high-rise and no major problems as you head out to the foster city area, this is 101 traffic which looks good as well, let's go back to the desk. the search for a killer continues. an 8-year-old girl is stabbed to death inside her own home, alex savage is there and just spoke to the principal, alex? >> reporter: she tells me it will be a challenge to help me and the students at generally lynn elementary school understand what happened to one of their classmates. 8-year-old leila fowler killed in that bold attack which happened inside of her home and one of the maintenance folks here at the elementary school is putting up a message, you can read it yourself, it says we will miss you leila fowler. it was saturday afternoon when leila fowler was attacked.

authorities say it was an intruder who came in and stabbed the little girl to death and took off and this morning that man remains on the loose. her brother was at home and came face to face with this man. so far authorities have not talked about -- [ technical difficulties, stand by ] >> leila fowler was a 2nd grader and those teachers are grieving as well as so many people who knew her. [ technical difficulties, stand by ] >> reporter: now investigators will the county sheriff's office were able to pull fingerprints from the girl's home and they were able to get dna evidence from inside the home. they are moving as quickly as possible to find whoever did this and the man is a hispanic man with long gray hair and there is still an active search underway in this area for leila

fowler's killer and i was told by one sheriff's deputy, they are expecting an announcement of some sort to come down. classes get going here at generally lynn elementary school. sheriff's deputies will be in and around the school providing extra security as students come back to class this morning. alex savage, ktvu channel 2 morning news. later today, burlingame police are expected to release more information about the stabbing of an off-duty police officers. it happened yesterday morning during a fight on park road in downtown burlingame. the uncle of one of the victims tells us his nephew, an off- duty police officer was stabbed several times, he is now listed in stable condition and it is still not clear how many people were hurt or arrested in this

incident. new concerns about wildfire dangers start today in several bay area counties. live in san rafael where a grass fire scorched a small area today, tara? >> reporter: you can tell it is going to be a warm day today and if you take a look over the fence you can see there is a patch of burning grass and it's an example of how quickly grass can catch fire. a discarded cigarette began the first one and they quickly put it out. they are beefing up training in the east bay and santa clara county and they have issued a warning that a lack of rainfall has left the area ripe for burning. california has already responded to 700 wildfires across the state and that's way above the average for this time

been caused by leaky gas pipe. two u.s. service members killed in a plane crash were based in hawaii. staff sergeant dixon of rancho cordova died when their plane crashed. two service members stationed in illinois and oklahoma also died in that crash. a hunger strike in guantanamo bay prison is growing. 100 of the 166 detainees are taking part in the protest. the protest started in february how they are being held indefinitely. the white house is working on that problem and the obama administration has pledged to close down guantanamo bay but some congressional lawmakers

are stopping that from happening. and it is taking a toll here in california and as kyla campbell reports from the washington d.c. newsroom, the unemployed you will get smaller benefit checks starting this week. kyla? >> reporter: they say those hit hard will already be in a tougher financial situation. these are affecting those who have already been receiving unemployment benefits. their weekly checks are receiving now 250 a week. these amounts do not even cover 1/3 of what they were making when theyed jobs. the unemployment is at its best in four years but the reduced benefits will force them to

that could affect home depot business as well. thank you and it is april 29th, i am dave clark. time now 6:30. in the news continuing coverage now, it is day three of that search to find the killer of an eight-year-old girl. she was stabbed to death in her home and alex savage is live at the girl's school to show us how she is being remembered this morning. alex? >> reporter: well, good morning, dave, there will be grieve counselors on hand and that's to help classmates of this young girl cope with her sudden death over the weekend when 8-year-old leila fowler was stabbed to death in her home. she was a third grader and this is the message they put up. it says we will miss you layla.

she said the little girl was a sweet little girl with a bubblely personality. they are searching for the person who killed this little girl. authorities say an intruder stabbed her to death inside her home. her 12-year-old brother was the only other person home at the time and he came face to face with the attacker. they are not talking about what the motive may have been but certainly this crime has shaken this community. they will have grieve counselors to process -- help them process what happened. >> i think it needs to be natural and there is no right or wrong way to deal with this kind of tragedy and loss. thankfully we have a lots of professionals who are trained that will be available to

everyone. >> reporter: now investigators were able to pull fingerprints from the place where the attack took place and they will have possible dna evidence. they are looking for a white or hispanic, a man with long gray hair, that is the only information put out but a command post was hut out and this is still a very active search involving sheriff's deputies and they are still searching the area for her killer and sheriff's deputies will make their presence felt at the middle school and high school here in this area and that's where some of heresyelings attend as -- her sibellings attend as well. live this morning, alex savage ktvu channel 2 morning news. we have developing news about an assassination attempt for the prime minister near his

