chanting as playoff fever continues. mornings on 2 starts now. good morning, everyone. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, april 27th, i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. let's check in with rosemary for a quick look at the weather. it's going to be warm. >> yes. for most it will be an enjoyable one. we have low clouds and fog back this morning. a cool start to the day, a few degrees cooler than yesterday morning, but by the afternoon we'll surpass the afternoon highs from friday and in the extended forecast we're try and will continue the forming trend. i'll have your numbers coming up. morning a dozen people were detained in oakland overnight after glass bottles were thrown at sheriff deputies. it happened around 12:30 after the deputies chased a stolen car from san leandro to 106th and macarthur. the driver got out and ran near what police say was a potential side show. investigators say the

spectators started throwing bottles at deputies. the deputies mistook the breaking bottles for gun shots and called for backup. close to 100 officers showed up to help and started handcuffing people. the suspected car thief got away. alex savidge will have a live report in oakland on this story coming up. a triple shooting in north oakland has killed one and sent two others to the hospital. around 9:30 last night officers say three people were shot on 53rd near children's hospital. they were driven to the emergency room in a van. police tell ktvu one person died at the hospital. we do not know the conditions of the others. the shooting was about a block away from where a woman was fatally shot in front of her young son on wednesday night. police are searching for a man who grabbed and tried to kidnap a two-year-old girl in contra costa county. it happened there pittsburg as she was playing in her front yard on rain drop circle. it was the middle of the afternoon yesterday. police say the man walked up to the little girl, snatched her and ran. officers say the child's mother chase afford that man

threatening to call 911. he dropped the girl in bushes and kept running. neighbors say they are furious. >> honestly, there's no words to describe how angry you feel, and how you just want to catch the guy that had the audacity to take a kid in the middle of the day. >> police brought in specially trained search and rescue dogs to hunt for the suspect, but so far, no word of an arrest. investigators tell us they are looking for a white man in his 30s with dirty blond collar- length hair. he was clean-cut wearing a green shirt and blue jeans. new information this morning on who investigators say may have helped the boston bombing suspects execute their attack. ktvu's katie you des live with new details. >> reporter: investigators are combing through a landfill trying to find dzhokhar tsarnaev's laptop which may include planning details, and are trying to figure out what roles the tsarnaev's mother.

tamerlan tsarnaev were added to a terrorist database in 2001. now investigators are trying to figure out when the family may have picked upstreamist views. a man by the name of misha the fbi are looking into and if he helped the two brothers build the pressure cooker bomb. >> when misha visited us, he opened our eyes, you know. really wide. about islam. >> killed. >> reporter: the presents of the suspect -- parents of the suspects said they would come to the u.s. to aid in the investigation but late friday changed plans and remain in russia. their younger son and surviving bombing suspect's condition is improving. yesterday, dzhokhar tsarnaev was moved from boston's beth israel deaconess medical center to a federal medical center about 40 miles away. >> well, i'm glad he is not in the same hospital as my daughter anymore. i feel like she's part of history. i just hope whatever he deserves, he gets.

>> reporter: in russia, 140 people have been arrested and detained as part of an operation conducted by the russian security services. if crack-down is on individuals connected to islamic extremist organizations. russian state news agencies said yesterday, the arrest happened at a place of prayer located south of moscow. so far, no indication the arrests have any connection to the boston bombing. coming up in the 8:00 hour, we'll look into how an extremist magazine may have shown the bombing suspects how to build a pressure cooker bomb. one over the top finishers of the boston marathon will kick off the opening ceremonies of the fourth annual stair climb at at&t park today. this year's stadium stampede has brought in more than $100,000 and that money go toes the good tidings organization which provides free athletic education and art programs to bay area youth. the event begins at 9 a.m. more than 500 people are expected to participate. and as we mentioned at the top of mornings on 2. more than a dozen people were detained in

oakland after glass bottles were thrown at sheriff deputies. alex savidge live in oakland this morning with morton story. alex. >> reporter: well, good morning. this all began very early this morning, when alameda county sheriff's deputies began a pursuit. they started chasing the stolen car here in the city of san leandro. eventually that wanted driver led those sheriff's deputies into the city of oakland. [ sirens ] >> reporter: and during that chase, alameda county sheriff's department is telling us the deputies were led to a possible side show that was under way at the intersection of 106th avenue and macarthur. this was just after midnight. a large crowd gathered there and people in that crowd began to throw bottles at the deputies' squad cars. that deputy pulled up. this prompted a huge law enforcement response with dozens of officers called in from oakland police, scanlyian dough police, a.c -- san leandro police, and others.

