day they should expect. rosemary, i heard the wind may be making an appearance this weekend. >> you are right. the winds will be coming back. each passing day temperatures fall just slightly, and the winds will be picking up. i see the windiest day perhaps being monday. today an eastern sea breeze. that n shore breeze will bring gusty conditions to the coast.

along if coastline it's going to be brisk. if you are inland and enjoying 77 degrees, that breeze may actually feel pretty good in the afternoon. so really depending on where you're at, a live look at jack london square and the annual sailboat show continues for today. calm conditions in oakland and santa rosa, an onshore breeze at s.s.o., 12 miles per hour. livermore with a northwesterly breeze at 5. for the afternoon, i do expect anywhere from 10 to 20 miles per hour. that is a little breezy, especially along the coastline where it could actually pick up to about 30. so expect that if you're going to the beach for the afternoon. 44 in napa right now, 44 in navarro, 44 santa rosa. those are the cooler numbers right now. upper 40s to low 50s around the bay area. it is a lot like yesterday morning, a bit of a chill in the air stepping outside early if you're going for a run may actually feel pretty good. if you're headed to the farmers market, bring a jacket. this system will continue to the east, but again, helping to kick up our breeze, bringing us

a few high clouds. you can see on the satellite view. waking up with patchy low clouds along the coastline, high clouds around the area. we will have low clouds this morning, the onshore breeze for the afternoon. temperatures, just a subtle cool-down for today. most of us may not even notice. in fact, i think it will be the coast that feels it first. 60 expected for pacifica this afternoon. 63 in the city of san francisco. head to the north bay feeling pretty good in santa rosa, 75 for you. the east bay, along the shore line we have upper 60s in oakland, we have 76 for concord, and upper 70s in antioc. into the santa clara valley, numbers looking like this for you, 74 san jose, 77 morgan hill. 67 in santa cruz. a nice day for you mountain view, 70 degrees in the afternoon. the extended forecast shows you a cooling trend as we get into sunday, looks to be the cooler day. low 70s into the forecast for the afternoon. and the breezy conditions. this system i showed you would on the pacific satellite view,

another will follow. and it looks like the coolest, windiest day will be on monday. temperatures into the upper 60s. look at the overnight lows. i want to point that out, as we get back to work on monday, could be a chilly start. widespread 30s in the forecast and by tuesday, wednesday, back to upper 70s. if you're going to see the a's play this afternoon, that forecast is coming up. if you're driving in the north bay today, you may run into some delays. the chp is rolling traffic breaks on southbound 101 between marin city and the golden gate bridge until noon today. here is a look at our traffic map. a lot of green on the board and that means it is good out there. no big problems to report. the closure again on 101 in marin is to allow geologists to inspect a hillside in the area. well, a gun owned by former police officer and fugitive christopher dorner is up for sale. where the proceeds are supposed to go and why some of his victims' families are not happy about it. >> plus the big announcement

welcome back. this is a live look there at the bay bridge this morning. rise and shine. a little bit of patchy fog, partly cloudy skies for today, and fair weather in the forecast. new this morning, pope francis marked his first month as pope by trying to revamp the vatican bureaucracy. he invited nine cardinals from around the world to an advisory board to help him run the catholic church. the group will also propose reforms. analysts say pope francis is

trying to move the church forward after a reported plot by senior catholic officials to out someone at gay. high level meetings on how to handle north korea. secretary kerry went to beijing and met the chinese president. he hopes beijing can diffuse the growing tensions with north korea. an american official speaking on the condition of an anymore tee warns the u.s. may try to shoot the missile down if its trajectory suggests it could threaten the u.s.o. basically rim ally. the retrial of hoss knee mubarak ended in minutes. he appeared in court on a rolling bed wearing brown tinted sunglasses. an appeals court overturned his life sentence citing shoddy procedures. this morning's session wrapped up quickly when the judge recused himself. no reason given. a gun previously owned by christopher dorner is being auctioned off by a las vegas pawnshop. dorner is the former lapd

