traffic. steve is here with the weather. >> it will be warmer today. pam, sorry about the allergies. actually they have gone down but they'll go back over the weekend. so you're suffering, i hate to say it. temperatures begin warming up. start inland the warmest jump by the coast, 50s and 60s. looking at highway 24 here. and looks good at walnut creek and oakland. and we have an injury crash westbound 4 with chp responding along with the fire department. the chp is investigating a deadly accident overnight. it happened shortly after 2:00 this morning in the area of stone valley road and round hill road. chp says the driver veered off the road, hit a pole. the chp says speed may have played a role in the crash. they have reopened stone valley road. 6:01. back to the desk. the staff at an elementary school will go back to their campus today and find major damage because of a major fire

overnight. it happened at james madison elementary school. we are there to tell us why this fire could have been a lot worse. >> reporter: yeah, you know, the pile, it looks like a pile of match sticks behind me. you can see where the fire completely gutted six portable units that had only been delivered to the campus 24 hours ago. we have exclusive video of firefighters, more than a dozen total who got the call just after midnight. a fire investigator said the fire is considered suspicious. it broke out here at james madison elementary school and took crews about 20 minutes to knock out. about two or three families fled if homes nearby on willow avenue. large volume of fire when we pulled up. the smoke was visible across town. we knew we actually had a fire before we even got here. >> reporter: and luckily, no one was smut the families are

become in their homes. police say there were teenagers heard in the area just before the fire and a door was left open to one of the portables. there was no breech in a fence however. authorities say that the fire appears to have started in a bathroom located in the center of the units. and since these units had only arrived within the past 24 hour, the electricity was not hooked up. you can see how extensive the damage is. and we haven't received a total yet on how much it will cost to repair everything. they brought any portable units so they could stay here. and that's not going to happen. so we will try to check in later and let you know what they have to say about it. also new this morning, we want to update a story from oakland we first reported at 4:30 this morning. we are now on the scene of that water main break at 24th and

harrison street. how does it look now? >> reporter: yeah, not too bad. good morning to you. take a look for yourself. not too much water on the street here on harrison street. mainly on the side of the street here. but crews say that they got a call of the water main break around 3:05 this morning as we go to video of the water main break. and they shut off a six-inch cast iron main that ruptured at about 3:32 this morning. a lot of water was gushing at the time but crews were able to shut that down. so far, we heard reports that about 24 customers were affected. and i just got off the fun with east bay officials and they tell us only about seven customers are affected which includes a apartment complex nearby and a tire shop. right now, no crews at the moment. they were here earlier but they have to dig through the concrete. so they are waiting for crews to have larger equipment to cut

through there so they can get to the pipe and fix it. and again, i just got off the phone with east bay mud and they tell us that the water should be fixed around 7:00 this morning. so far, about seven customer affected this morning. they should be done in the morning. live here in oakland,. we have new information on breaking news from oakland. we first reported at 4:30 that discovery of a suspicious package or device, it shut down the intersection of 48th and international. now a person walking down the street first spotted it shortly after 4:00 this morning. excuse me. they did what oakland police want tow do, they called. police raced to the scene. officers determined the device did not pose a danger and they reopened the intersection. following a major new development in the boston marathon bombing case. just hours ago, the surviving suspect was moved out of a boston hospital and take on the

a massachusetts prison. dzhokhar tsamaev is now being treated in the medical ward of an old army base. that facility treats prisoners and detainees who need special long-term medical care. the 19-year-old is still recovering from injuries suffered during his atemperatured get away last week. and now the suspected boston bombers apparently had a second target, times square in new york city. the surviving bomb suspect told investigators he and his brother decided to set off as many as six bombs in times square. the fbi says it was a spontaneous decision by those two brothers days after the boston bombing and just before that shootout with police near boston early friday morning. the boston bombing case is now fueling the already very emotional debate over america's immigration policies. the chairman of the house committee says the terrorist attack could lead to major changes in the way the united states grants asylum to