eventually the crowd was brought under control and several people were detained in the process. the good news is that no one, including officers, were hurt during this situation. but we have been told the driver who prompted that original pursuit is still on the run this morning. live this morning in san leandro, alex savidge, ktvu, channel 2 news. the golden state warriors are up two games to one in their playoff series against the denver nuggets. deadly garment factory collapse. they are accused of forcing the staff to work despite warnings from the government about cracks in the building. the arrests come as rescuers continue to dig through the rubble with the hopes of finding more survivors. overnight, 24 people were rescued alive, but at least 600 are still missing, and more than 300 have died. a piece of landing gear possibly belonging to one of the planes destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attack has been found. new york police secured an area in lower manhattan on wednesday after surveyors discovered what appears to be a plane's landing gear. police say the part was wedged between an apartment building and a mosque. investigators say the three- foot object is twisted and rusted, but has a visible boeing identification number that investigators say will be used to find out what plane that part belongs to. >> the office of the chief medical examiner will do an examination of the area around this park to see if it's toxic

in any way. they will also check to see if there's any human remains at the site. >> the spot where the landing gear was found is about three blocks from ground zero. the next move will be to figure out how to move the piece of equipment from its narrow location. in his weekly address, president obama blames republicans in congress for the air traffic controller furloughs they're not trying to fix. >> this week the sequester hurt travelers who were stuck for hours in airports and on planes and are rightly frustrated by it. and maybe because they fly home each weekend, the members of congress who insisted on these cuts finally realized that they actually apply to them, too. >> congress has approved a bill to end the furloughs. the f.a.a. says controllers will return to normal schedules after the president signs the bill. people flying out of s.f.o. may see some delays this weekend. that's because the airport is doing another round of upgrades on one of its runways. that work will continue through monday morning and that means

only half as many planes can take off and land, and that can delay some flights. japanese authorities have lifted the ban on flying boeing 787's for commercial flights. yesterday, the jap tease transportation minister gave the go-ahead to top executives of japan air and all nipon air pays. both airlines have to take extra safety precautions and install revamped lithium ion batteries. a.n.a. is expecting to bring back the nonstop flights at the end of next month. chevron has completed repairs on an oil unit. they unveiled the restart during a conference call talking about the company's $1.8 billion 1st quarter profit. chevron is also inspecting the entire refinery, replacing pipes as needed and starting new rules for evaluating leaks. environmentalists say more work needs to be done. >> ian cal osha said there's maybe 2000 places where

corrosion was just patched, like a clamp or patching a bicycle tire. except this is a lot more dangerous. >> san ramon-based chevron is currently feeding oil into the fire-damaged crude unit. the cfo says the refinery is expected to be at full operation sometime this summer. tonight a fund-raiser is being held for the san jose family whose young daughter died in a fire more than a week ago. seven-year-old mariah gomez died when the room she and her four-year-old sister were sleeping in went up in flames on april 15. her sister got out with burn injuries but family members were overcome by smoke and fire as they tried to rescue mariah. friends of the family are holding a spaghetti dinner tonight to raise mine. it's being held at st. john's catholic church on highland avenue in san jose. the dinner runs from 6 to 9 p.m. and hundreds are expected to attend. $10 will buy you spaghetti, salad, bread and a drink and there will also be a ralph of various prizes. later this morning in oakland, anti-violence group will publicly remember the teenager killed in the aftermath of a first friday

