law enforcement officers target members of a notorious east bay gang. what we've learned about the number of arrests and what else was seized during this overnight raid. good afternoon, i'm tori campbell. oakland police announced today that its officers along with the fbi served more than a dozen search warrants in a massive east bay gang sweep. ktvu's tara moreiarty has more and a story we've been

following since 10:00 last night. >>reporter: bay area and oakland police officers geared up around 5:00 last night. they served 16 high-risk warrants at homes stretching from antioch to hayward. >> five people were arrested, including one juvenile. we recovered four weapons and several quantities of narcotics, including marijuana, cocaine and others. >>reporter: most of the raids were in oakland, targeting the notorious acorn gang near 8th and adline street. >> it makes you feel a lot safer. you feel like you can walk the streets now without being harassed. and, you know, it's really a blessing. >>reporter: one resident who recently lost her 18-year-old cousin says it's heartbreaking to attend so many funerals. >> and people are sad because it's going to make me start crying, just the fact that -- >>reporter: that you've buried some loved ones? >> killed my cousin, they killed my little cousin down here. >>reporter: law enforcement says crime involving the acorn gang can be traced back

decades. three reputed gang members just last year were charged with the murder of a 2-year-old boy as he was being held in his father's arms. it's a killing that haunts police, but chief jordan says these latest raids prove''s fulfilling his -- prove he's fulfilling his promises and neighbors last night were cheering on law enforcement. >> we don't get cheers after serving warrants too often, but i think they've been under siege for such a long time, it was good to see the support. >>reporter: san leandro police also took part in the sweep. the operation ended at 1:00 this morning. no one was injured and police say they did not have to use excessive force. in oakland, taramoriarty, ktvu news. continuing coverage of the boston bombings. officials now say the accused bombers planned to carry out more attacks in new york city. new york city's police commissioner ray kelly says dzhokhar and tamerlan tsarnaev

had pressure bombs to use in times square. >> he told the fbi apparently that he and his brother had intended to drive to new york and designate additional explosives in times square. they had built these additional explosives, and we know they have the capacity to carry out the attacks. >> investigators say that information did not initially come from the surviving suspect, but the victim of the carjacking who overheard the pair talking about heading to new york. also today we learned from law enforcement officials that dzhokhar tsarnaev immediately stopped talking to investigators after a judge and a representative from the u.s. attorney's office gave him his miranda rights in his hotel room. tsarnaev had been questioned for 16 hours before receiving the miranda warning that includes the right to remain silent. the streets near boston marathon bombings, meanwhile, have reopened, but many businesses in the area might never recoupe the losses they

suffered after the attack. the boston globe reports many commercial insurance policies have exclusions built in for terrorist attacks. that means many of the 400 businesses shut down by the attacks may have their claims for lost sales rejected. one city official said large office buildings are covered by terrorism insurance, but that many mom and pop stores will suffer losses. the father of the two boston bombing suspects says he is leaving russia for the united states this week and hopes to visit his son. the suspect's parents held a press conference today in it russia. their mother says she is certain that her sons were not involved with the bombings and she says she regrets moving her family to the united states. >> you take my kids away from me, only in america. [ indiscernable ] why?

i don't know who did this. i am sure my kids were not involved in this. >> investigators have been trying to determine whether the older son was radicalized last year during a six-month stay in russia. bart police and other officials of the transit system today announced new safety intishives to protect passengers and employees against crime. ktvu sal castenaddas is live with what the bart police are hoping for. >>reporter: as we were standing here, we saw bart police officers running down the street and they have just tackled someone at the end there. you can see one car is actually slowing down to take a look. there's someone they have in handcuffs there. they came running out of the bart station and they tackled that man. and after the boston marathon bombings and all that has happened this week, bart officials say it's even more important to get safe for

passengers and employees. today bart police chief kenton rainy presented more than a dozen safety improvement proposals, including a a signing more -- assigning more officers to problem stations, getting restraining orders for those who repeatedly commit crime on bart and to deal with the mentally ill. >> let's face it, anything going on in the community is going to come into bart as well. we're not immune to mentally- ill people, violent criminals, that sort of thing. so we are looking at and have been looking at different ways to protect station agents, front line employees as well as our customers. >>reporter: the bart director says safety has long been a concern and it's even more so following the boston marathon bombings. union president antoinette bryan says it's time for bart to stop talking and start doing. >> we're just wondering what took them so long to figure that out. our members have been coming to the board meetings for probably the last four to state incidents that have happened to them specifically and in

