b.a.r.t. construckd project -- construction project. gunfire in the south bay. ktvu news was first on the scene of this suspected gang- related attack. overnight rain. that's gone. here comes the colder air and the wind picking up again. it's time for "mornings on 2." good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm pam cook. tori campbell is off. it's monday. april 15th. a man is undergoing a medical evaluation after responding to a berkeley call. we're live on dwight way with alex savidge. >> reporter: police are still trying to sort through why this took place. this was an emergency medical

call that for whatever reason turned violent. one berkeley firefighter grazed by a bullet when a man who lives in this house across the street started firing shots at firefighters. this is on the 1200 block of dwight way near san pablo. that firefighter was on the scene and didn't have to go to the hospital. police tell us the shooter is an 88-year-old man. this is video as he was taken away by paramedics for a mental evaluation. there were as many as five berkeley firefighters around 1:45 responding to that medical call when police say the man inside pulled out a gun and started firing shots. one of the firefighters was hit by a bullet but only suffered a glancing wound. the firefighters ran out of the house and police moved in to surround the place. there was a brief standoff between police and this armed man inside. but eventually the accused shooter gave himself up and was taken into custody. police are trying to figure out why he opened fire. >> it is gonna be part of the course of the investigation if

he was specifically trying to injure the firefighters or if he may have been confused. we're just not sure at this point. the concern is were they called here intentionally to be injured for there was truly a medical issue. >> reporter: berkeley police are doing a full investigation, interviewing all of the firefighters trying to decide what, if any, charges this elderly homeowner will be facing. the wounded firefighter treated at the scene. didn't have to go to the hospital. i have put in a request to speak with that injured firefighter. we hope to hear his stroir at some point -- story at some point this morning. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. in a few hours, commuters on a major road in san jose can expect to their commute to get longer because of construction on the b.a.r.t. to san jose extension project.

brian flores is live from hosssettler boulevard where crews will begin to dig. >> reporter: hi, pam. crews have just begun moving in here. so far traffic, pretty much moving nicely here. but that could change in the next few hours on hosssettler where lanes are we duesed. the steel -- reduced. the steel is in place. for the next few months this could become a commuter headache for those who use this road. they are digging the trench for the b.a.r.t. to cross the road. until then, the area is affected on lynndie. vta says the lane configuration will be different and reduced from three lanes to two. they will build a dedicated bike lane and pabdle pedestrian

traffic. if you use this area frequently, construction is expected to last seven to nine months. they will begin a second phase and construction crews will be out here every morning from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. six days a week. official says the work condone on sundays as needed. this is all part of the 16-mile extension of the existing b.a.r.t. system to san jose, milpitas and santa clara. project officials say overall, the project is scheduled to be completed in 2018. as we take you back out here live. but they are hoping to get it done earlier. coming up, a vta spokesperson is expected to be here around 7:45. when we come back, we'll get an update on traffic and how this traffic is doing. we're live in san jose, i'm brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. sheriff's deputies in the south bay say an early-morning shooting may be tied to san jose's violent street gangs.

ktvu's janine de la vega was first on the scene near story road. investigators say a young man was shot in the head. he's expected to survive. the search for suspects continues. >> well, it looks like there was an altercation, during the ail terlcation, there was some -- altercation, there were some shots fired. we don't know where the shooters are. >> reporter: neighbors are fed up with the growing gang violence in the san jose area. the parents of a saratoga high school student who took her own life after being sexually assaulted will speak out today. audrie pott's parents are scheduled to appear at a news conference. they say their daughter was assaulted by three teenagers while she was drunk and unconscious at a party. she reportedly took her own life after a photograph of this appeared on line. we'll have more on this about

of efforts to have the suspects tried as adults. investigators are searching for the cause of an early- morning fire. it happened at an empty house on 37th street in oakland. here it is. started about 1:30 this morning. still not clear how the fire started but investigators say squatters have been known to sleep inside that house. it's quite possible -- the investigator is investigating at this time. >> the flames caused a lot of damage but there's no word of injuries so far. happening right now, a high wind advisory is in effect for most bay area bridges as we look outside right now -- look at that flag. just blowing. the wind advisories cover the bay bridge, san mateo bridge as well as the benicia, carquinez and dahm barren to bridge. a small craft advisory has been issued between puerta and