festival. soldiers against violence everywhere says it will hold the stand-in to honor kionte campbell. the 18-year-old was shot during a first friday event in february in oakland's uptown district. today's stand-in will take place at 11:00 at 20th and telegraph boulevard. the stand-in will overlap a meeting to improve public safety in oakland. the town hall meeting is a chance for the community to help shape a plan to stop gun violence. that plan is being developed by the oakland police department's is that tee jibbing policy partnership. this morning's meeting starts at 10:00 at the cesar chavez education center on international boulevard san jose police cracked down on after school racing after a car crashed into a home and severely injured a woman. police cars and motorcycle officers lined lee avenue near lee high school yesterday afternoon, in response to wednesday's violent crash. police say two teenagers were speeding in their bmw's on wednesday when they ran into each other. one car consider reasoned into a home. a woman inside suffered severe

injuries. both drivers were arrested. and teenagers are actually being encouraged to race today and tomorrow at the cow palace. teens can take to the wheel with racing instructors at the bridgestone tires teens drive smart tour in the cow palace parking lot. the idea is to have new drivers practice maneuvers that will help them avoid accidents and also give them an experience they can't safely get elsewhere. >> we'll teach them how to catch skids, how to do an accident avoidance, and most importantly, we teach them about distracted driving is one of the most dangerous things they can do. >> the courses are free for teen drivers with a permit or a driver's license. they start at 8:30 in the morning and go till 1 p.m. today and tomorrow. space is limited. and drivers are still speeding through the new electronic toll plaza at the golden gate brunch. chp is warning that the education period is almost over and they will soon begin ticketing drivers, going faster than 25 miles per hour. they also say drivers are still using the car pool lane with only two people.

officers say while it is true that the road leading onto the bridge requires only two people for the car pool lane, you need three people to use the car pool lane at the toll plaza. keeping birds safe and alive in pet loom ma is the message dozens of protesters are trying to send to caltrans. they claim nets put under the bridges by caltrans have killed hundreds of federally protected birds. the nets were put up to prevent the birds from nesting during the highway 101 widening project. but advocates say caltrans should be using teflon instead, to keep the birds away. caltrans says it is examining all options, and that contractors have been trying to close gaps in the netting to prevent further problems. >> some san francisco neighborhoods will be getting much-needed tlc. today the department of public works is joining up with starbucks and more than 1000 volunteers to clean up san francisco neighborhoods. the event is part of giants sweep. a city-wide anti-litter

if you're planning to visit disneyland in the near future, there's one popular ride you will have to skip. disney has announced it is going to close space mountain indefinitely. the news comes two weeks after state safety regulators cited the park for hazards after a contractor injured himself when he fell from the ride in november. right now disney has no estimate of when space mountain will reopen. a coin once worth 5 cents has just sold for $3 million.

two men bought this 1913 liberty head nickel at a rare coin auction in illinois on thursday. their winning bid was more than 3.1 million dollars. the nickel is one of only five known to exist. it was once thought to be fake, and forgotten in a closet for decades before officials declared it authentic. the california gold rush is being revived and experts say there is still a lot of money to be found. in 18 49 john sutter kicked off the biggest gold rush in history. now sutter gold mining company is at it again. they believe they're still plenty of gold left in the ground in the sierra foothills and that is setting off a whole new group of 49ers. >> we simply jumped into the creeks with pans and buckets and we were scooping it up by the handful. >> the company believe there's more than 600,000 ounces of gold in the hills and at today's prices, that's about $900 million. it plans to start work at the lincoln mine in just a few

upper 70s to low 80s for the inland areas. a quick look at what you can expect for the afternoon. 70 in oakland if you're going to see the a's. 74 mountain view. 70 in san mateo. farther inland, air warmer, 84 for antioch this afternoon and the extended forecast, sort of a summer like pattern setting up. and when i say that, what i mean is the localized sea breeze isn't going to go away. at the coast, inside the bay will be generally a little more comfortable as our inland areas continue to soar into the upper 80s, low 90s, and hold there through about wednesday. back to you. several streets in downtown petaluma will be closed today. the thoond annual butter and -- 32nd annual butter and egg days parade festival starts at 10:00. 15 streets will be closed throughout the day, from washington street to d street, and keller to 2nd. the streets will be filled with artists and jewelers and food vendors. 30,000 people expected to attend. >> and security is expected to be high at this weekend's asparagus festival in stockton. thousands of people from all

