. good morning a high-speed chase leaves a car badly damaged. we will tell you more about this straight ahead. they are trying to get the fire under control on 200 acres. we will show you where they are now. and there is a red flag warnings, we will tell you who is affected next. and a connection for 8-year- old leila fowler, the latest on the investigation, we will have more coming up. this is ktvu channel 2

morning news. >> good morning, thank you for waking up with us, first day of may right now high winds are winning around parts -- whipping around parts of the bay area plus fires are burning up north and we have team coverage this morning. our meteorologist steve paulson is monitoring the wind gusts and claudine wong is right in the middle of the action in sonoma county and we can see the smoke and the wind and we understand the win and spoke is not the only problem. are you okay? >> no. i am not. >> reporter: my eyes are burning and fire continues to burn along the fire line and i will give you an idea of where we are, this is knight's valley and crews are headed down there because there is so much fire we can't see all through this

area and they are trying to get in front of this area and it has picked up in the last few minutes. this fire is one of several that are burning and we came from napa, high winds are fueling a fire over there. this is one of several you are looking at just off highway 128, a lot of smoke and fire has picked up. it started from power lines which delayed the process of getting in and getting around it and the problem at this point is winds are high and as we took a walk up the road we saw much more fire up there and we know resources are a problem. this was not fire season and they were not ready for multiple fires through the night. they just started training people and there is a big need for people out here and they just don't have many people. it is literally over the ridge and i want to pan away so i can

show you some of what we see. this is a bunch much vin yards and you can see a truck. if we panhandle over, you can see -- pan over, you can see the smoke and that's where the bulldozer is right now. they are very busy just trying to get ahead of everything that is burning at this hour. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 morning news. let's head to steve paulson because everybody wants to know what is the situation throughout the day. >> what vineyard? >> we are on highway 128 and we didn't see a sign to let us know what vineyards they are but this is highway 128. the strongest gusts are at the highest elevations and we do have a red flag warning and high winds advisory and we have a northeast wind, some of the

higher gusts northeast, many are going above 1,000 feet but i don't care if the fire starts above 1,500 feet because if you get a southeast wind it can make it worse. so% for some -- 10% for some and hot 90s, for some there is no wind at all and for others it will be a blustery day but it will be warm for everybody. the city of brentwood is going to reopen a firehouse today. tara moriarty is in brentwood to show us why that is really needed, tara? >> reporter: well the wind is blowing according to the fire chief and the gusts were up to 35 miles per hour and you can see the winds whipping through the poles and this red flag

warning happens to coincide with the reopening of station 54. it had just closed last summer due to lowered revenues. the fire chief said his crews may have a busy first day back on the job and it will not expire until 6:00 tonight. it basically means there is a higher risk for fire danger in the areas of alameda and contra costa county above 1,000 feet and firefighters say it is unusual for this fire season. >> i can remember the red flag warning being out for the first time in may. it has been a very dry winter and we'll see the consequences of it all summer. >> they have hung barbecue suspensions and they have issued a statewide burning ban.

a home and tried to kidnap a two-year-old girl and this all happened in front of the other children. >> we ran in the room and i pushed the door. >> so you pushed the door closed? >> yes. >> now investigators did take a dna suspect but at this point sheriff's officials say there is no connection to the leila fowler killing. >> i just want to thank the entire community and all of our family and friends with the overwhelming amount of support you have given my family... >> meantime in the community of valley springs about 1,000 people held a candle light vigil for leila fowler. they tied ribbons of her favorite color to a fence and included memories and songs. there were no signs of burglary and they continue to ask for

facebook. they are involved in a horrible high speed crash, let's go to sal for the very latest. it is closing a lot of lanes and this is on the boulevard underneath the freeway, this is video taken just a little while ago from news chopper 2 and this car was reported speeding at 100 miles per hour and it lost control and hit the beam of support on the over crossing of 880. the person was trapped briefly in the car and was on the way to the hospital and was conscious and breathing but is on the way to the hospital. they have one lane open again and it is a good idea for this area, the this person was taken -- this person was taken to the hospital to the urgent care department. let's look at the bay bridge toll plaza which is backed up all the way to the mcarthur maze, it is about a 15 to 20