pigeon point. tara moriarty has been out there all morning and will join us live at 7:30 to tell us how this is affecting the great highway. sal is keeping an eye on the winds. he's also looking at walnut creek. it's kind of slow. southbound 680 and walnut creek. we had an earlier crash in san ma san ramon -- in san ramon. it's a mess from walnut creek to danville. this traffic is beginning to back up into pleasant hill. if you are a walnut creek driver or a concord driver, one tweeter will be outraged when she sees this backup. give yourself extra time. we're not starting off well here in the diablo valley. this is a look at the westbound bay bridge. that's backed up for a 25 to 30- minute delay. no major problems on the bridge. it's windy as tara has been mentioning. all of us have been on wind

so far, north korea is turning down peace talks. kyla? >> reporter: north korea refused to take up south korea on its offer over the weekend to start negotiations. north koreans are focused on a three-day celebration marking the birth of their first leader. he's the grandfather of kim jung un . in south korea, people are demonstrating against the north, calling for other countries to support the united states' effort to bring peace to the region. john kerry is counting on north korea's allies in china to move the peace process along. kerry met with officials over the weekend. he says they are very concerned about the instability. >> we are going to work because we've agreed to very closely with china to try to change this dynamic from the past and not simply keep repeating this year to year. >> reporter: secretary kerry says the u.s. has made very clear to north korea the

and took his own life. the suicide happened, doesn't appear it was any kind of a gun protest. visitors to the national 9/11 museum, they are being charged a $2 fee. this took effect for those reserving passes online or over the phone. family members of some of the 9/11 victims say that fee violates the mission of the memorial. >> i think it's ridiculous for somebody to do -- it's like a cemetery down there to pay your respects. you shouldn't be charged. we told there wouldn't be a fee and now there is. >> officials say the fee supports the operations of the memorial. the faa is ordering inspections for 747s because of a tail part. all of the affected jets must have the part in the tail

a spring snowstorm in minnesota, causing problems for drivers. yesterday, three semitrucks carrying pigs and cattle crashed temporarily shutting down part of the highway. luckily nobody was hurt. but it did take several hours to get the animals off -- off the road. snow and ice caused several other cars to lose control on the highway. back here at home, amtrak says a derailment in fremont on saturday night will not affect your commute. it happened saturday night heading to los angeles. no one was hurt. the capital corridor trains are running this morning. still no word on what caused the derailment. the chp will be investigating the tour bus

involved in a crash that injured 16 people. the accident happened on the highway 41 near yosemite just after 6:00 on saturday night. authorities say the driver was going too fast, lost control and smashed into a tree. 15 passengers and the tour guide were injured. the driver was not hurt. the highway patrol will be looking at the bus to try to determine if maybe mechanics were part of the problem. well, part of joshua tree national park in the san bernardino county is closed to all visitors. that's after graffiti like that was scrawled on giant bolders where indians may have etched things more than a thousand years ago. the national park service says vandals bragged about what they had done on facebook and that encouraged other people to do the same thing and mark that same area. the vandals who are captured are gonna face a $5,000 fine and possibly six months in

jail. 7:24. let's check back with sal. you are keeping an eye on walnut creek still. >> that's right. we had an earlier problem in san ramon. traffic on 680 in san ramon and danville has been very slow. it backed up into walnut creek and -- it started with an early- morning crash in san ramon that was finally cleared from the lanes. but it has been very slow. it's still beginning to -- starting to unwind. but it's still very slow. let's move along and take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. that's about a 15, 20-minute delay. not especially bad. once you get on the bridge you will find it's pretty windy. 101, 280, not filled in. 101 looks good with slowing near the 880 and near 237 heading north. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. a little bit of rain fell overnight. not a lot. a little bit.