officer who killed four people including a sheriff's deputy and a police officer before killing himself. now a revolver he sold to the pawnshop is available for purchase. the bidding is just over $1000. there is 10 days left to the auction. the pawnshop says all proceeds will go to the victims' families but some families say the auction is mother bid and they are not interested in the money. a former oakland tribune photographer who was shot to death in oakland will be laid to rest. 54-year-old lionel pfluger was hit by a stray bullet a week ago. one man has been charged with murder but police are looking for a second gun movement a public service will be held today at noon in oakland. and tonight, there will be a vigil to bring attention to the number of officer-involved shoot information the bay area. the family of 26-year-old amos smith is organizing that vigil. smith was shot and killed by union city police last month. two officers said they shot smith because he pulled a gun

on them during a traffic stop near dire street. the vigil will be held at the intersection at 6:30 tonight. san jose police have made an arrest in connection with a double homicide last year that left three children without their parents. pedro medina was arrested in mexico this week. he is expected to be extradited back to san jose. medina is accused of killing pedro and mary bell jimenez in san jose. their three children were home at the time of the shootings but were not harmed. relatives say medina and maribel had dated in the past. the family of a missing hayward man needs help to find him. 34-year-old nigel jay hasn't been seen or heard from in six days. he was last seen in alameda last sunday. jay's sister says he was supposed to deliver medicine to his father that day but never made it. he was also planning to return a rental car to a lot near the oakland airport but police found the car abandoned on wednesday. >> oakland p.d.

mentioned that the vehicle was unlocked but wasn't rummaged through. there was nothing suspicious inside the vehicle. nothing was missing or out of place. >> jay's sister says her brother is active on facebook but his account hasn't been updated sisince he disappeared and his cell phone is off. anyone with information about nigel jay is asked to call hayward police. officials in southern california are warning gay men to look out for symptoms of bacterial meningitis. that comes after a 33-year-old man was sickened by the illness. he was diagnosed three days ago, and is now in a coma. over easter weekend, that man attended the annual white party in palm springs, which is an event that draws thousands of gay men from across the country. fests are being done to see if that strain is similar to a minute gites strain that circulating around the gay community in new york city. that has affected 22 people and killed seven since 2010. symptoms of the illness can initially resemble the flu. >> and the latest strain of the bird flu virus has hit beijing, china. a seven-year-old girl contracted the strain.

her parents work in the live poultry business and she was admitted to the hospital on thursday with symptoms including fever, sore throat, and a headache. this is the first time there has been a confirmed case of bird flu outside of eastern china. it has killed so far 11 people and sickened 32 others. the seattle investors hoping to buy and relocate the sacramento kings have upped the ante. chris hansen and steve balmer made a deal with the maloof family to raise the purchase prize by $25 million. the announcement came after a sacramento group said it would match hansen's original offer. that group loof's deadline to submit a bid. the n.b.a. board of governors may decide the kings' fate next week. a season-ending injury to kobe bryant overshadowed the thrilling game last night between the warriors and lakers. the lakers won 118-116. steph curry racked up 47 points but it wasn't enough. while the warriors have already made the playoffs, they're battling for seeding. they are currently in sixth

place. a half game ahead of houston. the regular season ends on wednesday. kobe bryant will get an mri today, but the lakers are pretty sure he tore his left achilles tendon. bryant said he was just making a move he's made a million times, and he goes down. he says he felt it pop. the 34-year-old called the injury the worst of his career and he is going to need months of recovery and rehabilitation. on his twitter page, bryant wrote, random tears of devastation and doubt mixed with inner determination and will. some say their wool is better than cashmere. the hundreds of animals packing the fair grounds in pleasanton this weekend. >> and a powerful explosion rocked a wisconsin neighborhood. how neighbors described the shaking and damage left behind. minor changes in the forecast for your saturday. more notable changes coming on sunday. a look at your weekend coming up. >> i don't know what the heck happened. it just blew up. >> 911 operators were flooded with calls after this house suddenly exploded in wisconsin. it happened at 5 a.m. on thursday. the house was under construction, so no one was inside at the time. the force of the blast could be felt throughout the entire neighborhood. one person was hurt when items from above her bed fell during the explosion, and hit her on the head. >> when your wife says that you're bleeding, after i turned the light on i seen her whole face and her hair and everything full of blood. >> the woman had a few cuts but was not seriously hurt. if explosion is still being investigated but firefighters say they believe it was caused by a gas leak. today, miami's metro zoo is launching the exotic pet amnesty program. today people can turn in their snakes, birds or other exotic animals that they either don't want or can no longer care for. the zoo says they're trying to stop people from releasing the animals into the wild, because they say those animals actually reproduce after they're released and that causes problems for the state's native