general. i've been an agent for 22 years. i've been assaulted verbally, physically. >>reporter: now, one of the things that bart officials have said is also to physicallyfortify the booths that station agents stand in to give them doors to keep unruly passengers out and station agents inside safe. live in oakland, sal castenaddas, ktvu news. >> thank you very much, sal. rmts part of san francisco's central subway project arrived at the cruz site early this morning. it's a giant tunnel-boring machine that will dig its way to chinatown. claudia wong tells us why this equipment will not be put to work right away. good afternoon, claudine. >>reporter: good afternoon, tori. yes, there are two drills that will make this central subway in san francisco a reality. behind me you are looking at just part of one of them. they've working on that for the last little bit here, getting it prepped and ready. that piece you're looking at by

itself weighs 120 tons and it's one part of about 20 different parts that will make up this drill that will be over 300 feet long when it's completed. however, assembly takes a while. it's going to take weeks to put it together. >>reporter: before the drilling comes the prep work and the assembly of the drills that will create the tunnels of san francisco's central subway. >> prepping at first, definitely. there are a lot of machine surfaces that have a corrosion inhibitor and it has to be removed before they can get it assembled. they're getting it all cleaned up. >>reporter: there are two drills. they were built in china by a company based in ohio. their job, dig twin tunnels that are 1.7 miles long, tunnels that will eventually transport people back and forth from the bay view to the chinatown. >> we anticipate we'll be able to excavate 50 to 60 feet per day on average. >>reporter: it will take weeks to get the drill ready. this morning the first parts arrived, impressive from the outside, but take a look inside because that's where some of the tricky work will be.

>> the body of the machine doesn't take that long. we can get the body of the machine together in a couple of weeks. but there is a tremendous amount of electrical, computer and hydraulic systems that need to be installed. once they're installed, they all have to be tested. this machine was tested in our factory, but once it's all taken apart, we have to test it again to make sure it was put back together right. >>reporter: so a crane is already in place. you're looking at fifth and bryan, ready to get these drill pieces below, 500 feet long. interest are works to this box, launch opening is in an area very busy and they cannot shut that street down during the day. they will have to do it overnight. if we come back out here live, this piece isn't actually going to be lowered into the ground until about 1:00 this morning. they'll do it overnight, according to the folks here. central subway should be in place and ready for service by 2019. live in san francisco, claudine wong, ktvu news. >> thank you, claudine. oakland police are looking for the person who gunned down

a 21-year-old woman last night in front of her toddler. the shooting happened just before 8:45 on 54th street just west of shaddick avenue. police say the woman was near her car when she was shot several times. she later died. her small son was in the car. >> i work for the funeral home. i'm tired of seeing picking up girls, boying, these are young kid. we are losing our youth. >> police officers and chief howard jordan played with the boy and tried to keep him occupied as they investigated the shooting of his mother. it's not clear what the boy might have seen. the san jose police department today introduced its new focus built around the letters rciti. they pronounce it our city. the letters stand for respect, crime prevention, investing in their people, transportation -- or transparency and innovation.

department officials say they're trying to simplify and focus their mission in light of budget and personnel cuts. >> we need to answer the question of what is the san jose police department doing in order to, a, improve its internal operations, but, b, really drive those crime numbers down and what are we going to do in the long term that's going to not only have a positive effect on the department but on the quality of life in our city as well? >> gang enforcement will be a key part of the san jose police department's new emphasis. a new development in a horrific crash that sent a car into a san jose home and left an innocent person fighting for their life. after a couple of cool days, the bay area may be headed for another warmup. >>reporter: oo mix of families, former president and the current commander in chief in texas to dedicate the official george w. bush presidential center. i'm casey steigal in dallas. i'll have that coming up.

rescue crews in bangladesh are in a desperate race against time to free survivors from the rubble of a collapsed factory. workers have discovered 40 people trapped in a room of the building pinned in by debris. so far they've rescued 12 of them, at least 238 people were killed when the building fell down yesterday.

police had ordered the building evacuated tuesday when they spotted cracks in the walls. but factory officials refused and kept more than 2000 people working. the coast guard says a spark from cleaning was the likely cause of an explosion last night on fuel barges on the mobile river in alabama. three people were critically injured in the explosions. the blast also forced the evacuations of a nearby shipyard and a docked cruise ship. people from the texas town of west are gathered right now at a memorial service to remember the 14 people killed last week in a fertilizer plant explosion. firefighters and other first responders formed a procession this morning from west to the nearby city of waco. the memorial is being held there at baylor university. president obama is scheduled to speak at the memorial any minute now. before that funeral today, though, the president and first lady helped dedicate the library and museum that chronicles the legacy of former president george w. bush.