immigrants. the two suspects are chechen brothers from russia. they came to the u.s. with their family 10 years ago. the latest official casualty count shows that 260 people were hurt in the boston marathon bombings. a lot more than first reported. 31 people are still in boston- area trauma centers including many of the victims who lost legs or feet. and now the critical injuries will need centers pensive prayings. -- need expensive operations. one charity group has already raised $25 million in corporate and charity donations. the golden state warriors are scheduled to play their first home game of the play- offs. now to explain whether one of the star players is expected to take the court. >> reporter: good morning. yes, we're here inside the arena. and take a look around. i want to give you a look at

game. if you look back at the two regular season games that we played denver here, they were very close. exciting to be back home especially coming off a win on the road. excited to see what the crowd will look like on a friday. >> reporter: and it's going to be a big crowd. let's again talk about what we can expect tonight in terms of, traffic on 880, both the baseball game and warriors game here. and security, warriors have upped the security this season. anyone who comes in has to pass through metal detechers and they have to get their bags checked. that does take a while. we have seen with increased security with the giants, that slowed things down. warriors trying to deal with the crowd by opening half an hour earlier than they usually do. they hope at 5:30 with the game happening at 730:67:89 opd, they are increasing security at both games and they have called in the sheriff's department to help out with their bomb detecting dogs. all of that is going to be

highway 4. and we have an injury crash southbound 880 at 237 on the diamond lane ramp. still some slow downs there associated with that crash. a lot of emergency vehicles are there. and move along and take a look at the commute, the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights usually go on around this time. and san francisco, north and southbound 101 traffic, that looks good. a very, very good morning. low clouds in place. last hour, cloudy. the low cloud deck continues the increase the thickest. breaks to the south. but again, it's solid here. although it will burn off sooner today. temperatures bottoming out yesterday. only going 70 and a good fog bank up in the north bay. san francisco 59. going 62. and san jose, 69 to 72.

although yesterday was 73. so warmer that way. a warmer forecast but only a little bit today. many so over the weekend. morning low clouds continue to be there. inching up because the low is responsible for a cool down. and high pressure is. cooing in. 40s and 50s on the map. san francisco, 59 yesterday but yet bump up. mostly sunny later today. and went with 62 degrees. so that's a little bit below average for this time of year. should be 63, 64. not much in the way of anything else except high pressure. and temperatures will warm up. tomorrow more so. west breezes there. but again about half what it was yesterday. travis southwest 14. yesterday at this time, gusts of 33. inland temperatures about five degrees up 60s around the bay. 50s and 60s closer to the

time is now 6:15. real close call for a race car driver in iowa. his car crashed anexploded. it crashed after an axle broke. another driver jumped out of his car and pulled the driver out of the wreckage to safety. a preliminary hearing is set for this morning for the driver accused of killing a san francisco high school student. he was celebrating her 17th birthday when she was killed last month. investigators say the 28-year- old karen brewer was under the influence of alcohol when the car hit the teenager. brewer entered a plea of not guilty to felony charges in connection with the death. we are following new developments regarding the garment factory collapse in bangladesh. thousands of angry workers

armed with sticks have take on the the streets to protest poor billing safety standards there. this as hundreds of rescuers continue to look for survivors. 290 people are now confirmed dead. the billing collapsed wednesday, one day after cracks were reported in the structure. time now 6:16. the senate voted to advance a bill that would require online retailers to start charging sales tax. it would be sent to the state where the shopper lives the. senate will take a final vote on the bill on may 67th. that's when senators return from a week-long vacation. the u.s. house of representatives is expected to pass a bill to put an end to some flight delays. it would help the faa put employees back to work. >> reporter: the senate approved the bill last night. and the house signaled it would approve the bill with a vote this morning. the house returns to capitol hill in about 45 minutes. here's a break down of the