stunning video this morning from bali. a jet full of passengers makes a crash landing and everyone survives. good morning, everyone. welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. that plane overshot the runway and that's how it ended up in the sea. the jet was headed from an indonesian province to the resort island of bali when it

crashed. the aircraft had approximately 101 passengers and seven crew members. all of them were rescued. about two dozen people were hurt, and the plane is currently resting in shallow water. the cause of that accident is still under investigation. the boeing 737 belonged to lion air which is a rapidly growing carrier with a heavy presence in indonesia. these messages are reminiscent of that miracle on the hudson. this was january 15th of 2009, when danville pilot chesley sully sullenberger safely landed his u.s. airways jet on new york's hudson river. the plane made an emergency landing after hitting a flock of geese moments after takeoff. all 150 people on board survived, and since that memorable event, 10 babies have been born to passengers on that plane. sullenberger calls the kids special, special kids. a cruise ship turned into a rescue vessel twice in one day. how disney and carnival cruise ships came to the rescue in two different incidents off the florida keys.

today the peninsula finds itself in the middle of the gun control debate. the area will host both a gun buy-back event as well as a gun show. alex savage is live this morning from outside the cow palace with more on the story. alex. >> reporter: we have the gun show here at the cow palace, and then the gun buy-back. i'll explain that in a little bit. first, what's going on here across the street at the cow palace. as we push in here, you may be able to see, there is a pretty good sized line that's already forming in the parking lot this morning. the doors open, 9:00 for the crossroads of the west gun show. this is the second of five shows they're holding at the cow palace this year. just onto the crossroads representative, he told me they are expecting maybe 10,000 people to attend this weekend's event. but one state law maker in particular is trying to end gun shows like this one at the cow palace. senator mark leno pushing a bill that would require officials in san mateo and san francisco counties to approve gun shows here, something that

would be unlikely to happen. the cow palace is on state property that straddles both of those counties. meantime, later on this morning in san mateo, police and county officials will be holding a gun buy-back event. representative jackie spear will be on hand there. officials will offer up $100 for people who turn in handguns and $200 for people who turn in their assault weapons. in san mateo county, they held a similar gun buy-back event back in january. they collected 680 guns at that time. that event gets started at 9:00 this morning, and goes until noon today. and again, as we bring you back out live to the cow palace, this gun show also starts at 9:00 today. we are working on talking with the owner of the crossroads of the west gun show and hope to have him later on on mornings on 2. live this morning in daily city. alex savage. classes are scheduled to resume at scotts detail high

school on monday after thursday's threat. someone threatened a message on facebook threatening to shoot up the school. the post was made from a fake facebook account. police are looking for a man who tried to kidnap a five- year-old boy in front of an elementary school thursday after in front of burke holter elementary school. police say the stranger approached the boy and tried to pick him up, but a staff member intervened, and the man ran away. the suspect is described as an african american man in his mid 30s. about 5 feet 10, 170 pounds with a short buzz cut hair style. an act of kindness landed a sacramento man in the hospital with seven stab wounds. jonathan robinson is speaking for the first time after spending the last two weeks in a coma. he is recovering after being attacked for trying to stop two men from bullying children. he says after telling them to stop, the men turned on him. one of them with a knife. >> they had a chance to stop it

multiple times. but they were nonstop malicious. >> police have arrested kenny ellis and araberto mendoza for the attack. robinson who suffered collapsed lung says he has a long road to recovery but says he is glad he not hesitate to do it again. san jose police arrested two transients for killing a man whose body was set on fire. police i have ad the two men as 25-year-old steven burns, and christopher james, also 25. investigators say burns stabbed the victim, and james was an accessory. authorities say a man's burning body was found off highway 85 on tuesday night. his identity has not been released, but it's believed he was also a transient. police say there was an argument. the victim was stabbed and later set on fire. four families in san leandro are being helped by the red cross this morning. after a fire destroyed their apartment. a neighbor across the street shot this video of those intense flames. it started around 6:00 last