the family of a saratoga high school student who took her life following a reported sexual assault will be speaking out this morning. ktvu's janine de la vega joining us live with more on the news conference with a tragic case that's getting national attention. janine? >> reporter: that's right. it sparked outrage. this news conference is gonna take place at the radisson hotel that you see behind me.

the parents of audrie pott have never spoken out to the media but they want to do so and talk about this sexual assault that allegedly happened to their daughter. prosecutors say audrey had been drinking and was unconscious when she was sexually assaulted last fall. after the attack, the boys e- mailed and eight days later, audrie pott killed herself. the three boys have been arrested. the lawyers for the boys say though are concerned -- they are concerned about the statements made in this case. a news conference will be taking place at 11:00 a.m. i'm joined by ed vazquez. you are the spokesperson for the pott family. what do the parents want to say? >> well, they would like to encourage other parents to talk to their kids, have an honest

discussion about what took place. we know there are rumors that have been circulating around the campus for more than seven months now, including what happened. have an honest discussion with the kids, find out what happened and come forward and help us put together the answers to the questions that the parents, you know, deserve to have answers for. >> reporter: besides that, they are interested in legislation, correct? >> there is. when you have a sexual assault that takes place, there's two levels of -- of damages that occur here. one is whether you are conscious sand the other is whether you are unconscious and in audrie's case, she was unconscious. so the prosecutors have to prove that these kids should be tried as adults because audri. he was unconscious. >> reporter: thank you, ed vazques. audrey's parents are very ada mant these three teenagers be

tried as adults. the defense attorneys are saying please keep in mind these boys are innocent until proven guilty. we'll continue to follow the story and bring you that news conference. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. san jose police are searching for a burglary suspect who hit an officer with his car. it happened last night outside a concert at hp pavilion. while the police officer was doing traffic control. police say the suspect had just broken into a car and was trying to get away after the owner of the car confronted him. the police officer has a fractured leg. police say the suspect may be driving a 2008 black four-door acura tl. if you have any information, please call san jose police. 7:33. accused serial killer joseph naso is due back in a marin county courtroom this morning. the 78-year-old defendant is acting as his own lawyer as he gets ready for his trial. he's accused of killing four northern california women in

crimes that date back to the 1970s. his trial is due to begin in november. an 8-year-old boy in rohnert park is recovering this morning after suffering a heart attack after suffering a little league baseball game over the weekend. it happened at vista park saturday afternoon. he was hit in the chest with a baseball while batting. after trying to run the first base he collapsed. luckily, two off-duty paramedics were in the stands and performed chp before an ambulance arrived. it's windy out there. it's supposed to get worse. right now, most bay bridge bridges are under wind advisories. tara moriarty is in san francisco checking in on the wind conditions firsthand. tara? >> reporter: it's definitely windy. hold onto your heights. think about taking the kite out. you will get some use out of it. the surf is rolling in. it doesn't look that bad but up

near pigeon point and point arena there's a small craft advisory in effect until 9:00. in three hours, the winds really kick in. the great highway is shut down between skyline and lincoln. we are expecting up to 45-mile- an-hour wind gusts in areas, that lasting through 9:00 tonight. yesterday afternoon, beachgoers fought off pelting sand with blankets and sands. kite surfers didn't really last long on the water. residents in the sunset district said the howling wind kept them awake last night. >> it was blowing in your face. it was 75-mile-an-hour gusts last night. that was a little irritating. other than that, it doesn't bother me. >> 45 miles an hour, nothing. >> piece of cake. >> reporter: in burlingame, a large tree came down on california drive. nobody was hurt.