minute delay. we have a sig alert, a big-rig crash there and traffic is very slow getting out to novato to vallejo. this is just one of those bad crashes and i want to move it to a crash in san jose. northbound 280 and 880 getting up to the 280 interchange, a car crash is blocking most of the freeway there. let's go to steve. we have a wind advisory out, warm to hot conditions. there are huge differences in some of the lows, i was just looking at it in the financial district. and some areas of san francisco alone, red flag warning above 1,000 feet, everything is so dry, gusts are easy for some, the surface is not as strong and we have a wind advisory and some of the higher elevations

are definitely over 50 miles per hour. that was 74 earlier and 70. emerald hills, 53, almost 50, vacaville, travis, chicago, and i have seen about 25. but again, livermore says brent just fur tried it -- verified it and san jose is south at 3:00, it is 10:00 out of the north and that will mean much more with fog down along the santa cruz coastline. 60s for some, incredible differences and there is that fog again. i don't think it makes much more of a northern push. it will be sunny though, windy breezy, probably only for the morning and it will get taken out. 60s and 70s and if the wind

debate is centering on how same- sex marriage couples are affected by that bill. >> reporter: they are looking for foreign born spouses of u.s. citizens but democrats are ready to put up a fight because the bipartisan bill left all provisions to help same sex couples. it defines marriage between a man and woman but it does not recognize same-sex marriage couples. they want to give green cards to same sex partners to u.s. citizens but even talk of that could strike down the original deal all together. they say it was difficult enough to get gop support for a path of citizenship. barbara boxer is helping them get same sex cards. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2

the westbound bay bridge and the traffic is backed up for a 25 minute delay. let's go to steve. a little breezy for some, not bad for others, red flag warnings are out, mainly north and east bay, gusts go up to 50 miles per hour, there is either a wind advisory and they go through this afternoon and evening. again the wind gusts in some areas are calm, but some of the higher elevations are up to 50 plus and if you have any kind of breeze, it is mild and it is working its way up the coast. it looks like it is touching the southern end of it. it is about ready it being rain turning to snow. it stretches all the way back to denver and just incredible snow turns whereas our dry weather has not changed in a

long time and some temperatures are 30 some near 70s. except for that fog near the santa cruz coast, it is just a morning event and it is windy for most. 70s and 80s and 90s, it would be 75 degrees cooler at the forecasted temperatures. a little cooler sunday and much cooler monday. executives will be called to testify for the british parliament again. they will see how much tax it pays to the british government from the uk but some of its workers think they -- they will see how much taxes the british government should pay for their

we are on night's valley in sonoma county and this is just one area which is burning and we don't have crews. hand crews have been spread out but they are trying to get a fire line around it so it can't spread. at last word, we were at 200 acres and they want to get a chopper so we could get a better idea of what we are dealing with. they have a lack of resources because we were told time and again and they were trying to staff it and this has stretched the resources tight overnight and into the morning. it has been a long night and into the morning and we spoke about the several fires in and around this area. we were there where winds were gusting and crews were there and they came out to this fire about 1:00 this morning and really when we first called and checked, they say it was small and things have changed quickly

to demand immigration reform. janine de la vega is in san jose and they are talking about a plan of action there, janine? >> reporter: pam, we are here in the heart of san jose and so far the people we spoke to say they have planned ongoing to the march because they feel it is important back in 2006 and 2007, the crowds were massive when mayday marches were held. they are trying to ensure their strength in numbers but this year they are heavily focused on targeting lawmakers. this year's rally is especially busy because it is written by four democrats two weeks ago. it allows skilled workers into the country and provides a path for citizenship for the 11

for their march and it starts today. they held a candle light vigil for leila fowler. it began at the elementary school. they used purple and pink ribbons and the vigil included memories from her teacher and also music from her favorite song, need you now. >> i want to thank our entire community and family and friends and the overwhelming support you have given my family, it will never be forgotten. >> little leila fowler was killed and stabbed to death. there were no signs of a burglary or robbery. the martinez boy gets to celebrate his 12th birthday at home. aaron hern is recovering well despite his very serious