night at a fourplex on 144th avenue. everyone made it out safely. >> we had one person complaining of smoke inhalation. they were treated at the cite. and chose not to go to the hospital. >> firefighters say the unit where the fire started was gutted and another unit was damaged. the cause is being investigated. san lorenzo high school student killed while playing on the train tracks 4r-b laid to rest next week. 15-year-old austin price was hit by a train thursday evening. deputies say price and two friends were playing chicken with an amtrak train when he was hit. yesterday friends dropped off flowers and wrote messages to remember him >> he was friendly with everyone. he didn't care who you were. he'd be friendly, give you a hug. >> it's real tough. it's not -- it's not the same without him. >> services for price have been scheduled for wednesday. san francisco mayor ed lee unveiled the new multi million dollar plan to reduce the rising number of pedestrian deaths. he made that announcement

during the city's first ever walk to work day yesterday. the plan includes upgrades to curbs and crosswalks and increased crossing times at intersections. san francisco had 17 pedestrian fatalities in 2011. 20 last year. and 6 in the first four months of this year. that includes a 50-year-old woman killed wednesday in a crosswalk. days after former santa clara county supervisor shortage sherakawa said he was getting help for a gambling addiction, he apparently went gambling. three days after he turned himself in last month, he went to a casino near sacramento. he has pleaded guilty to 12 criminal charges for using $130,000 in public and campaign funds to feed his addiction. a hearing is set for later this month to set a date for sentencing. some of california's most powerful democrats are in sacramento this weekend. it's day 2 of the state party convention and seminars begin in just about an hour. speakers include u.s. house minority leader nancy pelosi, state attorney general, and

a car crashed into a power pole in hayward. it happened just before 6 this morning on industrial boulevard east of asper ian. a car hit a fire hydrant and a high tension pole that runs about 1200 volts. police say the car was stolen, the drivers ran away. they've restored power to 600 customers, but 450 or so still don't have power and crews have to replace that pole. that could take all day. a strong earthquake shook parts of japan overnight, injuring at least 23 people. 6.3 quake struck near the southwestern city of kobi. it cracked walls and destroyed some homes. of the 23 people hurt, seven are in serious condition. parts of the midwest are bracing for a second round of storms today following a series of deadly tornadoes. the first storm ripped through homes and left thousands without power. garrett teney has a look at the damage. >> reporter: this amateur video show asthmas i have twister in

mississippi. the funnel cloud spotted in the eastern part of the state spawned by a wicked spring storm that has covered a good chunk of the country. mississippi governor phil bryant declaring a state of emergency in two of the hardest hit counties where the tornado is believed to have left its mark, sledding homes and structures, snapping trees and blocking roads. area officials dealing with at least one death and a number of injuries. >> we're assessing the area to make sure that everybody injured is taken care of. >> reporter: in neighboring alabama crews are trying to restore power to folks in the dark. high winds ripped trees from their roots spreading debris all over and doused the area with rain. georgia is a similar scene of repairs and recovery. this business in rome, georgia has its roof ripped off exposing the inside to the elements. >> three or four inches of water in the warehouse, showroom, office area. basic stuff. >> reporter: the storm started its rampage on wednesday, in the nation's mid section, unleashing an ef2 tornado in a suburb of st. louis, missouri. from the air the extent of the damage can be realized.

>> that was garrett teney reporting. the national weather service confirms 12 tornadoes have touched down in recent days. the next storm could bring a foot of snow. the government is giving some superstorm sandy victims a break on their mortgage payments. federal mortgage payment relief for the victims has been extended up to one year. the extension affects more than 200,000 homeowners with federally backed loans whose homes were damaged in the storm. the previous extension was set to expire on the 30th. sandy is going into retirement. the world meter logical organization is taking sandy off from the official list of names for atlantic tropical storms. the organization says is storm caused so much destruction last october, officials decided it should be removed from the rotating list. it was due on the list again in the year 2018. other names on the retired list include ike and katrina. carnival cruise says it doesn't have to repay the federal government for coasts associated with rescuing the