police released this photo of the man they say robbed a bank of america branch in elcamino reale just before 1:30 yesterday. they say he passed a threatening note and displayed the handle of a gun in his waistband. he's described as a white man in his 50s, about six feet tall. police say he was wearing a fake mustache and possibly a dreadlock wig. two big rigs crashed early today on northbound 880 in pedas. chp responded to a hit and run in dickson earlier this morning. officials say a semi crashed into another big rig and took off. four lanes were closed while a tow truck removed the 50-foot trailer. officers say there were no injuries. the fog really pushed in overnight. still we have stubborn patches coastline and around the better and especially up in the north bay. here's our live camera looking at san francisco out in the distance. a solid deck of overcast that

will continue to impact our temperatures, of course, trending them all downward. storm tracker, the overall fog pattern add the main focus that leads to the overcast is focused in the north bay, sonoma county, marin county. you can see some overcast around petaluma. still mostly cloudy skies for san francisco and oakland with still some patchy fog over the next few hours. basically most of the afternoon, especially right around san francisco. more cloud cover. here you can pick out more clearing from santa cruz, san jose to morgan hill. still we have the fog hugging parts of the bay area shoreline. as far as current temperatures updated for your 12:00 hour. they are ranging from the chilly 50s out towards san francisco and half moon bay. warmest locations inland in the 60s out toward fairfield, antioch and livermore. san jose right now checking at 66 degrees. for today patchy clouds. today will be the coolest day of the week. tomorrow clearing skies. we're going to warm up those number its, especially inland. and then the weekend no rain clouds to worry about and

temperatures will be trending upward for both saturday and sunday. this area of low pressure producing the chance of a few showers down towards southern california, not for us, but, of course, it has reenforced that southerly flow that has pushed the fog a bit closer to the bay area. so for today more clouds, we're dealing with that. clearing skies inland. a temperature drop, temperatures ranging from the upper 50s for the beaches, not much of a chance in it the current levels. warmest locations around 72 to 73 degrees. here is our forecast model. we'll put this into motion. still the fog hugging the coastline. once again the clouds on the increase for tonight and into your friday morning. so we will have some fog to contend with for the friday morning commute and possibly some drizzle once again. we have some drizzle out there this morning. temperatures later on this afternoon, san francisco only in it the upper 50s, san jose 70 degrees and redwood city 66. here is a look ahead, your five- day forecast with your weekend always in view, and you can see temperatures trending upward from friday and saturday. by the weekend warmest locations inland on track to reach the low- to mid-80s.

and it looks like the warmup will stick around into next week for monday and into tuesday. but today it almost looks like a summertime weather pattern out there. it looks like the middle of june with a the fog a constant factor coastside and around the bay. it's nice to be out there it, not too hot. some people aren't a big fan of the heat. >> warming back up next week. >> warming back up, but nothing too extreme. >> thank you, mark. today more than 100 restaurants around the bay area will donate part of their proceeds to helping people with hiv and aids. this annual event is called dining out for life. restaurants all over the bay area are taking part from marin county to the south bay. they will donate 25% of their proceeds to local groups. and this year diners can register to win prizes, including a trip to costarica. talk about changes coming to some u.s. currency, that's coming up next. also the groups threatening to file a lawsuit over cruz of the new 49ers' stadium.

u.s. stocks still higher, but only slightly this morning after claims for unemployment benefits fell and name brand companies like royal caribbean and harley davidson reported healthy profits. taking a live look at the big board, the dow currently up 11, the nasdaq up 18, s & p up four. a coalition of civil rights groups is threatening to file a lawsuit over what it calls a lack of minority-owned companies working on the 49ers new stadium in slaryk.

however, stadium project officials say they gave contractors of all races an equal opportunity. but representatives of the civil rights groups say they could not find any minority- owned companies among the contracts awarded. the company in charge of the stadium cruz says it followed the law -- stadium construction says it followed the law in the stadium contracts. for the fourth time in history, the $100 bill will be getting a makeover. the federal government says the changes will include new security features. the front has a blue 3- dimensional ribbon that moves when the note is tilted. the inquell, the bell as well as the number 100 on the back right hand corner changed from copper to green, depending upon the tilt. the new bill will begin circulating this october. tonight on ktvu news at 5:00, it is spreading, there is no known cure and dozens have died from it. what we know about a new strain of the bird flu and what's being done to keep it from