over the world attend this event each year. it kicked off yesterday. stockton police say they plan to have a large number of uniformed officers inside and outside that event. >> so far, i feel very safe. i see a strong police presence out >> we are a very, very safe festival. one of the best food fests in the west. >> the festival brings in more than $300,000 each year for more than 100 charities. the discovery of a very itchy problem at a starbucks in the south bay. where it was found and the coffee house is trying to get rid of it. >> we could see land off in the distance. and started swimming that direction. >> and a sister and brother's harrowing tale of survival after a fishing trip turned into a fight for their lives. >> and a car chase early this morning leads officers into the middle of a side show in oakland. why it took such a huge police response to clear that crowd.

and macarthur overnight. alex. >> reporter: this was a dangerous situation for law enforcement as officers tried to control a crowd that had apparently gathered for a side show in oakland. everything began very early this morning, when sheriff's deputies here, alameda county sheriff's deputies chased a stolen car in san leandro. [ sirens ] >> reporter: during that chase, sheriff's deputies were led to a possible side show that was under way in oakland. at the intersection of 106th avenue and macarthur. this was just after midnight. a large crowd was gathered in the street there and some people were throwing bottles at the deputy's squad car as that deputy pulled up. that triggered a major police response. dozens of officers were called in from neighboring agencies, including oakland police, san leandro police, a.c. transit police and bart police. officers ended up detaining several people and they were able to get that crowd under control. it's unclear how many people

were eventually arrested. but in the end we know the driver from the original pursuit that began all of this was able to escape in the crowd, and that person remains on the run this morning. good news, is that no one was hurt, including any officers, during this very volatile situation in oakland early this morning. we're live in san leandro, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. and in oakland, a motorcyclist has died after a high speed chase with highway droll. around 11:00 last night chp officers attempted to pull over a speeding motorcyclist. officers say the motorcycle was reaching speeds of 90 miles an hour. the man on the motorcycle sped off on the seminary exit, but crashed head on with a car. officers say he died at the scene. the condition of the people in the car is not known, and so far, it is unclear why the motorcyclist sped away from chp. highway patrol says alcohol was a factor in another fatal crash involving a pickup truck from santa rosa on bennett valley road before 3:00 this morning.

investigators say the truck crossed into oncoming lanes and ended up crashing into a tree. the driver died at the scene. the 25-year-old passenger was received -- received minute injuries. san jose city has reached a deal with the police union on pensions. new officers will have a reduced pension and will have to work longer to collect the money. under the agreement, new hires will have to wait until they turn 60, with 32 and a half years of service to collect up to 65% of their pay. mayor chuck lee, who led the pension reform is now proposing new incentives to keep the officers, because so many have left the department. >> pay increase is important. we can also do some especially pays to reward people for performance. we're looking at some of that. maybe bonuses with one-time funds. it all depends on the fiscal ability of the city. >> the president of the san jose police officers association calls at this time worst pension plan being offered in the state. next week the union plans to file an appeal of measure b. the voter approved ballot measure responsible for the

pension reform. a nevada grand jury has dieted the man accused in a deadly shooting and crash on the las vestp. three people died as a result of february's incident, including an oakland man. 27-year-old amar harris is facing 11 felony charges including murder but in a surprise twist, he was also indicted in connection with an unrelated sexual assault that happened in 2010. harris is expected to plead not guilty to all the charges during his next hearing next month. police in hercules are investigating residential burglaries. they say 12 houses have been broken into this month and five took place on monday. in three cases police say burglars broke in through second story windows. investigators say they believe four men are connected to some of the burglaries. they say it was a n.b.a.er who spotted them in one instance and called police. some garbage collectors in fairfield are adding crime fighting to their job description. the program started last month, and is called we are looking out for you.