triumph. it cost about 780,000 to bring the ship to shore. carnival released a letter saying the government is under obligation to assist when there's trouble at see. >>two cruise ships made unexpected stops off the florida keys to rescue migrant rafters from cuba. yesterday a carnival ship rescued 13 people from a raft 40 miles from key west. in a separate incident a disney wonder ship picked up eight people in that same area. none of the rafters were hurt and the cruise ships gave them food and water. the coast guard said it's likely they'll be returned to cuba. marco rubio will hit the airways tomorrow to push for immigration reform. the potential 2016 presidential candidate will appear on five sunday talk shows and two spanish language networks. he is part of the so-called gang of eight, senators who are crafting a bipartisan immigration bill. john mccain says he is optimistic it will eventually

admits the oil giant made mistakes regarding its richmond refinery. the plant caught fire last august after a leak in a crude oil unit. more than 15,000 people were said to be sickened by heavy smoke in the area. chevron released a 58-page report admitting mistakes for the past decade. investigators found 11 serious and willful violations. some lawmakers say the company just did not do enough to correct past problems. >> chevron is estimated to make over a million dollars a minute. they can afford to fix their corroded pipes >> chevron is promising to improve inspections, internal communication, analysis and worker training. some of the issues uncovered in the investigation. we have posted the entire report from chevron on our website. go to ktvu.com and click on the link in the hot topics section. a mountain view post office will be renamed in honor of fallen hometown hero today. army lieutenant kenneth ballard was killed in iraq in 2004.

a chain reaction accident in san francisco sent one woman to the hospital. one of the historic streetcars rear-ended a car, then three other cars collided. that accident happened yesterday morning on market street in sanchez in the castro district. a muni spokesman says the driver of the car stopped suddenly at a light and the streetcar hits it. construction work may cause some delays at sfo this weekend. one of the main runways is temporarily closed for federal lehman dated updates. the runway is going to remain shut down until 8:00 monday morning, so the number of planes that arrive per hour will be dut in half. sfo is encouraging travelers to check flight statuses ahead of time. in sonoma county, federally protected birds are apparently being killed off in droves by a net that was hung up by cal advance to keep them safe. the nets were put up near highway 101 back in february. since then dozens of birds have

overshot the runway, and dropped from an altitude of around 160 feet. now, we're told on board there were 101 passengers, and seven crew members. investigators are still trying to figure out why the lion airplane went down. and these images, reminiscent of remember this? the miracle on the hudson. it was january 15th, 2009, when danville pilot chesley sully sullenberger landed his u.s. airways jet safely on the new york hudson river. the plane had to make an emergency landing because it hit a flock of geese moments after takeoff. all 155 people on board survived. and since that memorable event, 10 babies have been born to passengers from that plane. sullenberger calls those children special, special kids. time for the bay area. a man is in jail in connection to a fatal shooting in san francisco that happened just before 2:30 this morning near pacific avenue and taylor street. officers received a report of a body on the ground. when they arrived at the scene they found a man in his early

20s dead from gun shot wounds. investigators say they believe the shooting stemmed from a heated argument. police say the suspect is a 55- year-old man. >> some kind of confrontation in the apartment building between two people. and one person was shot. >> no one else was injured in the shooting. police are now in the process of interviewing witnesses. san jose police have made an arrest in connection with a double homicide last year that left three children without their parents. pedro medina was arrested in guadalajara, mexico this week. he is expected to be extradited back to san jose soon. medina is accused of killing pedro and maribel jimenez on july 22. the two were shot to death. their three children were home at the time of the shooting but were not harmed. relatives say medina and maribel had dated in the past. a former oakland tribune photographer will be laid to rest today. 54-year-old lion pfluger was

hit by a stray bullet as he was driving home last week. one man has been charged with murder but police are looking for a second gunman. a public service will be held today at noon in oakland. three saratoga boys accused of sexual assault and photographing the crime may face charges as adults. family members of the victims say the alleged crime led the 15-year-old victim to take her own live. katie udehs live in the newsroom. >> reporter: claw teen, potts family released a statement yesterday saying they believe the accused boys tried to destroy evidence. we spoke with investigators who say they've recovered computers and cell phones related to their case. the 16-year-olds are accused of sexually assaulting 15-year-old audrie potts at a house party in saratoga last september, and distributing pictures of the assault via e-mail and text. the potts family attorney says audrie couldn't cope with the whole school knowing what had happened. >> and that's hard enough to deal with, but then to be compounded with having her face rubbed in it, with the