but the toppled tree did damage a parked car. in san francisco, damage still evidence on 28th where trees came crashing down on a baseball diamond and debris littered the park. there is a high wind advisory for most of your bridges. for more than that, we'll check in with sal castanedo. how is it going? >> it's busy, as you mentioned, the bridges will be tough driving. all of the bridges, too. bum barren to and bay bridge -- bum barren to and -- dumbarton and bay bridge. northbound 101, that looks okay approaching the 80 split. southbound 101 looking okay down to the airport and the peninsula. the bay bridge is about a typical delay of 25 to 30 minutes at the toll plaza. no problems on the bridge itself getting into the city. we mentioned the san mateo and dumbarton bridge we haven't had any traffic problems. some slowing on 880 southbound from about 238 as you drive

disconnecting from electronics as they drive. two rides at disneyland and california adventure remain closed because of safety concerns. disney is reviewing safety procedures for the space mountain and soaring over california rides. they were shut down on saturday. both rides will remain closed until the review is finished. no word yet when the rides will open. the matterhorn and bobsled closed on saturday but reopened yesterday. 7:47. a congressional investigation says specialty pharmacies have very little state oversight. the investigation found most states don't inspect compounding pharmacies and those pharmacies are not required to amount of drugs. compounding pharmacies make specialized drugs for patients with particular needs. a hearing about this issue will be held tomorrow morning. the a.i.d.s. healthcare foundation is offering free meningitis

vaccines in the wake of a meningitis death. a 33-year-old man died on friday from the disease. the victim had recently gone to a nationally-attended lgbt party in palm springs. it's possible the disease could be spreading. one san francisco man won't take any chances before visiting his brother in new york. >> he was like, hey, please get vaccinated before you come out here. i know you have a boyfriend. it's spreading fast. there was a case out in palm springs. it's huge right now. >> the san francisco health department is urging gay men to get vaccinated if they plan to travel back east. state health officials will continue to investigate the death on friday to identify where that victim may have been infected. today the u.s. supreme court takes up the issue whether human genes can be patented.

hotsetter boulevard. i know you spoke to a spokes spokesperson -- to a spokesperson. what are they saying? >> reporter: what a difference an hour makes. just about an hour ago, it was pretty quiet. as soon as construction crews arrived at 7:00 and more traffic -- and more workers arrived, traffic started. they will be beginning shifting the lanes from the north side to the south side on hostsetter. this is exciting news for those looking forward to the b.a.r.t. extense project. but this could become a commuter headache for those who use hotsetter. crew also begin a trench for the train to pass. until then, commuters need to know that car traffic will be affected between lundy avenue and flickenjer avenue.

the lane configuration will be reduced from one to two lanes. if you use this area frequently, construction on this portion is expected to last seven to nine months as well. then they will begin a second phase which is not expected to start for months. but for now, commuters need to be prepared to leave early. >> i would allow an extra five minutes just to carefully go through the intersection. it won't be -- it won't shut down traffic. it's two-thirds of the capacity. just to be safe and make sure you are not rushing, allow at least five minutes extra time. >> reporter: construction crews will be out here every morning from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. six days a week. officials say the work could be done on sundays as well. this is part of the extension of the b.a.r.t. system from san jose, him pea tis -- milpitas and santa clara. they say they are scheduled for

this to be completed by 2017. traffic starting to pick u if you are heading out -- pick up a little bit. if you are heading out the door, the traffic could be busy as you head out and probably when you come back home. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. also new this morning, a man has been taken into custody after shooting at a berkeley firefighter. ktvu channel 2 reporters alex savidge joins us now with what the fire department just said about the unusual medical call where a shot was fired. alex? >> reporter: i can tell you, we just heard from berkeley firefighters here at station one, the folks responded to that early-morning medical alert call. the firefighters involved in the shooting, very shaken up. we just got an update from the acting deputy chief. what we learned here is that the firefighter shot at. it was a very close call for him. the bullet fired actually struck this pager-like device that he was wearing on his

belt. the device just exploded. it burst into pieces. that may have kept the firefighter from being more seriously hurt. >> the job that we have is dangerous. oftentimes people are associated with burning buildings. but the majority of the calls that we go on are medical calls and oftentimes when you are going to someone's home, you know, you don't really know what you will be facing. >> reporter: this all happened at a house on the 1200 block of dwight way near san pablo about 1:a this -- 1:45 this morning. the shooter in this case, 88- year-old man and he was taken away by pair med foiks ar-- by paramedics for mental evaluation. the firefighter was treated on scene. didn't have to go to the hospital. the man just pulled out a gun and started firing shots. a short time ago, i did talk with one neighbor who lives a couple of doors down. he said the men involved in the shooting was always pretty friendly.

