it's friday, april 26th. tara moriarty is live to explain what is next in the james madison elementary fire investigation. >> reporter: good morning. the headquarters is located here. over to the right, you can see a fire truck just arrived here on scene. they tried to put on a hot spot that flared up there. the fire was raging last night according to neighbors. we have exclusive video of firefighters, more than a dozen who got the call after midnight. the fire investigator told ktvu is the fire is suspicious. it took crews 20 minutes to knock it out. fire and the smoke column could be seen for miles. about two or three families

fled from their homes on nearby willow avenue because they said the fire came too close. >> our neighbors were banging on the window. i looked out the back window. we could see nothing but red and we see the flames. >> reporter: luckily, no one was hurt. everybody is back inside their homes. the portages were brought in less than -- portables were brought in less than 20 minutes ago. they've ruled out electrical acs a cause -- as a cause. they said it could be kids goofing off, accidentally setting the fire. you can see the tree, completely singed, just to give you an idea how intense the flames were. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:0 it. the chp -- 7:02. the chp is trying to fick out what led up to a deadly accident in alamo overnight.

it happened on stone valley road near roundhill road. the chp says the driver veered off the roadway and hit a pole before their car came to a stop on its roof. the driver died at the scene. the chp says speed may have played a role in the crash. 7:02. new this morning, some water problems in one east bay neighborhood. several customers have no water service after an early-morning water main break in oakland. first reported about 3:30 at 24th and harrison streets. ktvu's brian flores is right there. so when do they think the water will be back on for the folks, brian? >> reporter: just a few hours, dave. good morning to you. take a look for yourself. this is the water main break. the water relegated to the side of the street. not a huge amount of water but crews are able to come here, this morning, roughly about half an hour after the first call came in to shut down the water. so it doesn't seep more water

on the streets. about seven customers starting off this morning without any water. as we look at video short early this morning, according to east bay m.u.d., they got the call at 5:30. water was gushing out at a pretty good rate at the time. the crews were able to shut it off pretty quickly. they say it's a 6-inch water pipe that ruptured. they say they were able to shut down the main roughly at 3:35. but east bay m.u.d. says only seven customers are affected, including an apartment complex and -- and a apartment complex -- and an apartment complex. crews are expected to be here to fix this cast iron pipe within the hour, the 6-inch cast iron pipe. as we take it out here live. this is the crew arriving. they are expected to cut

through the concrete here to get to the pipe. they say they will do whatever it takes to fix the pipe. the water will be back on roughly around 11:00 this morning or noon. good news for definitely customers that are awaiting water. we're live in oakland, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we also want to give you an update on a story from oakland we first told you about at 4:30. a suspicious device found at 48th and international, police shut down that intersection. someone walking down the street first saw it at 4:00 this morning. oakland police then raced to the scene. 90 minutes later, police determined the device did not pose any danger and reopened the intersection. it's still not clear why police thought the object was suspicious. we're following a major new development in the boston bombing case. just hours ago, the surviving suspect was moved from a boston hospital to a massachusetts

prison. jahar tsarnaev is being held in tharmy base. the 19-year-old is recovering from injuries that he suffered during his attempted getaway last week. the latest casualty figure shows that 260 people were injured in the boston bombing. that's far than first reported. 31 people replain in boston area trauma centers, including many victims who lost their legs or feet. these critical injuries require very expensive operations. one charity group has already raised $25 million in individual and corporate donations to help pay the hospital bills. the boston bombing case is now fueling the already- emotional debate over america's immigration policies. the chairman of the house judiciary committee said the terrorist attack could lead to major changes in the way the u.s. grants ai sum to

exceed the standard public health, however, health officials say the water found in american canyon does not pose a health risk. vallejo police have returned almost 60 pounds of pot to two medical marijuana dispensaries rated last year. the vallejo times herald also reports that hundreds of dead plants were given back. the move comes after a judge tossed out one days against the dispensaries and prosecutors dismissed another. vallejo police say they will continue to investigate medical marijuana stores that they feel are being used as a front for criminal activities. san mateo county sheriff deputies arrested two people found to be in possession of cash, weapons and thousands of dollars worth of drugs. 20-year-old carey sign and