reminders. >> reporter: potts committed suicide in los altos eight days later. in the wake of her death audrie's family created a facebook page where they released the statement accusing the boys of trying to destroy evidence and interfering with the police investigation. when we spoke with santa clara county sheriffs, who says they've searched dozens of search warrants and seized computers and cell phones. >> kids need to get smarter about -- first of all what's right and wrong, and second of all, this kind of a crime. how could anyone think it would be appropriate to share photographs from a crime? >> meanwhile, the attorneys for the boys accused in this released a statement saying much of what has been reported over the last several days is inaccurate. most disturbing is the attempt to link audrie's suicide to the specific actions of these boys. one of the suspects transferred to christopher high school in gilroy, where administrators reminded students to stay focused. >> they said that they'll be rumors around the school, and -- >> not to believe -- >> and it will come out sooner

pacific rim allies. beijing is also dealing with a health crisis. the first case of the latest strain of the bird flu has popped up in the capital city. a seven-year-old girl contracted the strain. her parents work in the live poultry business. she was admitted to the hospital on thursday with symptoms including a fever, sore throat and a headache. this is the first time there has been a confirmed case of the bird flu outside of eastern china, where the strain has so far killed 11 people and sickened 32 others. this morning's the retrial of hosni mubarak ended just minutes ago. the 84-year-old mubarak appeared in court on a rolling bed and wearing brown tinted glasses as you can see from this video. he had not been seen since his conviction last june. an appeals court overturned his life sentence citing shoddy procedures. however this morning's session wrapped up quickly when the judge recused himself. no reason was given. critics of america's drone program say it's turning people in the middle east against the u.s. the obama administration says the drone program has

families. but some of the families say the auction is morbid, and they are not interested in the money. tonight there will be a vigil to bring attention to the number of officer-involved shoot information the bay area. the family of 26-year-old amos smith is organizing the vigil. smith was shot and killed by union city police last month. two officers say they shot smith because he pulled a gun on him in a traffic shot near dire street and meteor way. the vigil will be held at that intersection tonight. a community barbecue is being held this afternoon in honor of allen bluford, the oakland man shot and killed by police last year. the barbecue begins at 1:00 today at arroyo park in east oakland. organizers will discuss the latest developments in the bluford case and other recent police shootings. san jose police arrested two transients for killing a man whose body was set on fire. police identified the two men as 25-year-old steven burns and christopher james, also 25. investigators say burns stabbed the victim and james was an

accessory. authorities say the man's burning body was found on tuesday night. his identity has not been released but it's believed he was also a transient. police say there was an argument. the victim was stabbed and later set on fire. the family of a missing hayward man is asking for help to find him. 34-year-old nigel jay hasn't been seen or heard from in six days. he was last seen at scolari's restaurant in alameda last sunday. jay's sister says he was supposed to deliver medicine to his father later that day but never made it. anyone with information about nigel jay is asked to call the hayward police. in 40 minutes the doors will open at a gun show at the cow palace. alex savage is live there now, where he just spoke to organizers about the show. alex. >> reporter: yeah. and certainly a popular one. these gun shows have grown in popularity ever since the new town school shooting prompted lawmakers to call for tighter gun laws. and right now, here at the cow palace where we are this morning, hundreds of people are lined up, waiting to get their

the deadline to file your income taxes, just two days away. federal and state income taxes must be filed by april 15th, which is this coming monday. according to the irs, 50 million americans waited until april to start their tax filing process. if you can't make the april 15th deadline, you can request a six-month extension to file. president obama has released his 2012 tax returns. the president and first lady paid a little more than $112,000 in taxes.

army lieutenant ken ballard was killed in iraq in 2004. during his service he received three bronze stars and a purple heart. congresswoman anna eshu authored legislation to name the post office on hope street after him. ballard is the only solder from mountain view to die in combat in iraq. in half moon bay, deputies are investigating a string of burglaries that seem to be connected. deputies say the burglars have entered several homes through unlocked garage doors or side doors. so far police haven't made any arrests. and they can out this surveillance video. stockton police trying to identify this man. he is shown peeking into the bedroom of a young girl. this video was captured by the family's home surveillance system. and the family says they don't recognize that man. police say one of the neighbors heard a noise outside her home and spotted that man as he took off on a mountain bike. police say they are pursuing several leads. facebook's new home app is

in sonoma county, federally protected birds are apparently being killed off in droves by a net that was hung up by caltrans to keep them safe.