flight delays reported this week blamed directly on staffing reductions. sunday it was first day air traffic controllers were furloughed. that led to 400 flight delays. the number tripled on monday. on tuesday, just over 1,000 delays. and yesterday, the faa said more than 860 flights were held up on wednesday because of furloughed air traffic controllers. thursday's estimates are due out in the next couple hours the. bill passed by senators last night gives the faa flexibility to move about $253 million into its operations account. that would end the current furloughs. but this is only a temporary fix. it helps through the end of the year which ins september 30th. after that, more automatic budget cuts kick in unless congress comes up with a long- term spending plan. we will check in on the house floor next hour to see if a vote is taking place to help the faa. for now, errorring live in washington. new concerns this morning

about the drinking water in american canyon. officials say the water contains the chemicineed e stan set by the department of public health. and it's the first time it's been found in the water since 2005. high levels have been connected to liver, kidney and central nervous system problems and also a higher cancer risk. but health officials are saying the levels found this water does not pose a health risk. the recovery of the bay area's housing market has spread past the valley, up the peninsula and through san francisco. and now it's starting to help lift home values in the east bay as well. homes in 34 bay area zip codes are now within 1% of their 2006 peak prices. often the properties are selling in less than a week and for more than the asking price. however it's not even with

homes in other areas. the fate in the ongoing bat toll keep the kings in sacramento could be decided in a few weeks the. nba is expected to vote by may 13th on whether the kings should stay or move to seattle. and now fans could get a better idea of which way the league is leaning during a meeting on monday. the vote comes almost five months after the owners accepted a purchase offer from investors in seattle. well the sharks are headed to the play-offs. and you can get tickets today. hopefully. if you're lucky. tickets for the first three home games go on sale at 10:00 this morning. they can be bought on ticketmaster or at the box office. there's a limit of eight tickets per customer. if you are planning to go to hp, wristbands will be handed out at 8:00 and then go on sale two hours later. >> okay. >> i bet there's people there already. >> i would imagine. i know there's a crash out

there. sal, where is this one? yeah, northbound 880 at high street and fruitville. reported at both places. and we heard that the fire department and medics have been called there. in fact, we will put up the 880 camera. it would be under neither, see where it says live time time traffic, underneath that to the left of the 880 sign, that's where it would be. and now the fire department is on the way. i see a officer there coming up to the accident scene with the flashing lights. just got on the freeway at 66. we will see what happens and see if it starts slowing traffic down. the bay bridge toll plaza, a five to 10 minute delay. more on the five side than the 10. the traffic is slowing down. once you get to the bridge, it looks good. and driving in the south bay, southbound 237, still clearing a crash here and it's causing the slow down on 880 southbound approaching 237.

welcome back. time now 6:25. the union city police found a surprising solution when it came to finding a new sketch artist for the department, one of its own detectives. he had no prior training but he volunteered for the job. just a few months ago, this was the best work he could come up with. since then, the police department sent him to special art classes in southern california. and he is already making a lot of progress. take a look at that. one of his sketches even helped identify a home invasion robbery suspect. >> we happened to have one of our outside of the agency, one of the task force members came

in the center of the portable units here. and that is where the fire investigator says a bathroom was located. neighbors are reporting that they heard teenagers in the area just before they heard the fire. and now we have video of firefighters, more than a dozen total who got the call just after midnight. the fire investigator told ktvu that the fire is suspicious and it took crews 20 minutes to knock it out. flames shot about five stories high into the air. fire and a smoke column could be seen for miles. about two or three families fled from their homes because they say the fire came too close. >> surprising. just about 20 feet from the fence line from the bedroom window. so we got to get the heck out of there. >> you can see, there was six portable units. they were just delivered earlier in the day. there was no power to them just yet. they were being brought in as temporary rooms for the school