controllers. the senate approved the plan last night. this, of course, after a week of flight delays. washington insider jamie dupree joins us via skype. this issue has really become a political football on capitol hill. >> reporter: yeah, it has. when you look at it, the outcome that we'll have today with house approval expected in the coming hours of this plan, it's pretty much what was offered to the white house about six, seven weeks ago but the obama administration had rejected it. basically, the idea is, you let the department of transportation, which is the umbrella group over the faa, give them more ability and more leeway to move money around so they can take money from prime ministers deemed less significant and move them into other areas making sure there's no furloughs. the plan zipped through the senate without a vote. it should be voted on in the next couple of hours in the house. earlier in the week, tori, democrats flatly said there was no way they would let something like this through. in the end it seemed like the

democratic leadership blinked when a number of democrats rushed to stop the lays. >> a lot of people say the democrats were trying to make all of these sequest teres as pain -- sequesters as painful as people. so doesn't this mean that people will be coming with hat in hand saying we need money as well. >> reporter: this is not new money. it's not like they appropriated $250 million. this is just telling the transportation department and the faa, look, you can move up around -- you did move around up to $330 million. lits basically saying, since the congress is not interested in detailing, it's basically saying you ship around as you see fit. the one thing congress has not done in recent years is getting down to the nitty-gritty about what should be funded or not.

they've got about the number but not prioritizing the federal agencies. some people are saying this is new money. this is not new money going to the faa. it will be just taken to other areas of the transportation department. >> you are saying it's unlikely that congress is gonna wipe out any of the sequestration cuts? >> reporter: i don't see that happening at all. i've been listening to a number of budget hearings. the refrain from republicans has been repeatedly made to these budget officials, don't think the sequester will be done away with. one important point, the obama administration budget for 2014 that would start in october, that assumes the sequester is wiped away. i don't see that happening right now. i think republicans have decided that they are gonna stick with it, they see a federal government that's big enough, they think, to swallow cuts bike the $85 billion they've kicked in on march 1st. >> the bottom line, when will

aaron hearn. pam cook has more. >> aaron hearn is out of the hospital. but the healing process, just beginning. he's still in a wheelchair. he and his family decided to head out to the streets of boston wherer was injured. shawn thornton of the boston bruins gave him an autographed hat and a boston police officer gave him a pin off his uniform and gave him. >> i cannot say enough about how -- how amazing the staff at children's hospital was. >> reporter: now, aaron has had two surgeries so far for shrapnel wounds. he's still undergoing treatments in boston. he's hoping to be cleared to come back here to the bay area. now, aaron is hoping to be back home in time for his 12th birthday but that's right around the corner, in fact,

investigation. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning. we're here on first street across from the interstate 280 entrance. you can see just how badly damaged this historic building is, especially the second floor that was just devastated by the flames. this is a building -- it was built here until 1800s. it actually leans south. so right now, firefighters are waiting for a building engineer to come out and inspect it because they fear it may collapse. now, here's what the building looked like last night. the san jose fire department tweeted this picture which shows flames shooting from the second story. firefighters arrived at 9:30 last night. and knocked it down in 30 minutes. the building has been here since 1884 and was a former saloon and most recently, bike shop and a museum. many people have fond memories of it. >> everybody knew that place.

and started shooting. then someone inside the house fired back. a man on the porch was wounded in the foot and has non-life- threatening injuries. >> we have new information -- we have new information about a woman shot to death wednesday morning shot right in front of her son. she was shot in her car on 54th street near shaddock avenue. her son was in the back seat. he was not heard. witnesses say there was another woman in the victim's car and there was a loud argument before the shooting. a black four-door car was also seen leaving the crime scene. yesterday members of henderson gathered here to mourn her death. her mother made a tearful plea to the public. >> all i'm asking for is the public's help in finding my daughter's killer and bringing them to justice. >> so far there are no arrests in this case, and the hope to release a suspect description