35 drivers for solano garbage have signed up to keep an eye on the streets and houses along their routes. if they see anything out of the ordinary, they say they will call police. >>it's probably about the best idea i've heard in a long time. we've tried other things. neighborhood watch and so on and so forth. that worked ok for a while but people have a tendency to move out and lose interest. >> the program is strictly voluntary, and the drivers won't be getting paid any extra money. they say they are doing it to help the communities where many of them live. a discovery at a campbell's starbucks has some customers feeling itchy. wednesday, county vector control confirmed bed bugs were found at the popular coffee house on south bascom avenue. a total of 10 bugs were found during the inspection. starbucks removed the soft- cushioned seats that are attracting those bugs and a spokesperson from the vector control says incidents like this are not uncommon. in san jose, budget cuts are forcing two elementary schools to close. both schools opened back in the

1960s, and many children who go to those schools have parents and even grandparents who also attended. yesterday, the district submitted the final budget reduction plan to the santa clara county office of education and under that budget, both schools will have to close their doors. >> there really isn't any fat left. every time you have to make another reduction, you're really hitting at the heart and soul of public education. and public education in allen rock. >> the superintendent says the district had no choice, and if the -- and the closures won't cover the $10 million cuts. officials may ask employees to also accept furlough days. monday, allen rock will send letters to parents explaining options for their children such as attending other schools in the district users of the daily deals website, livingsocial, are being urged to reset their passwords following a big cyber attack. the web side says 50 million users world wide are impacted. users' e-mail addresses, passwords and birth dates were

all accessed, but the company says credit card information was not affected. livingsocial is working with law enforcement to try to figure out who is responsible for the attack. honda is recalling 46,000 of its if fit sport cars because of a software glitch. it affects 2012 and 2013 models. the company says the problem is with the electronic stability control system. honda dealers will update the system for free starting next month. the san francisco man and his sister who survived that ship wreck in the caribbean sea are back in the united states. dan and skate tee suski arrived in miami yesterday after a frightening ordeal in st. l- ucia. earlier this week they went fishing when the boat they were on started taking on water. they waited to be rescued but no one came. they grabbed their life jackets and decided to swim to shore. it took them 14 hours to reach land. >> we could see land off in the distance, and started swimming that direction. and then it would disappear

of congo. he allegedly said his father wanted to buy luxury homes in the bay area but first needed money to repay irs costs and rent limousines. the couple says they went broke loaning the man large sums of money. seven medical school students are recovering after a school bus accident. yesterday morning, a car collided with the bus just south of bakersfield. the seven students were taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries. police say the 17-year-old driver of the car was also hospitalized. so far no word on what caused the crash. federal authorities are citing a nevada hospital accused of dumping its patients in california. the centers for medicare and medicaid services gave nevada 10 days to correct problems at ross and neal psychiatric hospital. the hospital has been under scrutiny since an investigation by the sacramento bee. last month, the bee reported the hospital has been improperly busing discharged patients to various california cities, including san francisco. well, today you can turn in your unwanted or expired prescription drugs at locations throughout the bay area. it's all part of national

car to 106th and macarthur where that crowd was hanging out. the driver of the stolen car got out d ravestigators say the spectators then started throwing bottles at the deputies. the deputies mistook those breaking bottles for gun shots and called in for backup. close to 100 officers showed up and detained around 10 a. dozen people. the suspected car thief got away. a triple shooting in north oakland has killed one person and put the other two people in the hospital. around 9:30 last night, officers say three people were shot on 53rd street near children's hospital. they were driven to the emergency room in a van. police tell ktvu one person died at the hospital. we do not know the conditions of the others. the shooting was a block away from where a woman was fatally shot in front of her young son on wednesday night. later this morning, an oak land anti-violence group will publicly remember the teenager killed in the aftermath of the first friday festival. soldiers against violence everywhere says it will hold a stand-in to honor kionte

campbell. the 18-year-old was shot during a first friday event in february in oakland's uptown district. today's stand-in takes place at 11:00 at 20th street and telegraph boulevard. police say they're searching for a man who tried to grab and kidnap a two-year- old girl in contra costa county. it happened in pittsburg as she was playing in her front yard. it was 1:45 yesterday, police say the man walked up to the little girl, snatched her and ran. officers say the child's mother chased after the man, threatening to call 911. he dropped the girl in some bushes and kept running. neighbors say they are furious. >> honestly there's no words to describe how angry you feel. and how you just want to catch the guy that had the audacity to take a kid in the middle of the day. >> police brought in especially trained search and rescue dogs to hunt for that suspect, but so far no word of an arrest. investigators tell us they are looking for a white man in his 30s with dirty blond collar- length hair. he was clean-cut wearing a green shirt and blue jeans.