>> we just would see him. he would go by and sometimes i would say hello but that's -- you -- he would just kind of walk -- you know, he's quite old. >> are you surprised to hear what happened? >> yeah, sure. >> reporter: now, after those firefighters ran out of the house as shots were being fired, police moved in and there was a short standoff but eventually the elderly homeowner was taken into custody without incident. he's undergoing a mental evaluation. and berkeley police will do a full evaluation and let us know what charges will be filed. but again, a berkeley firefighter shot at. he was struck on his belt. but it sounds as though a device he was carrying on his belt, a pager-like device may have kept him from being more seriously injured. live in berkeley, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. sheriff's deputies in the south bay say an early-morning shooting may be tied to san jose's violent street gangs. janine de la vega was first on

the scene at 4:30 this morning. this is right near story road. investigators say a young man was shot in the head but he is expected to survive. in the meantime, the search goes on for suspects. >> it looks like there was anally tercation. during the -- an altercation. during the altercation there were shots fired. we don't have a gun. don't know who the shooters are. >> the neighbors say they are fed up with the growing gang violence. >> the parents of a saratoga high school student who took her life after being sexually assaulted will be speaking out today. audrie pott's parents are scheduled to hold a news conference at 11:a.m. along with private investigators. they say their daughter was sexually assaulted by three teenagers at a party while drunk and unconscious. pott reportedly took her life after a photo of the sexual assault was circslated online -- circulated online. janine de la vega will be live at 8:30 with more information on the action pott's parents

want lawmakers to take and also the efforts to have the suspects tried as adults. we're also following overnight news from the east bay. investigators are searching for the cause of an early-morning fire at an empty home on 37th street in oakland. that started at about 1:30 this morning. it's still not clear how the fire started but investigators say squatters have been known to sleep inside that home. >> it's quite possible -- the opd has received several calls on this. they are investigating at this time. >> no reports of injuries. a high wind advisory is in effect for most bay area bridges. it does include the bay bridge, san mateo bridge, benicia, carquinez, dumbarton. you can see the flags are blowing, a small aircraft advisory also been issued between point arena and pigeon point. that means conditions are

hazardous for small boats. ktvu's tara moriarty will have a live report coming up at 8:30 tell us how the winds are affecting the great highway. 8:06. b.a.r.t. is changing the meeting time for some of its board meetings so more people can attend. the meetings usually start at 9:00 nt morning but some -- 9:00 this morning but some complained it is not convenient. they will start to hold evening meetings and if more people show up to those meetings they will decide if they will hold them more often. westbound 880 on hercules, near the willow onramp. there's a crash there. one person reported with a broken arm after the crash. most of the slow traffic is after that. as you can see, it's very slow driving from pinole to richmond down to berkeley where it eases up. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, it is backed up for a 15 to 20--- 15 to 20-minute

welcome back. 8:23. the chilling words of a notorious child killer now has federal agents looking for several more victims several years after his death in prison. this is the story you will see only on 2. curtis dean anderson confessed to the 199 murder of 7-year-old ziana fairchild of vallejo. anderson also admitted killing 7-year-old amber schwartz of pinole more than ten years earlier. the fbi says anderson made

another admission while behind bars in 2007. anderson said he killed six other people, no one ever heard about. >> he told me that the first time he killed somebody was in -- probably early '84. these were what he called disposable victim. >> anderson says the other six victims were young women. he died a month after making these claims. federal agents say they don't know if he was telling the truth. the fbi has set up a hot line for anyone with information about any of these cases, that number on the screen is 1-800- call-fbi. 8:24. let's check traffic now. sal is here with the i have latest on how we're do -- with the latest on how we're doing. >> right now traffic is moving along okay. the wind is gonna be the big story. we'll look at the san mateo bridge. the traffic looks good. but it's going to get even windier according to one of my