those nets were put up at the petaluma river bridge near highway 101 back in february. since then, dozens of birds have gotten caught in the nets and died. the nets were supposed to dig courage migratory swallows from nesting there during construction of a three year freeway widening project. instead the nets have become a fatal trap for the state and federally protected birds. >> what good are laws are nobody's going to come out here and do something to stop the suffering? i'm watching a bird die up here. >> wildlife advocates say they want the nets removed. caltrans has acknowledged there is a problem with the netting but so far there's been no response on how it will be fixed. tiger woods was almost disqualified from the master's early this morning. officials took issue with his drop shot on hole 15 yesterday. that came after this shot, which goes and hits the pin and then rolls on into the water. there it goes. woods chose to play his next shot from that same area. he said he dropped the ball two yards back from the original shot.

at the weekend gun show at the cow palace. why people are lining up for more than just weapons. . good morning, and welcome to mornings on 2, saturday, april 13th. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. let's check in with rosemary for a look at the weekend forecast. breezy, or just windy today? >> breezy today, a little breezier tomorrow. windy on monday. today, subtle changes in most cases, which means you got another good looking day out there. partly cloudy skies, cool this morning. temperatures are already rebounding. for the afternoon, this minor cooling is especially near the coastline, where the afternoon seabreeze will pick up especially there into the second half of our weekend. cooling trend continuing. i'll have your numbers for you, coming up. . developing news now, lion air says the plane that crashed into the ocean near bali this morning was a new commercial jet. we have video of the plane wreckage and the latest on the

injuries from the crash. katie utis is live in the newsroom with details. >> reporter: mike, the number of injuries keeps declining from when we first learned about this crash several hours ago, but it does appear some of those passengers are being treated forehead wounds and broken bones. let me show you video from a local tv station. metro tv shows the plane wreckage. the plane is in half. investigators say the plane overshot the runway and crashed into the indian ocean from an altitude of around 160 feet. now, the airline spokesperson confirms one person was injured. 18 others are being checked over at hospitals. that's fewer than initially reported. those numbers keep fluctuating. passengers on the plane say there was screaming and painic when the plane struck the ocean. some feared they would drown. one passenger said he managed to get out of an emergency door and swam to safety before rescue crews arrived. the plane carried 101 passengers and seven crewmembers and all those people have been accounted for.

the plane is a boeing 737 spz 800. the airline says it's been in use since last month and the pilot was good to fly. investigators are still working to determine where the plane went down. live in the newsroom, ktvu channel 2news. there are new developments in a high profile sexual assault case in the south bay. prosecutors say 15-year-old audrey pot had been drinking and was unconscious when she was attacked and sexually assaulted by three 16-year-old boys at a house party in saratoga last september. police say after the attack, the boys e-mailed and texted photos of the assault to kids at their high school. pot's family says she was distraught and committed suicide eight days later. the teens were cited in september, then released on misdemeanor charges. >> in the case of audrey, she was terrorized. here's a 15-year-old dealing with being sexually assaulted by many boys, who were her friends. >> attorneys for the accused boys released this statement. it reads in part, much of what has been reported over the last

several days is inaccurate. most disturbing is the attempt to link audrey's suicide to the specific actions of these three boys. now, the teens will make their first court appearance on tuesday morning. the pots family want the teens tried as adults. they released a statement saying we suspect the boys that we believe are responsible for audrey's death took deliberate steps to destroy evidence and interfere with the police investigation. the pots family also plans to hold a news conference on monday. two of the boys accused were arrested at saratoga high. a third teen us a was arrested on thursday during pe. close friends are coming to his defense. >> i spoke to his dad and he said he's not guilty of what he's accused of. i think it's weird. >> the principal at christopher high declined to talk to us on camera, but in a statement called the 16-year-old a good

kid and good student and said they were happy to have him. developing news now out of the east bay, pg&e has fully restored power to more than a thousand customers after a car crashed right into a power pole in hayward. it happened just before 6:00 this morning on industrial boulevard east of h isp arian. a car hit a fire hydrant and a metal pole. the people in the car ran away. police say the vehicle was stolen. at one point, more than a thousand customers had lost power. pg&e crews still have to replace the pole, which could take all day long. in overnight news, a man is in jail in connection to a fatal shooting in san francisco. it happened just before 2:30 this morning in the area of pacific and taylor street. officers received a report of a body inside an apartment complex. they arrived on scene to find a man in his early twenties dead from gunshot wounds. investigators say they believe the shooting stemmed from a heated argument. police say the suspect is a 55- year-old man.