by a bus and he has died. 7:32. we're following new developments in the boston marathon bombing case. just hours ago, the surviving suspect was moved out of a boston hospital and was taken to a federal prison medical ward in massachusetts. in the meantime, the father of the two suspects has delayed his trip to the u.s. indefinitely. now, he was expected to fly to boston today to meet with investigators and maybe visit his surviving son. but his wife says he decided to put off that trip because of health reasons. there are even reports she called an ambulance to his home in russia early this morning. now, the investigation into the bombings has shifted to the city of new bedford, massachusetts. the fbi is searching that landfill for evidence. the landfill is right near the younger brother's college dorm room. that's where he was spotted shortly after the bombings.

jones passed away today in nashville after being hospitalized for a fever and irregular blood pressure. he had number one songs in five decades and is best known for his song "he stopped loving her today. he was hospital i -- he was idolized by other singers, pete townshend, and countless others. he was 81. the mt. diablo school board has voted to fire both leaders. both superintendent steve lawrence and general council greg nolan will be let go without cause. both had contracts set to expire june of next year. many employees have been pushing for lang in leadership due to low morale and a lack of trust in the district. a 16-year-old faces felony charges in connection with multiple bomb threats made to

antioch schools. police arrested the teen after tracking down the phone number used to make the threats. students also came forward with information. authorities say the threats may be pranks but they do tie up police resources and cost the district thousands of dollars. >> i didn't want to have another evacuation and sit out in the sun for hours like in the past previous three days. >> police say the teen is suspected of making five bomb threats to deer valley and an tip okay high schools and black diamond middle school. they are still investigating a sixth threat made this week. bomb threats have caused the tracy school correct more -- district more than $101,000. officials say the expenses come from the police response to a wave of threats at tracy schools last month. schools are also instituting new security measures and will no longer accept blocked calls. two teenagers have been arrested in connection with the threats to tracy high.

welcome back. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. teachers at a san leandro school are returning to their school to find out it was burned. tara moriarty is right there. you have reaction from the school officials. tara? >> reporter: school district officials are just showing up to work now. obviously quite shocked at what happened at the back of their district office building. as you can see, quite a bit of damage there. some of them saw the footage from the fire on ktvu this morning and say they were relieved that the flames never made it near the school. you can see how extensive the damage is. we have an overhead shot that

shows how the fire gutted six portable offices near the back of the building. classes at james madison will go on as usual. ktvu was the only crew on scene after the fire broke out. we have exclusive video of firefighters, more than a dozen total who got the call after midnight. the fire is suspicious, we're told. it took crews 20 minutes to knock it out. flames shot about five stories high in the air. ge about two or three -- about two or three families fled their homes because they said the fire was too close. we spoke to someone who said the district was about to be renovated. >> this was a savings measure to help renovate leaky roofs and facilities outdated. >> reporter: so the renovations will be just put on hold for a little bit? >> probably not too long. they are pretty good at picking up and moving forward.

it happened earlier this morning in central india. 15 other -- 15 other people have been pulled from the collapsed section. police say 25 to 30 people were believed to be on the first floor of thewomen pale medical board when the ceiling caved in. this comes days after a factory building in bangladesh killed over 300 people. at least 38 people were killed in at a fire at a psychiatric hospital. the fast-moving people killed most of the people while they were in their beds. reportedly the patients were so heavily sedated they never woke up, even when the fire alarms woke up. a nurse and two paints are believed to be the only -- patients are believed to be the only survivors. protests are going in bangladesh over the collapse of a garment factory earlier this week. thousands of angry workers armed with sticks have taken to the streets to call for better

welcome back. the well-known building in san jose was badly damaged by fire overnight. it's on south first street. it used to house a bicycle shop and a museum. now, janine de la vega is there now and there's been an emotional reaction out there, janine. >> reporter: we've seen a dozen people out here. some people crying. this gentleman stopped by. he had to see it for himself. they are taking pictures of fave's bike shom. the top floor is -- bake shop. the top floor is completely devastated. the whole building is made of wood. it's an historic building here in san jose. when you pass it, you would do a double-take even before the fire. it sort of looks like the leaning tower of pisa. here's photos of flames shooting out. it started at 9:30. firefighters say when they