right-hand corner is circled and that's the backpack believed to be the bomb. the fbi is now investigating several persons of interest in the boston area who may have had direct contact with the two bombing suspects in the months before the bombings. fbi agents want to talk to two suspected russian militants and they want to talk to dzhokhar tsarnaev. there is a new controversial tied -- controversy tied to the new bridge and they have undercoverred a conflict of interest on the eastern span. they found some were asked to conduct a technical review which reportedly have ties to transportation. they have ties to bridge contractors and so far there is no response from caltrans which is of course in charge of the

go to steve. we have wind for some, cold lows, warm lows and even some fog on the discuss coast and -- santa cruz coast and parts of the rockies. warm to hot, red flag warning goes above 1,000 feet and looking up in the north bay, generally 22 to 28 miles per hour and it is all in the north and that means northerly direction. some of the dusts are up over 50s and it's not too bad. they did have is augusta and emerald hills, 47 miles per hour vacaville, travis, 28, port chicago and 25 i have seen but oakland airport, calm, a south wind at 3, livermore says calm, very cold lows for some

and some 40s but other locations are near 70 degrees. 56 san francisco, just a short distance away and also that smoke from the napa county fires, there is the fog. >> incredible, but it was very thick so if you are traveling on highway #0 1, you have -- 101, you have to have snow tires. it there is snow in denver and it's a good thing they are playing because they would get snowed out again. 40 in tahoe, 34 up in eureka. 61 sacramento, it will be sunny except for that santa cruz coastline. windy for most, 70s to 80s to low 90s, it is a really tough call and it is all independent. it will be cooler on the weekend. well, back to that serious crash in the east bay which

happened about one hour ago, brian flores is at the accident scene and this is in san lorenzo. you can see extensive damage, obviously it was traveling at a high rate of speed. witnesses say it was going northbound and i did want to talk to the chp and stick around, shawn what can you tell us about this accident? >> well, basically, we received some reports of a reckless driver that was heading northbound and witnesses took that at about 100 miles per hour. shortly after, they collided with a wall here at that location and -- at this location and fire units responded, fire personnel and found that the driver had to be extricated. >> from what we understand, that driver was taken to the hospital and we don't know the

fighting a 15-acre fire in napa and that fire is now under control. and right now much of the bay area is under a red flag fire warning, dry conditions and high winds are heightening concerns of more fast fires in napa county this morning. tara moriarty is in contra costa where brentwood is fortunately preparing a fire station today, and it is just in time, tara? >> people are breathing a sigh of relief and the timing could not be better with this red flag warning in effect. the relative humidity kicked in around 6:00 last night creating ripe conditions for a fire. it will extend from 6:00 -- it will extend from 6:00 tonight and it is now down to lower

open. chp says traffic is backed up all the way into marin county and the best thing to do is use a different route other than 37. it is a mess this morning and the crash is right near highway 121. let's go to steve. most locations say hiker elevations are -- higher elevations are dealing with gusts and it's so dry here he, warm to -- dry here, warm to hot and generally above 1,000 feet, we have mt. diablo has the strongest gusts. in fact a northerly direction we have 25 to 30 mile-per-hour winds and high pressure is definitely in charge and windy and warmer yet a lot of thick fog down in santa cruz and

monterey and on the edge of san mateo coast. these are all wind dependant and if the wind does not show up you might be 7 or 8 degrees cooler. it is brutal with that fog on the santa cruz coast only 72 degrees. warm and hot thursday and friday and a much cooler pattern on the weekend. we want to take you live to the big board and see how they are doing, dow jones industrial average is down 50 points and nasdaq and s&p 500 also a little flat as well and this morning master card said profits rose to 600 million and they are up from last year and right now they are down $9 a share. may is the start of prom season and they should expect to pay more for everything. they should play up to $1,100