while the school was under renovation. >> reporter: and now the portables were brought in because of renovation ask the units were going to be used by officials with the district. headquarters is located right here. no luck ring leader, no one was hurt and everyone is back inside their homes now. officials say the electricity was not hooked up to the portables. they are considering arson but it could be some kids goofing off who accidentally set off the fire. and you can see there's smoke rising from the portables where it seems there's knot another hot spot that flaired up again we will keep an eye on that. new this morning, police are certaining for suspects -- are searching for suspects after a man was shot in the arm. that happened at about 2:00 a.m. on 6th and howard streets the. man is being treated aat the time hospital. no arrests have been made. and overnight, hayward police are searching for suspects in a drive-by

shooting. that happened at about 11:45. police say two suspects in a car pulled up outside a home and started shooting and. then someone inside the house fired back. and the man on the porch was wounded in the foot. he has non-life-threatening injuries. new this morning, give you an update on story from oakland we first told you about at 4:30. we were at the scene of a water main break at 4th and harrison street. what's it like now? >> well, not exactly the start that residents wanted to start their friday off with. mainly standing water here along harrison street. crews are able to shut down water mains to make sure that the water doesn't continue to flow. but again, about seven customers are starting off without water. and look at video that was shot this morning, according to east bay, they got the call about 3:00 this morning about the break. water was gushing out at a good rate at the time. and crews were able to shut

down what is described as a six- inch cast iron pipe. it's unclear how it broke this morning. crews were here this morning and they were able to shut off the water main but there's still water seeping through the street that we have noticed. east bay says she shut off the main about 3:32 this morning. only about seven customers are affected including a apartment complex and a tire shop. back out here live, this is the tire shop that is affect bid the water main break. they are bringing in another crew to cut through the concrete so they can get to the pipe. and they say that the water main is expected to be fixed sometimes late they are morning but they couldn't give us an exact time. live in oakland. we're following several new developments in the boston marathon bombing case. just hours ago, the surviving suspect was moved out of a boston hospital to a federal prison medical ward in

massachusetts. in the meantime, the father of the two suspects has delayed his trip here to the united states indefinitely. and now he was expected to fly to boston today to meet with investigators and possibly visit his surviving son. but his wife says he's decided to put off this trip because of health reasons. there are reports she called an ambulance to his house in russia early this morning. the investigation into the boston marathon bombings has now shifted to the city of new bedford, massachusetts. the fbi is searching a landfill there for evidence in last week's attack in boston. the landfill is right near the younger's brother's college dorm room where he was shotted shortly after the bombings. the 11:00-year-old boy from here in the bay area, wounded in the bombings, he's finally

out of the hospital. he returned back to the scene of the explosions yesterday. he received an autographed hat from a boston bruins player. a boston police officer took his pin off his own uniform and gave it to him. he is still undergoing treatments in boston. but he should be cleared to return back to the bay area next week. we want to go back over to sal who has been busy on this friday morning. it is not friday night. >> and the traffic is going to be affected by a crash on 880 northbound. we told you about this last time between high and fruitville, there's a crash, an injury crash blocking the left lane. and look how it's become here on 880 northbound. very slow from the coliseum driving up to the crash scene. just north of high street. give yourself extra time. southbound traffic also slowing down in this area. and the other crash we have is highway 4. they're making progress on this one. but traffic is very slow all

and now the westerly breeze is still there. but nothing compared to yesterday. warmer pattern. today is the transition day. and then warmer into the weekend. i don't think it will get hot but maybe upper 80s well inland. 60s and 70s closer to the coast. 40s and 50s, cool this morning after yesterday's cool down. but high pressure looks like it's here. and maybe the rest of the month. although, although, early may is looking very, very cool. we will see morning fog, warmer, westerly breeze in place. nothing compared to yesterday. today 50s, 60s and 70s. a few upper 70s to near 80. probably not today but more likely tomorrow, 80s inland. and mid-80s by sunday. and warmer early next week. big crowds are expected at the arena in oakland for the golden state warrior's first home game of the play-offs. got to go inside to get the excitement and security that the fans can expect. >> reporter: that's right.