actually structurally safe. then they can go in to determine a cause of the blaze. right now, that's unknown. errorring live from san jose -- reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. we're following a major new development in the boston marathon bombing case. just hours ago, the surviving suspect was mosqued from a boston hospital -- moved from a boston hospital to a massachusetts prison. dzhokhar tsarnaev is being treated in the medical ward of the old fort devins army base. the 19-year-old is recovering from injuries he suffered during his attempted getaway last week. in the meantime, the father of the two suspects has now delayed his trip to the u.s. indefinitely. he was expected to fly to boston today to meet with investigators and possibly his surviving son. but his wife says he's decided to put that trip off due to health reasons. they are even reports she

called an ambulance to his home in russia early this morning. the latest official casualty figure from the boston marathon bombings was 262 people were hurt. that's a lot more than first reported. 31 victims are still in trauma centers, including many victims who lost limbs. now, these critical injuries are gonna require very expensive operations. one group has already raised $25 million and individual and corporate donations to help the victims pay their hospital bills. the boston bombing case is fueling the emotional debate on america's immigration policies. the senate says the terrorist attack could lead to big changes in the way the u.s. grants asylum to imgrants. those two suspects are from russia and came to the country with their tell ten years ago -- with their family ten years ago.

we'll see some mid- to upper 80s. probably 70s closer to it. 8:39. two teenaged drivers are back in the custody of their parents after being arrested for reckless driving. on wednesday afternoon a speeding car crashed into this home on lee avenue in san jose. a 40-year-old woman in the kitchen was critically injured. her 9-year-old daughter was pinned to the wall by the car but not seriously hurt. people who live there say two cars were racing when they lost control. police are now investigating those claims. 8:40. the federal government is stopping imports of cucumbers from a company in mexico because they are linked to a salmonella outbreak. at least 73 people in 18 states became ill after eating those cucumbers. 28 of the victims are from right here in california. the outbreak was first reported last january. none of the cucumbers should be on store shelves right now. if you want to see the full report, go to ouren chale 2

james madison elementary school. officials said classes will go on as usual today. ktvu was the only crew on scene right after the fire broke out. police provided us with some still photos as well. alameda county firefighters got the call after midnight. the investigator told ktvu the fire is suspicious. it took crews 20 minutes to knock out. flames shot about five stories high in the air and could be seen for miles. >> nothing but red and then all of a sudden we see the flames. it's just about 20 feet from the fenceline from our bedroom window. we gotta get the heck out of there. >> reporter: about two or three families fled from their homes. there were no forced evacuations. luckily no one was hurt. we spoke to the principal, he said the district office was about to be renovated and the portables were going to be used

returned almost 60 pound of marijuana to two medical marijuana dispensaries that were raided last year. the paper reports they returned hundreds of dead plants. in comes after a judge threwout one case against a dispensaries and prosecutors -- a dispensary and prosecutors dismissed another. san mateo county sheriff's deputies arrested two people who reportedly possessed cash, weapons and thousands of dollars in drugs. 20-year-old carey stynes and rebecca flores were arrested after police say they spotted stynes on his cell phone and driving. that's when they say they found a pound of marijuana and $8,000 cash in his car. after a search warrant was issued, they say more weapons, drugs and money were found in the home. that's where flores was arrested. 8:49. there are new concerns about

drinking water in american canyon this morning. officials say the chemical thm in levels that exceed the standards set by the state department of public health have been detected in the water for the first time since 2005. high levels of thm have been linked to liver, kidney, and central nervous system problems and increased cancer risks. but health officials say the levels found in the water does not pose a health risk. four members of the petaluma little league team have been suspended from school accused of ganging up on a teammate. the teammate headlined last summer when it finished third in the world series in pennsylvania. the four boys were suspended from petaluma high school earlier -- earlier this month for getting into a scuffle. that boy's mother says her son was bullied. one parent says it was blown