convoy in damascus. his bodyguard was killed and his driver is in critical condition. they are getting more bold in targeting president bashar al assad regime even with high levels of security. we are getting more information on the boston marathon bombings. they are now working around the clock to try to determine if the two suspects acted alone. so far u.s. intelligence agencies have not uncovered any more information but they pointed out this investigation is still in its early stages and it is too early to say if the two suspects acted alone. meantime family friends and strangers hit the track for a bay area boy injured in the

boston bombings. bart officials are telling us about new safety measures for bart trains. live in oakland to tell us more on why this bill is needed. >> there has been an increase on bart workers and sacramento lawmakers said they have worked at a couple of other cities and will work here to keep people safe. it allows bart a prohibition order to anybody who commits offenses. the offenses can range to urinating in public and punishment ranges in terms of the type of offense, they can ban you from bart from 30 days to a year if you are caught at least three times want 90 daytime period. violence can take affect on the first offense. there are stage cards to make

sure the rules will not lead to discrimination and a person can have an administrative hearing and if a person is dependant, according to the new law, they must be modified to accommodate the tricks. there is a press conference scheduled and part officials -- bart officials are scheduled to take affect in may. we will tell you the new tool they will have to fight crime on stations. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 morning news. well, it has only been on the job for a year and a half and they are already threatening to terminate the contract of an ambulance company. janine joins us to tell us about the problems that led to this decision, janine? >> well, pam, i just spoke to a spokesperson which is the person who operates the ambulance and he said they have

taken care of the violation of how they responded to emergencies. santa clara counties require that ambulance companies arrive less than 12 minutes 90% of the time. the ambulance company violated its contract twice in october and december of 2012. ambulances did not arrive within the 12 minute timeframe and a spokesperson said they were a fraction of a percentage off but they took it seriously. >> we immediately went into action and put together a plan and hired additional personnel and put additional ambulances on the street and made sure we needed those response times and made sure it didn't happen again. >> the mercury news said the county executive said with one more violation of that type, the county may have to consider

terminating. while it didn't put patient's at risk the county would have been vulnerable if it occurred. we are reaching out to see if they are pleased with the sort of response that santa clara has given but we have been told that they have been exceeding response times and they have been told by the county they have been performing well. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 morning news. let's get sal back, you have the chopper headed for fremont? what is going on. >> news chopper 2, looking at it right on the shoulder, one badly damaged car is up on a flatbed and northbound 680 in fremont, the lanes are open and they have lifted the significant alert they have talked about and all vehicles are on the shoulder but southbound 680 was not

affected. there is a wide median and they could not see going by. some of the lanes have been reopened. let's look at the bay bridge, it is hard to see with the sun and it is backed up all the way out to the mcarthur maze and those metering lights are on. we go back to the south bay and on 101 they have an accident and traffic is backed up for at least a mile and a half for that part of san jose. >> most locations at the surface were five miles per hour, sunshine, nice to warm to hot, winds crank up tuesday to wednesday and it will be an offshore breeze and means possibility of record highs and temperatures are well above anchors 15 degrees for some, it looks like everybody will join in on a pattern and it will be

we are looking at, security is very tight and police are searching for the killer of an eight-year-old girl. leila fowler was stabbed to death in her home. the search for clues and evidence continues. police in burlingame are expected to talk about the stabbing of an off-duty police officer which happened at a fight at the vinyl club. an off-duty officers was stabbed several times. about 400,000 out of work californians will be getting smaller unemployment checks because of automatic spending cuts. those people have been unemployed for more than six months and are getting federal unemployment benefits. a burn ban get underway in the bay area and in san rafael

80s to the anterior, 60s and 70s by the coast, we are way above average, warmer wednesday and thursday, and the only question is when it returns and that's back by the weekend. the test has 6,000 members ron abney they are planning a weekend in july and it will include a party and convoy of electric cars driving to the hills of woodside. they could be flying the dream liners again in san jose before the end of next month. boeing and the airline lasted two hours and the first test flight with the lithium battery was a success.

. welcome back, dow jones industrial average is up about 30 points. nasdaq and s&p 500 up as well and lowe's is one of the places to watch, they missed an estimate on its earnings and that stock is down and lower gas prices are helping wal-mart and target. hundreds of efforts to protect birds in petaluma may have caused a delay in the highway project. they put nets on the river bridge to keep them from nesting on the widening project. wildlife experts say they have already died from being caught in those nets. state and federal laws are required to protect the birds and their nest and they have counted 50 dead birds since march 27th when that problem

was found and they are working on fixing the problem. the wikileaks whistleblower plan add protest for organizers of san francisco pride. he was named an honorary grant marshal of the pride parade but the board said, it was a mistake. gay activists planned a reversal at the office tonight at 5:00. manning is charged with leaking u.s. secrets to the wikileaks and his court marshal is set for june 3rd, a few weeks before that parade. a san francisco start up those use abandoned muni buses to provide bathrooms for the homeless. the start up said as much as 130 people can use showers and bathrooms and they are seeking grants pay for and install the bathrooms and it could cost a