a man in his 20s veered off the road this morning, slammed into a pole. speed may have been a factor in the crash. and we now have new information on the breaking news in oakland we told you about at 4:30. the discovery of a suspicious device shut down the intersection of 48th and international. in the last hour, the police determined there was no danger in that intersection. and it has been reopenedded. and six portable units were destroyed by a fire at james madison elementary school. the flames shot more than 50 feet into the air. investigators will be checking video trying to figure out how that fire started. firefighters are also investigating what started the fire on the second floor of a historic building near downtown san jose. we are at the scene all morning. and you just search warrant spoke with the fire captain. >> reporter: yes, that's right. and firefighters have been here all night, watching this

building. they fear it might collapse. and the fire, the captain told me, this building already leans this way to the south. you can see the bottom half of the floor is leaning. and you can see up on the second floor, it's completely blackened and destroyed. it's located on first street near 280. a building engineer is supposed to come here today to see if it's okay for firefighters to come inside to see if there are any bodies inside the building. and now let's go to a photo that the san jose fire department tweeted last night showing flames shooting out of the second story window. it started at 9:30 last night. firefighters were told it was vacant. and because of the age of the building, it was unsafe to enter. it was built in 1884 and used to be an old saloon. and most recently, it was a museum. that it's now isit sappnted

been suspended from school accused of ganging up on a teammate. and you might remember the team made headlines one year ago. it finished third in the little league world series back in pennsylvania. they were suspended from the high school this month for getting into a scuffle with another boy. and now that boy's mother says her son was bullied. the parents of the other boys say the incident has been blown out of proportion. the first day of the nfl draft is over. no local college players were picked. but it didn't take long for the 49ers to grab the player they wanted after a trade with the cowboys. they moved up 13 spots for the number 18 pick in the first round. now the oakland raiders traded their number three pick in the draft to miami from the 12th and 42nd selection. the team wanted the cornerback out of the university of houston. last fall, he almost died at a practice. her to a major blood vessel

clear skies for very few. mainly cloudy to mostly cloudy. plenty out there. water temperatures continue to be really cold, upper 40s and low 50s p. wouldn't -- wouldn't take much to get the clouds burning away again. from the 50s, 60s, low 70s, low to mid-70s but tough call for san francisco, only up to 62 which is still below average for this time of year. warmer forecast today but not really too much. just that day we're transitioning. the key though is the wind. nothing compared to yesterday. the rest of april looks warm to early warm. early may is looking very cool. which wouldn't surprise me one bit. four months of nothing and then may and june, probably nothing but fog and below normal temperatures. 40s and 50s right now.

there's a rescue operation underway. so far, four people have been rescued. because of the building -- the cause of the building collapse still not known right now. senator john mccain says it's time for the united states to get more directly involved in the conflict in syria. this comes amid a report that the syrian government has used chemical weapons against rebels. john mccain wants to establish a no-fly zone over syria and give the rebels weapons. yesterday, the defense secretary said the u.s. has varying degrees of confidence the syrian government has used chemical weapons. ac transit has put its plans for higher bus fares on hold. the agency says because ridership and revenues are rising, it could consider cutting what it cost to ride the bus. before they make any new decision on fares, they'll hold public hearing, probably later

this year. a san francisco man and his sister survived the sinking of their at in the caribbean by swimming 14 hours to reach land. they were on a fishing trip sunday when water flooded the engine room of their boat. the captain gave them life preservers and told them to jump overboard and they swam 14 hours to shore. they are now recovering from severe dehydration. they plan to fly back to the u.s. on saturday. i understand the captain and crew finally rescued out there. >> wow. what's happening on 880 right now? >> well, still slow. we have a crash 880 northbound. and this crash has made a mess of the freeway. use 580 instead. they're clearing it now but the damage is done. bay bridge toll plaza is not too bad. let's go to steve. a lot of clouds in place. it will be a little warmer today. not a lot.