the family of a saratoga high school student who took her life following a reported sexual assault will be speaking out this morning. ktvu's janine de la vega joining us live now to tell us more about today's news conference. it's a case that's getting national attention. janine? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. the news conference will be taking place here in this ballroom at the radisson hotel at 11:00 a.m. a spokesperson for audrie pott's family confirmed they will be announcing, they will be filing a civil lawsuit against several people. the teen's parents are completely devastated. they want to hold a conference because they are searching for answers. prosecutors say audrie had been drinking and was unconscious when she was sexually assaulted

by three 16-year-old boys at a house party in saratoga last fall. investigators say after the attack, the boys e-mailed and texted the assault to the kids at the high school. audrie killed herself eight days later. the teens were arrested on felony charges including sexual battery. >> we don't have all of the answers. so we're hoping that by today parents will have an honest discussion with their children. we know that many of the kids at saratoga high school have heard rumors. they saw the photo itself. we would like them to come forward and, you know, talk to us about what happened, what they've heard. audrie's parents plan on telling the media how they learned about the sexual assault, the kids involved and their reaction. they want to raise awareness about teenaged bully and social

media to humiliate others. the parents are adamant they want these boys tried as adults. we'll bring you that news conference and tell you what happened coming up on the noon newscast. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. san jose police are searching for a burglary suspect who hit a police officer with his car. it happened last night outside a condition cert at the hp -- concert at -- outside a concert at the hp pavilion while police were doing traffic control. the suspect drove off in a car after being confronted. the suspect may be driving a 2008 black four-door acura. if you have information, call san jose police. joseph naso is due back in a marin county courtroom this morning for a pretrial hearing. the 78-year-old defendant is acting as his own attorney as he prepares for his trial.

he's accused of killing four northern california women in crimes dating back to the 1970s. his crime to scheduled to begin in november. an 8-year-old boy is recovering this morning after suffering a heart attack during his little league baseball game over the weekend. that happened at vista park saturday afternoon in rohnert park. the boy was hit in the chest with a baseball while he was batting after trying to run to 1st base. he collapsed. two off-duty paramedics happened to be there in the stands. they administered cpr before an ambulance arrived. if you have not been outside yet, you may want to grab a jacket. it's pretty windy and it will probably be even worse. tara moriarty's is in san francisco to tell us about when the winds are really expected to kick in. tara? >> reporter: that's right. a little bit later this morning. we have the wind-swept look going. it's very chilly out there. definitely grab a jacket. not as bad as last week's mini

wind storm pushing through the area. but still blowing. you can see the waves are rolling in off koetion beach. we've seen a lot more white caps. the wind is supposed to get really churning in about two and a half hours at 11:00, we'll stea wind at 20, 30 miles an hour with gusts up to 45 miles an hour. the great highway is also shut down between sky rhine and lincoln -- skyline and lincoln. these windy conditions are expected to last until 9:00 tonight. now, yesterday afternoon, beachgoers protected themselves from the stinging stand with blankets and towels. kite surfers said the conditions were rough. neighbors say the howling wind kept them awake last night. >> pretty windy. my trash was a little torn up unfortunately. maybe extra gel. >> reporter: extra hair gel. >> i love it. i don't mind it. it feels good. it's refreshing. >> reporter: you are getting a

hot beverage today. >> oh, yeah, definitely getting the coffee. >> reporter: in burlingame, a large eucalyptus three came crashing down on california drive. no one was hurt. but the tree did damage a parked car. in san francisco, damage still evident from last week's gust where fallen trees wreaked havoc on a baseball diamond and debris littered a park in the sunset district. we have this high wind advisory in effect right now. all of them affected by that to make sure you have a firm trip on the -- grip on the steering wheel. as you can see, we have the road closed here along the great highway and this runs all the way to lake merced. you will have to figure out a different route this morning. right now, we are gonna check in with sal castanedo and take a look at some of your other roadways. hey, sal. >> your hair doesn't look bad.