the doors are now open at a huge gun show at the cow palace. alex savidge is live there now to tell us what's drawing such a large crowd. alex? >> reporter: well, the owner of the cross roads of the west gun show tells me this morning he believes two factors are leading to the large crowds. first of all, it's calls for stricter gun laws and second, a recent run on ammunition. that's what has a lot of people coming down to the cow palace and showing up this morning. they have just opened the doors and you can see the scene here outside the cow palace right now. hundreds of people are lined up in the parking lot and now making their way inside. this is the second of five gun shows being held here this  year. according to the organizer, the big draw in particular this weekend is the ammo. lot of people want to stock up on it, which the ammo has been in short supply. ammunition in general, i should say, has been in short supply at many retail outlets. that's the reason people come to shows like this one. the organizers tell me they will have plenty of ammunition for sale here because they get

it direct from the manufacturers. >> of course that's not going to happen because of their bias against lawful gun ownership, and so it will effectively close the cow palace show if it's passed. of course that's his intent. >> reporter: that's the owner of the cross roads of the west gun show, bob templeton, talking about legislation proposed by state senator mark leno that would require officials to approve these gun shows. he believes it would ultimately lead to these gun shows being barred from the cow palace. meantime, not far away from here, there is a gun buyback taking place. in smait, officials began a gun buyback event, offering up money, cash, $100 for handguns, $200 for assault weapons, so that's happening just up the road from here. that just got under way at 9:00 and continues through noon. and the organizers here of this gun show at the cow palace are

missile down if its trajectory suggest it is could threaten the u.s. or pacific rim allies. the latest strain of the bird flu virus has hit beijing, china. a 7-year-old contracted the strain. her parents work in live poultry business. she was admitted to the hospital on thursday with symptoms, including a fever, sore throat and a headache. this new strain has so far killed 11 people and sickened 32 others in eastern china. health officials in southern california are warning gay men to look out for symptoms of bacterial meningitis. it comes after a 33-year-old man was sickened by the illness. he was diagnosed three days ago and is now in a coma. over the easter weekend, the man attended the annual white party in palm springs, an event which draws thousands of gay men across the country. well, tests are being done to see if this strain is similar to a meningitis that is circulating around gay men in new york city. that outbreak infected 22 people and killed seven since 2010. symptoms of the illness can

initially resemble the flu. two cruise ships made unexpected stops off the florida keys to rescue migrant rafters from cuba. yesterday, a carnival conquest ship rescued 13 cuban nationals on a raft 40 miles from key west. in a separate incident, a disney wonder ship picked up eight people in the same area. none of the rafters were hurt and the cruise ship gave them food and water. the coastguard says it is likely they will be returned to their home countries. facebook's new home app is raising privacy concerns. the service launched for android on google play yesterday works by turning your phone into a facebook news feed. even if you're not signed in to facebook, photos and updates from your news feed automatically pop up onto your phone. some people are worried the app could make it easier for facebook to track and collect information from users. the deadline to file your income taxes is just two days away. federal and state income taxes must be filed by april 15th, this coming monday. according to the irs, 50 million americans waited until april to start their tax filing

any arrests. stockton police are trying to identify this man caught peeking into the bedroom of a young girl's home. the video was captured by the family's home surveillance system. they say they do not recognize the man. police say one of the neighbors heard a noise outside of her home and spotted that gentleman as he took off on a mountain bike. they say they are pursuing several leads. there's a new development in the case of a former high school football player wrongly imprisoned for rape. brick bank spent more than five years behind bars. a 15-year-old girl at the time accused him of raping her at their school. the school district is now suing the girl and her family to recover legal fees and the $750,000 the district paid to them to settle the lawsuit. the district says it wants the money back due to fraud. tiger woods was almost disqualified from the masters early this morning. officials took issue with his drop shot on the 15th yesterday. the drop came after this shot, which hit the pin, then rolled back into the water. woods chose to play his next shot from the same area.