we are gathering new information this morning on the boston marathon bombing. we now know the suspects may have learned to make the pressure cooker bombs from an extremist magazine called inspire. they may have had some additional help. katie udhes live with the latest. >> reporter: claudine, from covering stories of terrorism attacks we know bomb makers learn their craft from many sources, the internet and sometimes in-person training. who fought the boston bombers is what investigators are trying to determine. new reports say the boston bombs were likely detonated by a toy car controller. we're told that type of detonation would require a clear view of the explosives. a working theory among investigators is that one or both of the tsarnaev brothers triggered the detonation, but who or what publication taught the accused brothers how to build bombs is still a question. congressman mike rogers is regularly briefed on the investigation. >> and it is very clear when you take the totality of it,

that there was some outside counsel to these individuals on how to build and how to detonate. >> we're told that using reform control toy parts as a detonation mechanism is not found in the al qaeda web magazine inspire. which was cited in early reports as the brothers' likely bomb-making guide. however, one issue does describe how to make a pressure cooker bomb, and another suggests targeting a sporting event. that's why this ongoing search for dzhokhar tsarnaev laptop is important. it's under way at a landfill. the computer may contain details of the plot and what training led to the bombings. >> that's why that six months in russia becomes so important. and other persons of interest that i know investigators would like to talk to become versus important here. >> meanwhile, two known associates of dzhokhar picked up during a sweep in new bedford, massachusetts are held on immigration violations connected to their student visas. the fbi wants to find out find

67-year-old kenneth feinberg has worked with the families of victims of 9/11, the b.p. oil spill, the virginia tech shootings, and the colorado movie theater shooting. he runs the victims funds which provide families with financial compensation after tragic situations. now he is using his experience to help the victims of the boston marathon bombings. feinberg says he will manage the one fund, an account now nearing $26 million, established to help victims of the marathon bombing. feinberg says he hopes to start meeting with families by june 15th and get checks out by june 30th. he says he hopes he can provide people with some closure, but he knows that money can't replace a lost limb or a lost family member. most of the work he does is pro bono. one of the top finishers of the boston marathon will kick off the opening ceremonies of the fourth annual stair climb out at at&t ballpark today. this year's stadium stampede has brought in more than 100,000 dollars. the money will go to the good

continue to dig through that rubble of that building with the hopes of finding more survivors. overnight, 24 people were rescued alive, but at least 600 are still missing and morning 300 have died. a piece of landing gear possibly belonging to one of the plane's destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks has been found. new york police secured an area in lower man hat tan on wednesday after sur varves discovered what appears -- surveyors discovered what appears to be the landing gear. police say the part was wedged between an apartment building and a mosque site. investigators say the three- foot object is twisted and rusted, but it does have a visible boeing identification number. >> the office of the chief medical examiner will do an examination of the area around this part, to see if it's toxic in any way. they will also check to see if there's any human remains at the site. >> the spot where the landing gear was found is about three embox from ground zero.

officers. users of the daily deals website living social are being urged to reset those passwords following a big cyber attack. the website says 50 million users world wide were impacted. users e-mail addresses, passwords and birth dates were all accessed, but the company says credit card information was not affected. living social is working with law enforcement to try to figure out who is responsible for this cyber attack. a teenager from coopertino is back home after placing first at a national science competition in chicago. natalie inge won top honors at the bio genius challenge. the competition recognizes high schoolers who have made outstanding achievements in bio tech research. inge is a junior at monte vista high school and she designed a diagnostic tool which she says allows doctors to identify which breast cancer patients are most likely to have recurrences. >> i think breast cancer is just one of those things that i grew up seeing the impact of it everywhere.

in cal. the centers for medicare and medicaid services gave nevada 10 days to correct problems at rossen neal psychiatric hospital. the hospital has been under scrutiny since an investigation by the sacramento bee. last month, the bee reported the hospital has been improperly busing discharged patients to various california cities, including san francisco. keeping birds safe and alive in petaluma is the message dozens of protesters are trying to send to caltrans.