closed today because of safety concerns. disney is reviewing safety procedures for its workers on the space mountain and soaring over california rides. they were shut down on saturday. both rides will remain closed until the review is finished. no word yet when the rides will open again. the matterhorn was closed on saturday. but it reopened yesterday. the search has ended for a hiker who was swept away by an avalanche in washington state. rescuers say the weather is too bad to keep searching for the 60-year-old man. he was buried under the snow with two other hikers. the other men were rescued and are expected to survive. >> according to one of the climbers, i mean, it came on him with no warning whatsoever. he was carried about a thousand feet. >> on saturday, a different avalanche killed a woman hiking with her dog near snoqualmie pass. a group of people were able to dig her out of the snow but she

still died a short time later. an italian court is deciding whether to indict the captain and some crew members of the costa concordia. that's the cruise ship that ran aground off tuscany last year killing 32 people. prosecutors want the captain to stand trial for manslaughter. in iraq, 36 people are dead, more than 200 injured after a series of car bombs. the wave of attacks comes days before iraqis vote in the first election since the 2011 troop withdrawal. saturday will be a key test of keeping voters test. no one has claimed responsibility for the bombings but al qaeda is suspected. this morning in venezuela the successor to hugo chavez has been declared the winner. but his opponent is demanding a recount. nicholas maduro supporters

in terms of traffic take a look. i mean, traffic right now at this very hour is moving very nicely. that's not to say it won't be like that as the morning continues onto the afternoon and this weekend and then coming months. you can see the crews are meeting right now. what they are gonna be doing is removes the median for the most part of the day and then they will end up removing -- reconfiguring the lanes on hostsetter, reducing them from three lanes in each direction to two lanes. possibly, if you do take this road, you may be seeing some major traffic delays when you come back here from work, back home. but construction crews got here at 7:00 this morning. they are ready to begin the project on the most expensive project ever in silicon valley. that's definitely exciting news for those looking forward to the b.a.r.t. extension project. but until then, this could become a headache for those who use hostsetter. crews will dig a trench that

will go under hostsetter. but until then, car traffic will be affected on hostsetter road. vta says the lane configuration will be reduced from three lanes to two. that's expected to begin around 9:00 a.m. if you use this area frequently, construction on this portion is expected to last seven to nine months as well. they will begin a second phase expected to start after that. commuters need to be prepared and leave a little bit early if you take host setter. this is a significant east/west thoroughfare. we will maintain two-thirds of the capacity. commuters, individuals going to work or school, i would allow a little bit of extra travel time and be cautious going through the area. it's an active construction site. they also say give yourself probably about five, ten minutes when you leave for work in the mornings. crews will be out here every morning in fact from 7:00 to

7:00 p.m. seven days a week. official says the work condone on sundays as needed as well. this is all part of the 16-mile extense to san jose milpitas and santa clara. the project officials as we take it back out here live say the extension project is scheduled to be completed in 2018. but they say they are on track to have it completed by 2017. we'll stay on top of this. we're live in san jose. i'm brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. amtrak says the weekend train derailment is not affecting commuters this morning. it happened saturday night on a train that was heading from los angeles to seattle. now, the front two wheels on the lead locomotive came off the tracks but fortunately nobody was hurt. repair crews were able to finish the work late yesterday morning and capital corridor trains, we understand they are running as scheduled this morning. still no word on what caused the derailment, though. the highway patrol will be investigating the tour bus involved in a crash that injured 16 people. the accident happened on

highway 41 near yosemite. the driver was going too fast, lost control and crashed into a tree. the driver was not hurt. 16 people suffered injuries. the highway patrol will look at the bus to see if mechanics were a contributing factor. part of joshua tree national park is closed to all visitors. that's after graffiti was scrawled on giant boulders where indians may have etched drawing the more than a thousand years ago. the national park service says vandals bragged about what they had done on facebook and that encouraged others to mark the same area. vandals caught face a $5,000 fine and six months in jail into a congressional investigation says specialty pharmacies are not being monitored closely by state officials. the investigation found most
